As someone who extensively played Star Wars Galactic Battlegrounds as a kid and is currently playing through Age of Empires Definitive edition, I can say with confidence that every franchise needs a real time strategy/civilization builder game using the Age of Empires II game engine

love discovering older games. I found star wars galactic battleground (because of may the 4th sales) and i was like " this looks exactly like age of empires. So i booted it up and then menu and yo i was exactly like age of empires. I was able to play without a tutorial and was thinking "man this is just age of empires"
wouldn't you know i check steam some more and it was made by the people who made age of empires.
anyway I've been playing it and my nostalgia for old age of empires plus it being star wars is making it my new silly favourite game

Thinking about her again
Sev'Rance Tann, I adore you greatly and I so desperately wish you were allowed to be more than an antagonist for the OC Jedi character of the developers of Age of Empires.
For those unaware, this is Sev'Rance Tann, a Dark Side Adept trained by Count Dooku who served as the overall Supreme Commander of the CIS forces before Grievous, and who only lasted about a month because she had to be killed off by the end of the second campaign. She was introduced in the expansion pack Clone Campaigns for the video game Star Wars: Galactic Battlegrounds, a real-time strategy game made by the same people who created the Age of Empires series and built on the same engine as Age of Empires II, the game they had most recently released. The base game came out in 2001, and so by 2002 they had an expansion pack ready to tie into Attack of the Clones. The two campaigns added are for the Galactic Republic and the Confederacy of Independent Systems, perhaps unsurprisingly. The Confederacy campaign follows Sev'Rance Tann, while the Republic campaign follows Echuu Shen-Jon, a Jedi previously shown in the Rebel campaign for the original game as a survivor of Order 66 (though not yet called that at the time, it was only 2001 after all). In the course of the campaigns she wins victory after victory before finally losing a lightsaber duel with Echuu after he gives in to the Dark Side to kill her out of rage and revenge for killing his Padawan and kidnapping his new Padawan (who were brother and sister).
One of the sourcebooks, I think the New Chronology, establishes that she had a lover, Vandalor, who was a recurring boss in Star Wars: The New Droid Army, a Game Boy Advanced game that also has Anakin defeat Dooku and seemingly kill him (but this was later retconned to be a weird force doppelganger thing, thanks Abel). I personally don't like this connection, it feels weird to me, but also that may be because I am gay for this woman and I don't want her to be dating some guy who's a miniboss from a Game Boy Advanced AotC tie-in game.
Anyway in Legends Sev'Rance is one of the few Chiss to leave Chiss Space, is an accomplished commander and an at least decent user of the Force and the lightsaber, and it's a shame we never got to use her in anything else. I fully understand that her role got fulfilled by various other characters going forward (Sora Bulq, General Grievous and Asajj Ventress all fulfilling different aspects of her character as shown in the game) but I still think she's interesting and I wish we could have had her be used in something else too, or at least a more interesting death.

Heavy Artillery Gun-Mortars, or HAG-M, were a type of autonomous droid ground vehicle manufactured for the Trade Federation and used during the Clone Wars. HAG-Ms were equipped with a single large artillery cannon, which fired powerful energy blasts capable of leveling buildings. Their armor made them formidable opponents.

In a world after the Disney-Retcon of Star Wars, it’s always nice to see an obscure bit of lore that you specifically grew up with is at least semi-canon because the events and/or characters were mentioned in a more modern source book somewhere.

i'm curious about the provenance of this guy
Tumblr media
That lifeform appears to be an Eopie, more specifically an icon from the game Star Wars: Galactic Battlegrounds. Many such creatures.

like yes I absolutely am condescending to people who whine about free updates to the one game on earth that lets you play every single in development and full release version ever made in its history because my nostalgic sandbox game was star wars galactic battlegrounds saga and age of mythology map customizers instead of minecraft. but I guess what I would really like is to trick people into weaponizing that anger at gacha games and battle pass bullshit where the updates are actually exploitative and insufficient and ought not be culturally tolerated. but I also bought sims 4 expansions with my own adult money so you know. glass houses

Have you heard of Sev’rance Tann from Star Wars Legends, and if so are you also gay for her like I am?
I haven't heard of her before but I just looked her up and Separatist Chiss commander who uses the dark side of the force just checks all the boxes for me I will be watching gameplays/walkthroughs of Star Wars: Galactic Battlegrounds: Clone Campaigns for her when I have the time (I don't play video games but watching other people play them is great)
Also yeah I'm gay for her

I was so delighted by your brief discussion of Star Wars Galactic Battlegrounds in the most recent episode. My school had a copy of it on our one shared computer and we spent so many indoor recesses using cheats to spawn endless death stars to decimate the entire map.
this rules. i remember in high school bringing a flash drive around with me at all times that had a little suite of emulators so i could play pokemon silver over and over again.

Capturing the ambience of Star Wars: Galactic Battlegrounds
This Genie engine RTS challenges players with conquering exotic locales in a far away galaxy.
Capturing footage
Install the Expanding Fronts conversion mod to get high-resolution graphics, in widescreen aspect ratios, at 60fps. I couldn't find a way to hide the user interface, so we'll just crop a 720p image from our 1080p capture.
Use the forceexplore and forcesight cheats to completely reveal the map.
Tumblr media
Identifying sounds
Ambient sound assets can be found inside Game\Sound\Terrain.
SWGB decides which sounds to play depending on which types of terrain are currently visible. To explore this mapping in detail, we can use Advanced Genie Editor's Terrains tab. For example, GRASS1 uses the Sound group ID of 6:
Tumblr media
And on the Sounds tab, we can see which assets are part of group 6:
Tumblr media
Sound groups reference
There are several audible terrain types. Here's a listing of each and their corresponding asset names:
#9 Water: shore, swamp, etc. W1, W2, W3, W4, W5
#1255 Lava: L1, L2, L3, V1
#7 Barrens: Dirt, ice, snow, barren trees. B1, B2, B3
#543 Jungle: strange or twisted tress. J1, J2, J3, J4
#8 Forest: all other kinds of trees. F1, F2, F3, F4, F5, F6, F7
#6 Grass: C, G1, G2, G3
Expanding (ambient) Fronts
The EF conversion mod adds a few biomes (e.g. Swamp, Metal) and remakes the ones above. EF also adds ambient sounds for map fauna e.g. Fambaas.
Putting it all together
Weave assets relevant to the visible terrain types into a compelling soundscape, using an editor like Audacity. Overlay this onto your game footage, using a tool like Shotcut.

I remembered this old RTS game I played as a kid. Star Wars Galactic Battlegrounds. turns out it’s on steam for cheap and the game is actually better than I remembered lmao it’s a solid game and I’m having a lot of fun with it again

Obba Babatundé (Donald Cohen; December 1, 1951) is an actor. A native of Queens, he has appeared in more than seventeen stage productions, thirty theatrical films, sixty made-for-television films, and two prime-time series.
He was born in Jamaica, Queens. He was attracted early to the theater and would sing, dance, and act for his family. He attended Jamaica High School where he was a well-rounded student who, in addition to appearing in the Sing ‘68 school musical program, was a student aide and a member of both the track and cross country teams. After graduating from Jamaica High School, he started teaching at a private school for students of color. He pursued acting jobs in New York, gaining some roles Off-Off-Broadway.
Learning that his ancestry included people from Nigeria, he adopted a name made of Yoruba words: Obba, for “king”, and Babatunde, meaning “father has returned again.”
His voice acting roles in animated films and games include Lando Calrissian in Star Wars: Galactic Battlegrounds, Star Wars: Rogue Squadron II: Rogue Leader, Star Wars: Rogue Squadron III: Rebel Strike, and Disney Infinity 3.0 as well as Conroy in Rocket Power. In The Wild Thornberrys Movie, he voiced the character of Boko, and in Pup Star, he played the soul-singing Basset Hound, Big Ears.
He was co-producer and director of Oscar’s Black Odyssey, co-producer of Dorothy Dandridge: An American Beauty, and co-producer of TV in Black: The First 50 Years. He is associate producer of the horror film Voodoo Dolls and executive producer of Journey. He directed and co-stars American Bad Boy, and he produced and directed the short film Clarissa’s Gift. He directed a version of the Broadway musical Dreamgirls. He co-authored, directed, and produced In the Blink of an Eye.
Some of his recorded works include singing the title track on Sack Full of Dreams, and “The Gal That Got Away” on Over The Rainbow, the Harold Arlen soundtrack. He starred as Zodzetrick in Treemonisha. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence
