She sat with her head in her hands, the Jedi code said not to form attachments, but when you help raise a child, how else are you supposed to deal with the loss. This was war, and in the last battle she had lost her Padawan and half her battalion. She felt she had failed as a master, failed as a General, Failed as a Jedi. She hardly noticed when someone sat next to her, quietly supporting her.

“It’s not your fault, you know.” The familiar voice of Anakin reaches her ears, they had trained together in the years before the war, It was the best of times, when they were young and naïve. The days that they were carefree.

“You didn't see it, you weren’t there, I…I couldn’t save them…I should have…” She started to cry again, the sobs wrecking her body, she couldn’t hold them back. She couldn’t stop it. She was surprised when suddenly she was wrapped in his embrace.

“Its. Not. Your. Fault.” He says decisively holding her tight. She buried her face in his shoulder as she cries. He rubs her back in a circular motion, holding her tight. Anakin can’t bring himself, to leave her side for several days. Watching as she continues to fall apart at the seams. However it isn’t until the last chance that he realizes shes too far gone. He went to check on her one night to find her room empty, her things tossed around and her lightsabers left on the bed. He bolted out of the room searching for her. Just as he was about to go to find someone to help the search he found her, entering the hangar, a pack over her back and her eyes on the horizon. He called her name and rushed to her side. She turns to look at him, she had been caught.  

“What are you doing?” Anakin asked, his voice filled with worry and exasperation, He didn’t understand what was happening where she was going. She hesitates, her eyes never meeting his.

“I’m leaving.” She says, confirming his worst fear. Her voice was so steady so sure.

“What. What do you mean you’re leaving?”

“I have been thinking about it for a while. I needed a reason. I couldn’t abandon my men, My Padawan, But they-” She takes a deep breath, willing herself not to cry again. “They don’t need me anymore.”

“What about me? What if I need you?” Anakin asked panicked, grabbing her hand. Anakin was not very good at keeping attachment out of the picture, and he took her leaving personally. She shook her head, squeezing his hand.

“Oh Ani. Don’t pretend it’s such a mystery, I don’t fit in here, I never have.” She speaks softly, he recognized this tone, the tone she uses when comforting Younglings who scraped their knee, or with a lost child. He can see it clearly, she was meant to be a mother, a wife, someone who could love and care for others. In that life, would he have been able to love her openly? Would they have known each other?  It was the great escape, the fantasy in his head where he could have lived that life instead. The one where they were happy. In another time. Another place, another lifetime. He looks around, no one in sight. He pulls her into his arms.

“I wish you would stay. Or I wish I could go with you.” He confesses, his embrace is warm. She wishes that was the way their life would go. That she didn’t need to run that she didn’t need to get away.

“I know. I’m sorry it can’t be that way. I need to feel the light of freedom on my face...” She softly says while pulling away from him. She starts to walk away, he reaches out and grabs her hand.

“If you miss me…Just…Think about the place where you first met me, and I’ll be there. Waiting.” He says this with a knot in his throat, ready to shead a few tears of his own. She gives him a sad smile, a lingering glance, and a final pulse on his hand. She walks away, and gets a few feet away before looking back, her voice reaches his ears one last time.  

“Should've known I'd be the first to leave…”
