Creature Comforts is one of the cutest things I've ever read in my life. I don't want to presume, but I think you headcanon Newt the same way I do, and that just made the fic even better for me. I actually laughed out loud at the line about wrinkles. 🤣 Theseus really does get those Klingon ridges when he's mad at Newt doesn't he? I was also going to ask if you were a Sherlock fan because of one of the lines, but I see you've written Sherlock fics too! I need to read those. I just have one question, was the puffskein name a coincidence? Because Redmayne actually has a daughter named Iris and I was like WHOA. Love this fic!

YES! I definitely see a lot of Sherlock and Mycroft in those Scamander boys. And not just the Cumberbatch/Gatiss version. And no the puffskein name was 100% on purpose nodding to his daughter. :)

1. Transport between the ship and a starbase for a vet visit

2. In theory the transporter could put someone back together into any pattern saved in the computer so long as they had enough mass. It’s said at one point (I think) that transporters work on similar technology as replicators use.

A lot of ink has been spilled on the implications of this, but the writers never seem to wanna dig in too deep. Probably because the main purpose of the things in 99% of episodes is “explain how the crew got from the ship to the planet,” and it’s distracting for the audience to be pondering the Ship of Theseus every time that happens.

First of all, what business did Spot have being anywhere near a transporter. Second of all, the transporter can do what?? "Yeah sorry about your cat. We sent her through the transgender operation transporter. Yeah.... sorry again." I'm in tears.

“Star Trek” and “Star Trek: Defiant” Crossover “Day of Blood” Begins July 2023

Star Trek and Star Trek: Defiant’s 5-part crossover event “Day of Blood” will begin in July 2023. A prelude to the event will take place in Star Trek Free Comic Book Day 2023, written by Collin Kelly, Jackson Lanzing, and Christopher Cantwell and illustrated by Mike Feehan, on May 6, 2023.

Kahless II, emperor of the Klingon Empire, plans to “declare war on all those who do not follow the cult of the Red Path! Having raided ancient tombs, claimed near-limitless power for himself, and slaughtered cosmic entities across the stars, Kahless sees the genocide of gods as simply his first step to total domination. The iconic crew of the U.S.S. Theseus, led by Benjamin Sisko, and the renegades who follow a desperate, violent Worf aboard the U.S.S. Defiant must unite for a common cause. my first main gripe with the people responding to the Star Trek transporter question by invoking sleep as a similar interruption of conscioussnes is that that comparison kind of breaks down when you consider the case(s) where the copy is assembled at the destination before the original is destroyed, including the scenario where the original is never destroyed and is effectively cloned. because then you're forced into a bunch of awkward answers:

in the case where the teleporter malfunctions and clones you without killing the original, would you keep experiencing the world through both bodies at once, or would the version of you at the destination be an independent person with their own consciousness/soul/whatever term you want to use? i feel like making the argument that the clone is still an extension of you and "you" experience the world through both bodies simultaneously would be a hard sell to most people, especially with identical twins, like, existing

so if you accept that the version of you at the destination is an independent person when they're created before you're destroyed, why would that magically change if they were created simultaneously with or after your destruction? is there some non-corporeal component to human consciousness that would need to be "liberated" from your original body before it would even need to take up host in an identical body, like a hermit crab moved from one shell to another? this is really the root of the issue, and i have yet to hear a compelling answer to this that doesn't invoke religion or the concept of a "soul". which, to be clear, are fine arguments if you buy them, i don't want to start arguing about religion on top of this, but they do nothing for me personally

my second gripe with the sleep comparison is that, at the risk of stating the obvious, going to sleep does not physically destroy your brain and entire body by reducing them to atoms and scattering them to the four winds. yes, i'm aware that bodies cycle individual atoms in and out so on a long enough timescale you could argue that they naturally do get "destroyed", but that's just doing Ship of Theseus all over again. the teleporter thing would be like if Theseus destroyed the original ship entirely and then built a new one and claimed it was still the same ship

Idol ⭐️ Hands: note, I believe Data is modeling himself after Captain Sisko’s style of leadership here — as earlier, Sisko, laughed at Commander Data’s suggestion to consult Starfleet’s admirals before heading into a potentially fabric-of-reality-altering situation. As text is smaller below (a two-page spread), I’ve transcribed the dialog.

Acting Captain Data: Ensign Sato, broadcast Starfleet evacuation codes to all affected planets with my over-ride authorization.

Ensign Sato (the Andorian): Yes, sir.

Acting Captain Data: Additionally, broadcast the sub space frequencies of all nearby Starfleet vessels so they can be coordinated with directly.

Ensign Sato: Help is on the way!

Acting Captain Data: Lieutenant Descheeni, reassign all personnel from sciences and research to communications and telemetry. Transfer display protocols rather than physically relocating staff.

Lt. Descheeni: Clever, Captain.

Acting Captain Data: Simply necessary, Lieutenant. They will assist in efforts by Ensign Sato to coordinate evacuating in local language and custom as well as aid Ensign T’lr’s upcoming calculations.

Ensign T’lr (the Vulcan): Speaking of which, sir. I have a trajectory that might allow us to alter the course of the creature slightly by affecting their warp field stability, like a gentle nudge.

It will not change where they are going, but it should affect less inhabited systems.

Acting Captain Data: That is acceptable. Execute. And, Mr. Paris?

Lt. Paris: Don’t gotta tell me what to do, Captain. I’m the first human to ever achieve trans warp flight. I can handle the turbulence. The problem is going to be keeping up.

I can feel the engines, Commander. They’re not up to this.

Acting Captain Data: Mr. Scott, to address this, please activate the the Theseus’ classified propulsion system.

Chief Engineer Scott: I dinnae know what you’re talking ab—

Acting Captain Data: I looked over your design as soon as I was assigned, sir. It is incumbent on a first officer to know everything about his ship.

And while such a classified marker would no doubt deter most, my best friend is a decorated warp drive engineer. And so I was able to infer the use of the redacted capsules near each of the Theseus’ warp nacelles.

I was also able to infer that they were classified because they were, in fact, not yet working.

Chief Engineer Scott: Aye. Torres tried to get it working for months, but the containment frequencies never held.

Lt. Paris: Wait, B’elanna Torres? Like, my wife, B’elanna Torres? This was her little ‘side project’?

Chief Engineer Scott (on speaker): Aye, laddie. She said if you behaved, she’d let ye design the Bridge canopy.

Acting Captain Data: I have just relayed to you containment frequencies that I believe will solve the problem.

Chief Engineer Scott: It...it works. My God...

Acting Captain Data: No, Mr. Scott. Simply an android. Now, if you would be so kind, please take the vessel to transwarp.

Chief Engineer Scott: Way ahead of ye, Captain. But one little correction...like I always said, transwarp’s nothing but a dead end.

Acting Captain Data: “I am experiencing pride.”
