After 30 years of searching for his lost brother through demonic rituals and summonings, Ford has become a bit of a notorious demon collector over the years. He's made a LOT of deals with MANY different demons over the years; from minor and harmless little entities to big and powerful overlords. Most of the time, these deals aren't really a one-way situation, so a lot of demons have a strong grip on him just as much as he does on them. It often ends up being a mutual sort of destruction, as in: "I know I'm but a mere mortal trifling with things I couldn't begin to fathom, and I know you will destroy me eventually; but I don't care as long as I get to destroy you too." He just needs to live long enough to find his brother.

The red hands are essentially pieces of himself (his soul, you could say??) that he wields as his method of restraint to the demons he has "tamed" so far. They act as a leash to contain each demons' powers, and he can loosen or tighten his hold on them as much as he wants. The number of hands required to contain a demon really depends on their individual strengths, but 3-4 hands are already very energy consuming.

YES, I gave all of his demons stupid names. SUE ME.

therapist: it's completely normal to want to talk to someone, lots of people have trouble adjusting-

sam: yeah i grew up in a car so it's been weird, like, owning stuff

therapist (thinks she misheard): you grew up in- a car? like a caravan home?

sam: no it was my dad's 1967 impala. and, i mean, we lived in motels mostly. ive always shared with my brother so its easy having a roommate at least. sometimes we rented a place for a few months if we were lucky - since dad moved around a lot.

therapist: oh, what did your father do for a living? a travelling salesman? a military man?

sam: um. he was a mechanic.

therapist (why would a mechanic move around every month): ....right. was it just you, your father and your brother?

sam: yeah. and neither of them are speaking to me now because i came here. my dad's angry i disobeyed him, and my brother's just upset i left at all.

therapist (this, at least, makes sense): ah, yeah. younger siblings often have trouble when their older siblings leave home. is he much younger than you?

sam: .....no hes 22

therapist: . right.

Sam first weeks at Stanford

Sam wakes up in the morning in his empty and quiet apartment. There's no one to wake him up smiling and talking to him about a brand new day starting. When he decides to skip breakfast, no one’s there to give him a calculating look. He doesn't need to count the amount of time he will be able to repeat it before someone forces him to eat. He takes the bus that reeks of sweat and cigarettes, not leather and beer. He arrives at school, works on his own, and when he spots a group of assholes in the hallway, he thinks that if they ever decided to pick on him, no one would be there to make a fuss and beat them up. He eats dinner at the small table in his apartment, trying to ignore the emptiness he feels from not having anyone sitting in front of him to mock his food choices or tease him. He takes his shower without complaining about cold water, since no one was there to use up the hot water. Lying in his bed late at night, he misses hearing the snores coming from the other side of the room. And when the weight of loneliness weighs too heavily on his heart, he might play rock music in his headphones, close his eyes, and pretend to feel the comforting rumble of the engine and by his side, the presence of a brother he always could have count on but who he had cowardly abandoned.
