I bring thee a bit of Graveyard Spiral (Losing Altitude), the middle bit of Stall Recovery Procedures, written purely because I like torturing poor Buck <3

The radio on the windowsill of Bucky's living room is warbling quietly to itself about heartbreak, a million miles from Gale Cleven's grave. Buck takes a long drag of his cigarette, and does not look at the hurt in Bucky's eyes. This you will be the one worth knowing. Random idea: Cybertronian who scans a vehicle to be their altmode, but has 0 clue what certain functions from said vehicle do

Examples:

Cybertronian with a B737 altmode who doesn't know what aural warning alerts mean, and gets jumpscared by alerts like "TOO LOW GEAR" "SINK RATE SINK RATE"

Cybertronian with aircraft altmode in a snowy region who doesn't realize earth aircrafts need to be deiced or sometimes anti-iced before flying, and just flat out face plants into the snow right after take off

(Ok yeah I'm just thinking about airplanes again shush) But also another thought: Do flying Cybertronians have to learn how to fly when they first come online???? Seekers ig wouldn't stall easily bc fighter jets are designed to not stall- But do others have to practice stall recovery procedures??

I'm partially thinking about how convenient it is that Twitch from Earthspark scanned a drone, since drones to my knowledge are extremely hard to stall?

Before I tell you the answer, I think I should explain what a stall in this context is. Stall in this case doesn't only mean slow, it means the airfoil (wings for airliners) stops generating enough lift to support the weight of the aircraft. While it can be induced by low airspeed, it's not the direct reason.

As I've said before, airplane wings generate lift by moving into a constant stable stream of airflow. Due to the Bernoulli's principle, the air on top of the wing moves faster so it creates a low pressure environment, and the slower air underneath has a higher pressure, so it naturally wants to move up into the lower pressure pocket of air. The wing is in the way, so it gets lifted up along with the rest of the airplane.

The more you pitch up, the more curved the upper surface of the wing is relative to the incoming air, so you generate more lift, but only to a certain point. As you angle of attack (AoA) increases, it reaches a point where it starts separating the two streams of air, creating turbulence behind the wing. Once you exceed the critical AoA, the air around the wing stops flowing smoothly and lift stops being generated. This is how you end up with a stall.

AoA is the single determining factor of stalls, you can stall a plane at supersonic speed if you surpass the critical AoA. It's just that the slower a plane flies, the higher the AoA has to be in order to generate enough lift to keep the plane flying level. If the plane keeps slowing down, eventually you'll still reach the critical AoA and the plane stalls.

If you do nothing, and let the autopilot take care of it, it would be fine if autothrottle is on. But in Athena's case, the first officer only had time to engage one autopilot, he was too busy passing out to turn on the autothrottle. The autopilot will try to maintain the altitude previously input into the system, if the current thrust setting is sufficient for that particular altitude, the plane will keep flying like that until it runs out of fuel; if not, like if the captain accidentally knocked the thrust levers into idle position when she was thrown around during the violent evasive maneuver, the altitude will decrease due to the lack of airspeed, but the autopilot will still try to pitch up into the selected altitude, until the pitch surpasses the critical AoA and the plane starts stalling. What that means is, the autopilot is probably putting the plane into a stall condition in the first place. So this is the wrong answer, in this scenario.

If you pull up, well, obviously your AoA will increase. If you're approaching or already in a stall, it'll exacerbate the situation and you'll fall out of the sky even faster.

So maybe you think applying more power is the solution. If you're in Athena's exact situation (ie simply flying too slow, they're not in a stall, the plane is already pitching down), it might be. But if you're already in a stall, suddenly accelerating will result in a strong pitch up moment (like in the show) and again, exacerbate your stall.

Pitch up doesn't automatically equal high AoA. In Athena's case, the plane is pitching up but also climbing, so the relative airflow comes from above instead of ahead. The angle of attack is actually lower compared to a plane flying pitch up but level.

The correct answer is to pitch down, as long as you have enough clearance beneath you, to decrease the AoA. (If you're super close to the ground, at least keep the nose level.) That's why every pilot, from a teenager trying to earn their first private license to a highly experienced test pilot, is drilled in their head to pitch down when the stall warning sounds. It may sound counterintuitive, but once you grasp the principles of flight, you'll understand it's the only way. This is the Airbus A320 stall recovery procedure for example:

Athena is the adult, and she's a badass who can do no wrong, but I doubt she knows this particular piece of information. Jem the avgeek on the other hand, like me, probably learned this lesson when he crashed his first couple of planes in flight sim, along with other flight mechanisms that seem illogical. So it makes perfect sense for him to handle the controls while Athena handles the communication.

"It's freezing in here..." Rex hissed between chattering teeth, immediately regretting having taken off his bucket as soon as they entered the Umbaran medical facility.

The Captain was right too. The quick preliminary scans that Fives had done upon the trio sneaking in, revealed that the entire building was at almost sub-zero levels of cold. For what reason, he couldn't be sure, but it probably had something to do about storing bacterial culture samples or whatever the hell it was that natborn doctors did with the stuff they collected off their patients during tests.

He had already lived through a lifetime of medical tests performed by plenty of Long-Necks and Droids, that didn't particularly care about his or his vode's comfort during said procedures. He didn't really need to know what the nattie docs got up to outside of the war efforts.

"Put your helmet back on." Kix ordered as he uneasily looked around the hall they'd ended up in, after climbing out of the dusty ventilation system. "Your armor's thermal regulation system should keep you from freezing your shebs off."

"Tell me something I don't know..." The blond grumbled as he put his bucket back on, sighing in relief as the bitter cold was chased away in mere instants. "Much better... But moving on, we need to find a floor plan for this place..."

A wise idea, as they couldn't waste time running around blindly. If they got their hands on a map of the facility's various floors, they'd be able to find what they were looking for much faster, rather than risk getting lost in a maze of recovery areas, operation theaters, or even storage closets.

There was no telling how long they'd have before General Kenobi and the 212th could no longer stall for them, and with no word from Coric's group things were starting to look a little grim.

Getting to the facility itself had been a struggle. Between hiding from the Umbaran scouting parties, avoiding the aggressive wildlife, and keeping an eye out for the infected, the journey had been a constant uphill battle where they couldn't even resort to using their blasters. Unwilling to bring unwanted attention to their positions.

Given that they hadn't encountered the other medics, they assumed the others were struggling just as terribly. If not worse. They had no idea if they'd escaped from the base unscathed. For all they knew, Coric, Pitch, Twitch and Sponge had already been caught. Or worse...

And with only a vague idea that they needed to access a database to seek out some critical (but not very explicitly elaborated upon) information, the trio really wasn't all that prepared for this sort of excursion.

One medic would definitely not be enough, should they find a cure. That much they figured, considering the number of infected troopers in the 501st alone. Kix wouldn't be able to tackle the issue on his own.

"You think the others are ok?" Fives asked as he looked around, somewhat unsure if the way they'd chosen to go first would get them anywhere of use. He was walking slowly, steps as light as the bulk of his armor would allow, keeping an ear out for trouble.

"They're tough." Rex nodded slowly. Trying to be optimistic, considering he knew how frighteningly stubborn the medics could be, but still coming off as somewhat unsure in the end. The circumstances weren't easy ones after all. "They're probably just being careful, like we were..."

"Yeah... Yeah probably." The ARC nodded back, before motioning for the other two to stop near a corner where the hallway turned. He had a very quick look, and then gave them the all clear. Moving just a bit quicker now that he had a goal in sight.

Down the hall was a flight of emergency stairs. Besides it, attached to the wall as per standard safety regulations, was the digital emergency floor plan. The three rushed forward to have a look, barely containing their elation as they realized the interactive floor plan had pages that displayed the other floor layouts.

Thumbing through the available information, they saw exactly what they were looking for. The main datahub, which would contain all kinds of data-banks stock full of useful medical information.

"Basement floor." Fives groaned. "Of course the dang thing is in the creepy basement..."

"Not so much creepy, as probably absolutely frozen over..." Kix shook his head in disbelief. Sounding somewhat put-off at the possibility of facing even lower temperatures. "The entire basement of this huge building is dedicated to computers and the server banks. The amount of heat generated would need to be mitigated by considerably frigid mini-climate..."

"Kix, it's already pretty cold out here. I doubt the basement will be much worse..." Rex pointed out. "That said, if it IS worse, we should be as quick as possible. Even if our armor will protect us from the bitter cold, it won't do us any good if we stall and end up overworking the thermo regulation system. We'd freeze on the spot."

"Wouldn't want a case of frostbitten tootsies." Fives nodded, sounding morbidly amused at the idea. "Or hypothermia."

"If there ever was a place to catch your death, I suppose a hospital isn't the worst of options..." The medic responded with his own amusement.

They carried on, hoping their fellow troopers would meet with them soon. They could really use some help looking for the correct data at least... Hopefully the cause for their delay was indeed caution.

With a lit cigarette between his lips, he leans back and lets the voracious sofa consume him, until he's nothing more than sore bones and familiar-smelling smoke. Exhaustion sits heavy on his chest. He tries to remember when the last time he slept was, but the numbers don't make sense, and the math contorts itself around endless hours of crashing and burning. There's just inhale and exhale, the push and pull of smoke, the stuttering tick of his heart; the sofa chewing on his sore bones, and the radio warbling quietly to itself about heartbreak.

Bucky's bulk is blots out the hallway light. A smell of deep-frying oil, cigarette smoke and booze rolls out like a wave around him, and Buck thinks it would make his stomach roll, if he had anything in it; if the sight of Bucky inspired anything but bone-deep relief in him.

Buck waves off the question with a flourish of smoke: unimportant. Bucky stays uncharacteristically quiet, and keeps staring at him intently: important, after all. Buck sighs heavily. "Crashed the car." "What the… Buck." There are rough fingers on his jaw: Bucky forces his face to turn towards him, so he can examine the ugly bruise around his nose, the blood turning into flakes of rust around his mouth, the ghost made of cigarette smoke over his shoulder. "Are you okay?"

I haven’t written it all, but for the villain whumpee, River, this is what happened to him.

He was alone because the narrative sold to the public and even his companions was that he had betrayed heroes and people. He was left on his own after heavy dehumanization. Also another oc didn’t really go through their recovery completely alone but a big part of it was by self initiative.

So I have a few points about how a dehumanized whumpee could recover on their own.

Aggression can be animalistic until they find they are living in a society. Then, instinct kicks in and the whumpee will attempt to socialize by using dominating behaviors. Intimidation, plain old attacking, setting traps. Maybe it will be successful sometimes, but there will also be others when they’re possibly getting beaten up for even trying. This will further drive the whumpee into making better strategies and/or getting stronger.

They’re cautious to the point of paranoia, so it is very likely a whumpee that has gone feral will search for isolated places, such as woods or abandoned buildings. That means they will have to have a food source nearby, so many gross stuff will ensue. This is doubly powerful if they were trained to “earn” their food. Their justification to that will be “hunting it”. Until hunting within their “domains” stall or is threatened by an outsider, they’re very likely to not leave.

A feral whumpee will continue to be so until sufficiently exposed to social norms. They can take the escape route to a safe environment or mimic their peers. It’s very instinctual to mirror people, however a feral whumpee will only copy behaviors that will give them a reward. It doesn’t have to be positive and will not be registered as a wrong doing because rewards are given when they do something well and they kinda really need that half eaten burger in the trash, so it’s fine if they punch their way to get it. The lack of social interaction can and will stop the process of integration BECAUSE there’s nobody to make corrections.

Sickness is probably gonna be dealt in the most heinous way ever and be left to heal on its own. So whumpee will either develop a high pain tolerance or lower their defenses enough to try and earn help form another person, even if they’re still so anxious about people they are swatting away hands and are gone the second they feel they’re ok or know the procedure to heal themselves so they take what they need and leave.

Like op said, mimicking and acting will have a lot to do in their recovery. They can act composed, they can act like they’re a human who has never been treated so badly they don’t consider themselves a person even if they are safe. They can also be surrounded by people, but they’re unable to create a meaningful connection because they have put up walls so high and thick it would be easier to dig underneath to get to them. So a feral whumpee might behave, but inside they’re fighting their conditioning so hard, relationships get strained and can be potential triggers, so they will be moving a lot because their façade falls over and over.

A dehumanized whumpee that has been abandoned or disposed of, might latch into anyone that does the bare minimum, but like a stray dog, the moment they try to show any type of affection they will be running away. They don’t have the emotional development to trust anybody by random bouts of kindness, so if whumpee isn’t gonna have that exposure regularly, they will continue to be fearful and doubting of everyone.

If whumpee is in a foreign land, they are super likely to become even more closeted, but also, for survival, they will have to sit, watch and learn. They’re probably gonna wander around searching for someone who they can understand, but if there’s nobody, they will search for ways to learn around the culture by observation and trial and error.

For now that’s all I can think about, but just gotta say a whumpee who recovers on their own will have to have exposure to others in order to do so. They can’t really shed the feral and survival mode until they’re safely allocated and don’t have to worry much about the people surrounding them. Even if it’s for two days or less, those whumpees will heal by watching and adapting behaviors from others into their own lives. That means, you can have a whumpee who is feral and will kill anybody who gets too close, slowly grow into someone who is paranoid, stressed and reserved and will kill anybody who gets too close but looks like they have integrated into society again.

Much of recovery on your own is gonna be an act you write from stolen paragraphs of other people’s script hoping it’s good enough to pass as an “authentic” one. So a whumpee who recovered on their own from dehumanization could struggle with that sense of being “a real human” because they are essentially just acting, not emotionally integrating their behavior as one of adaptation, but of survival.

how would a whumpee that kinda like. became feral from dehumanization be able to recover from it? with like, no help from medical people, and maybe (an unlikely chance but) about maybe one person helping

I thought about this for a while, honestly. I don’t think I’ve ever seen any stories or snippets on here where a conditioned Whumpee—to the extent you’re talking—recovers on their own. There’s always a caretaker to coddle them and coach them through it and honestly, this is a great idea and there should be a lot more of solo recovery arcs. Anyways, here’s a few of my thoughts

Out of necessity. At one point they realize inside their broken mind that acting like how they are, living off the streets between dumpsters, in the back of alleys, lashing out at anyone and anything that comes close to them, isn’t assisting in survival. At one point, they’re so starving and they’re cold, the only way to receive help in that moment is to mimic the behavior they see. They follow some old fellow in a tattered coat to a soup kitchen, copy their actions leading in, and eventually once they’re served a warm meal and passed a blanket, that begins everything.

They would have to desensitize themself to the sounds and sights that would have once sent them into a panic. The world is loud and bright and full of people, none of which is going anywhere, and unless they want to die on the side of the road they have to learn to live with it

I imagine them almost like a stray dog. Stalking the roads, growling at anyone who comes too close, digging for crumbs in the trash cans behind bakeries and cafes.

Slowly, they’re forced to learn how to read and count again, how to speak and how to act. It’s all about survival. If they say “hello, please,” and smile, maybe someone will drop a few pieces of paper into their palm, and they’ve since learned that that paper can be traded in the big buildings for food.

They copy what they see, good and bad. They’ll slip things from the store into their pocket and run when it sets off alarms. They’ll do anything they can for food, and if they can’t find food they’ll beg any random stranger that they pass. They learn quickly they can’t resort to aggression anymore, that anger will lead to consequences.

Yeah that’s really all I got, for the “no caretaker at all” part at least. Mimicking what they see and basically teaching themself how to be human again from that. If you’d like me to do another piece with feral whumpees and single caretakers, lmk!
