W.I.P. Wednesday - Glideslope Estimation
IDK if there's somebody who reads these, but I'm doing them anyway :,D
I'm giving y'all a scene from Glideslope Estimation, the next bit of Stall Recovery Procedures, hopefully coming next Tuesday! It's going decently well, so if I don't get sick now, I'm gonna make it :3
without further ado, a dream:
It's overcast again, and Gale tells him about Bucky. * * * * It's overcast again, and Gale tells him about Bucky. * * * * It's overcast again, and Gale tells him about Bucky. * * * * It's overcast again, and Gale tells him about Bucky. * * * * It's overcast again, and…
* * * * Thunder roars all around Rosie, rain pelts the thin metal skin of the fort bucking like a wild horse under his hands, lightning flashes so bright it's searing afterimages into his eyes: dials going haywire, water droplets in a mad dash on the windshield, the yoke kicking and fighting; the presence of a man to his right. Rosie has only met John Egan twice, a year and a half ago, but heard and dreamt enough of him meanwhile that the impression is vivid, if not a little blurry around the edges: Bucky is broad and solid next to him, handsome face crinkled in a wolfish grin, teeth a little too sharp, eyes squinted into half-moons glowing electric blue with mirth. His hands are not on the yoke: instead, one is holding a cigarette he keeps smoking with impressive nonchalance, and the other is a warm weight on Rosie's knee, pressing him down on right rudder ever so often. The overtaxed engines whine and choke, and the airframe is screaming in agony; a tiny crack appears on the windshield by Rosie's head with a glassy little tink, and then races across to Bucky with a horrible crunching noise, mirroring the forked lightning dancing just outside. Rosie is pulling on the yoke with so much force his arms tremble with it, just to keep them from going into a nosedive. The air in the cockpit is heavy with the stink of ozone, fear and smoke. Bucky takes a long, lazy drag of his cigarette. "Not giving up, Major?" He's delighted, teasing, easy. He shouldn't know Rosie's rank: Rosie is there to fill the void he left. Rosie is using all his strength and concentration just to keep them level, but still manages to press out through gritted teeth: "Never." Bucky cackles at that, and pats Rosie's knee, like he's a stray dog who managed to fetch the stick. Then he begins to whistle a jaunty tune. Rosie realizes after the second bar that it's meant to be an uptempo version of Ella Fitzgerald's Blue Skies. The next flash of lightning swallows the whole world up in blinding white light. When Rosie's vision clears, they're flying through clear blue skies the color of Gale's eyes, and Bucky is laughing. He wakes with a start. Thunder rumbles to the beat of his rabbiting heart outside the barracks. His mother would cuff him upside the head for firmly believing, for one murky second, that Bucky Egan is some sort of god, steering them along even when his absence is a gaping wound. But really, what is a god to a non-believer?

STS-3 Columbia landing at White Sands, New Mexico. The first and only time the Space Shuttle landed somewhere other than Florida or California.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
There were "strong westerly high level winds were in excess of system verification values. As a result, Columbia had to fly a less desirable high 'right base' turn onto final approach instead of the more usual and forgiving overhead pattern. At this stage in the test program the Orbiter had significantly less electronic energy management information available to the crew than on later missions."
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"The final approach was in part flown by the shuttle's autopilot, but the autoland software was not complete so it could not include an automatic landing. Rolling out on final approach, the autopilot was reengaged, and responded by closing the speedbrakes (despite the orbiter being on profile), resulting in increased speed. The autopilot then commanded full speedbrakes, and kept oscillating like this for some time."
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The shuttle was escorted by a pair of T-38 chase aircraft.
"Lousma left the autopilot activated in order to gather data on its behavior, but disconnected it again at a very late stage to touch down manually. The landing was also one of the more dramatic of the program, with the landing gear deploying at an altitude of 46 m (151 ft) at a speed of 509 km/h (316 mph) and locking just five seconds before touchdown. Early automatic speed brake closure had resulted in high speed on the inner glideslope and Lousma opted to touchdown fast rather than excessively long. The nose then began to lower at greater than planned airspeed and raised again right before nose-gear touchdown. Touchdown occurred at 16:04:46 UTC on March 30, 1982, on runway 17 at Northrop Strip."
-information from Wikipedia
Tumblr media
"A public viewing site had been set up about 7 miles northwest of the landing strip, where an estimated 7000 spectators had accumulated on Monday when the storm occurred. Some 4000 returned the next day for the landing."
Date: March 30, 1982

Executing an Airplane Descent Using the 300-Foot-Per-Mile Rule
Tumblr media
Tilak S. Ramaprakash is an aviation professional who has held positions in the industry such as auditor and contract pilot. One aspect of piloting that Tilak S. Ramaprakash is familiar with is negotiating a descent, which has the 300-foot-per-mile rule as a foundation. This sets out the vertical glideslope profile of 3 degrees as one that enables a 300 feet per nautical mile landing approach.
In practical terms, the distance from the touchdown can be multiplied by 300 feet to come up with a target altitude during the final approach. For example, when 12 miles from touchdown, the airplane should cruise at an elevation of 3,600 feet relative to the final destination. At seven miles, the aircraft should be at 2,100 feet, and three miles, 900 feet.
This rule also provides a non-precision way of estimating a 3-degree descent profile in situations where the visual approach slope indicator or electronic glideslope is unavailable. This can be particularly critical in nighttime situations of low visibility above dark terrain when premature descent becomes an issue.

36 Days To Go.
Slowly I’m making my way towards the end of ground school, and it cannot come soon enough. Putting in 15 hours work a day is really taking its toll on me, but it will be worth it eventually.
I took some time off and headed to London after class on Friday (doing Air Law revision on the train ofc). I met up with my friend and we went to the cinema before I made dinner for us. Managed to see musical Saturday afternoon too before heading back to revision and chaos. That little bit of freedom and downtime and remembering what the outside world looks like was definitely needed.
(And dinner tasted pretty awesome too if I do say so myself.)
Some day I would love to live in London. My dream is to be stationed at London City, right in the heart of that beautifully vibrant city with that crazy glideslope coming in over the shining lights of Canary Wharf. I spent about an hour stood on the shore of the Thames waiting for her to finish work. Watching the aircraft on finals or taking off from City, Stansted and Heathrow before an evening of relaxing was just enough to remind me why I’m doing this.
One day, I’m going to be in the sky with them. And that day is coming soon.
I’m still trying to get a confirmation of location/start date/estimated duration for the flying phase of training, but my school can be… slightly chaotic? I’ve been pushing for over a month now but have made little progress. Hopefully any visa’s I need will be fairly quick to obtain but we shall see. I just have to focus on studying the best I can for the next 36 days and smashing these exams, then I can make pushing for flying info a full time assault.
Hopefully if the progress test scores are anything to go by, I’ll be fine.
Gen Nav is slightly worrying right now as we are only halfway through the syllabus with only 2 weeks of teaching left… Also, on Monday we are expecting yet another instructor change (number 4! Yaaaaay!) so everyone will be suitably confused as to where we’re up to and what we’ve covered again. Never mind. I think that one I’m just going to read ahead and self-study. We’ve completely finished Air Law now and only have a few bits and pieces to clear up in AGK. I’ve finished the Met syllabus and am now just working on consolidating that knowledge, but that should be okay too.
I’m in VMC with the runway in sight, all I have to do is get the gear to the touchdown zone before conditions change again.
(Okay that was bad. Even for me that was bad. I do apologise.)

How it works: I search for the words previously assigned to me in my latest WIP and then choose four words for you to search in your WIP.
Tagged by the lovely @swifty-fox <3 thank you babe <3
my words: loose, blink, peak, sweet
I'm gonna do misc Stall Recovery Procedures bits, because I'm insane and I work on all nine (nine!! 9!!! it keeps growing out of control!!!! help) parts at once :,D
loose
Bucky is broad and solid like the face of a cliff, skin still damp and cheeks flushed from the hot water. He's a bit softer around the middle than Buck is used to seeing him, but under all the plush fat he's still strong, the ripple of back muscles flexing as he's rummaging around in the dresser hypnotic. The towel around his waist is wrapped loose enough that it slips down to reveal a hipbone, and a thatch of dark pubic hair as he turns around. His eyes rake over Buck's body draped over his bed, the look in them dark and indecipherable; his gaze snaps back to Buck's face, and he clears his throat. "You need somethin'?" His voice is low, ragged, breaking at the end of the question. The stab of arousal that hits Buck is sudden like a gut punch and hellfire-hot. He's on his feet before he even registers moving; the towel slides from his waist with a last shiver-inducing caress, and he's in front of John, both hands grabbing roughly into his curls. "I need to not think," he growls, and yanks John's head down into a bruising kiss. (Graveyard Spiral)
blink
"A… snowball fight. In skivvies." He's enunciating it very slowly and clearly, like the whole thing might make more sense that way. When Rosie just nods and hums in response, he blinks a couple of times, seemingly trying to come to terms with the concept. "I see. And how did that turn out for you?" "Two weeks with pneumonia and a month of toilet cleaning duty after. But it was worth it. You haven't heard a pure soprano until you've heard a man yowling when he's nailed in the nuts by a snowball, while in his underwear," Rosie supplies cheerily. (Glideslope Estimation)
peak
He kisses, bites and sucks a path of desire down John's throat, bruises blooming like flowers in his wake, and his hands wander the broad span of his body, tracing the tangled chain of crucifixes and dog tags to the valley between taut pecks. He scratches through John's sparse chest hair, enjoying the way it rasps against his nails, and brushes against a peaked nipple. He does it again, more deliberately, when he hears John's breath hitch, and his pulse flutter against his lips. The crucifixes and dog tags and the battered medallion of Mary clink softly, tiny silver bells calling the devout to worship; and John is devout, Buck's name leaving his lips like whispered prayer as he speeds up their rutting. He's rock hard against Buck's stomach, and holding on to his hips like a drowning man to a raft. (Graveyard Spiral)
sweet
The war against himself, against the wholly inappropriate need to kiss Buck until he makes that sweet noise again, feels like it wages on for an eternity, and ends in a truce. John lowers himself slowly, and presses his lips to Buck's fever-hot forehead, a single spark of contact sending fire down the line until the entire system is an inferno; until he can't keep himself from ghosting soft kisses lower, over the bloom of the bruise, over Buck's lids drifting shut, over silvery tear tracks tasting of salt, over a day's faint prickling stubble. (Phugoid Motion (formerly: Autokinesis))
tagging @thegrandpineapple, @feyd-meowtha, @polifandom, @bucksbluescarf aand @chirpybirdy, no pressure ofc, have fun :3
