Identity(V) Headcanons: Luca Balsa
Next up!
Again, I am new to the IDV fandom, and I have never played the game, so these headcanons are informed by my ongoing lore dives sourcing the wiki, japanese twitter responses, comics, stageplay, and more! Some of these may relate to or even contradict character backstory, and some of them are just pure vibes for me. If you like it, consider shooting a request ;)
Tumblr media
-So to start, I personally headcanon that Luca initiated the fight that led to the electrical accident. He’s always been hot-headed and impulsive, especially in regard to the source of his pride. I don’t think he intended for the confrontation with Alva to end anywhere near the way it did, but I do think he felt a good shove or two were well-warranted when he found out "his" ideas were being stolen. It’s when Alva fought back a little too viciously that the accident happened—and it well and truly was an accident. Not that it matters much when the only survivor doesn’t remember the event at all.
-He has headaches regularly, and terrible migraines at least once a week. He’s yet to find a way to relieve the migraines and, even worse, they are typically followed by an episode of more intense amnesia. Under normal circumstances, Luca’s memory problems are manageable. He doesn’t remember the accident, and there are massive blackouts in the memories beyond it, but on the average day he only struggles with small details of more recent events. During these post-migraine episodes, though, he completely loses all context for where he is, what he is doing, and who the people around him are. Most of the time, the important bits come back…but not always.
-Forgotten memories are also sometimes sporadically triggered by something mundane. A word, a texture, a sound, and suddenly he’s frozen stock-still in the face of a one-person cinematic viewing. By the time he turns to tell someone about it, though, the memory is gone again.
-To try to combat these issues, Luca keeps notebooks stashed everywhere. He writes down anything that might be important, as well as anything sentimental. The obvious issue with this, however, is that he doesn’t always remember where he keeps these notebooks.
-Despite his memory problems, his personality is largely in-tact. He maintains a lot of gentlemanly mannerisms and is cordial, if not outright friendly, to just about everyone he meets. Generally, he’s only “rude” in the sense that his attention tends to shift very abruptly.
-He’s the sort of person who appreciates variety. In people, food, scenery, just about everything. Part of why he gets along with so many people is because he can genuinely appreciate all manner of skillsets and hobbies. Likewise, to be a friend to him you only need to show appreciation for his work; understanding is not a requirement.
-It’s canon that he dislikes noise, but enjoys music. These might seem like clashing sentiments, but what it really comes down to is expected noise. Music can be relaxing, inspiring, rush-inducing! It holds your mind’s hand and hurries it along its thoughtful way. JUST noise is…chaotic, distracting, and sometimes startling. Plus, Luca likes being able to hum along while he works.
-It’s common to be static-zapped if you touch him. Long-term contact can even cause your hair to start standing on end. Unfortunately, it isn’t something he can control, so just be prepared to deal with it.
-The best Love Language to give Luca is Quality Time. He can honestly work with pretty much all of them, but Quality Time checks multiple boxes—especially if you’re good with parallel play. For one, he gets so busy with his work that it sometimes makes him feel guilty for neglecting the people he cares about. If you’re comfortable just hanging around his space, doing your own thing while he does his, it’s easier for him to check in with you between the erratic come-and-go of his thoughts. Those small bits of time add up, and he feels much better about his workaholic nature. Second, the more you permeate his memory, the less likely he feels he is to forget you. One of the few things he doesn’t struggle to remember is himself, his own name, and if you’re always there maybe it’ll be the same for you.
-He has trouble balancing his priorities. He often foregoes food, sleep, hygiene, and even his loved ones in favor of working on his invention. Sometimes he’s so absorbed in it that he doesn’t even understand the weight of hurtful decisions, but even when he does, he’d find it difficult to change.
-It’s also never impossible for the emotions that caused the accident to rear their head again. If someone were ever to intentionally sabotage Luca’s work or unapologetically steal his ideas, he may very well lash out with violence. Even if it were an accident, there’s no guarantee he wouldn’t be enraged.
-Luca has no idea what he’d do with himself if he ever did finish his invention. The guilt he feels for what may-have-happened is confused and warped, and he keeps it buried beneath his weighty obsession with the one thing he’s never forgotten…but if it were ever to be out of the way, Luca might be consumed by darkness.

Passerby: 《I knew it! I can’t believe I’m meeting you in a place like this! This is incredible!》

Itaru: 《...I have something.》
Itaru: 《The most important part of this project is how it’ll be unveiled to the residents of the area…》
Itaru: 《So, how about doing a stageplay based on an anime or game that’s known all around the world?》
Itaru: 《Among young people who love media consumption, there’s a pretty strong association of Japan as being a sort of capital of anime and video games.》
Itaru: 《For example, the game “Knights of Round” has become very widely known and has gained a lot of fans from abroad.》
Itaru: 《I believe that when a Japanese company undertook this project, they were hoping to build a bridge between Japan and this country through the arts.》
Itaru: 《It’s only logical that the ceremonial event celebrating that symbol should be associated with the culture of Japan.》
Tumblr media
Itaru: 《However, I don’t think simply introducing Japan is going to cut it for the people who truly want the world of the arts to thrive here.》
Itaru: 《I myself have performed as part of a stage play for KniRoun, and I just happened to be approached by someone on the street who recognized me for it. That made me realize just how widely acknowledged KniRoun is overseas.》
Local Company Employee B: 《That is a good point. This theater is meant for stage events, and there will be a lot of events aimed at young people there too.》
Local Company Employee B: 《It could be a really good idea to show them that it’s a theater for them.》
Itaru: 《If necessary, I can have a research firm determine how in-demand different types of content are.》
Local Company Employee A: 《Please do.》

Fic authors self rec! When you get this, reply with your favorite five fics that you've written, then pass on to at least five other writers. Spread the self-love 💕
Aww thanks :3
Finally got around to doing this whew
Everything I've written is for BG3 and pretty much about one guy (surprise!!), as I'm sure most of you already know...You will see a running theme here lmao
I've got one longfic, a bunch of one-shots, and a stageplay. No pertinent warnings on any of these besides canon-typical violence.
1. Ghost Lights Down the Chionthar -Rated M, 92,658 words.
After the defeat of the Absolute, Tav and the Emperor navigate a situationship. Contains nebulous magnetism, comical circling, gentle bickering, and certainly no development of any feelings whatsoever, as that would be ridiculous.
The squid longfic!
2. On the Nature of Rime- Rated M, 6,521 words.
Another day, another threat against Baldur's Gate. The Emperor travels to address this alongside the question of: What counts as eating people anyways?
A standalone oneshot in which the Emperor goes on an escort mission.
This is the weirdest one I've written, but also I think the best executed. About half of people said it's funny, and about half said it's sad. It's about ice cream, sort of. And about what counts as eating people lmao
3. Forever Looking Out to Sea- Rated T, 2,054 words.
The Emperor does not love the ocean. That's been gone for a long time. But if he closes his eyes, he can still summon such an eidetic impression that, for a brief, gossamer moment, he can hear the sea again in his bones, like a physical voice.
The Emperor goes shopping.
A brief one-shot about how Baldur's Gate is a trash heap city tbh
4. On the Nature of Reason- Rated E, 5,395 words.
Tav and the Emperor engage in ardent conversation.
It's a squid smut 👍
5. Carpe Corpus- Rated M, 4,658 words.
Unfortunately for Balduran, it took the whole seven days. (But he gets better.)
A stageplay in seven parts, about ceremorphosis and also vacation.
Yeah it's a play lol

An AMENDED Rundown on the Absolute Chaos That is First Quarto Hamlet
O, gather round me, my dear Shakespeare friends And let me tell to ye a tale of woe. It was a dark and drizzly winter night, When I discovered my life was a lie... This tale is a tragedy, one of Shakespeare sources turned into gardening websites, "misdated" quartos, and failed internet archives. It is also a story of the quarto itself, an early printing of our beloved Danish Prince's play, including an implied Hamlet/Horatio coffee date, weird and extremely short soliloquies, and Gertrude with a hint of motivation and autonomy.
But let us start from the beginning. Long ago, in the year of our lord 2022, I pulled a Christmas Eve all-nighter to bring you this post: https://www.tumblr.com/withasideofshakespeare/704686395278622720/a-rundown-on-the-absolute-chaos-that-is-first?source=share
It was popularish in Shakespeare circles, which is why I am amending it now! I returned to it tonight, only to discover a few problems with my dates and, more importantly, a mystery in which one of my sources miraculously turned into a link to a gardening website...
Anyhow, let us begin with the quarto! TL;DR: Multiple versions of Hamlet were printed between 1603 and 1637 (yes, post-folio) with major character and plot differences between them. The first quarto (aka Q1) is best known for its particular brand of chaos with brief soliloquies, an extra-sad Hamlet, some mother-son bonding, weird early modern spelling, and deleted/adapted scenes with major influences on the plot of the play!
A long rundown is included below the cut, including new and improved sources, lore, direct quotes, and my own interpretations. Skip what bores you! And continue... if thou darest!
What is the First Quarto? Actually, what is a quarto?
Excellent questions, brave Hamlet fan! A quarto is a pamphlet created by printing something onto a large sheet of paper and then folding it to get a smaller pamphlet with more pages per big sheet (1). First Quarto Hamlet was published in 1603 and then promptly lost for an entire two centuries until it was rediscovered in 1823 in the library of Sir Henry Bunbury. Rather than printed from a manuscript of Shakespeare, Q1 seems like it may be a memorial reconstruction of the play by the actor who played Marcellus (imagine being in a movie, memorizing the script to the best of your ability, writing it down, and then selling "your" script off to the print shop), but scholars are still out on this (2).
Are you saying that Hamlet comes with the stageplay equivalent of a “deleted scenes and extra credits” movie disc?
Yep, pretty much! In fact, there are even more of these! Q2 was printed in 1604 and it seems to have made use of Shakespeare's own drafts, and rather than being pirated like Q1, it was probably printed more or less with permission. Three more subsequent quartos were published between 1611 and 1637, but they share much in common with Q2. The First Folio (F1) was published in 1623 and its copy of Hamlet was either based on another (possibly cleaner but likely farther removed from Shakespeare's own text) playhouse manuscript (2, 3). It was an early "collected works" of sorts--although missing a few plays that we now consider canon--and is the main source used today for many of the plays!
The versions of the play that we read usually include elements from both Q2 and F1.
So... Q1? How is it any different from the version we all know (and love, of course)? What do the differences mean for the plot?
We’ll start with minor differences and build up to the big ones.
Names and spellings
Most of the versions of Shakespeare's plays that we read today have updated spellings in modern English, but a true facsimile (a near-exact reprint of a text) maintains the early modern English spellings found in the original text.
For example, here is the second line of the play transcribed from F1:
Francisco: Nay answer me: stand and vnfold your selfe.
For the most part, however, the names of the characters in these later versions (ex: F1) are spelled more or less how we would spell them today. This is not so in Q1.
Laertes is “Leartes”, Ophelia is “Ofelia”, Gertrude is “Gertred” (or sometimes “Gerterd”), Rosencrantz is “Rossencraft”, Guildenstern is “Gilderstone”, and my favorite, Polonius gets a completely different name: Corambis.
(This goes on for minor characters, too. Sentinel Barnardo is “Bernardo”, Prince Fortinbras of Norway is “Fortenbrasse”, Voltemand and Cornelius--the Danish ambassadors to Norway--are “Voltemar” and “Cornelia” (genderbent Cornelius?), Osric doesn’t even get a name- he is called “the Bragart Gentleman”, the Gravediggers are called clowns, and Reynaldo (Polonius’s spy) gets a whole different name--“Montano”.)
2. Stage directions
Some of Q1's stage directions are more detailed and some are simply non-existent. For instance, when Ophelia enters singing, the direction is:
Enter Ofelia playing on a Lute, and her haire downe singing.
But when Horatio is called to assist Hamlet in spying on Claudius during the play, he has no direction to enter, instead opting to just appear magically on stage. Hamlet also doesn't even say his name, so apparently his Hamlet sense was tingling?
3. Act 3 scene reordering
Claudius and Polonius go through with the plan to have Ophelia break up with Hamlet immediately after they make it (typically, the plan is made in early II.ii and gone through with in III.i, with the players showing up and reciting Hecuba between the two events). In this version, the player scene (and Hamlet’s conversation with Polonius) happen after ‘to be or not to be’ and ‘get thee to a nunnery.’ I’m not sure if this makes more or less sense. Either way, it has a relatively minimal impact on the story.
4. Shortened lines and straightforwardness
Many lines, especially after Act 1, are significantly shortened, including some of the play's most famous speeches.
Laertes’ usually long-winded I.iii lecture on love to Ophelia is shortened to just ten lines (as opposed to the typical 40+). Polonius (er... Corambis) is still annoying and incapable of brevity, but less so than usual. His lecture on love is also cut significantly!
Hamlet’s usual assailing of Danish drinking customs (I.iv) is cut off by the ghost’s arrival. He’s still the most talkative character, but his lines are almost entirely different in some monologues, including ‘to be or not to be’!  In other spots, however, (ex: get thee to a nunnery!) the lines are near-identical. There doesn’t seem to be much rhyme or reason to where things diverge linguistically, except that when Marcellus speaks, his lines are always correct. Hm...
5. The BIG differences: Gertrude’s promise to aid Hamlet in taking revenge
Act 3, scene 4 goes about the same as usual with one major difference: Hamlet finishes off not with his usual declaration that he’s to be sent for England but with an absolutely heart-wrenching callback to act 1, in which he echoes the ghost’s lines and pleads his mother to aid him in revenge. And she agrees. Here is that scene:
Note that "U"s are sometimes "V"s and there are lots of extra "E"s!
Queene Alas, it is the weakenesse of thy braine, Which makes thy tongue to blazon thy hearts griefe: But as I haue a soule, I sweare by heauen, I neuer knew of this most horride murder: But Hamlet, this is onely fantasie, And for my loue forget these idle fits. Ham. Idle, no mother, my pulse doth beate like yours, It is not madnesse that possesseth Hamlet. O mother, if euer you did my deare father loue, Forbeare the adulterous bed to night, And win your selfe by little as you may, In time it may be you wil lothe him quite: And mother, but assist mee in reuenge, And in his death your infamy shall die. Queene Hamlet, I vow by that maiesty, That knowes our thoughts, and lookes into our hearts, I will conceale, consent, and doe my best, What stratagem soe're thou shalt deuise. Ham. It is enough, mother good night: Come sir, I'le prouide for you a graue, Who was in life a foolish prating knaue. Exit Hamlet with [Corambis/Polonius'] dead body. (Internet Shakespeare, Source #4)
Despite having seemingly major consequences for the plot, this is never discussed again. Gertrude tells Claudius in the next scene that it was Hamlet who killed Polonius (Corambis, whatever!), seemingly betraying her promise.
However, Gertrude’s admission of Hamlet’s guilt (and thus, betrayal) could come down to the circumstance she finds herself in as the next scene begins. There is no stage direction denoting her exit, so the entrance of Claudius in scene 5 may be into her room, where he would find her beside a puddle of blood, evidence of the murder. There’s no talking your way out of that one…
6. The BIGGEST difference: The added scene
After Act 4, Scene 6, (but before 4.7) comes this scene, in which Horatio informs Gertrude that Hamlet was to be executed in England but escaped:
Enter Horatio and the Queene. Hor. Madame, your sonne is safe arriv'de in Denmarke, This letter I euen now receiv'd of him, Whereas he writes how he escap't the danger, And subtle treason that the king had plotted, Being crossed by the contention of the windes, He found the Packet sent to the king of England, Wherein he saw himselfe betray'd to death, As at his next conuersion with your grace, He will relate the circumstance at full. Queene Then I perceiue there's treason in his lookes That seem'd to sugar o're his villanie: But I will soothe and please him for a time, For murderous mindes are alwayes jealous, But know not you Horatio where he is? Hor. Yes Madame, and he hath appoynted me To meete him on the east side of the Cittie To morrow morning. Queene O faile not, good Horatio, and withall, commend me A mothers care to him, bid him a while Be wary of his presence, lest that he Faile in that he goes about. Hor. Madam, neuer make doubt of that: I thinke by this the news be come to court: He is arriv'de, obserue the king, and you shall Quickely finde, Hamlet being here, Things fell not to his minde. Queene But what became of Gilderstone and Rossencraft? Hor. He being set ashore, they went for England, And in the Packet there writ down that doome To be perform'd on them poynted for him: And by great chance he had his fathers Seale, So all was done without discouerie. Queene Thankes be to heauen for blessing of the prince, Horatio once againe I take my leaue, With thowsand mothers blessings to my sonne. Horat. Madam adue. (Internet Shakespeare, Source #4)
First of all, the implication of Hamlet and Horatio's little date in the city is adorable ("Yes Madame, and he hath appoynted me / To meete him on the east side of the Cittie / To morrow morning.") It reads like they're going out for coffee!
And perhaps more plot relevant: if Gertrude knows of Claudius’s treachery ("there's treason in his lookes"), her death at the end of the play does not look like much of an accident. She is aware that Claudius killed her husband and is actively trying to kill her son and she still drinks the wine meant for Hamlet!
Now, the moment we’ve all been waiting for! My thoughts! Yippee!  On Gertrude: WOW! I’m convinced that she is done dirty by F1and Q2! She and Hamlet have a much better relationship (Gertrude genuinely worries about his well-being throughout the play.) She has an actual personality that is tied into her role in the story and as a mother. I love Q1 Gertrude even though in the end, there’s nothing she can do to save Hamlet from being found out in the murder of Polonius and eventually dying in the duel. Her drinking the poisoned wine seems like an act of desperation (or sacrifice? she never asks Hamlet to drink!) rather than an accident.
On the language: I think Q1′s biggest shortcoming is its comparatively simplistic language, especially in 'to be or not to be,' which is written like this in the quarto:
Ham. To be, or not to be, I there's the point, To Die, to sleepe, is that all? I all: No, to sleepe, to dreame, I mary there it goes, For in that dreame of death, when wee awake, And borne before an euerlasting Iudge [judge], From whence no passenger euer retur'nd, The vndiscouered country, at whose sight The happy smile, and the accursed damn'd. But for this, the ioyfull hope of this, Whol'd beare the scornes and flattery of the world, Scorned by the right rich, the rich curssed of the poore? The widow being oppressed, the orphan wrong'd, The taste of hunger, or a tirants raigne, And thousand more calamities besides, To grunt and sweate vnder this weary life, When that he may his full Quietus make, With a bare bodkin, who would this indure, But for a hope of something after death? Which pusles [puzzles] the braine, and doth confound the sence, Which makes vs rather beare those euilles we haue, Than flie to others that we know not of. I that, O this conscience makes cowardes of vs all, Lady in thy orizons, be all my sinnes remembred. (Internet Shakespeare, Source #4)
The verse is actually closer to perfect iambic pentameter (meaning more lines have exactly ten syllables and consist entirely of iambs--"da-DUM") than in the Folio, which includes many 11-syllable lines. The result of this, however, is that Hamlet comes across here as considerably less frantic (those too-long verse lines in F1 make it feel like he is shoving words into too short a time, which is so very on-theme for him) and more... sad. Somehow, Q1 Hamlet manages to deserve a hug even MORE than F1 Hamlet!
Nevertheless, this speech doesn't hit the way it does in later printings and I have to say I prefer the Folio here.
On the ending: The ending suffers from the same effect ‘to be or not to be’ does--it is simpler and (imo) lacks some of the emotion that F1 emphasizes. Hamlet’s final speech is significantly cut down and Horatio’s last lines aren’t quite so potent--although they’re still sweet!
Horatio. Content your selues, Ile shew to all, the ground, The first beginning of this Tragedy: Let there a scaffold be rearde vp in the market place, And let the State of the world be there: Where you shall heare such a sad story tolde, That neuer mortall man could more vnfolde. (Internet Shakespeare, Source #4)
Horatio generally is a more active character in Q1 Hamlet. This ending suits this characterization. He will tell Hamlet’s story, tragic as it may be. It reminds me a bit of We Raise Our Cups from Hadestown. I appreciate that this isn't a request but a command: put up a stage, I will tell this story. Closing notes: After over a year, it was due time this post received an update. My main revisions were in regard to source verification. Somehow, in the last year or so, one of my old sources went from linking to a PDF of Q1 to a garden website (???) and some citations were missing from the get-go as a result of this being an independently researched post that involved pulling an all-nighter on Christmas Eve (but no excuses, we need sources!)
I have also corrected some badly worded commentary implying that the Folio's verse is more iambic pentameter-y (it's not; in fact, Q1 tends to "normalize" its verse to make it fit a typical blank verse scheme better than the Folio's does--the lines actually flow better, typically have exactly ten syllables, and use more iambs than Q1's) as well as that the spelling in the Folio is any more modern than those in Q1 (they're both in early modern English; I was mistakenly reading a modernized Folio and assuming it to be a transcription--nice one, 17-year-old Dianthus!) Additionally, I corrected the line breaks in my verse transcriptions and returned the block quotations to their original early modern English, which feels more authentic to what was actually written. A few other details and notes were added here and there, but the majority of the substance is the same.
Overall, if you still haven't read Q1, you absolutely should! Once you struggle through the spelling for a while, you'll get used to it and it'll be just as easy as modern English! If you'd prefer to just start with the modern English, I have also linked a modern translation below (source 5). And finally, my sources! Not up to citation standards but very user-friendly I hope... 1. Oxford English Dictionary 2. Internet Shakespeare, Hamlet, "The Texts", David Bevington (https://internetshakespeare.uvic.ca/doc/Ham_TextIntro/index.html) 3. The Riverside Shakespeare (pub. Houghton Mifflin Company; G.B. Evans, et al.) 4. Internet Shakespeare, First Quarto (facsimile--in early modern English) (https://internetshakespeare.uvic.ca/doc/Ham_Q1/complete/index.html) 5. Internet Shakespeare, First Quarto (modern English) (https://internetshakespeare.uvic.ca/doc/Ham_Q1M/index.html)
And here conclude we our scholarly tale, Of sources, citation, and Christmastime too, Go read the First Quarto! And here, I leave you.

This isn't necessarily a pet peeve because I play into this characterisation as well, but it surprises me how parts of the fandom genuinely believe Genesis is the flamboyant theatre kid of the trio who can't go for two seconds without reciting his favourite poem.
Genesis' obsession with the Loveless text is purely academic as he spends years deciphering its secrets, especially the missing last chapter. His paper on the subject becomes a best-selling textbook when it was published after his "death". Everyone scoffs at Genesis reciting the text and pointing out the parallels of the characters' story arcs to their own, but he turns out to be right (he gets the character roles the wrong way round as Zack is the true hero of the story but he was correct that the story is repeating itself).
Fanon!Genesis shows great interest in the adapted stageplay (whether he's a diehard fanboy or snobbish nitpicking critic), but we never learn Canon!Genesis' opinion on the play changing the text or if he's even seen it.
His interest in agriculture rarely comes up in fanon despite growing up on an apple farm and winning an award for "National Agriculture Awards, Processed Foods Category" and plays a vital role in his characterisation.

Any suggestions for where and what order to watch Revue Starlight?
There's only one season, so that's pretty self-explanatory; after that there are 3(?) short OVAs that come immediately afterwards. I love them, but they really just exist for fun little character moments, so if you're not interested in that, skipping them won't have you missing anything (though, again, I love them so much. they're so fun).
Then there's the movies. Technically there's two; Rondo, Rondo, Rondo and Gekijōban. Rondo is essentially just a recap of the first season, but there is a few extra scenes that provide further context, and it also leads directly into the last movie, so it'd probably be best to at least find that last scene. Then there's Gekijōban, which is the final. I cannot legally say anything more about that movie because I'll never be able to stop. It's phenomenal.
(Of course nothing of what I've said has had anything to do with the stageplays, which are part of another canon, because that's an entirely different can of worms. I'd suggest watching the show+movie first before even approaching the stageplays. You don't need to know anything about them for the show.)

And God, that's what I love about the stage play. It has the limitations of time and what practical effects can be done live on an assumedly small budget, which breeds innovations like the wrong vote execution giving probably the best send off for Ishimondo in the canon Killing Game context, Celestia's "murder" of Sakura playing into her talent as a gambler, and now this simple but effective execution. It really is my favorite version of the THH story for that reason.
Ask referring to this.
Yeah, the people in charge of the story changes for the thh stageplay were so based for their decisions.
They gave us not one, but TWO mondo executions better than the actual game. And as much as I love my guy Ishida, the way Taka was executed for voting for himself is a much more satisfying and thematically appropriate way for him to die. And Celeste as well actually using her ultimate for a trial. The first time she ever loses a bet is the thing that costs her her life. I’m sure Celeste enjoyers have other reasons why it fits better because they know more about her, but I think it’s a very good change.
Oh yeah, and didn’t Makoto let Junko live in the stageplay version? It wasn’t even a change made for timing purposes. I think the writer’s thought that Junko having to live with the fact that she failed and all that fun stuff was genuinely a better fate for her. Either that or they couldn’t figure out a way to give her a more heightened execution than the spears with all their restrictions so decided to omit her death altogether.
Also, the stageplay has little character moments that the game didn’t. Which isn’t really a writing thing, but I’m sure it comes down to some of the dialogue and the actors being a able to y’know act and add some flavor to their characters, physically. (Something that comes to mind is Taka saying smth about not running in the halls and then proceeding to speed walk across the stage with a big smile on his face. It’s so funny and makes him endearing to the audience right off the bat.) This is something that the game couldn’t do because it’s a VN and the anime could’ve done but… well we know what happened there.
All of this to say, I agree. The stageplay is so good. It’s one of those rare adaptations that actually manages to make changes to the source material that builds and adds more to the story rather than takes away. Ironically, it does this by shortening the story by a ton. But yeah, story-wise, the stageplay is the the best version of thh. In my opinion.

SORRY I WAS THINKING ABOUT THIS WHILE STUDYING BUT
Since you've been talking about Irene lately I just wanted to hop in here and 🥺🥺 ermmm do you think she ever meets Valentine? What do you think she thinks of him? WIWIIWIW
Tumblr media
OMGGGG YEYSYEYSYES I GET IT I GET IT THE STAGEPLAY UNIVERSE WHERE IT SUPPORTS NON CANON INTERACTIONS YEYSYEYYSYSYEE I TOTALLY GET WHAT YOU'RE SAYING
i mean in the stageplay universe of COURSE irene is going to meet valentine one way or another :3 i actually thought maybe irene met him through befriending victor and talked to him more because she found him interesting! (preferring to write than to vocally communicate) at one point victor would write: "i have a brother, i hope you both meet soon!"
BUT BUT I THINK IT WOULD BE SO CUTE TOO IF irene had met eli, luca and andrew (doesn't have to be all, could be one of them too) and they all would describe valentine to be like "mm he is a little silly but I think you will like him"
(if norton had something to say here he would be like: "hes a bit too noisy but hes not bad so its ok hmph") HEHEHEHE
and irenes like ooo he sounds soso nice!!! 🥺 and then i bet you... one day at the dinner table where everyone is together - valentine enters and goes YAHOOOOOOOOOO HAIIIIII i am back!!!! all of his friends + victor greets him and irenes like whoa... they werent kidding.. he silly.... and eli's like 🤓 ☝️ this is irene i dont think you guys met yet. and then this is where i include your idea - valentine SHAKES HER HAND AGGRESSIVELY AND GOES HIMYNAMEISVALENTINEVICTORHASTOLDMANYTHINGSABOUTYOUHAIHAIAHAI and shes like omaga he is my new best friend WKWJEJWHJWKWWJEHHEHWJAA
BONUS. THEY LOVE EACH OTHERS HAIR. BLONDE SOLIDARITY AND ITS VERY LONG HEHEHEHEHE

Do you have any other favourite bf's dramas?
OH YES I DO
I have stories that I love for everything they are:
Mutant Phase! It was the first audio drama I’d listened to. To this day voice of the dalek Emperor in this play gives me chills. He sounds so grand, and what an exciting contrast it is to the fact that he had to hang around as an ordinary fellow for a long time. And I absolutely adore the dalek-pandemic theme too!
Spare parts! They say in DW you can choose a canon for yourself, so for me Doctorman Allan is the only important creator of the cybermen (I apologise to their fans). And I cherish this depressed alcoholic lady with whole my heart. Also I love how gently this drama describes the cold doomed world of ancient Mondas and it’s poor hopeless nation.
The curse of the daleks (from stageplays)! I’m not sure how I became so affectionate about this one. It’s super old-fashioned but that’s kind of what makes it special. And the the other important thing is the voice acting. All actors did such a great job, each character feels truly alive no matter how stereotypical they were originally written)
Jubilee! It’s such a gem! This story is absolutely gorgeous in terms of writing, acting and at the time it has healed my yearning for stories with "emotional" daleks. This audio drama is among the best of the best.
Flip-Flop! It isn’t really something beyond average, but it has tickled my mind quite a bit, so I recommend it) There’re some nice characters too.
And then there’re few stories I enjoy bc of certain characters:
Dalek Empire series! It is a great epic story with a lot of nice characters and very well written plot (I especially love the time perception in this series). But the Mentor is what makes me most excited about it. The way she was described at first and then the way she behaves in the story make me wish to learn more about her. I’m so affectionate towards her!
Paradise 5 (from lost stories)! Love it because of Gabriel and Mickle characters. I value it when authors manage two show romantic relationships between two mature people who seem just as interesting when separated and are easy to perceive as self-sufficient beings even though they are in a close relationship. Sadly that occurs rarely(

My relationship with Hypmic for now is kind of funny lol
I got into it theough the music, then the manga, arb, and hypstage. the stageplays were by far the coolest thing but I loved the series as a whole. I found it at a very vulnerable time and oops! ended up becoming a Jakurai yumejoshi. I still am now, I think about the goof every day— but I don't really participate anymore
I didn't really choose to but finding the new stageplays got more difficult, I got burnout so I stopped posting art, and then the whole discord thing happened with slug. I hate discord so I never log in to read the manga, now I'm nearly two years behind
so I kind of took a step back. Just a Jakurai yume in hypmic retirement. I still listen to the songs sometimes and log in arb for the Jakurai cards. But I no longer have sources to know what's going on
What's the weird management issues and the current state of the stageplays? I'm seeing a lot of negativity and I don't know what brought that on
hypmic losing all easily accessible centralised sources of translations (the old hypmic translators getting head hunted by kr themselves and slug 😕😕😕) did about as much damage to hypmic as an eng fandom as the current happenings have imo lmao
i do think the best way to enjoy a fandom is huddling in a corner with people who will scream with you about content lmao but it’s gotta be hard to do that when you don’t know what to scream about lmao
the manga isn’t caught up with canon so if you ever feel like sitting down and catching up, the wiki has a list of the drama tracks and their translations, and you can listen to them on youtube for that ease of use 🤗
and i just happened to answer a question about the stage how about that lol

I'm loving the lore for ClayClan so far!! How involved are leaders with the everyday culture of the Clan? Watching stageplays, weaving stories of their own, etc. I ask, because in canon, leaders tend to feel entirely separate from the Clan they're leading.
Thank you! I absolutely agree with your point about canon. I think it's an issue that's gotten worse in recent arcs - seems like the leaders just sit in their den all day unless they're calling a meeting... it's weird! So yes, leaders in ClayClan are much more involved; they're meant to best represent Hyaash and Mrrha's ideals, standing as the "ideal Clanmate" that other cats can look up to. I'll go into two notable leaders as an example.
First we have Needlestar, the cat who was in charge before the current leader Timberstar. They were very very good at their job! They were connected tightly to the Clan and often threw themself into danger to save Clanmates. They're remembered for these feats; defeating a coyote alone, luring a rabid raccoon away from a patrol, pulling a rough-legged hawk of the sky to save a kit... they also adored story-telling, and often told their own (dramatized) versions of their many adventures. Modern cats would consider them close to the ideal leader.
Second we have Timberstar, ClayClan's leader as of Heart Rot. Timberstar is a good leader, but he isn't as good as Needlestar was - his primary issues is that he prioritizes his family's lives over his duty to the Clan. This isn't an issue that ClayClan is aware of yet, but it becomes obvious to certain cats during the storyline. There's a lot to discuss regarding Timberstar and Needlestar's relationship (and the skeletons in Timberstar's closet)... I'll have to talk about it a story-related post at some point.
I'll also take this time to note that leaders in ClayClan do not have nine lives! Since I want the mythology to be left vague, I decided to remove that. Leaders have one death just like everyone else.

hewwo nika. please enlighten me on the wonderful world of revue starlight... where would be the best place to start, since i know it's a multimedia series?
HI FAITH!!!! 😊 Well. Basically the revue starlight canon is the anime, movie(s), stageplays and gacha game. I haven't seen the stageplays myself and while i THINK they came first they're not as accessible as the rest.
the 12 episode anime and then "revue starlight the movie (aka revue starlight gekijouban)" are the best place to start. there's also a recap movie (rondo rondo rondo) which is basically the same as the series just condensed and with a few extra scenes regarding a certain character. (DON'T WATCH THIS IF YOU HAVEN'T WATCHED THE SERIES FIRST THOUGH)
AS FOR THE GAME i don't think it's really necessary as such?? but you can read the stories online without having to play the game and there are some really good characters that get introduced in it :3 there's also a visual novel (iirc) coming out sometime but i have no idea if it will get localised.
AS A GENERAL THING THO revue starlight is a bit. abstract. it's worth watching the series → watching the movie → watching the series again, but with added context :3 IT'S NOT LIKE. SUPER COMPLICATED or anything like that but on my first watch of it i went through the series way too fast and missed a lot of the symbolism and subtle storytelling
IT'S SO GOOD THOUGH if u do end up watching it send me a message i would love to hear your thoughts :3 🫶🫶🫶🫶

OKAY SO.

Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
gonna have 2 explain danganronpa first. Okay so these people with Ultimates (being the best at something, ie, Ultimate Mechanic, Ultimate Pop Star, Ultimate Basball Star) get offered a place at hopes peak academy, the Ultimate highschool. But OHNO it's actually a killing gamr !!!! And they have to kill someone to escape !!!! The trials work like: somebody (the blackended) kills somebody, body gets found, trial happens (like a court. They convict the blackended of murder), if the blackended gets away with it without being caught they get to escape, if the blackended gets caught they get executed in the most unnecessarily over the top ways ever
MAJOR TRIAL TWO SPOILERS AHEAD !!! AND FUCK SHIT I JUST ENDED UP WRITUNG A RECAP OF TRIAL TWO 😭😭😭
Mondo kills someone (chihiro), and before the body gets found, him and kiyotaka become "friends" (canon tries to play it off as bromance but they sucked at it. they're gay), then FUCK body gets found, trial happens, Kiyotaka denies it the whole time, ends up voting for himself, majority wins though sucks to suck (THIS IS DIFFERENT IN THE STAGEPLAY), mondo gets executed, Kiyotaka goes nonverbal (bc he's autistic . you can rip that headcannon out kf my cold dead hands), shit happens (idek how to explain it. gets willingly possessed basically), and wgoaghhh he's different now, kiyondo ishida exists now:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
anyway they're . Idek how to explain them/pos
OKAAAYYT I have no idea where to keep going from this nowwww bc this is about ishimondo and not a recap of the game
Hopefully that was decent lol

so this spiraled out of control, and this is me warning that my messages ahead are gonna get pretty long, so my apologies for clogging up your inbox with my ramblings as i do my best to answer your questions and stuff 😅 so basically: most toku are elaborate children's toy commercials, superhero shows, and shounen manga/anime but live-action (complete with the homoeroticism) rolled into one, although a good portion of its protagonists (especially in kamen rider, the franchise i'm most familiar with atm) are actually adults this time, albeit usually 20-something prettyboys (as to why, look up the odagiri effect if you haven't heard of it yet). and officially, toku isn't really a genre (stuff like godzilla are also considered toku), but many people outside of the jpn fandom basically treat it as such in the way they treat shounen, shoujo, seinen, josei, etc. so i guess it doesn't really matter anymore atp? (1/?)
(rest of ur asks under the cut!)
some toku are more adult-oriented, though those tend to be relegated to webseries and movies that aren't aired on tv, but again i'm not as familiar with that stuff rn. and you're right about the number of episodes - among the toku big 3 (kr, super sentai - aka the basis for power rangers, ultraman), kr and sentai seasons tend to be ~50 episodes while ultraman seasons are often around 25 instead. also all 3 of these air shows annually, but each is generally stand-alone albeit taking place in the same wider universe (mcu vibes except i think it's somewhat less annoying and with a less strict sense of having to make everything 'canon') and which can be loosely connected enough for them to have crossover movies every so often (though yeah, those tend to be not officially canon) (2/?)
among those big 3 as well, kr is definitely the go-to if you're interested in m/m subtext, whereas it's apparently less frequent (but definitely still present occasionally) in sentai and ultraman, especially as sentai in particular seems to be more big on the power of platonic friendship and family (not so sure on ultraman as that's the most unfamiliar series to me for now, though fwiw i think the template of the steel samurai in aa is relatively closer to ultraman than to the other big 2 franchises) (3/?)
as for what i'd recommend - i've actually only gotten into toku recently, but i'd say kr build (the season where inukai and akaso play the leads) is a pretty good place to start tbh! i haven't actually finished it myself, but i'm really enjoying it so far, and while i've heard it kinda stumbles in the latter third, it's generally agreed upon to be a solid season with a fairly cohesive plot and compelling characters (and the ending is kinda insane from what i know, but like mostly in a good way), and i agree so far as well. it's also one of the seasons specifically conceived as a callback to the very first kr shows in the showa era, so this way, you can get a pretty good sense of the original themes of kr even without watching said showa-era shows right away. and each kr season has its own themes too, with build's being focused on science and scientific principles, hence the protagonist here being a physicist (4/?)
build is also known for having a suspenseful thriller-like plot with a lot of twists and turns, so it's best to go in as blind as possible aside from like a cursory glance at its synopsis - basically don't follow my example, as i got spoiled for all the major plot twists and while i'm still liking the show and now focusing more on seeing how well-foreshadowed and built-up (ha) said twists have been so far, i definitely sometimes catch myself wishing i'd been a more unaware viewer from the start lol. and it's 49 episodes long (with some spin-off movies and a stageplay that, while not strictly necessary to watch due to either being not officially canon or not really relevant to the main plot, apparently do enhance the viewing experience and still tie in nicely to aspects of the main series and its character development), but due to the nature of its thriller-like story meant to hook viewers in, it might not actually take too long for you to finish (though i personally am taking it more slow and steady) (5/?)
as for the gay stuff, build is definitely worth checking out as the very originator of the life-changing phrase 'heated drama between men' (from this official promotional article www . toei . co . jp/tv/build/story/1210272_2766.html) and is also generally agreed to be one of the top kr shows (and the most recent one in years) to lay on extreme gay subtext (and again, that's saying something considering kr homoeroticism as a whole, and it's so palpable they've gotten many straight people and dudebro fans on reddit and twitter to also agree they're gay; other seasons with very heavy subtext between its 2 male leads that i can think of off the top of my head rn are ooo, blade, and ofc kuuga, the grandpa of all heisei kr shows) (6/?)
sento (the protagonist, played by inukai) and banjou (the deuteragonist, played by akaso) are considered iconic nowadays in helping elevate the primary x secondary rider partnership (bc going by those other mentioned extremely gay-coded relationships from previous seasons, none of them count as primary x secondary), and banjou by himself is often seen as redefining the secondary rider role (and also sento/banjou, or ryusen, is like peak m/m nerd x jock romance to me in general, and a fun bonus for me is even if it's yaoi, they both dress a lot like butch lesbians so in my mind they're kinda lesbian-adjacent to me, an actual lesbian). they're also really popular that they've gotten official couple's rings merch (based on their animal motifs of rabbit for sento and dragon for banjou), in the vein of narumitsu (and klapollo too if i'm not misremembering?), kawoshin, those guys from promare and code geass, etc (7/?)
speaking of aa again, i do think edgeworth would generally enjoy kr, gay subtext and all (the steel samurai probably contains heated drama between men too), and even though idk yet if kr and/or build would be his favorite toku shows as a whole, i definitely think he'd find himself relating to sento in many ways (they're both gay-coded identity crisis-having autistic guys with red in their color schemes, among some other similarities you'll discover along the way), but i think sento's relationship with misora (the main female character and his younger sister-ish figure) is overall more akin to phoenix and maya's than to edgeworth and franziska's. i don't think banjou and phoenix are that similar though, aside from being bi-coded blue-themed men associated with dragons, but edgeworth might still find a way to draw some parallels between his relationship with phoenix to the ryusen dynamic (8/?)
and while i can't guarantee build will make you feel as crazy (positive) as it's making me rn, i think you'll still like sento/banjou and the show itself... also, sento and banjou are pretty much the opposites personality-wise of inukai and akaso's characters in odt and cm (i also watched and enjoyed both shows prior to watching build, and yeah it's definitely a bit of a whiplash to see how different their respective characters are, though it does tickle me to imagine the possibility that the drama got so heated in build it inspired them to act in full-blown bls a few years later). like sento is an 'egotistical genius superhero' with a heart of gold whose arrogance is partly a facade and coping mechanism for his identity issues, and banjou is basically an adhd icon and ex-pro boxer (although lbr akaso doesn't really have a convincing enough physique for it, but well i can forgive it in the end because he's a great actor otherwise) who's very much an 'act/punch first, think later' type of dumbass but who's also a kind person at heart, albeit starting out as a bit of a selfish jerk whose (kinda understandably, in hindsight) distrustful nature makes him look out only mainly for himself and his small circle of loved ones, so i think it's nice to see both men's acting range (9/?)
anyway i'd say the love story (platonic or romantic, but well. it's really hard to read it as purely the former) between sento and banjou is truly at the heart of the show (like it's literally a story about building relationships) - in short, build is that "stop war start gay" graffitti meme. but for a better summary of what i do like overall about build that's also not very spoilery: www . tumblr . com/timetoddddavis/711997352927510528?source=share also i'm obsessed with this fmv so i must inflict it (positively) on every person i can (it's a bit spoilery but it's all out of context so it's not that big of a deal): youtu . be/-Gjzr5HmmfY?si=HUr8oZezqV_lIusZ (10/?)
(also even if you end up concluding that toku really isn't your cup of tea, you can at least maybe think of your experiences as a way to improve future aa headcanons and fics wrt its depiction of the steel samurai and company i guess?) this has gotten long enough that i'll stop here, but i did have some additional thoughts on build's female characters (sadly there's only a few of them, but they're treated well enough considered how men-centric kr generally is), how kr has actually and refreshingly also been dipping its toes into yuri(bait) recently, and the kinda morbidly funny anecdote about akaso thinking he might have gotten a crush on inukai on their first day of filming but it was actually heat stress affecting him, but i'll save those for another time if you're curious enough or are okay with me continuing to ramble. i really appreciate your time and attention, and thank you so much for entertaining me and my toku fixation :-) (11/11)
also toku fans have all made our jokes about the energy emanated by that classic 'heated drama between men' photobook image of inukai and akaso as sento and banjou but i'm also not kidding when i unironically think their posing in that picture perfectly encapsulates the characters' relationship by the end of the show... their relationship development from reluctant and kinda antagonistic allies to friends to beloved (and kinda codependent ngl but that just gives it more flavor to me, and also understandable given the circumstances of everything) partners really is a sight to behold <3
oh my god anon . thank u so much for the detailed explanation but also how long did these take u to type theres So Much Info Here ??? respect to ur fixation tho i dont think i would ever be so clear and coherent talking abt my blorbos afjdskfjkd
ANYWAY !!! u have def caught my interest w build (esp w the aa parallels and the rings mention i had no idea other franchises do it too) (also in the post u linked this line "it stars a silly little rabbit, the silly little rabbit has a death wish" i Need to understand the context behind that) so i might actually watch the first few eps and see if i enjoy it?? the chara dynamics sound rlly interesting already from ur descriptions so im curious abt how theyre in the show 👀 if theres any specific place/site ud recommend i watch id appreciate that too bc i have no idea where to look kfjdks
