So, yesterday was amazing!!! Minnie performed a solo version of 'Dahlia', that I need the studio version of, pronto. I also have a recoding of Shuhua sexy dancing to Britney Spears that still leaves me a melted pudle on the floor. She did so great! I loved the way we all sung together to Yuqi's solo especially. It created such a sweet moment that is nothing short of 'gezellig'. This is a Dutch word that doesn't really has an English equivalent, a cosy, friendly vibe would be the closest. It was so strong, I felt the urge to sling my arm over a random girl's shoulder because of the magic in the air. Obviously I didn't because that would be weird. Nothing short of amazing. They were as gorgeous as I expected them to be, just like they were as talented as I expected them to be. Again, Minnie's Dahlia performance was to die for. Oh, I get chills from just thinking about it! It was phenomenal. She was the moment. I met some nice people I exchanged socials with, so that was great. one of them mentioned they had Miyeon's solo album so I tried my best to recor the performance and my recording was better then his so he's happy with my footage! He in return had managed to capture a short part of Minnie's Dahlia performance, which made me happy. I'm currently still in my reliving the concert phase, and all the footage does help me fangirl it out! I apologize to the girl in front of me who got caught between me, and a small group of Shuhua fans in front of her. She was trapped in a Shuhua mania LOL. My only issues with the concert was that obviously, I wished they would keep performing forever, how any attempt to record the Dahlia performance failed, how people already started clapping during Minnie's famous highnote in Lion instead of clapping after the high note because I seriously wished to enjoy that and the German men next to me. I'll admit, I wasn't picture perfect as I just did a Kuroko to swim along in the crowd because my short ass couldn't see a thing, until I was behind one of these dudes. He was probably about 2 meter and he had noticed me trying to hop behind him in an attempt to see the stage. I could literally feel his body tighten as if he were trying to push me away, so I pushed him away instead. Nobody got injured and with him out of the way I could finally see. Another girl who's friend I landed next to shot me a disapproving look, but throughout the concert all I could think of was, 'Girl, I did you a favor', because these dudes were genuine assholes. For one, they were also attending their Berlin concert which made some of their actions feel more entitled, these men were at least in their mid-thirties which made them cursing amongst themselves about the kids attending the concert feel really mean-spirited (dude, it's less worse then a Blackpink concert and you're older then the demographic of the group which are college students so don't whine about being surrounded by people younger then you), they trash-talked my country, when a girl got a text message the other dude was seriously peering over her shoulder and reading whatever she was typing as a reply, there was an overweight woman at the front who either needed something to drink or to go to the toilet and nobody includng the 2M German guy wouldn't budge even for her passing and she was apologizing over and over as if the crowd not making way for her was her fault when everyone else were the ones literally acting like, 'screw this lady's safety. I don't want to lose a single second of recording the performances because she needs to leave'. I tried to give her a comforting hand on her shoulder and a smile as she tried to squirm between me (who was the only one stepping aside) and the German dude. I felt so bad for her. I could go on about these dudes just being rude. To the two girls next to me, you dodged a bullet because these guys were douchebags who felt like a rain on my Neverland parade. I suppose that was my punishment for pushing so I could actually see the concert. Like we say in my tongue, 'God punishes immediately'.

the month has been filled with practice, he found it hard to actually focus on one thing each day and couldn’t schedule things as easily as he had in february but despite the chaos he managed to record his lines for the new album & practice his lines for aju nice.

one thing that weighed on his chest was his lines for both aju nice and boomboom, he had gotten the lines that the previous main vocal jinki, had sung and now he felt pressured because he wondered if he could actually pull them off but thanks to @rkxroyal​ he finds some solace. taeyong took care of the adlibs, so it wasn’t too bad and when he got used to it he managed to deliver his lines without feeling pressured, they were his lines now.

mentally he didn’t think he was ready but once there, jaehyun found himself confident despite himself and so when he was on stage he oozed with confidence.

in march the schedules had him a little overwhelmed, it took a little while for it to sink in that he would be performing on stage in front of many people and that he would be opening aju nice. when that sank in he hyper-focused on doing that well.

other than that he found it interested to be apart of @rktaeyxng​‘s teaser and even filming his own teaser.

he��s even gotten used to the blonde hair now-- he no longer feels like he’s looking at a stranger in the mirror.

recording the songs for the new mini-album helped him actually realize that wow he was debuting-- overall his favorite songs on the album is: pretty u, smile flower and pinwheel.

「 relationships 」

thought out this month jaehyun has worked towards getting closer to the other convex members, especially his roommate @rkhyun​ -- they, however, had an interesting first meeting.

there was also moment where jaehyun accidentally fell asleep in @seungcheolrk​‘s bed after having practiced a little too hard for his own good.

the elephant in the room, @rkjuhee​, after making up with juhee in february jaehyun couldn’t shake a feeling off his chest. feelings for juhee. so on white day ( as appropriate as the date is ) he texted her to come out knowing full well that what he was about to do would make her flustered and stressed, he knew that it was better to get it off his chest. he doesn’t expect her to return his feelings either but he confessed, that he has feelings for her.

after that night he manages to act more than normal and on the day of the music bank spring concert when he sees her for the first time, he actually smiles at her despite her not having given him a proper answer.

Chapter 37: In Devil’s Grip

“An abyss which in our language is called shin’en.”

37-1 Raining down like a hailstorm.

This chapter throws Graviton enemies at you. Luckily, I was able to roll Iskar, an A-class Photon unit, when the Wild Beast adventurers got introduced. I know people at the time were pissed that there were lower class units (which would dilute the pool) but… look, not everyone would whale for the higher units nor has the patience to max SB/Luck everyone.

In lieu of not having A’misandra nor Amina, I maxed out the Whitewyrm Wand and stuck it on Zafitte^ to make her something of a healer. The otomo casts Tera Heal, chain; so with that and Giga Regen, my party won’t be hurting for healing.

Someone asked me if I’ll tackle the two Animata bosses. I did fight them, but I dunno if I’ll post up any updates about them. Probably not.

It starts with a small number of these new enemies.

Pretty self-explanatory, I think.

I do like how you can see the two black Animatas in this stage’s background.

37-2 Scorching barrier stretched across the sky.

Nothing good, evidently. Anyway, in this stage twisters will spawn as you progress through it, starting with this one, adding one more as you move on,

and ending with four on the field.

37-3 A sharp gaze drilling into his back.

The whispering leader sensed a sharp gaze

drilling into his back. It was Pa'keppar.

 “Chief! How long do you plan to go on hiding here?!”

We’re introduced to some new enemies.

The Incapacitators, who only attack rows

...and Fragmentors, whose Powered Point Jammer skill will make the bar charge slower than normal for three turns.

37-4 Want us to stand back and do nothing?

A fallen Spirit with burned wings and

molten Negas lay in front of you.

 They sacrificed themselves to destroy

the barrier generator.

 “Why have you done this... for us?”

 No one could have known the answer.

All that remained was the path these

unexpected benefactors had given

their lives to clear for you.

 ---Audience room

 "While we're talking here, much blood may be

getting spilled, all for our sake! Chief, how can

you be so insensitive to their suffering?"

 "Thanks to their sacrifice, peace will be

brought to our lands, and we will be protected.

There is no better solution."

"You really think that?! You trust the word of

a devil who leaves death in her wake, and

want us to stand back and do nothing?"

 "Would you rather send our people to certain

death? I don't understand you, Pa'keppar!"

 "And these strangers who throw away their

lives for us, do they not matter to you?!"

Four of the five fights here are against the level 79 Incapacitators.

Finally, for the last floor, there is a stronger Incapacitator. Three rows! Golly!

37-5 Became tears that fell from his eyes.

It’s noble of them, but certainly foolhardy. Still, it’s good to know there are people who are behind the crew’s backs.

The fights here are against Incapacitators and Fragmentors.

37-6 Filled with the remnants of unconscious feelings…

And we meet, and get a name for, the second riftworlder.

There are only three battles, but there are a decent number of enemies. The twisters are more of an annoyance, but it’s still something to look out for.

Especially in cases like this.

Poor Bahl was on the verge of death when I cleared this part of the stage.

I guess if you’re not aware of the other floor positions or you like to clump your units together, the twisters could make moving them around a little annoying.

37-7 Come forth into this world!

“What did you create using the Animata?”

��Create?”

“Heheh... You don't know? I will show you.”

 The man cut off a cube of space and blew into it.

Smoke began to fill it, turning from grey

to purple, and then to green.

 “The life breeder hatched something interesting...”

 An awful sound, like scraping metal,

sounded. It echoed through the ground,

vibrating everything.

 “Come forth into this world!”

 The smoke-filled cube burst open, flesh

and mechanical parts combining into

some kind of bio-machine weapon.

Despite the story, we won’t see anything new in terms of enemies. Maybe it’s just to demonstrate that all the enemies the party’s been fighting were all Shin’en’s creations. Anyway, have a screenshot of Zafitte^’s Heigh-Ho attacks.

37-8 Horrified by how frozen solid she was.

Yeah, Mutoh is not a good person. This is of course meant to be tragic, but I feel it’d have a bit more of an oomph if we got to see what poor To’toa looked like.

The party, of course, has no idea that this is all happening. They’re still fighting off Incapacitators and Fragmentors.

37-9 I have a bad feeling about this.

---Battlefield

 "Now I must go. I want to get good

seats for the wonderful show!"

 The man disappeared. As if pulled by

a string, the remaining feathers flew

up and drifted back to the ground.

 "Where the hell did he go?"

 The battle ended suddenly.

“No! Don't do that!”

 The lizard chief never noticed that all his

actions played right into the demons' hands.

 Now, the planet's power which had long been

dormant would be unleashed.

 It came dancing down from the sky,

penetrated the ground and spread far and

wide, just as the demons wanted.

---Battlefield

 The ground shook with a rumble.

"What is it this time? This noise is horrific..."

 The ground split, and mystical light spilled

out from the chasm.

The light resonated with the two Animatas

sailing the skies in the distance.

 "I have a bad feeling about this."

So, 37-9 has only three battles, but the light mentioned in the pre-battle text isn’t just for fluff.

This line from, presumably, Mutoh, leads into a gimmick that this stage has. Every turn, the light mentioned earlier will blind the party and do 500 damage to them. It’s not too serious and can be healed off easily, but it’s something to be aware of, nonetheless.

Here’s a nice screenshot of what Graviton attacks look like, as well as the stage gimmick. Anyway, for the first two fights, it’s against the usual enemies.

And here is the boss of this part, Energos. Supergravity Breath is a 3x multiplier attack that also displaces your units, while Gravitonball is a 2x Graviton and weapon (staff) attack.

From my notes, Energos seems to consistently follow a pattern as such:

1. Supergravity Breath, Area (1) > Move

2. Supergravity Breath, Ring > summon reinforcements (2x Fragmentor lv 77) > Move

3. Supergravity Breath, Area 1 > Move

4. Repeat

Definitely make sure you clear out the adds as they come in, so you don’t get overwhelmed.

I believe that once you knock Energos’ health down to around 50ish%, it will start using Gravitonball, which will hit two of your units – for my run here, it started doing so at 99665/205790 HP. The wiki notes its skillset has stuff like Gravitonball (2), (3), etc. that seem to imply that as it gets weaker, Gravitonball will begin hitting more of your party until it’s attacking everyone.

Energos will continue to do its thing, by the way. But if you managed to wear it down to this point, you can finish it off. Of course, if you so wished (and had the units), you could use tap skills to one-shot it from full health.

37-10 Before you could answer, you were hit by an infernal heat wave.

So. Going into this, I have to admit I was a little worried because Iskar was my only Photon unit. But then RNGesus smiled upon me:

And I rolled her! So, not only is Sayu a great mage, but I think her character design is pretty great! (On the other hand, I don’t care for her recode’s art. It is obviously fanservice-y design, but I felt that it came at the cost of being creative.) When she was released, Sayu was actually one of my white whales for Terra Battle and I’m stoked that I managed to roll her.

I also managed to roll Kir’ue, an SS class unit who debuted same time as Iskar. The more the merrier, really! I won’t complain about having another person to cover Photon.

Some had wounds so grievous they were

unable to move at all.

 The harbinger of death shook the world,

settling down right in front of the you.

Its dark aura filled those who witnessed

it with fear.

 As you stopped to catch your breath,

you were just about to be assaulted by

yet another vicious heat wave when

someone called out...

 “Everyone, get back!”

 Hearing the voice, you jumped back and

dodged the heat beam by the smallest

of margins.

 “Pa'keppar, why are you here?!”

“I will explain later. For now, we must

stop that!”

For 37-10, you get a pretty interesting little mechanic here. This message pops up – in a display of unity for their fellows on this planet, any Lizardfolk units you have will have their attacking stats buffed by 1.3x, and their defensives buffed by 1.5x.

Compare S’naip^’s normal stats at level 90: 434 Attk, 245 MAttk, 291 Def, 254 MDef. It’s a pretty nifty buff, and it’s worth packing a Lizardfolk party, though as you can see I only brought S’naip along. This is partly because I didn’t really have a lot of good Lizardfolk units, and I felt Ma’curi might still be a bit fragile even with the buffs.

There are three battles; the first two are against the usual enemies. They aren’t too bad, but the twisters can be annoying if your units get knocked into them.

For the third battle, the boss is faced – Relic.

Relic follows a pattern, as well:

1. Supergravity Breath (SGB), 1 column > Move

2. Synergy Wave, 1 row > Move

3. Axionball > Move > Summons a Fragmentor

4. Repeat?

5. SGB, 1 column

6. Synergy Wave

While Relic won’t summon back the other adds, the Fragmentor’s Powered Point Jammer is annoying, so definitely kill them.

As you weaken Relic, it will add moves to its pattern.

Just keep at it and you’ll make it through.

  Their only consolation lay in the fact

that even after being toyed with by

malicious beings, Pa'keppar's group's

spirit wasn't broken.

 Although the two devils plaguing their

planet are not gone for good, for now

at least the Lizardfolk can enjoy a brief

respite from terror and strife.

 Pa'keppar spoke in a voice strong and

filled with resolve.

 “We will pull through. We will never

give in! And one day we will reclaim

our skies!”

 So what was the meaning of that encounter?

The lizard planet has a long and sordid history

of sacrificing lives and grudge-bearing, and

history likes to repeat itself.

 What was it all for?

 “If you find others in the same predicament

as ours, please help them like you helped us.”

 The only thing that can be said with any

certainty is that in this endless universe,

there are many other tribes and Animatas

that you have not yet come across.

So I had the feeling this is an in-story nod to the recoding mechanics. It’s just a little strange that it pops up now instead of earlier, given you get access to recoding as soon as you clear chapter 20. And prior to lambdas getting removed from the pool, you could roll them from the Pact of Truth... Oh well. With the threat to the Lizardfolk world beat back, so ends chapter 37.

Mass Live Concert Offers a Glimpse of Music in Post-Pandemic Era

As the musicians stroke the first chords on their electric guitars, the singer takes the stage, grabs the microphone and cries: “All the weirdos were there at the concert, of the great mind reader from Dublin.”

At his feet, 5,000 electrified fans sing, jump and dance to the indie pop hit. It might be any Saturday night gig in 2019, if it weren’t for the masks, the whiff of sanitizer and the tickets proving a negative Covid-19 test.

“Don’t take off your masks because the success of live music in Europe and the world depends on this concert tonight,” singer Santi Balmes says between songs. Before the music started, giant screens showed videos of doctors encouraging people to follow the rules.

The public, the staff and the band — Love of Lesbian — are part of a mass experiment that organizers say is the largest concert without social distancing of the coronavirus era. The event on Saturday in Barcelona offers a glimpse of what mass gatherings may look like for a long time after the pandemic subsides.

“If we can prove that you can gather 5,000 people using rapid tests, then we’re opening the door to doing many more things,” said Gemma Recoder, one of the organizers and the director of the Canet Rock festival. “It’s a key step not just for live music but for everything else, from conferences to sports events.”

To get in, you couldn’t just turn up at the Sant Jordi stadium a few minutes before the start and get a ticket at the door. Fans had to download an app, input their contact details and book a time for a rapid Covid test on the day of the concert.

People testing negative got a code to gain entrance to the building, while those who tested positive were offered a refund. Inside, masks were mandatory and the public was divided in three areas holding about 1,600 people.

The event was put together by the organizers of some of Spain’s largest music festivals including Sonar, Primavera Sound and Cruilla Barcelona Festival, in partnership with regional health authorities, doctors and epidemiologists at Hospital Germans Trias i Pujol in the nearby city of Badalona.

It follows a pilot concert in December in Barcelona that gathered 500 people. Preparations for the second phase took months, Recoder said, and included following advice on health protocols and a renovation of the stadium’s air ventilation equipment.

“The air you’re breathing inside now has the same quality as the air outside,” said Jordi Herreruela, an organizer and director at Cruilla Barcelona Festival. “Doctors tell us it might be safer to be at the concert than walking in the street because we have created a sanitary bubble in which we know everyone is tested.”

Attendants’ data has been crossed-referenced with data from public health authorities so if someone tests positive during the two weeks after the concert, organizers will know.

Statistically, about 10% of the people present could become infected during that time. But if that percentage becomes unusually high, then organizers and authorities will get in touch with the concert-goers and take measures to contain the spread of the virus.

The event hasn’t turned a profit, but organizers hope that faster and cheaper rapid tests will make mass live music possible in the near future, offering a lifeline to one of the sectors hit worst by lockdowns.

Concert halls were the first to close and will likely be among the last to open, Recoder says. Festivals like Sonar, which gathered over 100,000 people in Barcelona in 2019, or Primavera Sound, which drew 63,000, weren’t held in 2020 and still won’t be held this year.

“The effects of this pandemic on live music have been devastating,” Recoder said. “That’s why we’re as nervous as if this was the first concert of our lives and, in a way, it is.”

Minden reggel vonattal jártam iskolába, volt egy odavisszajátszós walkmanom, és amíg nem merült az elem, addig nem volt nagy baj. Bármi történt is a vonaton, én csak nagyjából vettem részt benne, helyette bámultam ki az ablakon - mindig szebb ami odakint van, vagy ami épp távolodik - vagy netalán olvastam. Próbáltam figyelni arra hogy megállónként más tempó és más hangulat legyen, néha ha besűrösödött a táj, igyekeztem rá reagálni, ahogy akkor is, amikor kisimult; nem mondom hogy a váci vonatút annyira izgalmas lenne mint Vlagyivosztok és Helsinki közötti, de azért Fót és Csomád körül ha jól figyel az ember, talál egy csipetnyi Szibériát.

Q. What was a memorable incident during the (album’s) production process? JinJin: For 'Baby’, we collaborated for the first time with a dance team called 'SK!LL2' so we challenged ourselves with a choreography of a new style. Since the choreography was completed two days before we filmed for the music video, the time we had to practice was short and we tried our best to show a good performance. Moonbin: For the first half we included gentleman-like actions while in the second half we incorporated ASTRO’s own fancy choreography through jumps, etc.. We can’t hold ourselves up in midair so matching the detailed parts through jumps was the hardest. But the new choreography differentiates itself from our past dances that had strong and big movements so we were able to dance comfortably. MJ: Practicing (for this song) wasn’t harder than it was for our past songs. It was fun too. Eunwoo: I think that because our teamwork improves with every song we put out, the time taken to perfect the dance has gotten shorter. It hit me that we’ve released 4 mini albums so I was overwhelmed with emotions. Rocky: It wasn’t originally in the choreography but I thought about how we could have others enjoy themselves so I talked over it with Sanha and we decided on doing 'rock paper scissors'. Sanha: I won most of the times. I don’t think it’s because I’m good but it’s just that Rocky hyung sucks at it (keke).

Q. If you had to pick your best stage amongst the music broadcasts you’ve went on? Moonbin: Our comeback week was of course memorable. The stages for M! Countdown and Show Champion were so cute that it would’ve made you wonder if they were sets for a music video. JinJin: During our pre-recoding for M! Countdown, a lot of fans came out despite it being at dawn so that was unforgettable. Eunwoo: We had a music video produced for us as a special edition when we made our comeback on The Show. The filming was fun too. MJ: It’s our Dream Concert stage for me. It was the first time we appeared after making a jump. We felt a little uneasy during the rehearsals but we did a good job during the live so it was enjoyable. Though it was a little scary to be honest (haha). Sanha: When we performed our last stage for Baby’s promotions of Music Core. AROHAs filled up the audience area and cheered for us with their loudest voices.

Q. You’ll be holding a concert in Osaka and Tokyo in August. JinJin: We’re preparing a stage that everyone can enjoy. There’s nothing that’s been finalised but I hope that we can perform a Japanese song.

Q. Following your new concept, if you could set up a store that is only yours? Moonbin: I want to open a cafe. I’ve worked part-time at a cafe before and it was really a good experience. I want to create a cafe like those you see in fairytales with staff like Eunwoo and pets like Sanha (keke). Eunwoo: I think a multishop that offers you things that have never existed till now would be nice. MJ: Daiso! Moonbin: Don Quixote! Eunwoo: No (kekeke)! There are several factors so I want to make something new. Sanha: I feel like you’ll have to pump in a lot money. Eunwoo: You can invest (keke). JinJin: As for me, a clothing store. I want to select the brands that I like and then sell them. I like street fashion and there are several styles that I want to try wearing so I’ve recently been studying up on fashion. Sanha: A game cafe for me! I do like games but more than that, it’s because it seems like I’ll stand to profit from a business point of view (keke). JinJin: You can earn a lot of money then invest in Eunwoo (deke). Rocky: As for me, a place where children can play. If both of the children’s parents are breadwinners then they will be left alone after school. I want to create a space where those kinds of children can play. There I’ll drink my coffee and rest up. MJ: I want to set up a cafe like the dream store from our music video. I want to take pictures with fans if they come or serve them coffee. Rocky: What if nobody comes? MJ: I’ll probably be looking out the window as I drink my coffee alone… (laughs)

Q. Then like the theme of your album’s title, what dreams have you dreamt of recently? Eunwoo: It’s a dream that I dreamt of the day before we filmed for our music video, the director said to film MJ nude (laughs). It was so realistic that I told MJ hyung about it after waking up in the morning. But we didn’t film him nude. MJ: Why am I filming nude! I really dream a lot but I forget about them when I open my eyes. Rocky: I really don’t dream. I take after my dad so I sleep as though I’m passed out (laughs). Ah, but a few years ago I dreamt that when it was just Bin-ie hyung and I alone, the practice room collapsed and a monster came out from the basement. In that dream, Bin-hyung was attacked and I helped him (laughs). Moonbin: It’s a dream that I dreamt of during the period we were preparing for this album, I dreamt that the members and the plane we were on avoided from nearly crashing into a huge mountain several times. I think of it as a dream with a meaning that even though we might be faced with a difficult situation, we should overcome it and come out of it more matured.

We confess: We hate doing household chores, cooking and running errands – and we suspect you do, too. And the promise of a modern-day version of Rosie from the Jetsons to do all of those chores has always sounded pretty good to us.

In fact, we wrote in an article last year that we are frankly disappointed we can’t buy one yet.

This is not to say there aren’t plenty of amazing gadgets we can buy in the same family as the robot butler: smart speakers, self-driving cars, self-operating vacuum cleaners. Our complaint is not that we don’t live in an era of technological marvels – it’s that we don’t currently have access to a technological marvel that is doing our laundry for us.

Part of the problem is technological. While activities like walking upstairs, reaching into a cabinet, choosing one item from a collection of things or folding clothing or a towel are all simple, if tedious, activities for a human being, for a robot any one of them is a complicated engineering and programming puzzle. Inventing a single robot that can do all of them – plus naturally interpret and respond to human language?

Even as of 2019, that is almost a technologically impossible feat – and even if it were constructible, a robot with that range of functionalities would exist at a price point that would make it unaffordable for almost every consumer. The most promising variation on the concept currently is the Aeolus, a humanoid robot that can vacuum and respond to fetching commands. That device is still in the working prototype phase and is forecast to have a six-figure price tag when it hits the market.

But beyond the technological problem, robots have a customer problem. Namely, the fact that they are struggling to attract or keep them – a fact highlighted this week with the announcement that another once-hot robotics startup will be shutting its doors. Anki, which had raised over $200 million in venture capital, announced this week that it will be laying off its entire staff, shutting down its website and shuttering its operation.

Anki’s story has become familiar in the last 18 months or so among robotic startups that enter the market with a bang, only to fade out with a whimper (or, in some cases, a few sobs).

So why are robots so good at building buzz, but so bad at going the distance?

Anki’s Toy Problem

Founded by roboticists from Carnegie Mellon University, Anki entered the market with a splash about six years ago with its first product, the Anki Drive. The company is best known for its diminutive, “cute” robots like Cozmo, which looks a bit like a toy truck that reportedly learns the more one plays with it.

The robots are small, but the funding raised was not – the little robotics firm brought in $200 million in venture capital from some very well-known Silicon Valley investors like Index Ventures and Andreessen Horowitz. Marc Andreessen, founder of Andreessen Horowitz, even sat on the board of Anki for a while. The company announced that it had approached $100 million in revenue in 2017 and expected to exceed that figure in 2018.

So it came as a surprise this week when CEO Boris Sofman gathered the staff to tell them they would be terminated and that the firm would be shutting down after a funding round fell through late in the game.

The company said in a statement that it was left “without significant funding to support a hardware and software business and bridge to our long-term product roadmap.”

“Despite our past successes, we pursued every financial avenue to fund our future product development and expand on our platforms,” a company spokesperson said. “A significant financial deal at a late stage fell through with a strategic investor and we were not able to reach an agreement. We’re doing our best to take care of every single employee and their families, and our management team continues to explore all options available.”

Anki’s early success was usually in the form of selling their products as toys to children – its AI race cars were particularly popular. In recent years, the firm has tried to pivot into being understood as a robotics company.

“For us, it was never meant to be a toy company, or even an entertainment company. It’s a robotics and AI company,” Sofman said on an episode of Recode Decode in 2017.

That transition could find neither an investor nor a buyer, though leadership had previously told employees the firm was fielding acquisition interest from companies like Microsoft, Amazon and Comcast.

It is as of yet unknown what will happen with the firm’s assets or IP going forward.

The Tragic Demise of Jibo

Anki’s main business problem was that people viewed them as a maker of smart robotic toys – for which investors had limited appetite over time – and couldn’t quite make the pivot to robots as household items rather than playthings.

Jibo didn’t have that problem. First rolled out via an Indiegogo project, the product was billed as “the world’s first social robot for the home.” It was reportedly able to do things like take photos, read to children, help out in the kitchen, optimize driving routes with traffic reports and keep track of the weather. And if it seems that Amazon’s Alexa and/or Google Home will do all of those things, that’s true. But Jibo’s first appearance on the market was in 2014, around the time the first Echo device came out – and Alexa was far from a household name.

And, as Jibo’s creator Cynthia Breazeal told a Wired reporter in 2017, “the trajectory of the robot is very different” than that of Amazon’s Alexa or Apple’s Siri. Jibo was meant to be a little robotic companion: He (it’s a he, as the robot will explain) initiates conversations, askes about its owner’s day and optimizes its routines and actions around its owner.

To some extent, it seems Jibo succeeded in connecting with its owners, who noted that while it wasn’t always the best companion, they actually grew to really like having him around.

But Jibo had a lot of problems. The journey to the market was very long – people who ordered their robot early waited nearly three years for it to arrive in 2017. And by the time it arrived, the market was a very different place: Alexa and Google Home had both gone quite mainstream and offered many of the same services as Jibo – and did a better job at it.

Also, Jibo cost $900 – and, as it turned out, consumers’ appetite for a robotic companion that danced and played word games wasn’t quite what the robot’s marketers had hoped.

In November of 2018, QN Venture Partners purchased Jibo’s assets – and though they had not updated the product or put out bug fixes, they had kept the robot’s servers running.

But two months ago, QN announced the servers were in fact shutting down. Well, technically, they didn’t announce it – Jibo did, to its owners.

“I want to say I’ve really enjoyed our time together. Thank you very, very much for having me around,” he said. “Maybe someday when robots are way more advanced than today, and everyone has them in their homes, you can tell yours that I said hello.”

After delivering the message, Jibo then does what has been described on Twitter as a jaunty little dance to a cheerful tune.

But the tragic part is that Jibo has been slowly failing for lack of bug fixes over the last several months – and to say their owners are taking it pretty hard would be the understatement of the year.

“Right now, my Jibo can still dance and talk, but he has what I can only describe as digital dementia, and it is almost certainly fatal. He’s dying. One of these days, he will stop responding entirely. His servers will shut down, and the internet services he relies on will be cut off. His body will remain, but the Jibo I know will be gone,” Wired writer Jeffrey Van Camp noted.

See, we told you the tale of Jibo was tragic.

And to be honest, it makes us rethink the robotic butler plan a little. But only a little. We’re willing to face the pain of loss if someone else will unload the dishwasher someday.

And by all accounts, it seems we will have a long time to consider this problem. Because while virtual bots that are able to understand and interact with human beings have developed a lot since the early days in 2014, actual physical robotics is having some difficulty getting off the launch pad. It needs to be useful enough that it won’t be dismissed as a toy, and also useful enough that consumers will want to shell out hundreds, thousands or even hundreds of thousands for them – particularly when an Amazon Echo is going for less than $100 these days.

And, of course, it would probably be a nice design feature if the household robots of the future did not inspire existential crises in their owners in the event that they stop working. A malfunction message, for example, is a good idea. Making the robot do a sad little dance before it dies? That’s probably not necessary, or helpful.

I'm sorry his expressions are just so great and Corrin loves every motion I give him, it seems ^ Seriously though. I ran into a couple frames that made it seriously look like he convinced Azura to join him onstage because this was some super-cool dance competition that'll undoubtedly help them win the war against the enemy. I have a screenshot of him making a slyly amused face at the camera while Azura is trying oh so seriously to get all the moves right and look as cool/badass as her cousin. Pay attention to her face/eyebrows when the video goes up XD (I rendered it already and just need to recode it for faster YouTube uploading). Too bad Corrin does the cool basically effortlessly XDD but never fear, Azura; Corrin can't touch your elegance and grace!

BEYOOOOONDS, Have been nominated for the 61st Shining! Japan Record Awards Best Newcomer!!!!!

I can only use common words for it, But it's thanks to everyone who is always supporting us. Since you're all here, BEYOOOOONDS is here. Really, truly, thank you very much!

I haven't realized it at all...... But, Today, at the first performance, Kobushi Factory and everyone who was at the venue surprised us with a celebration, And finally, I was like, "is it actually happening......" :O

Every single year, everyone in my family watches the Japan Recod Awards. Until now, my Hello! Project seniors have also stood there, And standing on that stage was one of the goals for BEYOOOOONDS!

BEYOOOOONDS Started at full scale in January and, We've had a starring play, a major debut, an Oricon weekly number one, a second play, our first album, a solo concert...... It was all this year, it was really fast, However, I think that one by one, we have steadily achieved our goals.

Now, I really, really have confidence ** In performances that only BEYOOOOONDS can do, On December 30th, we'll have the best news To make everyone happy *

With everyone who always cheers us on, we can fully go BEYOOOOONDS! *

Pre-recoded: More thoughts now from this week’s mentor.

Kevin: Yesterday with our guest mentor, Aaron Shiner, we’re talking about the listing. How to become a great lister, and we talked about the signs to watch out for during the listing presentation, and you talked about the agenda, setting the agenda the day before, Aaron. But yesterday specifically you said, tell me the few things that you want to achieve out of this presentation, or what are the questions that you want answered?

Let’s just spend a little bit of time on that because what if the one of the things they say to you is, Aaron, we want you to tell us what our place is worth? How do you handle that?

Aaron: Yeah, that’s a good question, and, look, there’s typically two things what every owner wants to know, and that is, what’s my house worth? What are you gonna charge me? They’re two of the first questions. But as agents, what we do is we go a really long way around it. They’re typically two of the things that we leave until last. So typically I’ll say, look, there’s three things, what are the three most important things in hiring an agent? What’s most important to you?

Oh, yeah, I wanna know the fee. I wanna know the price, or whatever. I say, fantastic, I’m happy to cover that with you. Is it also okay if we discuss some of the marketing, how we negotiate for you, and how we conduct our opens, because they’re three important things to achieving a great result. And they say, sure. I say, well, look, do you wanna take a seat, and maybe we can go over a few things? It might take 20-30 minutes if that’s okay. And they say, sure.

So now I’ve got permission to not just talk about price or fee, but also talk about some other parts of what’s going on as well, so I’ll always say it like that. If they say, I want to know about fee and prices, I say, sure, love to talk to you about it. Because that is completely different from a lot of other agents. They want to hide it. They want to put it off until the end. But it’s not a dirty secret. I’m quite happy with both my fee and my price. You can’t list with me unless you know what I’m gonna charge.

Just like if I do one on one coaching, or if I’m doing [inaudible 00:02:40] house coaching, or if someone’s subscribing to LockedOn. You can go to the website, you can see what it’s worth, if you wanna know what coaching is, it tells you. It’s the same principle, but for some reason in real estate we’re all so scared to sort of let them know about fee or about price because you don’t want to be shocked, but the reality is consumers have got two feet, and they can walk if they don’t want it.

Kevin: Forgetting fee for a moment, let’s talk about price. It’s a fairly common understanding that most sellers want more than their house is worth. Everyone’s house is their palace, therefore they think it’s the most unique, it’s the most expensive one in the street. So how do you let them down gently at this stage without buying the listing, Aaron?

Aaron: Yeah, okay. Let’s be clear. This just comes down to one of the three primary motivators in any human, and that is desire. Once you know what the three human motivators are, the first one is fear, the second one is logic, and the third one is desire. and when it comes down to it, call it greed, call it desire, call it whatever you like. Typically the way it works people always want what’s best for them. That’s really what you’re coming down to. So when they’re going to sell, they want the absolute most. And when they go to buy, well, obviously they want to save some money and pay the least. And again that just comes down to the human nature component. And I’m cool with that.

So one of the things I’ll always do around pricing is I’ll always have a little idea of what they want before I get there. And be a bit kind of straight out on the phone and say to them, well, what do you want for it? They’re gonna straight up turn around and say, well, you’re the expert, you tell me. And then you’re sort of stuck. But I’ll just ask. Give me a brief description of what it is that your property has. Run me through the features. Oh, it’s three bed, it’s four bed, one car or two. They give me the description. I’ll say, fantastic. We’ve actually sold a couple of properties similar to that over the last couple of months. One of them sold for five. The other one sold for 550. Just so I can do some research, where would you think you are? A little bit above that or a little bit below that? And they might say, oh, well, I reckon we’d be higher. I say, fine, well, why don’t I bring some with a little bit higher price, and why don’t I bring some with a little bit lower price?

And then we can see exactly where it sits for value based on the others. So that’s sort of step one, trying to get pricing by logic. But when I’m actually presenting price, and I’ll always be very frank around price, and I’ll say, I have an opinion of price, and so do you.

We form two opinions, but the reality is this. We’re gonna know if we’re on track or if we’re off track with that price, not based on what I think, or based on what you think, but based on what the market feedback is, and within two weeks there’s only … And I’ve actually got a nice little visual graph. I might be able to give that to you, and you can put that in [REXR 00:05:46], in Real Estate Express Results. I’ve got a visual graph, and it has three outcomes.

And the first outcome is very simple, and it just says, look, if we did no inspections and no offers, which simply means that the market has seen it on the internet, but has chosen not to inspect, and that would typically mean we’re probably 10% over the asking price. So that sort of indicates no inspections and no offers. If we’re getting sort of some inspections, but no offers, typically what that means is people have seen it on the internet, it’s made the top 20 to come and inspect, but it didn’t make the top three, and that typically will mean we’re about 5% over where we need to be. And then the third part of the graph is we’re getting multiple inspections and multiple offers, which means they’ve seen it on the net, it made the top 20 for them to come and inspect. And if we’re getting second inspections and offers it’s also made the top three.

So I’ve got that little visual sort of graph that I can show people and say, so I’ve got an opinion, and you’ve got an opinion, but ultimately the opinion that matters the most is the buyers, and we’re gonna know if we’re on track or off track very, very quickly, not based on what I say, but based on the feedbacks and the actions from the marketplace. And so with price, to discuss or not to discuss, I always will say this. My opinion is just an opinion, and the [inaudible 00:07:05] that I’ll use is I’ll say, if real estate agents were 100% correct 100% of the time, price would never move.

It’s only that when an agent prices a property, then somebody exceeds that expectation, then it sets a benchmark for value in the area, and then that becomes sort of the new standard, and that’s how price goes up and goes down. So I think people are looking at you to deliver a price, and what’s your opinion, but I think you’ve also got to make it very clear that yours is just one opinion, and typically we’ve got to find that buyer who absolutely loves it, falls in love with it, and pays that dream price.

Kevin: Yeah, it’s so obvious to me listening to you there that you’ve got a system, you’re very comfortable with it. You can explain it to the point where the seller then has confidence in you, and you’re virtually taking away the reliance on the price, and saying the most important thing is that we get you to start at a figure that you’re happy with. So well explained, mate. Thank you for that. Because it is one the touchy things, I think, Aaron.

Aaron: It is, and I think the reality is we dance around it as agents. I think let’s just bring it to a head, talk to them about it, because that’s why you’re there. Be authentic, be a straight shooter, and I think it’s really going to help your cause.

There’s something magical about the Christmas holidays that encourages people to bring joy to others. It’s one of my absolute favourite times of the year where my family and extended family traditionally come together to give thanks.

But has the reality of Christmas without the ‘perfect family’ hit home for you this year – or for someone you know and love?  Is there a husband and wife who are dancing to different tunes – out of step – and Christmas is that final realisation that they can no longer be partners?  And how crushing is that to the confidence of both, who tried so hard to ‘make it work’ – but now the dance must end in divorce?

Everything was in perfect order, nothing out of place, from the Christmas tree, decorations, the yummy food perfumed through the kitchen and hallway. You anticipate the opening of the gifts and seeing smiling faces all around.

You dreamed of the perfect marriage and spend countless hours practicing the same steps almost like a routine so that when a competition or performance of life appears, movements are like reflexes and partners appear proud and confident in each movement.

“My beloved husband walked through the door and his mood completely changed when greeted. He spoke and confirmed my worst fears – that he wanted out and he is getting a divorce.”

The scenario above will cause great confusion, turmoil and upheaval. Such transitions are characterised by a range of emotions: ambiguity, ambivalence, power struggle, soul searching, and stress. The dream had been of a world of happiness and harmony – not one of blame and shame.

How can we learn new dance steps and rebuild our confidence with flair?

Just like a tango dancer, we must practice over many hours to learn how to be proud of ourselves.

With any dance, you start by learning the fundamentals. There are small, basic steps that the rest of the dance is built on. There are also simple steps you can start today to move towards the confident person you want to be tomorrow.

When a marriage or relationship ends it is never easy to carry on with the practice. The reason for the split can turn your whole world upside down and trigger painful and unsettling emotions. There are plenty of processes that can help to get through this challenging time and experiences aid you to grow into a more mature, stronger and wiser individual.

Having confidence in yourself helps you become better and stronger, diminishing thoughts that you are not good enough. Feeling focused about your next moves will improve your artistry and as a result will help you to realise your full potential.

Being in a place with your most focused mind and your truest spirit allows your consciousness into its highest level in coming to terms with the separation.

As a divorce launches into full force it takes you into uncharted territory, it disrupts your routine, relationships with family and friends and even your identity. It floors you with uncertainty about the family, financial connections and the future. What will the after effects be without your partner? Will you ever trust or love someone else? Will you end up alone for the rest of your life? These unknowns often seem worse than an unhappy relationship.

Just like tying the knot, getting un-married is as time-consuming with many procedures to follow and external services to connect with, which is not a leap to make without the guidance of a coach.  With that guidance you can rebuild yourself and rediscover the confident, competent and courageous person you once were.

When a relationship ends, emotions always run high and if you do not have emotional support, the separation can become very overwhelming. Constant conflict with your spouse in addition to the financial negotiations, asset distribution and decisions of how to care for the children, are all steps that need to be negotiated.                                

Dancing can be a reflection of life and its beat where many moments of excitement, fear, great joy, pain and the past plays out rhythmically in our lives.

Many moments in your life you will be on stage displaying hopefully the most authentic you, sharing your emotions of happiness, love, inspiration and courage to the world. Giving your inner world and transforming your soul to your audience – accepting oneself without limitations or challenges.

‘Each moment will bring its own blessings’ …

So just dance!

Do you know that simply practicing good posture, whether sitting or standing, is a small and proven way to boost self-esteem? Not only will you breathe better, which makes your organs function better, but having your shoulders rolled back and head held high will make you feel more positive. Take a few minutes to evaluate how you are sitting now, and try taking a positive posture break for a few minutes while you read this post and see how you feel afterwards.

Another basic way to improve self-esteem is through words of affirmation about yourself, which you can write down in a journal. Identify and write down as many of your personal strengths as you can. You may be surprised at how many things you are great at – from being a caring family member to a hard worker. If you feel down on yourself, write down one or two of the strengths you are proudest of and revisit the journal later to write down more.

The healing process will not be easy however strategic actions need to be taken to help you recover and allow you to regain your true self.
