The first time Mike saw Harvey wearing glasses the sight was so arresting he very nearly forgot how to breathe.

He’d been having dinner with Jenny, and it had been so long since they’d seen each other they ended up staying until closing time. In fact, they didn’t even notice they were the last ones there, too busy laughing and catching up, and when they realized they left with a flurry of apologies and an extremely generous tip. Mike had walked Jenny home and left her with a warm hug and promise to catch up again soon before catching a cab back home.

He’d expected Harvey to be asleep. It had been a long day full of highly tense meetings, and the clock had struck two some time during his car ride home, so he didn’t expect to come home to light spilling into the hallway from their home office. He crept across the darkened apartment and found Harvey sitting at the desk, dressed in slightly rumpled pajamas and thick rimmed glasses, as he was scribbling something down onto a yellow legal pad. He was working intently, but there was a slight quirk at the corner of his mouth, and it was like Mike fell in love with him all over again.

“Wow,” he murmured, and Harvey looked up and smiled at him. “You look hot as fuck. How did I not know that you wear glasses?”

Harvey leaned back in his chair, laughing. “I know you know I wear contacts. You’ve seen me put them in and take them out a hundred times before.”

“Well yeah, but I’ve never seen those before. You should wear them all the time,” Mike replied, walking into the room. “It would totally unnerve opposing counsel. Who could possibly concentrate on their own case with you looking like that.”

Harvey grinned up at Mike, until Mike straddled Harvey’s legs and settled in Harvey’s lap, at which point Harvey leaned over and kissed him, slow and deep.

“So no old man jokes?” Harvey whispered against his lips.

Mike shook his head, diving back in for more. The movement caused the chair to rock precariously, and they both froze, grabbing onto the chair or each other as the chair righted itself. When they were safely on even footing they looked at each other for a moment before bursting out into laughter. Mike leaned down much slower the next time, pressing a simple and chaste kiss to Harvey’s lips.

“So,” Mike said, getting up off Harvey’s lap and turning towards the desk, “whatchya working on?”

“Nothing,” Harvey cried urgently, hustling to cover up the legal pad with a nearby book. At Mike’s raised eyebrow he admitted, “I may have been working on my vows.”

A slow smile stretched across Mike’s face. “At two in the morning?”

“What can I say,” Harvey shrugged. “I was inspired.”

“Okay. Well, come to bed. Those glasses have inspired me. If you know what I mean.” He added an exaggerated wink for good measure, causing Harvey to chuckle and mutter idiot under his breath. But he still stood and followed Mike to their bedroom, smiling the whole way.

Despite Mike’s many attempts, he couldn’t convince Harvey to wear the glasses on their wedding day.

It wasn’t that Harvey was old, it was that he was old school.

Yes, he had ten years on Mike, but most of the time Mike forgot about that, they were so in sync, so well suited to each other that it was never an issue. And whenever he did something that was slightly out of touch - like listen to records instead of a digital music player, or hand write his vows instead of typing his drafts on a laptop - he didn’t do those things because he was old, he did them because he preferred to.

Which was why it was so shocking to Mike when, after boarding the plane for their honeymoon and settling in their seats, Harvey pulled out a kindle.

Mike was the more voracious reader of the two, but Harvey still enjoyed a good book. There had been several times where they’d spent a lazy Sunday afternoon curled up on the couch reading their own books, or late nights where Harvey would fall asleep with a book on his chest. In fact, Harvey had bought a book not twenty minutes ago at one of the airport’s shops. He loved the feel of books, their smells and textures. Which made the kindle all the more surprising.

“Um … since when do you have a kindle?” Mike asked.

“Since it arrived two days ago.”

“But you love your books.”

Harvey chuckled. “Mike, we’re going on a honeymoon for fifteen weeks, nearly half of which is made up of secluded resorts. That’s a lot of reading time. No way am I lugging around four months worth of books. This was just easier.”

They were married five months ago but were only just now leaving for their honeymoon. Turns out it’s easier to get nearly four months off work than just one, because you can allocate whole cases to other people, rather than starting them and handing them off to someone else partway through. Delaying their vacation for a few months seemed like a small price to pay to be able to travel on an extended honeymoon. Still, they’d known each other for three years before getting together, were together eighteen months before their wedding, and have been married for five months. And yet, after nearly five years, Harvey still managed to surprise him.

And he wouldn’t have it any other way.

Mike was an ipad man himself, but the kindle was still slightly old school in that it was for books and nothing else. And it was worth every penny for the night that Mike walked into the bathroom to find Harvey in the bath, his glasses clad face illuminated by the light of the kindle in the otherwise darkened room. It was a sight so beautiful that Mike couldn’t help but pull his cellphone from his pocket and snap a quick picture.

Mike had started planning their honeymoon even before their wedding. There was a whole wide world out there that he’d never been a part of, and he couldn’t wait to experience it for the first time with the person he loved most out of its seven billion inhabitants.

He started populating their trip with places he’d grown up wanting to see. Machu Pichu in Peru. The Sydney Opera House and Bridge in Australia. The Great Wall in China. The Parthenon in Greece. There were so many adventures out there waiting for them, and though Harvey wasn’t quite as enthused about all the sightseeing Mike wanted to do he still went along with it. He just added a few other stops along the way, places they could relax a bit. Mike didn’t mind, not when those additions were places like St Lucia, Bora Bora, and Thailand.

Every time they landed in a new country Mike felt the urge to start singing I can show you the world… He never did though, not only because he can’t carry a tune to save his life, but because in actuality it’s Harvey showing him the world, not the other way around. And it wasn’t just because of the money - though Mike certainly wasn’t complaining about the first class everything - but because he never would’ve gone to half these places alone. There was always something more pressing to worry about - Grammy, Trevor, where his next rent check was coming from - and he never could’ve conceived of leaving New York for four months at a time.

And there was something about travelling with someone else, the way you could see the world through their eyes, that made it all the more special. And Harvey’s eyes, bespectacled as they occasionally were, were beautiful.

Mike might’ve been able to resist singing Aladdin songs at each airport, but he couldn’t stop himself from singing something from Mulan when they walked along the Great Wall. He’d started with Let’s get down to business, and was shocked in the best way when Harvey immediately joined in with To defeat the huns. They laughed for five minutes as they sang the entire song, and their tour guide just smiled along and took a video of them singing horribly off key.

Greece was their last stop, and Harvey had rented an impossibly opulent house for them to stay in for the duration.

The first thing they did after unpacking was christen their bedroom. It was their honeymoon after all. Afterwards Harvey ran buck naked through the house and jumped into the inground pool. Mike, following along and laughing the whole time, simply lounged on one of the chaises. He was naked too, but they had total privacy, and the sunshine felt amazing on his exposed skin.

His eyes were closed, face turned upwards to the sun, when he felt a splash of water on his legs. Mike opened his eyes to see Harvey peering over the pools edge, smiling widely. “Come in, Mike. The water’s fine.”

Mike sat up, but took a moment before joining Harvey in the pool. He knew they were quite literally in the honeymoon phase, but he couldn’t believe there would ever come a time where Harvey wouldn’t take his breath away. And he looked particularly beautiful like this. His hair was slightly longer than normal and was lighter in tone, bleached from the constant exposure to the sun. His facial hair had grown from slight stubble to a thick beard. And best of all was the white gold ring, ever present since the moment Mike slid it onto his finger.

“What?” Harvey said, confused by Mike’s continued stare.

“You’re really beautiful, you know that?”

Harvey just smiled indulgently and said, “Get in here.”

So Mike did, sliding into the pool. The water was perfect and he dove beneath the surface, swimming in Harvey’s direction. He resurfaced in front of his husband, sliding his arms and legs around him. Harvey’s arms were immediately supporting him.

“I wish we didn’t have to go back home. I mean, I know we’re here for another ten days, but I’m not ready to go back. I wish we could keep going, just a little longer.”

“Is that so?” Harvey replied, a mischievous grin lighting his face. Mike knew that smile all too well. He was up to something.

“What is it?” Mike asked.

Harvey’s grin only widened. “It was supposed to be a surprise, but I suppose now’s as good a time as any to tell you.”

“Tell me what?”

“Well, I thought you might feel that way, so I had Donna book us another week before we go home.”

“Are you serious?” Mike gasped. At Harvey’s nod he continued with, “Where? Here?”

“Nope. It’s a surprise.”

“Tell me,” Mike demanded, squeezing his arms and legs, tightening his hold on Harvey.

Harvey tilted his chin and said, “Make me.”

So Mike did, in the most creative way he knew how.

“I can’t believe you didn’t have the City of Lights on your original list of places to see.”

“Paris is the City of Love.”

“No it isn’t.

“Well it will be by the time we’re through with it.”

After spending some time on the top level of the Eiffel Tower - Mike unable to resist making a one day none of this will be ours joke - they had a picnic lunch on the Champ de Mars. It’s late for lunch, and though the garden was much less crowded than it was when they were looking down on it from the top of the tower, there were still families and couples and groups of tourists lounging about and taking photos.

They found a relatively empty space and set up camp. It was a simple meal - breads and cheeses and fruit, when in Paris and all that - and though they’d thought about bringing along some wine it’s a warm day and have decided to stick to water.

The food was delicious and they chatted amiably as they ate. They’re halfway through their week here, and even though Mike would love nothing more than to just keep travelling forever with Harvey by his side, he knew they really needed to get back to their real lives soon. And that’s okay, because his real life was doing a job he loved alongside the man he loved. And who could ask for more than that?

Once they finished eating they decided to stick around for a bit, just to enjoy the ambiance. Harvey pulled his kindle from their bag and laid down on the soft grass. Mike made himself comfortable, lying at a right angle, his head on Harvey’s thigh, content to just people watch for a bit. Harvey ran a hand through Mike’s hair distractedly, and Mike couldn’t help but think that this happiness was a blessing he wanted to spend a lifetime deserving.

A young couple set up a picnic just near them. They had a young daughter, maybe four years old, who bounced excitedly around them, her dark curls light on the breeze. He watched them for a moment, a feeling of longing like he’d never felt seizing his chest.

He couldn’t get it out of his head, even an hour later as they were packing up to head back to the hotel in order to change before their night out in Montmartre. Harvey noticed Mike’s distraction, of course he did, and he reached out to run a hand down Mike’s forearm, asking, “Everything okay?”

This probably wasn’t the time or place to talk about this, but Harvey was his husband, his best friend, and he didn’t want to keep anything from him. “We've never really talked about this before, but … do you ever think about having kids? With me? One day?”

Harvey didn’t ask where this was coming from, or try to put the conversation off. He just smiled softly, murmuring, “Of course I do.”

It was like a great weight lifted itself from Mike’s chest, and he could breathe again. “Yeah?” he replied wondrously.

“Yeah. But … is it wrong that I want to keep you to myself for a little bit longer first?”

Mike couldn’t help but chuckle at that, leaning over and pressing a quick kiss to Harvey’s lips. “I could hardly complain about such a sentiment, could I? But ... not to sound like every cliché you’ve ever heard ... we aren’t getting any younger.”

“Worried about your child bearing hips? The ticking of your biological clock getting too loud?” Harvey joked.

Mike just rolled his eyes. ��No, but I’d still like to be young enough to actually have the energy for it.”

“Was that a subtle dig at my age, Mr Specter-Ross? Knew the old man jokes would come out sooner or later.”

“Well you certainly look the part,” Mike agreed with a smile, nudging Harvey’s glasses. He hadn’t worn his contacts in weeks, and Mike fucking loved it. He kinda hoped Harvey would keep with the glasses when they got back home.

Harvey playfully shoved Mike, and when Mike shoved back Harvey retaliated by pulling Mike in for a kiss. “Let’s talk about it when we get home, okay?” he said against Mike’s lips.

Mike nodded. “Okay.”

“Come on,” Harvey said, standing up and offering a hand to Mike.

“I’m not the old one, remember,” Mike said, grinning, but he still put his hand in Harvey’s and let him pull him up.

“Idiot,” Harvey murmured good naturedly.

“Love you too.”

Seven months later they made the call to an adoption agency.

And yes, Harvey did start wearing the glasses to work. Unfortunately, much to Mike’s disappointment, he lost the beard.
