Sirius let out a frustrated sigh and leaned back in his chair. “I’m trying to tell you that my brother—Regulus, in case you’ve forgotten—is a bad influence. You don’t know him like I do. He’s—he’s manipulative, cunning, and a perfect little Slytherin poster boy.”

James hummed noncommittally, his wand still twirling, his gaze fixed on the figure pacing near the edge of the lake. Even from this distance, Regulus Black was unmistakable. His sharp features, his careful, deliberate movements—it was like he drew the moonlight to himself.

“Honestly, Prongs, I’m starting to think you’ve been Confunded,” Sirius snapped, leaning forward again. “He’s just—ugh, I don’t even know what he’s doing to you. But whatever it is, it’s not good. Regulus doesn’t do things without some twisted agenda.”

James didn’t respond.

“James!” Sirius barked, this time slapping the arm of the couch.

That got James’s attention—barely. He turned to Sirius, looking faintly annoyed. “Padfoot, can you keep it down?”

“Keep it down? Keep it—” Sirius’s voice rose incredulously before he forced it back into a hiss. “You’re sitting here mooning over my snake of a brother while I’m trying to save you from—”

“From what, Sirius?” James interrupted, finally meeting his friend’s eyes. His voice wasn’t angry, just... distant. “From someone who’s been kinder to me in the past month than half the people in this castle?”

“Kind?” Sirius repeated, his voice dripping with disbelief. “Kind, James? That’s what we’re calling it now?”

James sighed and stood, brushing invisible dust off his robes. He crossed to the window, resting a hand on the cool glass. Outside, Regulus paused his pacing, his head tilting slightly as if he could sense James watching him.

“He’s not who you think he is,” Sirius said, softer now but no less firm. “You don’t know him like I do. He’ll hurt you, James. It’s what he does.”

James didn’t answer. His focus was entirely on Regulus, who had turned fully now, his pale face illuminated by the moonlight. For a moment, it looked like he was staring right back at James.

Sirius’s voice faded into the background—a distant hum that James couldn’t quite make out. All he could see was Regulus. The way the wind tousled his hair, the way he stood so still yet so full of tension, like a bowstring pulled taut.

“James?” Sirius’s voice broke through, sharp and impatient.

James turned away from the window with a dreamy sort of smile, leaving Sirius gaping at him in exasperation.

“I’ll see you later, Padfoot,” James said simply, grabbing his cloak and heading for the portrait hole.

“James, don’t you dare—!” Sirius called after him, but it was too late. James was already gone, the portrait swinging shut behind him.

Postcards from Ukraine to members of Congress – a suggestion 💡 🇺🇦 🇺🇸 📮

It's clear that House Speaker Mike Johnson is acting on orders from Donald Trump to prevent a Senate bill which includes aid to Ukraine from getting a vote in the House of Representatives. Johnson is a craven careerist who would sell his mother into slavery to please Trump.

The Senate bill ("Emergency National Security Supplemental Appropriations Act") could still be taken up – and would almost certainly pass – if just a handful of Republicans from moderate districts decided to support a parliamentary procedure called a "discharge petition" in order to bypass Speaker Johnson.

There are 17 Republicans in the House of Representatives in 2022 who won in congressional districts where Joe Biden had beaten Donald Trump in 2020. These Republicans from moderate districts would be a good grouping to entreat to support the discharge petition. A number of them have already expressed support for Ukraine in the past. It's a matter of getting them to put conscience ahead of their fear of Trump.

Below is a list of addresses of the district offices of those 17 Republican Representatives. If you are in Ukraine, buy a postcard and clearly write a short message which tells how you love freedom and how Putin's illegal war has affected you. It can be in English or Ukrainian. Use a Ukrainian stamp for postage and mail it as soon as possible.

Individuals need pick just 1 of the 17. But schools, businesses, clubs, and military units with at least 17 people can arrange to send one to each of the listed Representatives.

Be polite but urgent. Perhaps remind them that Ronald Reagan understood the dangers of Russian imperialism.

FAQ

Why physical mail instead of email or phone calls? There's an enormous chance that your email would end up in a spam folder. Also, the Congressional email system tends to prioritize email originating from the districts of each individual House member. Phone calls from outside the US are likely to be filtered out. Unlike email or phone calls, a physical piece of mail has a real world presence. The recipient has to do something with it. You can't simply press DELETE to get rid of it.

Why postcards and not letters? For security reasons. It takes less time and effort to inspect a postcard than a letter or parcel. Your mail will arrive sooner.

Why use postage stamps instead of a postage meter? You want the recipient to know that you are REALLY from Ukraine. Using official Ukrainian stamps is a simple way to do that. When people see Україна or Ukraina on the stamp then they will know it originated in Free Ukraine. FYI: the letter Ї does not exist in Russian, recipients should look for this on the stamp. Also, your stamp automatically turns the postcard into a collector's item. It is more likely to be saved and to serve as a continuing reminder of your urgent request.

Why send the postcards to district offices instead of offices in Washington? Postcards from Ukraine will get more attention locally by local staff; if a sizable number arrive, it might even get mentioned in local media. In Washington, people tend to be more blasé about such things.

What is the proper form of address for House members? Rep. or Representative before the surname – no distinction based on gender.

The top takeaway isn’t that Ukraine might soon develop nukes, which it couldn’t make any progress on without Russia detecting it, but that Ukraine might soon build its own long-range ballistic missiles and thus lead to Russia compromising on its goal of demilitarizing Ukraine if it’s unable to stop this.

The Times sent tongues wagging after their report last week about a Ukrainian think tank’s proposal advising their country to accelerate the construction of crude nuclear weapons if Trump cuts off aid. This follows similar comments from Zelensky last month that he then swiftly backtracked and which were analyzed here. The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry denied any such intentions and Zelensky’s top advisor Mikhail Podoliak claimed that such a plan wouldn’t deter Russia even if it was successfully implemented.

The abovementioned developments were newsworthy in their own right, but it’s regrettable that other aspects of The Times’ report were drowned out by the sensationalism of this story. The present piece will therefore draw attention to three points that most folks might have missed if they didn’t read the original report and instead only relied on others to inform them of the gist about it. The significance of what was left out from this story will then be analyzed too since it’s arguably the most important part.

The first point that many missed is that the director of the think tank that produced the report claimed near the end of The Times’ article that his country is just six months away from producing its own long-range ballistic missiles, which could reach as far as 1,000 kilometers/621 miles. That could place Moscow in Ukraine’s crosshairs if such missiles are launched from west of the Dnieper or St. Petersburg if they’re launched from Chernigov Region. He might just be bluffing, but it’s still worth pointing out.
