Wendy couldn’t do anything else but nod in approval when the dancers of AND*ROMA presented the choreography they came up with. She doesn't know much about dance when compared to singing, but she couldn't help but wonder why they weren't allowed to come up with their own choreography more often. It's probably the same reason she isn't allowed to write any songs for the group.

She may not be one of the better dancers, but Wendy knows how to study whatever is presented to her. It's a skill she picked up from figure skating, piano, guitar, and ballet classes before joining the ranks of Nova Entertainment.

The concept for this cover is a rather exciting one. It's more in line with what suits their current age group, to be honest. Wendy feels like they're all too old to dancing around while waving lollipops or using a fake cute voice. They are so way beyond that age, so when the dance line proposes an edgier, more mature cover, Wendy is one of the first to say "Yes!"

Honestly, Wendy would have been fine being in the background for most of the dance. She isn't part of dance line and would have been fine if they got most of the spotlight. However, she was delighted to learn that all of them got their moment to shine. All of their dancers deserve so much better, and she hopes this cover shows exactly how good they are as a team.

Before she realizes it, D-Day for recording has arrived. Unlike recording for actual music videos, there's none of the usual nerves that comes with it. The dominant feeling she has is excitement. After all, this is a surprise gift to the fans after winning their first music show. After all, they were gifted with a win, they should give back as well.

To get people hyped for the video, Wendy has taken it upon herself to post a teaser photo of the cover. It's nothing too fancy, but she had to get AND*ROMA's name out there in any way she can.

Her part in the choreography isn't too hard to follow; however, Wendy had to spend a chunk of her time trying to push her hair back in a sexy, but subtle way. She only hopes she doesn't screw up when recording actually happens.

Recording was as fun and exhausting as it could be. After all, they're shooting the same dance over and over again. At least the other girls are a whole lot of fun to be with. She can't imagine being stuck in a studio, recording the same thing over and over again with anyone else.

"Thank you for all your hard work!" They all say when recording ends. Wendy can only hope that the fans enjoy watching this as much as they did making it.

When Wendy and Kaeun had been told that they were appearing on King of Masked Singer, Wendy had been many levels of excited. Though she wasn’t 100 percent confident that she will make it past the first round, Wendy has always wanted to go on the show. That excitement is soon to deflate when they’re informed that they were going as panelists. Along with that deflation was probably a small bit of relief. After all, she wasn’t completely ready to go just yet. But she wants to very much. 

On the day of filming, Wendy decides to go bother Kaeun while in the waiting room. “Unnie, how good of a guesser would you say you are?” They’re technically rookies, so they aren’t expected to say much and just follow the lead of the more senior members of the panel. “I hope the information I got from monitoring all the senior artists on music shows comes in handy,” she continues as she picks up a magazine.

Wendy had this idea to do this cover for months. She just kept going back and forth between songs, until she settled for one that was fairly relevant but can still be given a twist. Deciding who to do it with was simple enough. If Wendy was going to show off someone, she was going to show off Seulgi. Besides, Nova was doing such a bad job of showing them all off anyway. She decided to follow in the footsteps of the other girls and try posting her own cover. 

Lucky for her, Seulgi was onboard with the plan, so Wendy had gone on to arrange the song accordingly. Wendy had chosen an English song for two reasons: the first was because she hardly got to sing in English anymore; the second was because she wanted to reach a wider audience than the one they have now. Bonus points if someone shows the cover to the actual singers. Then again, as if Shawn Mendes or Camila Cabello will care about two random Korean girls who aren’t super popular... even if they’re under the same label as the world-famous Madtown. 

Besides, “Señorita” was a song that had a completely different color from what they’re currently showing, not to mention what they are about to show. Wendy will be living some sort of nightmare as long as she will be seen acting like a tween girl by the time she presents her thesis next year. While Wendy found the way the original singers perform it too “in your face heterosexual”, it was still a song catchy enough to get stuck in her head. 

In between come back preparations, Wendy plays around with the song’s arrangement to suit both Seulgi and herself better. She finally gets to a sound she actually likes and presents it to Seulgi. Once she has her best friend’s go signal, they then choose a day to record the song and another day to record the video to go with it. For the first time in forever, she got to be actually back on the producer’s chair, so Wendy was determined to make this count. 

On the day of shooting the video itself, the atmosphere was generally a lot lighter and there was less pressure to do well. It felt like a bit of forever and ending too soon. At least Wendy and Seulgi got to be styled in a way that suited the song, rather than being close to their upcoming concept. She would hate to imagine the sheer mismatch that would have occurred. Wendy had initially planned to play guitar during the cover, but then they had a better idea that involved a bit of acting and making flirty eyes at the cameras. Honestly, Wendy doesn’t mind, as long as the final outcome finally shows off Seulgi’s charms properly.

After all, this is meant to be a relaxed setting and just something to entertain both themselves and the fans while waiting for them to promote again.

Dancing for the Audience

As soon as her own class is over, Wendy is whisked away by the managers to where the rest of her group mates are waiting. She can’t wait to tell the other girls about the class. Wendy’s not going to lie. It was nice to have a solo schedule once in a while. She will also pretend she didn’t hear the students trying to trade polaroids as soon as she said goodbye to them. 

She enters the room where all the other members are waiting. She makes a beeline to where Seulgi is minding her own business. “Seulgiiii, I missed you~” Wendy sings as she gives Seulgi a backhug. “Teaching everyone was a lot more exhausting than I thought. I’m thirsty.” She hadn’t eaten much snacks, preferring to leave them for the students and her co-teachers. They were allowed to take the snacks home if they wished. Anything left behind went to the building’s maintenance staff. “Is there a bottle of water around?”

AND*ROMA has been in this situation once before, and honestly, Wendy has learned to stop hoping. They’re called to the front with the other group that’s predicted to win first place. However, as soon as it’s AND*ROMA’s name that’s called as the winner, Wendy can only stare shell-shocked as she accepts the bouquet of flowers from the music show hosts.

Wendy can only register Sunmi giving the thank you speech while she bows to and thanks the other idol groups who come up to congratulate them. When Sunmi unni is done talking, she takes it upon herself to make a short speech as well.

“Thank you to our families, friends, and loved ones who have always supported us. Thank you also to CEO Hyun Bin and all the staff of Nova Entertainment who have all tirelessly worked hard. Thank you also to all the fans who have given us and this song lots of love.”

It only hits her that they really have won when "High Heels" begins to play as the encore. Wendy never expected this song to even be considered for a music show win. Whatever her personal feelings are about the song, this is a victory all the same. Wendy had given up the last few years of her youth to Nova Entertainment, and this win is a sign that it was all worth it. It gives her the encouragement to dare to dream. To dream that AND*ROMA can keep up with everyone.

Wendy has always taken pride in controlling her tears. She didn't even cry when they were announced to be members of AND*ROMA. The last time she cried was probably some time during SN Project, but those were tears of frustration instead of joy. To be fair, Wendy doesn't realize that the tears have started falling until one of the other girls points it out to her.

No matter how overwhelmed she is, Wendy still tries her best to stay on pitch as they sing "High Heels". After all, she is still a performer and must always deliver for the audiences. She takes everything in, hoping she can experience this feeling of victory again.

Left Speechless

This was going to be their first appearance on the S-Pop show “After Mom Is Asleep”. Wendy had checked out a few episodes to support Gray and her other friends who were guests, so she roughly has an idea of how this will go. Regardless, she is nervous about this. This is the first time they will be doing anything like this, and she can’t help but wonder how much the viewers will be entertained. 

“Are you ready for this?” Wendy asks Seulgi as they’re getting their makeup done. This was one of their first schedules as a team outside of music shows. Wendy can’t help but wonder whether she’s more excited for herself or for Seulgi. “I’m actually trying to come up with ideas so we can stay quiet while ‘Mom’ sleeps.” Wendy allows herself to snort. It feels silly calling Gray as “mom”, and she makes a note to go visit him in his dressing room and catch up before filming starts. (That is assuming she’s allowed to, of course.) “What do you think?” Wendy shows her phone to Seulgi, which contains some ways they can avoid making noise. “I thought I’d ask you before I pitch any plans to the rest of the girls.”

Too Old For This

No matter what she felt about their upcoming comeback track, Wendy still opted to stay close to the producers. She asks questions and tries her best to make herself useful to the team during recording. Going down the cutesy, bubblegum pop route isn’t her idea of surging to relevance, but she’s not the one who has the final say. Regardless, she just holds her tongue and opts to behave properly. 

As she makes small talk with the producer’s assistant, Wendy looks up when she sees someone walk out the door. She excuses herself and hands Sunmi the bottle of water she had been holding on to. “How’d it go, unni?” she asks, trying her best to hide her distaste for the overly cutesy tracks they have to record. If Wendy, a girl about to graduate from college, thinks she’s too old for these songs, what more two older girls who are above the age of 25? “Please tell me, we don’t have to sing in pre-puberty voices...”

Into the Unknown

Between Seulgi and Juhee, Wendy is admittedly more concerned about Juhee. After all, Seulgi has at least three years of training and has lots of exposure prior to debut. On the other hand, Juhee seems fairly green in comparison to the rest of them. She knows how overwhelming everything can get. There’s a few more hours before their comeback showcase, and Wendy decides to take it upon herself to check on their new maknae. 

Wendy closes her book, marking it where she stopped. She walks over to Juhee and sits on what space is available for her to sit on. “You holding up over there?” Wendy asks with a kind smile. She shakes her head, realizing how vague she sounds. “I guess I should have phrased that better, huh? How are you feeling? Nervous? Excited? Hungry?” She laughs. Admittedly, she had been more hungry than nervous  at their debut showcase last year. Then again, that was because she was too nervous to eat a proper meal.

[V-LIVE] Gyeoul’s Fashion Closet 001

Wendy had asked permission from both Manager Siwan and the rest of the A&R team if it was acceptable to do a V-Live. To her relief, they agreed to let her carry on with her idea. Besides, this was also to get to connect with their fans while they were preparing for their comeback. 

Making sure everyone is fully dressed and decent to be seen in public, Wendy finally turns on the camera. “Hello everyone, and welcome to Gyeoul’s Fashion Closet!” She greets her fans with a wave and a cheery smile. Her other hand is holding on to the camera. “Yes, you heard that right, everyone! Gyeoul’s Fashion Closet, wherein I and whoever has the misfortune of being with me, will talk about all things fashion. Wooo~” 

As she talks, she pans the camera over to the other members. “Today, we are heading over to Seoul Fashion Week for the KIOK fashion show. Thank you to KIOK’s team for inviting us to the show, as well as providing pretty outfits for us to wear. Which member do you want to see first?” 

She is aware of how fleeting the fans’ attention can get, that is why Wendy is doing all she can to retain any fans they could have. Besides, with yet another boy group in DE:CODE, she feels like girl groups like themselves have to work twice as hard to be able to at least not be a bottom-tier girl group.

“Oh? Kaeun unni? Alright then, let’s go to her!” Wendy walks over to Kaeun unni, who seems to be getting some final touches done to her outfit. “Kaeun unni! Say hello to our fans!” 

“Our Wendy is looking as pretty as always,” Kaeun unni says as she attempts to hug Wendy’s head without ruining any of their hairdos. Of course, Wendy makes sure to capture this on camera.  

While Kaeun does her greeting for their fans, Wendy pretends to be shot in the heart. “Our beautiful Kaeun unni with her charming eye-smile is here to join us,” Wendy says to the fans. She then makes sure to pan Kaeun unni’s outfit from head to toe. “So unni, tell us about your outfit today?” 

“Today’s outfit is...CC, Cool chic. Am I cool enough today?” Kaeun unni giggles into the camera as Wendy nods. “Kaeun unni is the coolest!” She says this with a smile. Based on the comments the fans seem to agree with her. “Kidding,” Kaeun unni continues. “I think there's someone cooler here.” At this point, Wendy makes a show of leaning even closer so the fans can hear what Kaeun unni whispers. “Isn’t our unni cool?” she says as she points to Sunmi unni. 

She nods in agreement. “We will have a chat with Darae unni later,” Wendy says to the camera. “Let’s stay with Kaeun unni a bit longer. So unni, what part of your outfit is your favorite?” She listens attentively as Kaeun talks about the point pieces of her look. Wendy especially likes the beret and the denim bustier top, if she’ll be honest. She makes sure to comment on how the two pieces make Kaeun unni look particularly chic. “Our fans want you to do a heart, unni! Will you grant them their request?” 

When Kaeun unni’s makeup artist shoos Wendy away, Wendy takes this as a sign to move onto the next member. “Which member do I go for next?”  she whispers into the camera as if the other two can’t hear. “Darae unni or Meiqi?” Wendy gives the fans some time to vote as she shows off the details in her own outfit. “I thought I’d go with a pink phone case today!” She holds up her pink Marymond phone case. “It will give my outfit a touch of color, as my clothes are going with a blue and white color scheme.” 

Checking the comments, it’s a tie between Meiqi and Sunmi unni. “You guys are making this hard,” she playfully whines at her fans. She then looks over to see which member is more available to be quizzed on their outfit. Wendy then quietly walks over to where Sunmi unni is. “Boo potato!” she whispers as she gently pokes Sunmi unni from behind. 

“Unni! You are the next guest of  Gyeoul’s Fashion Closet,” she says once she’s sure Sunmi’s attention is on her. “Say hello to our fans!” Once that’s done, Wendy then pans the camera to get a full view of Sunmi unni’s outfit. “In contrast to Kaeun unni’s CC look, Darae unni seems to be going to a boss vibe, am I right?” 

She listens to Sunmi unni talking about her outfit, and then Wendy turns to the cameras. “I’m beginning to think crop tops and showing some skin are a trend here,” she says with a laugh. “With Kaeun unni’s bustier and Darae unni’s crop top, we are off to looks that are appropriate for spring, but still looking super fashionable.” 

At the mention of showing skin, Sunmi unni seems to have something to say about that. To Wendy’s surprise, Sunmi unni takes off her blazer and makes Wendy wear it. She supposes she should have seen this coming. Wendy herself was wearing a top with thin straps and no jacket. “See, Darae unni’s doing her mom thing~” Wendy says this with warmth in her voice. She then turns the camera to Sunmi unni. “Check out unni’s sexy shoulders!” She sees that manager Siwan seems to want to talk to Sunmi unni about something, so Wendy instructs Sunmi unni to do some fanservice for their viewers before she ducks out of manager Siwan’s way. 

There’s one last member to bother and Wendy gamely skips over to her friend. “Meiqi! Say hi to our fans,” Wendy sings once Meiqi is in the camera’s view. “You are the last, but definitely one of the most anticipated guests in today’s episode of Gyeoul’s Fashion Closet!” Wendy makes sure not to reveal any of Meiqi’s outfit before Meiqi is ready for the big reveal. 

As soon as Wendy sees what kind of ridiculous pose Meiqi has done, it takes all of her willpower not to laugh and spoil the surprise. She slowly pans the camera to reveal Meiqi’s denim jacket, shirt, denim skirt, and boots combination. The struggle to keep her hand steady while filming was very real. After all, Wendy was holding in her own laughter “This is the only time you’ll ever see me wearing denim on denim,” Meiqi says as a form of explanation. 

“So tell me about the point behind the outfit?” Wendy asks once she’s done laughing. and once she’s sure the fans have gotten a good look at Meiqi’s outfit, pose, and facial expressions. As Meiqi discusses her outfit, Wendy can’t help but notice her teeth are chattering a little bit. Then again, Meiqi’s outfit is rather short for the weather. “I’m the only who was brave enough to wear a skirt!” Meiqi points out. “Fashion knows no temperature!” 

When Wendy requests for Meiqi to do some fan service for their fans, she makes way for Meiqi to blow kisses at the camera and winking. However, what Wendy doesn’t expect is for Meiqi to grab her and kiss her on the cheek. She gamely reacts as she tries (and fails) to smooch Meiqi in return.  

As soon as that segment is done, Wendy realizes that it’s almost time for them to go. “And that has been Gyeoul’s Fashion Closet! If we can manage, I will talk about the looks I loved the most and what trends we can all expect in the next few months. We shall see you again next time! Bye!” She does various heart signs at the camera before she finally turns it off.

Gyeoul Variety Headcanons

I took a leaf out of Ani’s book and decided to write a list of things people would know/learn about Gyeoul as they start appearing on more variety shows. I am a lazy egg and am unlikely to write out everything in threads, so this headcanon guide should be helpful to everyone. (Especially myself). 

Introduces herself as ���AND*ROMA’s main vocal and winter fairy Gyeoul”.

In their debut showcase, Gyeoul says she feels more Korean than Canadian. After all, she represented Korea in figure skating all her life and is now living and working here full-time. 

Good at riddles, facts, and problems involving numbers (Weekly Iidol) 

Personal talents are either instruments (guitar, piano, flute, gayageum), figure skating tricks (1, 2), or her Kim Yuna impression 

Learns everyone’s parts in the song so she can cover for them in case needed

Most confident in ballet, jazz, and contemporary. Improving on waacking (as seen on SN Project and Weekly Idol) 

Most likely the one in charge of explaining/talking about the song they’re promoting

A derp and makes the most meme-worthy faces. (Fans have probably used her pictures as reaction memes, or there could be a compilation of her best derp moments on the Internet) 

If asked about an ideal type, she will always answer “Lee Seunggi” 

Knows English (any variety show she’s ever been on)

Speaks English with the ones who know it (Sunmi and Meiqi). Tries teaching Seulgi too (and whoever expresses interest)

Smile and Stay Put

As soon as Wendy found out her proposed class had been approved, she immediately knew what she needed to do. She had to find some way to invite people to take her classes. At first, she had thought that giving out a signed album to the winner of the noraebang session was enough; however, Meiqi had given her an idea that took her idea to the next level. When Wendy found out how many people were taking her class, she had been fairly shocked. It was a good thing; however, it meant buying more film for her souvenir idea. 

“Meiqi!” She calls out to her same-aged friend. Wendy felt that it was right to shoot Meiqi first. It was her idea to add signed polaroids, and she didn’t have a class to plan like Kaeun and Sunmi did. “Are you available to take polaroids for the students?” She gently waves her polaroid camera, which was a birthday gift from a fan. Wendy always made it a point to use any gifts she received as much as possible. “You’ll be taking and signing quite a lot of photos, so I hope you’re ready!”

Eternal Love

Wendy had never gotten the chance to perform at the year-end shows as a trainee, so this is actually her first time to actually be at these gayos. As much as she has come to appreciate their debut songs, Wendy is grateful that they get to sing something that isn’t “Deja Vu” or “Pepe”. After all, the special stages are always the more interesting part of the show. 

She’s going over her lines for “Eternal Love” and she can’t help but wonder whether the arrangement was intentional to make it sound more festive than necessary. It’s not like the company will allow her to have control over their musical direction anytime soon, so she opts to quietly sit there and take it. As she sings her lines, she remembers she’s not alone in the room. “Sorry, unni. Was I being too loud?” she asks, trying to control her nervous laughter.

Right Here With Me

When both Solji unni and Chaeyoung announced that they were leaving both the group and the company, Wendy hadn’t had much time to think about it. After all, they were preparing for the year-end shows. As they spent the first few days of the year just practicing and working on their skills, Wendy started wondering what the future of their group was going to be. Will they continue as four? Will the company pick new members out of the middle of nowhere? Wendy has so many questions, and she’s not sure whether she’ll get the answer soon. 

Wendy realizes that they will get their answers when their manager Siwan and Hyemi ssaem call them for an important meeting. Two new members was going to be the way to go, apparently. Her jaw drops as soon as the first of the two new members walks in. This couldn’t be... Seulgi? Her best friend was literally walking in the room as the newest member of her group. She pinches herself. Her best friend was actually going to debut? In her group? They were actually group mates now? This is what they had dreamed of back then. It’s finally happening... Just not in the way they ever thought. 

As soon as they meeting is adjourned, Wendy throws her manners out the window. She finally lets out the screech she had been holding in. “SEULGIIIII!” She runs as she tackles Seulgi into a hug. “Congratulations! Welcome to the team! I can’t believe this! You’re actually here!” She says this all in one breath as she pulls away to make sure she isn’t dreaming.

Though My Heart Tells Me

When their manager calls in Wendy for a meeting, she isn’t quite sure what to expect. There’s so many things that could happen. It could be about her re-entry to Yonsei, something she did... God forbid she got in trouble. However all those fears are laid to rest as soon as the bomb drops on her. 

It’s the soundtrack for a web drama that will be airing soon, and someone in the team wants her to sing it.

Holy shit. 

This has to be some joke right? She almost says as much to the manager, but she keeps quiet. For a rookie like herself, she hadn’t expected to catch the eye, or in this case, ears of any producers. She It doesn’t feel real until the lyrics and the audio demo are handed to her. She can’t help the giddy smile she lets slip once she confirms that this isn’t a dream. 

This is the first time she gets to do something on her own, without the other girls. She has to represent the team well. 

Holy shit intensifies. 

Recalling her list of goals for this year, one of the items on her list was to record an OST. After all, that was one way to get her name (and her group’s) out to people who don’t pay attention to idols. She wasn’t exactly skilled at variety and wouldn’t be the first choice for acting roles. Besides, singing is what she does best anyway. Wendy has always wanted to sing for dramas. Although this is a web drama, she’s assured that she’s heading in the right direction. 

She listens to the demo as she studies the lyrics. It’s a sad, emotional ballad about a love that’s trying to be saved. The more Wendy listens to it, the more she wonders how the drama will go. Apparently, it stars Royal subaenim of CONVEX and her friend Sejeong. She makes a mental note to send Sejeong a congratulatory email, in case the other girl still doesn’t have a phone.  

She gets to work on mastering her lyrics, both for the soundtrack and their comeback single. It can be a bit confusing mixing up both at first. There had been instances wherein she accidentally sang the lyrics of “Cushion” to the tune of the soundtrack... leading to comedic results. Sometimes, it had been the other way around, to even more bizarre results. 

On recording day, Wendy brings over energy drinks and food to give to the song’s producers and the drama staff present at the recording. After all, she has to make a good impression on them. She asks both the producer and the drama staff as many questions as she can just to get a better feel of the song’s story and message. However, when she asked for any potential spoilers, all Wendy got was a shrug from the song producer and a secretive smile from the drama crew. 

If Wendy thought memorizing and getting the song right was the challenge, she ended up being proven wrong. She had been focused on singing the song correctly that she hadn’t had time to internalize the feelings required for her to sing it. “I know you can do it,” the director says. “Imagine yourself going through a difficult relationship that you think is still worth saving. You’re desperate, but you’re still strong.” 

It’s particularly difficult trying to capture the emotions of the song, as it’s not exactly something she has experienced. However, Wendy likes to think she has enough imagination. Wendy blinks as she tries figuring out what the producer is saying. All relationships are difficult, aren’t they? 

However, it suddenly hits her. It’s difficult to have a relationship with her line of work, isn’t it? She realizes that one day, Hugo oppa can wake up and decide that he’s tired of her. After all, she isn’t the easiest to love. She’s not affectionate. She can’t express her emotions well. Wendy is cold, rational, and realistic. She lacks the warmth and softness required to be a good girlfriend despite her best efforts. 

“We can’t break up, we can’t get farther apart” she sings to the producer, trying to imagine she was saying it to Hugo oppa. 

“That’s the feeling we’ve been looking for!” the producer says, relief evident in his voice. “Keep going. You’re on the right track.” 

Wendy lets out a sigh of relief. At least they can finally record the song without her having to overthink the emotions. Now that she knows how she’s supposed to sound, she confidently steps back in the live room. 

Wendy completes recording the song after a few changes, restarts, and technical difficulties. One take had her laughing when the producer accidentally shouted into the microphone after a drama staff member stepped on his foot. 

It’s difficult imagining herself in the shoes of the song’s persona, but the thought of losing Hugo oppa scares her more than she’d like to admit. Wendy’s always tried being more affectionate and loving. It’s something she has to consciously practice.

“And that was perfect! No more. We’re done here!” the producer says as soon as the last notes of the song fade away. Wendy smiles in relief as she finally lets go of the sad and heavy emotions she had been keeping with her while recording the song. 

Wendy finally steps out of the live room, bowing in thanks at everyone who helped with the recording. She makes sure to thank everyone for their hard work, expressing her best wishes for the upcoming web drama.
