So uhh fun fact. Earlier ideas for this fic included writing it from the perspective of the painting. Because Specht en Zoon (a book I read for school that uses that perspective) has permanently nestled itself into my brain. I didn't even like the book that much. Could barely tell you anything about the plot even. But it's in my brain forever now. I eventually decided against it, though, and I think that's for the better. Anyways, most of this fanfic is made with information that is canon to the game, or that is inferred from game things (i.e. she had to have been married after her marriage to "John Sandman" at some point because she has Aaron and Anastasia). However, this doesn't mean that some of Sands' book lore isn't still canon to this story. The Baroness is not someone who knows all of the information around Garnok, or even Sands' long live. She might be unknowingly unreliable at some points, and that is intended! Title from "Storybook" by Heather Dale.

The last fic for the Ghost AU this month, though not the last AU fic, and for sure not the last Ghost AU fic planned - we haven't even gotten through all the origins yet!

I originally planned for this story to have the Soul Riders in it. I scrapped that idea after writing two lines. Corinne deserves a proper origin just like the others, not one overshadowed by the presence of the Soul Riders. They still might appear at a later date, but not right now, right here. It made the story feel way more natural to write, too, and I'm very happy with how it turned out!

Holy shit I managed to go over 1k words for the first time ever. This is a historic moment to me, I am so proud of myself. Because of this, I split it up in 4 chapters for clarity, but don't worry - I've posted them all simultaneously! This fic was also not supposed to be the first introduction to my headcanon lore for the Paths. I haven't even made any lore posts about it yet - those will likely come sometime after october. But even then, this change of order of the two Path-focused fics I had planned was well, not planned. I first had this fic for day 31, but then I decided to not write two fics on one day, and instead shift a few fics to earlier in the months. It's doesn't have a HUGE impact overall; the other fic describes some Path duties that were only broadly alluded to or not even mentioned in this one, but it really messed with my head for a bit. I also spontaneously developed some OC's for this. I wasn't planning to. But Wendel, Fiore and Arsinoe have now taken up residence in my mind and good luck evicting them. Anyways, I really hope you all enjoy this one!

I swear it’s a happier story than those warnings make it sound.

My notes had this as an unspecified character. But my heart said Lisa, and I love Lisa and I love writing her, so I didn’t fight my heart too much.

I wanted to play around with the concept of Soulmates and Soul Marks, but within the context of Aideen’s Gift, and thus with a non-romantic soulbond between a horse and a human. Lisa, with her canonical star birthmark, was perfect for that.

I didn’t set out intending to explore some of Lisa’s trauma and trauma responses again but it just flowed out my fingers and it felt right.

The part of the title that is in brackets comes from Mandy Harvey’s “Something I Can Feel”, a song that has single-handedly made me want to make revised versions of my old soul rider playlists.

It’s mainly told as a ghost story by a narrator from our modern day. It was hard to try to figure out how to make this format feel right, but I’m proud of what it has become! Aaaa the final fic for ssotober 2024! I'm so proud of myself :D I also really want to thank anyone that followed along this year - whether it was just one fic or all of them, your support was invaluable in keeping me going! And of course, a shoutout to @feliciawolfpaw and @kelly-dreamway-sso - without your prompt lists, most of these fics probably wouldn't have been written! This month was really one in which I really just allowed myself to be more experimental, challenge myself, as well as actually write for my AU's! Speaking of AU's... People who were around on ssoblr in 2020 might remember my Dream Circus AU. I have not written anything for it, ever. That changes today. While this fic is currently listed as part 1 of the series, there will probably be a few fics that come before this one in the timeline. I actually debated just keeping this one in the drafts and writing an earlier timeline one for the prompts, but I think it still works on its own, to be honest. This AU plays a bit more loosely with the canon but it's just plain fun to do that with this one!

Hey do you ever think about how much storms absolutely wreck Hollow Woods? Because I haven't been able to get it out of my head since the updated Valedale champ. Anyways- The return of my Path OC's. Fiore and Arsinoe are barely in this one, though. I don't think it came through properly, but I see the Paths as a sort of trifecta that each protect certain parts of the Hollow Woods. Whimsy protects fauna, Terra protects flora, Runology protects the magic. Of course, they will overlap in certain areas, but it's still why I chose the "triangle" prompt as a part of this fic. I will go into detail on Runology and Terra duties at some other points (probably lore posts) and won't go into full detail about Whimsy either, but I will share some of it here. (My eventual lore post will hopefully be less "just listing things" though.) In my lore, Whimsy are a bit like the Jorvik Rangers of Hollow Woods. They are the first response-and-rescue team to certain events in Hollow Woods - in this case, a natural disaster. They keep the paths, signs and lanterns in working order. They keep an eye on the wildlife to ensure their continued safety, and they work closely with the other Paths and help out other groups within the Keepers when needed (such as, in this fic, helping the other Paths ready themselves for the storm).

Why do I keep writing fics that require me to name NPC's and/or make OC's... Why do I do this to myself...

I love the encampment and so I just had to write something for them. Not sure if "spiky" fully came through - I interpreted it more as "prickly", then extrapolated that into rivalry! I couldn't find Sancho's pronouns on the wiki so! Enby be upon thee! Title is from "Traveler's Song" by Aviators. Yes, I did name everyone in the encampment. I'll put a screenshot of my notes under the cut. I do not have time to get into each name choice, but I do want to say that yes. I did in fact choose the name Serenity only because of the hilarious irony of having a non-serene Yellow Wolf be named that.
