Mr McFly
Another nightmare creature appearing from my dreams. He is a man with a fly face and a dapper suit who attacks with his two spiked tenceles coming from his twin bowties. These spikes pierce into his enemies, sucking out their soul to be captured and placed in The Cage. He is weak to smash and fire elemental attacks and appears as the midboss of Day 2 in Imprisoned Chain. I don't know what he's inspired by, but possibly by Dr Manfly from Terraria, the Buzzbound fangame/analog horror videos, and strangely enough the Behemoth boss from Castlevania Portrait of Ruin. (Mr McFly's tentacles mirror how Behemoth's spit out entrails move in PoR)

if goodfeel (makers of kirby's epic yarn, yoshi's woolly world, and some other games) ever come back to nintendo i honest to goodness want them to make a fire emblem spin off
i want a cute arts and craft fire emblem game that like.. maybe has gameplay similar to mario + rabbids and persona 5 tactica where its still a srpg but has a lot of elevation and terrain and plays quite differently than fire emblem
take a main character from each fe game (or throw all the emblems in) and then grab a handful of fan favorite characters for a big crossover army. make them all yarn and button based with like.. little needles for swords or other art supplies as weapons. make it like the nutcracker prince where its just a big toybox army that takes place in relatively natural areas. i think that would be very fun and whimsical
basically i want a kirby's epic yarn flavored fire emblem spin off

As a game designer, I will say something you probably don't expect from me:
Online personality quizzes are video games.
They are interactive digital media for the purpose of entertainment. There is no reason not to consider them in conversations about game design unless you think of them as simply a lesser medium. I'm going to be talking about them here through the lens of game design, because it's honestly fascinated me for a long time. If you want to check out my track record, check out this quiz I made in high school as a supplemental for a tabletop game, and this quiz that essentially functions as a Gender Dysphoria Diagnosis. Now then!
What is the core appeal of a personality quiz? Well, it's pretty straightforward, to discover something about yourself. It's kind of an inverse of the character creator, instead of self-expression the aim is to find something that you can't express. But even so, answering the questions themselves are a form of self-expression. I feel like expression and self-discovery are often left out of conversations about design, because they're a lot more personal and difficult to quantify than something like challenge. But they are often vital to making a play experience work. It's really important when you play that you feel like your style of play is your own.
To get philosophical for a second, the nature of a personality quiz will necessitate two core assumptions: 1) that there are distinct types of people that can be neatly categorized, and 2) that answering questions in an online quiz is an adequate way to determine someone's type. This is not uncommon, it is the basis for psychological diagnoses after all, but inevitably it leaves gaps in capturing the full human experience. In quizzes this usually manifests in two ways: Either the answer doesn't capture your experience, or the questions don't.
This is a really noticeable thing on uQuiz, and anybody who's been on that site knows the common pitfalls: Asking you to pick song lyrics from an artist you don't listen to, asking you to pick aesthetics when none of them really resonate, or lacking the appropriate nuance when talking about complex issues. At that moment, the game breaks down. It stops being about expressing the self, and becomes about what kinds of people the quiz's creator can imagine.
There is a certain narrative component to all this. A quiz tells a story, even if a small one. It can tell you something about yourself, but it will also inevitably say something about the person who created it. And that doesn't have to be a bad thing. If you ask the right questions, and ask them the right way, you can guide your audience towards realizing things just by how they how they answer. You can, with effort and care, make a solid piece of art out of an online quiz. But not everybody is looking to do that.
Look, I've skirted around it for a long enough time. We all know uQuiz is mostly populated by people in high school or younger than that, and most of them will never read this post. This is functionally a site for amateur game developers to make something quick and easy, but they're not using the same gamic language as itch.io or Newgrounds or Scratch. And that's fine, like i'm not saying it's bad that young girls and queers have a space to be creative and have fun. But it does mean that, as someone who is Not a teenager and who works in engines like SRPG Studio, i am not exactly built to thrive in this climate.
The quizzes that get the most popular tend to be the most immediately clickable, stuff about fandom or relationships or whatever meme phrase is popular that day. Anybody who makes art for the internet knows the importance of clickability, of being immediately eye-catching with a promising pitch. And what a lot of these titles end up emphasizing is the quiz creator themself. There is an undeniable social component to making or taking a quiz. Because the quiz maker can see all of your responses, there is an extent to which both the creator and the taker are getting to know each other. This is, honestly, the secret sauce that I only realized as I was writing this. There is a real community and sense of fellowship with modern online quizzes.
So what do we make of all of this? Well, using the MDA framework, we can see that some of the core play aesthetics for an online quiz are Expression, Discovery, Narrative, and Fellowship. If I were to give some advice for people making quizzes, it would be to lean into these more. Give players more options for expression, ask more meaningful questions, give more insightful results, and make it your own in a way that's hopefully endearing and not irritating. Other avenues for quiz-making might be ones that lean more into fiction, asking players to roleplay as a character, rather than answering as themselves. It might be using the format to give specific goals, like asking players to find the way to a specific result. It might involve playing with agency, giving players intentionally few or too many options to comment on the nature of the question. But honestly? Just have fun! I take it on myself to think too hard about this stuff, because it helps me grow as a designer. I think it's really fascinating to see how game design crops up in places that aren't normally considered "games." But honestly, if this post caused the vibe of uQuiz or Quotev or whatever site to change, I'd be horrified. Honestly just, game design is really cool. That's the takeaway.

EDIT - LOG 1: 20.09.2024
I'm having a lot of fun using RPG Maker to start up Overclocked! and I've already got a good chunk of the opening dialogue finished! Once I get up to the first combat, I'm gonna switch to learning pixel art, then back to programming the srpg elements. That might end up being the toughest part of all of this. Having fun though!

I realized I’ve never made a satisfactory pinned post. So here we go.
I am Edmund! I’m making a game! And this blog is for said game! My main blog is @edmundthearchwizard.
So, what exactly is this game? Well, it’s a tactical RPG(Y’know, like Fire Emblem or Dungeons and Dragons(Yes I know that D&D doesn’t technically require a tactical grid shut up)) based off of the Greek myth of the Trojan War. You know the Trojan war.
So, how I making this game? I’m using RPG Maker MV, with a large menagerie of different plugins, primarily SRPG Engine MV and it’s related plugins. Why MV? Because that’s the one I own and am used too.
My current plan is that the Main Story will be 16 chapters(So, 16 major maps), plus the tutorial. But, that may very easily become larger. I also plan for at least 6 post game chapters based on the Odyssey. So, while it won’t be huge, it will hopefully be a fairly satisfying size.
I have no images with this post because, one, I already have some early images on this blog, and two, because, as said in my previous post(https://www.tumblr.com/thetrojanwarorsomething/744868777379971072/been-awhile-since-the-lost-update-hasnt-it) I’m working on transitioning away from using the RTP(Default RPG Maker MV assets) to making my own custom assets, and I’m. To exactly a great artist. So it’ll be awhile before I have any close to final images to show you.
How long do I think it’ll be before I can release the game? No idea. I hope at some point in 2025, but knowing me, it won’t be until 2026.
Oh! And I'm taking title suggestions! I'm currently calling it Troy Story, but I'm hoping to find something better. If I pick your suggestion, you get to be in the credits! So! I hope this post has got you interested! If you have any questions, send them in! I hope to make a Ko-Fi at some point as well, so stay tuned for that. Thank you for reading!

hihihi!!! I’m going over your work and it looks really awesome and cool!!! I noticed you use SRPG for your development—how do you like it??? I’m not familiar with the software and I’m curious as to how effective you find it to be :D
it's really good if you're willing to meet it where it's at. srpg studio is designed to make a very specific kind of srpg (see shouzou kaga's work) and if your tastes are more modern than that it can seem inflexible. fortunately there's plenty of community coders who've made plugins to add in a ton of cool stuff (i'm working with one of them on believer) so you don't have to limit yourself. but personally i've found it really productive to try to familiarize myself with the system, know its limitations and what it Wants me to do, because i don't really want to spend most of my game development time fighting the engine.
in general i really value srpg studio because it lets me make the srpg of my dreams without having to worry about code too much, but that is biased by me being a game designer who likes getting in the weeds with this stuff. there are some pretty big limitations to it that you should know about though. the default assets completely lack the option to make characters of color, so you'll need to rely on custom art for that. srpg studio games only really run on windows, so you lose a pretty substantial audience. the user interface sucks ass, the english version was machine translated and in general it's not amazing to navigate.
you gotta really love srpg's to enjoy srpg studio. it's not like rpg maker where a lot of the most popular stuff from it aren't even rpg's. this is an engine for game designers who *want* to make a tactical rpg. personally, i have never felt more at home with a game engine. but i'm in good company

Ciel: Princess Maker and other stat raisers
Anholly: Cooking Mama and Kirby
Iris: Ring Fit and Animal Crossing. likes turn-based combat
Melanie: is in various gacha hell
Parilyne: VR stuff (Beat Saber master) and rhythm games
Aster: getting emotional over VNs and otoges (also somewhat in gacha hell). also anime games
Erythr: for some reason i imagine her playing Disco Elysium
Jeanne: Animal Crossing, Baldur's Gate, Dragon Age, Mass Effect, etc (a true gamer)
Pailou: out here clearing NES games and other retro stuff. likes arcade machines
Marie: SRPG games!! not great at fighting or action games. she'd prefer the really hard stuff like old school FE

It's a shame my old game was canceled. RPGmaker Net didn't accept it for the list because of grammar, and there is little to tell about it. Years later, SRPG Studio was launched in August 2018. #SRPGMaker95 #RPGMaker #IndieGame #SRPGStudio #SimRPGツクール95 #RPGツクール

Packin' Mary
A creature from the nightmare who came from my dreams. Likely inspired subconsciously from Bloody Mary, the "Pigeon Dove" enemy from Bravely Second, and Marth.exe. She wields a light elemental gun that she shoots you in the eyes with, blinding you so she can suck out your soul and bring it to The Cage. She is weak to smash and dark elemental attacks, especially kicks which can knock away her gun, leaving her more open to attack. Underneath her white mermaid wedding dress is a blood-red skeleton. She has a stake through her forehead dripping with blood, a sign of a previous failed attempt to take her down. Appears in Imprisoned Chain as the boss of Day 2 as well as in Crazy Night.
