Jī Tuǐgū - a Shaggy Ink Cap yao from Megapolis

Appearance

150cm, slim, pale, androgynous, messy shaggy hair. Always has a headband to pull their bangs back and shoes with thick soles or platforms to separate them from the ground. Prefers using outfits with black-and-white base and colour accents

Backstory

For centuries Tuigu was just a mycelium of Shaggy Ink Cap mushrooms that liked to listen to the city's citizens and learn from their experiences. Somewhere a century ago, the local mushrooms started to feel too sentient for the folk’s taste and became an urban legend about the suspicious spying ‘srooms. After a while people learned that’s not a part of a malicious scheme but a curious yao kid. The young yao spawned in the city and learned from private lectures it spied how to grow and dissolve its ‘shrooms fast and transform into a human child. In the end it was adopted into a family of chicken yaoguai as the youngest kid

Personality

They lament the fact they need to restore Megapolis’ green areas over and over again because of all those attacks. She is a chill-looking extrovert, likes outdoor activities, likes going into abandoned-looking places and talking about Megapolis’ modern lore. He tends to be too noisy and a know-it-all for their own good, but if they need to get out of trouble, they can dissolve into the ground and reappear somewhere else

Abilities

Transformation - can transform into human, chicken and maybe some other beings. As how JTTW Zhu Bajie has trouble transforming into something gentle and elegant, Tuigu can’t transform into something more threatening that an average human

Mushroom growth - can grow mycelium and fruiting bodies

Basidiocarp spying - can hear and sense things through its fruiting bodies

Dissolving - can dissolve its mushroom system and her main body into a cluster of slimy goo (just as Shaggy Ink Cap dissolves its cap into a slimy mess). He can move through the ground in this form. Can’t remain gooey for a long time or else it’s going to be overwhelmed

Advanced sense of chemistry - they’re just naturally more sensitive to the difference in chemical substance of objects and environment

Plant reading - understands hormonal plant signals to some extends

Bad sense of dao and magic - he did learned stuff but of boy their knowledge is lacking

On Kingdoms

i havent studied biology outside of a couple epidemiology courses and rereading the Southern Reach series a few times. actually, I think most of my biology knowledge comes from studying neuroscience for a a computer science class, which itself might've been for a unit on linguistics. it's disparate, is what i'm saying.

thankfully Neopia is not Earth, and while the Earth Kingdom framework is a useful starting point, mistakes I make for Earth biology are not necessarily mistakes in Neopian biology.

anyway, in Earth categories, the Kingdoms are Plants, Animals, Fungi, and then, depending on who you ask, some combination of Protists/Monera/Bacteria and sometimes Viruses to cover the miscellany.

Neopia has those and a few more.

Plantae, Animalia:

easy. Neopia definitely has these. at risk of getting ahead of ourselves here I think like 75% of the life I've documented is a plant or animal. I don't think I need to share examples, you know a plant or animal when you see one. all of the Neopets are animals.

there is a hazy territory about plants and animals, but we'll get to that.

Fungi:

Fungi is a lot less common, but it's easy to identify. any specimen named "Mushroom," "Toadstool," "Shroom," or "Toadstool" is a fungus.

except Fungi Fruit and Sroom Fruit, which are both plants named after their fungusy qualities.

there are no lichen in Neopia, at least not in the form of an item, so we don't have to worry about that just yet.

Protista/Monera:

Neopia definitely HAS bacteria. there's a Gummy Amoeba item, which may or may not be biological life itself but is an attestation of the existence of amoeba.

there are also several diseases in Neopia. i want to review these more closely before saying anything about any single one, but their existence is strong evidence for the general existence of bacterial life.

more importantly, there's algae! I wasn't aware until recently that algae aren't plants but bacteria! here is a Spongy Algae:

speaking of:

do you know how badly i wish i could read any of the volumes of Biological Encyclopedia of 14 Basic Neopian Algaes Vol. 12? i need to know. and that's 14 whole algaes!

anyway I have very few things in the Protist/Monera category, and even fewer in Viruses, so I clumped them together. really hard to say whether these even constitute separate kingdoms in Neopia without being able to put any of these under a microscope. one could even argue algae are plants in Neopia if TNT doesn't know they aren't. dunno. we'll deal with this later. for now this kingdom is a catchall for "we have these on Earth but they're not Plants, Animals or Fungi," which now that I think about it is how they function on earth too really.

Elementa:

the Kingdom of Elementals!

Neopia is a magical land and so has biological life that is borne of magic itself. in this category are Faeries, certain spirits, and a variety of Petpets. for example, Motes and Novae are elementals.

the Chainmail Mote is one of a few that have a description indicating Motes are alive and have limited intelligence:

Faeries also belong here, I think, but we have to eventually do a deep dive into Faeries to decide that for sure. Fyora herself might be an alien.

this category is pretty hazy as there are a lot of currently otherwise-categoried specimens that COULD be elementals. my heuristic so far has been that if it wouldn't function biologically without magical influence, it's an elemental -- such as Petpets with magical abilities or anatomy that doesn't occur in baseline animals, and plants with above average intelligence and maneuverability.

figuring out the lines between Kingdoms will be part of the purpose of this blog!

Construct:

not technically a Kingdom in its own right but a necessary category. Neopia has plenty of robots and advanced alchemical processes and so on that make creating new life fairly easy. however, these creatures do not occur without having been created intentionally by other creatures. see most of the Robot Petpets (note that "Robot Petpet" doesn't mean the petpet is a robot, just that it is sold in the shop that sells Robot Petpets).

this similarly disqualifies specimens that come from an artificial ingredient in the Cooking Pot and plants that only grew a certain way due to intentional outside influence, such as Cube-Shaped Watermelon.

some items that could be considered "Constructed" may be labelled "Altered" or "Haunted" if they are possessed or exist only due to significant intentional influence on a species.

again part of this blog will be determining where the lines on "significant intentional influence" fall, if those are the right lines to even be considering.

Alien:

couldn't figure out the latin for this one.

Neopia has a lot of aliens. it is apparently common to find an unusual creature out on the Virtupets space station and decide to just eat it. Dr. Sloth is an alien. Fyora might be. the Alien Space Fungus sure is.

alien life cannot be considered part of Neopia's typical Kingdoms, as it did not evolve from Neopian life under Neopian pressures. there may be some instances of Neopian life evolving from alien life that made its way to the planet's surface, but that's a separate question. life that is not from Neopia proper cannot be categorized under the Kingdoms of Neopia and likely follows its own taxonomical system that isn't the focus of our efforts here (yet).

alien life is usually easy to identify because it is found on Virtupets or Kreludor or coming from materials from deeper space, like meteors and portals to the void.

and that's that! this is the framework we'll be using for now -- discussion of whether it's appropriate and fitting to our actual evidence is wholly welcome and I already assume we'll be making adjustments as we learn more. just, so far, it has been useful for me to categorize things this way and I haven't found need for others -- the hardest part has been determining which Kingdom a specimen belongs to, when that specimen falls in a hazy area between potential Kingdoms. nailing down how to classify specimens consistently is also a large goal of this project.

Character Analysis - SMG4

Hello, my fellow SMG4 fans. This is the first character analysis I'm doing. Today, I'm gonna share my thoughts about the Meme Man himself, SMG4. 😊

SMG4 is a Meme Guardian who came from a USB flash drive that crashed into the Mushroom Kingdom. There, he had no idea where he was and what he was supposed to do. He used to be bitter enemies with SMG3, but over the course of the entire SMG4 series, the two of them seem to get along just fine with each other. So with that out of the way, let's begin the Character Analysis. 😊

SMG4 is the main protagonist of the series, as well as being the leader of the SMG4 Crew, and one of the four characters to have two new designs, with the others being SMG3, Boopkins and Meggy. He, along with Three, used to be Mario recolour. But after the events of The Lawsuit Arc, had a complete design overhaul to better match the merchandise of the entire SMG4 series.

SMG4 is a fair skinned individual who wears white overalls, brown shoes, a blue long sleeved shirt, a blue hat with his custom emblem and white gloves. He sports black hair and blue eyes to look sort of like his poster design.

In WOTFI 2023, SMG4 wore a spy outfit that consisted of a blue sleeveless jacket, a white long sleeved shirt, a blue bowtie, black pants and dark grey shoes. He also wore light grey gloves, had no hat and wore a Rizz Watch, which remained in the Neutral Zone for most of the special.

Throughout the course of the entire series, including the Showgrounds Saga, SMG4 has played the role of The Straight Man. He may seem like a relaxed guy at first, but sometimes he gets a bit ticked off whenever Mario sometimes got on his nerves.

An example was shown in the first video after WOTFI 2022 - Mario Screws in a Lightbulb. Here, we see Four getting mad because Mario wasn't keeping the ladder still. This is after SMG4 was redesigned into a "CocoMelon Looking Ass Design", as put best by SMG3.

The Perfect Video

Starting with "SMG4, Are You OK?", it was just a normal video, until SMG3 got popular because of his stream reaching a tonne of views. Here, Four was determined to beat Three. After the course of that video, Three's advice of "Quantity Over Quality" made Four go into a Sanity Slippage, where the Meme Man was trying to work on his "perfect video".

In "Mario Goes to Ohio", we see SMG4, still looking pretty normal, popping out of hi sroom when Mario tells him that they're going to Texas. SMG4, however, says that he can't go, as he's working on a special video. Mario, angry at this, says that making videos has never stopped the Meme Guardian. However, SMG4 says "Not this one. This one's gonna be different..." in a creepy tone, which means his sanity is slowly slipping away from him.

In "Mario Steals the Constitution", SMG4 is still in his room, looking rather ragged, still working on the video. He mutters a phrase that's familiar to all of us; "It's gonna be perfect. It's gonna be perfect. It's gonna be perfect". That line alone scares the audience as we become worried about him.

Then, we go to the "Mar10 Day" episode, and that's when shit really hits the fan. 😟

After Meggy knocks Wario into the WiFi router, the Internet gtts disconnected. And THAT is the final straw for SMG4. He bursts out of his room, screaming the line "SHUT UP!!! CAN YOU ALL SHUT UP?!?! LOOK AT WHAT YOU'VE DONE!!!". As Wario looks up at him, Mario is just happy that Four finally came out of his room.

SMG4 then causes chaos at the party, highly frustrated at the others for causing so much noise. He screams at them to "GET OUT!!!!!" and shouts the mantra that everyone had dreaded since "Mario Steals the Constitution". The guests all leave in a panicked state, as SMG3 points out that everyone just wanted to celebrate Mario's special day, only for SMG4 to snap back and shout "NONE OF YOU UNDERSTAND THE WORK I DO!!!". He then reconnected the WiFi router and tells everyone to leave him alone.

Mario: But, SMG4... The main event -

SMG4: JUST LEAVE ME THE FUCK ALONE!!! 😡

Man, that cut us deep in the feels there.

During the announcement trailer for the IGBP movie, we see SMG4 looking more insane than ever. It felt like he was being controlled by a strange entity. Also note that he has a complete redesign overhaul here. The animation in this part was more fluid and smooth compared to the GMOD animation used beforehand.

The "It's Gotta Be Perfect" movie explains everything. It shows us that SMG4 was corrupted by a Demon-like keyboard that controlled him and forced him to finish his perfect video. By the end of the movie Four gets free from the keyboard's powers and escapes unharmed, along with SMG3.

After the events of the movie, which resulted in Peach's castle being permanently destroyed, SMG4 decided to make it up to everyone by building a new castle, which looks amazing by the way.

In War of the Fat Italians 2023, we see SMG4 and SMG3 working together as a team to get the Sussy Notebook back from Mario and Marty. It was successful and the ending was wholesome as heck.

And that's my character analysis. It's a bit of a long post, but you get the idea.
