Netflix eyes 22 original films from India by 2020 end, eight already out

Latest News Video streaming platform Netflix is seeking to create “diverse” and “appealing” content based out of India and will have 22 such movies by the end of next year. The over-the-top (OTT) service provider has already released eight, and the rest 14 will be out over the next 18 months.

Starting with Abhay Deol-starrer Chopstick at the end of this month. This is in addition to a slew of original shows and series lined up from India. Netflix, which has been in India since January 2016, has collected data points that suggest the market has a huge appetite for films.

As a percentage of the overall time spent on Netflix, film viewing in India is the highest and 70 per cent of its subscribers see at least one film in a week, it says. Bringing you diverse stories, Netflix announced three films and the cast for the previously announced Freedom. These stories straddle a variety of genres and formats, including drama, suspense, and an anthology. With this, the streaming service further solidifies its commitment to making Indian films and taking untold Indian stories to the world. The announcement extends Netflix's global emphasis on giving audiences a breadth of award-winning, entertaining and enjoyable films, and comes on the back of its record 24 nominations at the 92nd Academy Awards.

Srishti Behl Arya, Director, International Original Films, India, Netflix, said, “We are making films that our members in India and around the world will love. As we continue to expand our film slate in India, we are thrilled to work with imaginative storytellers who break boundaries and choose the unexpected over the safe. We want to be a home for India’s finest filmmakers and their unique, universal and personal stories.”

Here’s a look at the four films from Netflix’s Indian slate for 2020:

Choked:

A hapless bank cashier’s life takes a turn when she finds a source of unlimited money choked in her own kitchen. The film is directed by Anurag Kashyap and stars Saiyami Kher and Rohan Mathew in pivotal roles.

Speaking on his most recent association with Netflix, Anurag Kashyap said, “I have found a home in Netflix and with every project, I do with them, I feel like I’m able to push my creative boundaries a little more. Choked is unlike anything I’ve done before, much like all my outings with Netflix, and is a story that, I believe will appeal to a varied audience.”

AK vs AK:

A brash film director kidnaps the daughter of a well-known movie star. While the star is relentlessly searching for his daughter, the director/kidnapper films the desperate search in real-time for his next blockbuster movie. The film is directed by Vikramaditya Motwane and stars Anil Kapoor and Anurag Kashyap.

Talking about the upcoming film, Vikramaditya Motwane said, “AK vs AK has an extremely, unique and gripping storyline and Netflix is the perfect platform for it because of their organic disposition to take creative leaps of faith and constantly push the envelope every single time.”

“Attempting your craft on a completely different platform is both exciting and daunting, and it’s a challenge I’d take on only with a committed streaming service like Netflix. I’ve partnered with Netflix on Selection Day and Mowgli - Legend of the Jungle in the past and am amazed at how far and wide the stories have traveled. And being able to take this leap with Vikram (Aditya Motwane) and Anurag (Kashyap) promises to be an exceptional experience. I can't wait for these stories to come to life!" said Anil Kapoor.

The Other (working title):

An anthology of four films that showcases completely different facets of the “other” angle. Shedding light on relationships and their complexities, The Other signifies the third person in a relationship - the one who breaks it, or, maybe even completes it. The film is produced by Karan Johar at Dharmatic and currently is in production. The ensemble cast includes Shefali Shah, Manav Kaul, Nusrat Bharucha, Fatima Sana Shaikh, and Jaideep Ahlawat.

Producer Karan Johar said about the film, “An anthology allows us to bring together diverse creative minds to showcase different facets of the same concept in a unique manner, and Netflix presents these beautifully. The Other is one such film that delves into the various complexities of human relationships. Each director will bring their unique vision to the table, amalgamating in a piece that many viewers across the world will definitely resonate with.”

Freedom:

Starting 25 years into the future, Freedom traces the history of a family in three stories that are intricately interwoven with the personal and ideological histories of India. The film is directed by Dibakar Banerjee and stars Naseeruddin Shah, Manisha Koirala, Huma Qureshi, Kalki Koechlin, Divya Dutta, Zoya Husain, Shashank Arora, and Neeraj Kabi.

“Freedom is the story of us regular middle-class folks. With family ties, parents, grandparents, children, loves, lies and secrets lost and suppressed over generations. It's about food, ambition, sex, and betrayal. It's about what we hide and what we wear on our sleeves, and about a past and a future that we call India. As a filmmaker, I want to move away from cinematic stereotypes, and working on Lust Stories and Ghost Stories with Netflix gave me renewed hope about creative expression in India. Freedom is the next step forward.” said Dibakar Banerjee.

Priyanka Chopra, Nick Jonas 'seal relationship' with 'roka' ceremony

Mumbai: Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas, following months of speculation, on Saturday solemnised their relationship with a traditional Indian ‘roka’ ceremony. The actress says she is “taken” with her “heart and soul” by the American singer, who has introduced her to the world as the “future Mrs Jonas”.

“Taken… With all my heart and soul,” Priyanka posted on Instagram with an intimate photograph following their pre wedding Punjabi ritual at her residence here.

Nick posted the same photograph in which the couple looks much in love, and wrote: “Future Mrs Jonas. My heart. My love.”

Priyanka, 36, and Nick, 25, looked every bit ‘desi’ in traditional Indian wear for the ceremony, which was attended by their close family members and friends. Nick’s parents – mother Denise and father Kevin Jonas Sr – who flew down from the US with their son for the occasion on Thursday – also dressed in Indian wear for the celebrations.

Designer duo Abu Jani Sandeep Khosla, whose sunshine yellow creation made Priyanka glow with joy, posted on Instagram: “Priyanka Chopra is heavenly in Abu Jani Sandeep Khosla Couture at her roka ceremony. Here’s wishing the beautiful couple every joy.”

She wore a chikankari sherwani. “The colour is as auspicious as the embroidery is intricate to celebrate this sacred and romantic occasion,” the designers said in a statement.

Nick wore a pristine white kurta churidar as he performed the ‘puja’.

It was a Ganpati Puja, said Kamal Kumar Mishra and Pradip Kumar Trivedi, the two priests who took care of the ‘roka’ proceedings.

Nick performed all the rituals here as per ‘Sanatam Dharam’, the priests added.

Photographs from the occasion made a splash on social media.

In one of the first image that did the rounds, Nick was seen cosying up to Priyanka, who is seen holding on to him, as they stand against a green background with a logo that read ‘NP’ – merged together to denote the amalgamation of the first letter of both their names.

While there was a buzz that Nick proposed to Priyanka on her 36th birthday on July 18, news had followed that he got a Tiffany & Co. store in London shut down to purchase an engagement ring for his lady love.

Priyanka had been making efforts to hide the sparkler, but in the photograph that she has shared from the ‘roka’, the rock takes the limelight.

The ceremony was attended by Priyanka’s cousin Parineeti Chopra, as well as celebrities like Arpita Khan Sharma, Mushtaq Sheikh and Srishti Behl Arya.

Well-known names from Bollywood and Hollywood also sent in good wishes in abundance for the couple. Gigi Hadid, Ranveer Singh, Hrithik Roshan, Katrina Kaif, Ileana D’Cruz, Preity Zinta and Laura Brown are some of those who wished them a happily ever after.

She forayed into the international showbiz world with a singing career, and eventually landed the lead role in American TV show “Quantico”.

It gave her a launchpad that pushed her presence in the global entertainment universe. She made her Hollywood debut with “Baywatch”, followed by “A Kid Like Jake”. She will also be seen in “Isn’t It Romantic?”

She is also an active philanthropist.

Nick is a popular singer and has also acted in “Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle”, as well as done TV shows like “Hannah Montana”, “Camp Rock” and “Scream Queens”.

The two have been creating a buzz since a joint appearance at the Met Gala red carpet in 2017, leaving everyone wondering whether they were dating.

At the Met Gala, Priyanka had just laughed off a romance with Jonas, insisting they simply shared an agent and were friends. She had also said they went to the Met Gala together as they were both wearing ensembles by Ralph Lauren.
