A Tour of Naxos

The owner of our hotel laid out a route for us to tour the island of Naxos. We circled the northern half of the island. We did not drive many miles, but every road is narrow, winding and accented with hairpin turns. There is no thought of hurrying. It took us all day.

Our first stop was in Melanas, but I am not sure why. It was a tiny mountain village, but there was nothing in it and it was not particularly picturesque. It was good practice for driving through narrow village streets!

Next stop was Chalki. Chalki was very cute. It had once been under Venetian control and one can see their influence in the architecture.

Iron railed balconies and buildings in colors other than white….

…and a very Greek style square for coffee.

Next stop was Panagia Drosiani or The Paleochristian Church of Panagia Drosiani. It is more commonly called the Church of the Dewey Virgin. The myth has it that the icon of the virgin seeps/ dews whenever the town is in danger.

It was built in the 6th century and is the oldest Christian church on Naxos and the oldest Byzantine church in Greece. It was closed when we got there but we gave the outside a walk round.

Next stop was the Cave of Zeus.

Located at the foot of Mount Zeus, a twenty minute hike brought us to the cave.

The myth is that Zeus hid here to escape his father, the Titan Cronus. Here he received the lightning bolt that made him the ruler of Olympus. From whom he received the lightning bolt is a little vague.

But the cave was cool.

On to Apeiranthos.

Apeiranthos is another mountain village dominated by an old Venetian castle.

It was busy with tourists but cute.

On to our favorite spot, Moutsouna.

The town was once a busy port, exporting emery that was mined in the local hills. Now it is a quiet fishing village with a really nice beach.

We had lunch by the beach with Amorgos visible in the distance. Then we went for a swim

It was a great little sandy beach with some shade available under the cedar trees. Shade is always a good feature. The water was calm and crystal clear.

Our last stop was in Apollonas, on the northern tip of the island. We expected to swim here, but the beach was disappointing so we settled for ice cream before heading back to Chora.

We definitely prefer the quiet east side of Naxos, as far from the port as possible. We are going to head back there tomorrow and explore some beaches to the south.
