What industries are fasteners used for?
Fasteners might seem like small components, but they play a pivotal role in numerous industries, holding together structures and equipment that form the backbone of modern society.
As the leading Fasteners Manufacturer, Supplier, Stockist, and Exporter in India, Bullion Pipes & Tubes LLP understands the significance of these tiny yet mighty components across various sectors.
In this article, we'll delve into the wide array of industries where fasteners find their indispensable applications.
Fasteners
Fasteners are mechanical devices or components used to securely join or affix two or more objects together. They play a fundamental role in various industries and applications, providing the necessary connections that ensure structural integrity, safety, and functionality. Fasteners are designed to withstand different types of forces, such as tension, compression, shear, and torsion, depending on the specific application.
There are numerous types of fasteners, each with its own unique design and purpose. Some common types of fasteners include:
Screws: Screws have a threaded shaft and are used with a corresponding threaded hole or nut. They are rotated to create a strong, threaded connection between two objects. Screws are versatile and come in various head styles, including flat, round, pan, and more.
Bolts: Bolts are similar to screws but typically have a non-threaded portion (shank) and require a nut to create a secure connection. They are often used in applications requiring higher levels of tension or load-bearing capabilities.
Nuts: Nuts are paired with bolts to secure two objects together. They come in different shapes, such as hexagonal (hex nuts), square, or round, and are tightened onto the bolt's threaded shaft to create a strong joint.
Washers: Washers are flat, thin discs often placed between the nut or bolt head and the surface of the material being fastened. They distribute the load and prevent damage to the material while providing a more stable connection.
Rivets: Rivets are permanent fasteners used to join two or more materials together by deforming the end of the rivet to hold the materials in place. They are commonly used in applications where welding or screwing is not practical.
Pins: Pins are cylindrical fasteners that are inserted into holes in two objects to align and secure them. They can be held in place by friction or locking mechanisms.
Clips and Clamps: Clips and clamps are fasteners used to hold objects together or secure them in place temporarily. They often provide quick and easy solutions for assembling and disassembling components.
Anchors: Anchors are fasteners designed to provide a secure attachment to a base material, such as concrete or masonry. They are commonly used in construction and structural applications.

READYMADE ART
Disassembling the Office chair and wooden kitchen chair:
The first step in the process of combining two chairs into one was the task of disassembling. This was a combined effort that both Alexiya and myself enjoyed.
Designing the chairs:
Once the chairs were laid out and photographed, we could see what we had to work with.
Exploded view of the office chair.
Choosing the chair design:
Our first deign was reasonably standard. We swapped things around from chair to chair but nothing to original. Our second attempt at design was more creative. We used parts of each chair in alturnative ways but neither of use were happy with the outcome. The thired chair was one that we both liked. However we had some problem solving to work out with the design. (not happy with the legs).
At this point we were shown previous chairs, one of wich demonstrated a possible solution to our problem. We decided that the outcome was now to easy to achieve so we turned our attention to the fourth chair. The fourth design presented with more origianality, would be sturdy and functional. Quick sketches of third and fourth design
Practice using the equipment:
After an introduction to using the safety equipment, drop saw, hand saw, vices and various other tools and skills such as joinery necessary for the assembling process we were able to get started.
Drafting the designs: Design Three
We set about making the full size drawings of our designs in class. Alexiya drew ‘one’ and ‘two’, I drew ‘three’ and ‘four’. We both completed our chair design drawings at home in order to create works we were happy with.
Making the Rocking Chair / Stool: Design Four
Step one: Drill out existing holes in the base (plywood from the front, backrest of the Office chair) so dowels can fit. Fill in the holes with dowels and sand. The curvature in the moulded ply will act as a rocker in the new chair.
Step two: Measure cut and sand top of backrest of wooden kitchen chair. Attach by screwing to metal painted armrest supports from the office chair.
Step three: Attach by screwing the metal painted armrest supports from the office chair at an inverted angle (wider at the front, narrower at the back) to the rocker base to be used as the support for the seat.
Step four: Sand and glue foam cushion to seat of office chair to be used for seat of rocker.
Step five: Screw metal frame using washers to prevent slippage to wooden base of rocker.
Step six: Saw plastic moulded legs of office chair leaving three legs (fan like).
Step seven: bolt wooden seat to metal supports.
Step eight: drill through plastic backrest and drill hole in seat base then bolt together. (we abandoned the back rest. It did not offer support as a backrest, was to heavy for the rocking action and did not look any good) So we replaced the original foam cushioning that had been removed for the backrest.
Step nine: cut armrest to size and shape then sand Step ten: measure where armrests were to go and drill holes in seat and base of armrests.
Step eleven: measure where armrests were to go through foam cushion and cut out foam.
Step twelve: Stretch material seat cover over foam cushion and staple.
Step thirteen: measure and mark where armrest will go through cushion cover, cut cover and insert bases.
Step fourteen: Glue and bind tops of armrest to bases.
Step fifteen: Make fringes from remaining material to decorate edges of seat cushion and front of rocking stool.
Step sixteen: Attach by staple.
Step seventeen: glue wooden knobs to front of wooden stool and bind.
Step eighteen: Remove binding to finish.
MATERIAL ANALYSES
Material make up and processes.
Vinyl:
Vinyl was accidently invented by Dr Waldo Semon (scientist) In 1926. The BF Goodrich Company hired him to develop a synthetic adhesive to bond metal and rubber together. Vinyl is a synthetic plastic made from ethylene approximately 43% (found in crude oil) and chlorine approximately 57 %( found in salt). The salt is used to obtain chlorine through a process called electrolytic disassociation of salt. In a process called 'cracking', the petroleum is passed through high heat and pressure, as a result of which the petroleum is broken down into ethylene, butadiene, propylene, and other by-products. Through further process, the other by-products are separated and only ethylene remains, which is then used to manufacture Vinyl.
Metals:
90% of steel is composed of iron and carbon. Low alloy steel may have up to 10% of other elements by weight, such as molybdenum, manganese, chromium, or nickel, to improve the hardenability of thick sections. Steel is one of the world's most-recycled materials.
Galvanization:
is the process used to prevent rusting. Zinc is applied to iron or steel to provide a protective coating. Commonly parts are dipped in a bath of molten zinc called the (hot-dip method). If a finish is applied to the screw, it must be of a compatible makeup. Steel may be coated with zinc, cadmium, nickel, or chromium for extra protection. This is not effective for small screws as the coating may fills in the screw’s thread.
Foam:
""Polyurethane foam is one of the four basic types of products that can be made from raw, liquid polyurethane. They are comprised of two chemicals which, when mixed and heated, form liquid polyurethane prior to being further processed. These chemicals are polyol, a type of complex alcohol, and diisocyanate, a petroleum byproduct that reacts strongly with alcohol. By combining the two, a stable long-chain molecule is formed. It's a polymer, or plastic, known as urethane””. (Sited 17 .4. 201)
http://sciencing.com/how-polyurethane-foam-made-4598475.html
Flexible polyurethane foam:
is used for a variety of products, for my purpose office chairs. The foam is flexible and can be made to fit almost any shape and firmness. It is light, durable, supportive and comfortable as cushioning. There are mainly three types of disposal technology; landfill (a serious waste of land resources); Incineration: The burning of waste polyurethane materials can provide heat equivalent to the same weight of coal and could provide an alternative energy supply. However if the combustion during the process of incineration is incomplete it produces poisonous gases which seriously pollute the atmospheric. At the moment, physical recycling and chemical recycling are preferable in terms of environmental responsibility.
Plywood:
Plywood is manufacturing process in which thin layers of wood veneer are glued together with each layer being ‘crossed-grained’ (wood grain being rotated up to 90 % to one another). Benefits of plywood being ‘crossed-grained include, improved consistent strength as well as dimensional stability. It reduces the occurrence of wood splitting when nailed as well as minimalizing expansion and shrinkage. Warping is reduced by using an odd number of layers.
In 1797 Samuel Bentham first applied for patents covering several machines to produce veneers. Immanuel Nobel realized about 50 years later that thinner layers were preferable.
Plywood has many varying uses including:Artists use plywood to replace traditional canvases and boards. As early as 1880 in New York Ready-made boards for oil painting were produced in three-layered plywood (3-ply). Flexible plywood is designed for making curved parts, a practice which dates back to the 1850s in furniture making.
‘Kitply’ is common terminology In India for plywood as a result of branding for the use of waterproof plywood in the 1970s.
Glue: Urea-Formaldehyde glue is used for indoor purposes. Phenol-formaldehyde glue is water resistant and commonly used for outdoor and marine environments to prevent the laminated particles breaking down as well as maintaining plywood strength. Xyligen (Furmecyclox) may be added to the glue to deter fungus growth. These adhesives are of concern as they have been proven to be carcinogenic in high concentrations. Many manufacturers are beginning to use low formaldehyde-emitting glue denoted by an "E" rating ("E0" possessing the lowest formaldehyde emissions).

READYMADE ARTIST:1 Tim Noble and sue Webster:
Tim Noble: Born 1966 Nationality: English
Sue Webster: Born 1997 Nationality: English
Movement: conceptual art, dada, transformative art, Post YBAS ‘Young British Artists.’
Noble and Webster attended Cheltenham Art College and Leicester Polytechnic respectively. They graduating at Nottingham Trent University in 1989; held residencies at Nicholas Treadwell Art Mill, and the sculpture studios in Dean Clough. Later Noble attended the ‘Royal College of Art’ where he began an MA in sculpture. From their beginning as a duo, they shared a strong interest in how people evaluate, perceive and respond to abstract images and forms. Punk Rock music has been a driving factor in the creation and intent in their work which combines opposing concepts such as form and anti-form, craft and rubbish, love and hate. Their artistic intent has been likened to 'perceptual psychology'. Their strategy of assembling waste materials, including metals and taxidermy creatures as well as personally discarded items to make identifiable artworks through light projection has been referred to as transformative art. In 1997, they exhibited their signature work of 'Miss Understood & Mr Meanor’, a work made by the positioning of light on piles of rubbish to produce silhouettes. Their second major work titled 'Dirty White Trash (with Gulls)'1998, highlighted their ability to combine abstract and representational art. The shadow portraits are in stark contrast to the garbage on the floor. Other major works include: ‘The Undesirables' which greatly challenged the conceptual base of ‘what is art’. Webster and noble have art works in other genres exhibited throughout the world, such as their series of light sculptures which reference pop culture and their figurative drawings. However, it is the readymade (assist), ‘shadow work’ that I am particularly interested in.
READYMADE ARTIST:2
Sir Anthony Douglas Cragg,
CBE, RA, Knighted 2016 Cragg A was born: 9 April 1949 England, Liverpool Period: Contemporary art, Modern art, Sculpture, Influences- Conceptual art, sustainable art ( eco art) He enrolled at the Gloucestershire Collage of art and design in 1969 and has lived and worked in Wuppertal, Germany since 1977. Cragg saw physical objects as holding contextual and social information. That by Changing the materials and/or context he also changed the meanings and ideas associated with the art. As a consequence, he was constantly looking for connections between objects (manmade and/or natural) to the human experience. Through his work, he developed and exploited new relationships. In the “‘Early Forms series’” commencing 1070s, Cragg used bottles and containers amongst other items to create new entities to elicit emotional responses, and meanings from the viewer. By the 1980s he was exhibiting reliefs which were scraps of multiple materials systematically organised through colour and shape, such as in ‘Red Indian’ in 1982-3 and ‘Britain Seen from the North’ (1981) a signature work which speaks to the economic and social unrest in the north of Britain under ‘Thatcher’, (is now exhibited in the Tate collection). The late 1980s saw him using more permanent materials both natural, such as stone and wood as well as manmade materials including, plaster, fiberglass, bronze and steel. He has created a diverse range of original works which combine multiple strategies and materials. The ‘Bottle Rack’ is referenced by Duchamp’s famous Readymade, (bottle rack) 1914. Cragg’s ‘Bottle rack’ has diversity of movement and bottle placement allowing each assembling to differ from any other while still maintaining the original construct.
READYMADE ARTIST 3
H A Schults
HA Schult: born Hans-Jürgen Schult on June 24, 1939 in Parchim, Mecklenburg He studied art at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf from 1958 to 1961.
His teachers were: J Fassbender, G Meistermann, K O Gotz. Schults was inspired by J pollock, Y Klein and G Mathieu. Art genre: conceptual art, object art and happenings Schults resided in many countries. However he was unable to establish himself as an artist in the USA which saw him relocated to Germany in 1986. His time in America greatly influenced his art. Schults viewed consumerism and the emerging pop art scene critically.
He was referred to as a “pioneer in eco-art” by the Washington Post (Rachel Beckman). Through his work he attempted to amalgamate art and life, to bring art to the general population and not just the elite. He also attempted to stimulate public awareness of waste in a throwaway society. Much of his art paid tribute to peoples whose human rights were abused or ignored by big business and governments. Schults was known for being strongly emotionally involved with his creations and often situated them in the area where he had sourced his materials, in an attempt to awaken social conscience and build awareness of the human impact on both the built environment and that of nature. Many of his smaller works which are displayed in glass cabinets “picture boxes” mimic landscapes covered in trash while small children play in a filth, suggesting a possible and disturbing future to the viewer. (2017 in many countries a reality). His works include the:
“Trash People” above (which exhibited on all continents between 1999 and 2002) consists of one thousand life sized human forms created mostly out of discarded crushed can is a statement on consumerism.
“Love Letters Building”: ( above) 2001, hundreds of thousands of love letters covering the front of a post office in Berlin.
“AutoDom” 2006, ( above) Schult used Ford Fusion and Ford Fiesta car parts to symbolize a connection between Cologne and New York.
“Save the Beach”: In 2010, is a protest of the destruction modern societies are causing the natural world, specifically the ocean. Schults’ work transcends cultural differences, engages people at a grassroots level and provokes reflection and encourages action. I fine schults’ art and commitment to his personal philosophy inspiring.

What are Flanges and their types?
Flanges are an essential component of any piping system, as they provide a secure and leak-free connection between two pipes or valves. As the leading Flanges manufacturers, suppliers, and exporters in India, Bullion Pipes & Tubes LLP understands the importance of choosing the right type of flange for your application.
In this blog post, we will cover everything you need to know about flanges, including their types, materials, and applications.
Before we dive into the details, let's start with the basics!
Introduction
Flanges are mechanical connectors used to join two pipes or valves. They are usually made of steel, and their main purpose is to provide a tight and leak-free seal between the two parts. Flanges come in various types and sizes, and choosing the right type of flange is essential for the safety and efficiency of your piping system.
Types of Flanges?
Flanges come in several types, including weld neck, slip-on, socket weld, lap joint, threaded, and blind flanges. Each type has its unique characteristics and applications, and selecting the right one will depend on several factors, such as pressure ratings, temperature ratings, size, material compatibility, and cost.
● Weld Neck Flanges
Weld neck flanges are the most common type of flange, known for their high durability and strength. They are welded to the pipe or valve, making them ideal for high-pressure and high-temperature applications.
● Slip-On Flanges
Slip-on flanges are easy to install and remove, making them ideal for applications that require frequent maintenance. They slide over the pipe or valve and are then welded or bolted in place.
● Socket Weld Flanges
Socket weld flanges are similar to slip-on flanges, but they are welded only on the outer side of the flange, leaving the inner side free of welding marks. They are ideal for smaller-sized pipes and low-pressure applications.
● Lap Joint Flanges
Lap joint flanges are used when a piping system requires dismantling frequently. They are also ideal for applications that require easy access to the pipe or valve.
● Threaded Flanges
Threaded flanges are designed to be screwed onto the pipe or valve, making them ideal for applications that require easy installation and removal. They are commonly used in low-pressure applications.
