This picture has become all to common for every UC Berkeley Student attempting to get to their classroom simply to go to lecture. For the past weeks, and especially this week due to this week being declared “Free Speech Week“, hundreds of police officers have been building barriers around campus for the sake of safety. According to the New York Times, which is where this pictures is from as well, the administration has spent $1 million dollars for these chaotic weeks for security at campus protests. The school has been solidiering up for the unexpected violent rallies on Sproul Plaza and will continue this process until safety is insured. This provides a huge distraction for the university which is struggling with a budget debt of $150 million. Also, Students are simply attempting to attend their classes, which are being canceled, and with this interrupting their learning environment. 4,000 People Stood On Sproul Last Night

4,000 people stood on Sproul last night.  The crowd was incredibly impressive, and people standing on the roof of the Golden Bear Cafe paid homage to a similar image from the 1960's Berkeley Free Speech Movement.

Ten tents erected by cheering protestors.  After last week's encampment was taken down by police officers, Occupy Cal voted last night to rebuild the encampment in another attempt to occupy Sproul.

Two pianos played throughout the day.  The atmosphere throughout the day was positive, with an outdoor room, sofas, books, and pianos to set the scene for numerous teach-outs held near Sproul or on the Savio steps.

One former U.S. Labor Secretary.  Robert Reich's attendance and speech at the event gave the movement credibility, and his important work for the country showed that the movement has support, even from (former) political figures.

Fifty years of history of social movements in that same plaza. 

Sproul Plaza was the site of numerous Berkeley Free Speech Movement events and protests in the 1960's.  The Savio steps in Sproul are named after Mario Savio, a key figure and political activist in this movement.  His widow attended the protest last night and introduced a number of speakers.

Fourty students arrested last week for blocking police access to their encampment.  Chancellor Robert J. Birgeneau has granted amnesty to all but two of the arrested demonstrators.  He has also launched an investigation into police actions last week.  Many members of Occupy Cal believe that the Chancellor should have prevented police from beating students, and some claim that his excuse that he did not know what was going on during his time in Asia is false.  There is also a petition started by Occupy Cal calling for the Chancellor's resignation.

Hundreds of police officers called in on the evening of November 9th.  The Mutual Aid Agreement allowed Berkeley PD and UCPD to call for assistance from other local police departments, but some actions by UCPD and the other departments have been deemed "police brutality" by members of Occupy Cal and external observers.

Twenty-six voting members of the Regents of California.  The Occupy Cal movement calls the Regents the 1% and demands that they reverse their privatization of the UC system.  Their scheduled meeting this morning was cancelled due to fears over public safety, an indication that the Regents have indeed taken notice of Occupy Cal.

Eighty-one percent increase in in-state tuition over four years.  For many students who already rely upon student loans and financial aid, the tuition increase means that they will either have to leave college or take on more loans and debt.

Two Berkeley English professors beaten last week.  Associate Professor Celeste Langan, who teaches 19th-Century British Literature and Poetry, was beaten by police even after requesting to be arrested peacefully.  Associate Professor Geoffrey O'Brien teaches 20th- and 21st-Century British Literature, 19th-, 20th-, and 21st-Century American Literature, Creative Writing, and Poetry; he was also beaten and arrested.  Their experiences have outraged the Berkeley English department and sparked an increase in faculty participation at the Occupy Cal events.

4,000 people stood on Sproul last night.  Last week it was six hundred, this week it is four thousand.  The movement is growing, you do the math.
