I took an hour out this week to revisit one of my favourite local walking spots - Walthamstow Marshes. The marshes are a 36.7 hectare biological Site of Special Scientific Interest and luckily for me are within a 25 minute walk or a 15 minute bus ride away. And they are well worth a visit - due to their size its so easy to lose yourself in their urban wilderness with only the company of the odd dog walker, which is perfect if you need a little me-time! The marshes were used, as far back as Anglo Saxon times, as lammas land – common land used for growing crops and grazing cattle - and even to this day the area is used for occasional grazing. On the grey November day I went however, there were no cattle in evidence - but there were plenty of birds. I was lucky enough to see a family of 5 swans in flight - honking as they powered past like Boeings - plus busy cormorants, a pretty wren, magpies and I just missed a Kestrel (a couple of ladies also out on a walk were lucky to see it however!). In summer you can also see butterflies, and in the evening pipistrelle bats. What's great about this area is that once you are there, you can have a short walk, or stretch your legs to go north into Walthamstow Wetlands, or south along the Lee Valley towards the riding centre (say hello to the horses!). Alternatively you can cross over into Springfield Park if you are with your kids and (in non lockdown times) visit the playground, or mooch along the canal for a coffee or to check out the canalboats at Springfield Marina. So much opportunity to engage in nature, and right on my doorstep! How to get there: We take the 393 bus and walk through Springfield Park to get to Horseshoe Footbridge. We then cross over the canal and head south to do a circular walk normally going across the boardwalk in the reed bed.
