Spreadsheet Technology

Spreadsheet technology is consistently being monitored, edited, and improved. Spreadsheets are so widely used in the business world that it is essential that the technology is always up to date and best serving its users. One of the most essential improvements made to spreadsheet technology was its development of using an equation. This made spreadsheets a thousand time more convenient to use as they were doing the calculating for the user. Looking ahead, Excel is in the works of more improvements to be more accessible to its user. The following Forbes article mentions that Excel is going to be more connected to the internet so that users can easily tag companies and relevant info will immediately be accessible. The article also mentions that Excel will be able to perceive which information in the sheet is the most important and automatically pull that info out to be visualized. I think this advancement will be very useful to business people and those who need to be able to immediately access info about other companies from the internet or quickly analyze only the most important info from their spreadsheet. 

I don’t have much experience with spreadsheets, but something that has always tripped me up while using them is that they don’t automatically size their columns to match the size required for what is written in them. I think it would be very convenient if an improvement allowed the columns to be auto sized depending on what is written in them. This would be convenient for all users of spreadsheets.

Spreadsheets Post 1

VisiCalc --> Lotus --> Excel

We have come a long way since the first spreadsheet developed, Visicalc. While Microsoft Excel seems to be the most popular and most well known, there is another that is right there with it. Google’s version of spreadsheet called Sheets. Which its biggest pro is easier sharing and editing with multiple people than Excel. 

It looks like the most recent improved spreadsheet application has been made by Google in their updated version on Sheets. It’s faster, it can handle larger data sets and you are not able to work offline and when you gain internet connection, everything will sync. Text now automatically flows into empty adjacent cells, which means no need to merge cells

It seems as though the updates made to spreadsheets will benefit most users, not just a particular group of people. I feel like new users have a hard time adapting to using spreadsheets. They are not the easiest for someone with no experience. Once you have adapted and pick up on all the different ways to do things it gets easier. As with anything in life. Spreadsheets are actually very convenient and have the potential to make peoples lives easier if more people adapted to them. I would like to see more people using them. The ordinary person not just businesses.

The last few points point towards where I would like to see spreadsheets go. They have been, and are very good at producing ad-hoc, one-off reports. This is a proper use of spreadsheets. They are often being used instead as repositories for information that really ought to be managed by a database management system of some sort. What spreadsheets should do is to allow, nay encourage, the use of data extracts from external sources, notably relational databases. The use of named ranges (which are a venerable feature from at least as early as Lotus 123 v2.01) is of assistance; Lotus Improv was a rather complex-to-use test platform for improved "modelling" whose functionality included database extraction.

In the Joan Little case, as well as in all other instances of sexual assault, it is essential to place the specific incident in its sociohistorical context. For rape is not one- dimensional and homogeneous-but one feature that does remain constant is the overt and flagrant treatment of women, through rape, as property. Particular rape cases will then express different modes in which women are handled as property…

Thus when a white man rapes a black woman, the underlying meaning of this crime remains inaccessible if one is blind to the historical dimensions of the act. One must consider, for example, that a little more than a hundred years ago, there were few black women who did not have to endure humiliating and violent sexual attacks as an integral feature of their daily lives. Rape was the rule; immunity from rape the exception. On the one hand the slave master made use of his tyrannical possession of slave women as chattel in order to violate their bodies with impunity. On the other hand, rape itself was an essential weapon utilized by the white master to reinforce the authority of his ownership of black women.

Although the immediate victim of rape was the black woman-and it was she who endured its pain and anguish-rape served not only to further her oppression, but also as a means of terrorizing the entire black community. It placed brutal emphasis on the fact that black slaves were indeed the property of the white master…

Whenever a campaign is erected around a black woman who has been raped by a white man, therefore, the content of the campaign must be explicitly antiracist. And, as incorrect as it would be to fail to attack racism, it would be equally incorrect to make light of the antisexist content of the movement. Racism and male supremacy have to be projected in their dialectical unity. In the case of the raped black woman, they are mutually reinforcive…

The social incentive given to rape is woven into the logic of the institutions of this society. It is an extremely efficient means of keeping women in a state of fear of rape or of the possibility of it. It is, as Susan Griffin wrote, “a form of mass terrorism.” This, in turn, buttresses the general sense of powerlessness and passivity socially inflicted upon women, thus rendering them more easily exploitable. Yet, just as working-class and poor white people who exhibit racist attitudes toward people of color are unconscious agents of a higher power, so rapists (though they may be individually unaware of this) are performing deeds that give sustenance, not to them, but to the existing system.
