imagine an AU where instead of Natsu dying, it was Zeref - but basically almost everything is slightly the same except for key differences. Igneel still raised and taught Natsu Fire Dragon Slayer Magic - same for Gajeel, Wendy, Sting, and Rouge. The differences come in the fact that there is no Eclipse Gate, so the Slayers are not sent forward in time, and the dragons don't use the Dragon Soul technique. So, how i envision things happening is they all become dragons, kill Acnologia together, and become cursed to become so full of magic that if they use too much power they could each eventually destroy the world - so they barely ever interact with other creatures and each other, becoming slightly more dragon than human. Wendy eventually learns transformation magic and becomes human in appearance, then teaches the others - but with the same down falls as Irene. Natsu is the one to meet Irene and teaches her the spell - then basically dips out of there away from her (like Zeref technically did). Irene stays the same, btw. Wendy came across three spells - Glitter, Sphere, and Law - and she is the one who teaches Mavis the spells and Warrod, Yuri, and Precht magic. Fairy Tail Zero is the same, and Mavis still gets cursed. Rouge is the one that "killed" her though - not with love, but by losing control of his magic, separating her soul from her body - and gives her to Wendy trying to save Mavis, when that fails Wendy takes her back to her guild, which eventually leads Precht towards his dark path and leading Grimore Heart (a dark guild obsessed with learning to control the dragons). Erza's life spans out the same, except the tower is being built in worship of Rouge - then, with Jellal (Ultear) in worship of all of the dragons (to try and control the dragons through Etherion Mind Control). Gray's town and family get destroyed by an uncontrollable eruption of Natsu's magic. That backstory stays almost the same, except Ur died in a training accident that was seen as Gray's fault. Lucy's past is mostly the same, except her mom died from Etherion poisoning from trying to use a too powerful spell to speak with the Celestials. Alvarez is kind of different so i'll get to that later. Tartarus is a guild of fanatics whose goal is to summon the dragons and use them to rule over Earthland from Fiore. Lullaby is just a cursed flute that can sometimes transform into a monster if it is surrounded and filled with enough Ethernano. Deliora will be talked about later. August and Larcade are just normal people (or are they~ ;) ).
For the led up to plot Alvarez is a Kingdom outside of Fiore that worships the old Gods (like Ankserham). At some point the Gods became angry at the amount of power the dragons have been gaining so they sought out to destroy them. The Gods chose twelve vessels to posses (the Spriggian 12) and take out the five dragons. These vessels become unageing and vertually impossible to kill - even for the dragons. Yes, they even possessed Irene. The vessals are still vertually who they were as people (Brandish's backstory is vertually the same) however their magic power is the same level as the God that possessed them - or at least how much can be contained in a human (/dragon) vessel, which is still A LOT! Like, A LOT! Each of the Spriggan went after the dragons and started to drain their ethernano and life essence, however each of the dragons managed to escape but not without a consequence - they now are virtually the ages of small children and their magic power has been significantly lowered. Also they have to go through puberty again (in otherwords, they start aging like humans again). Like this, they start looking for each other to tell them about the danger - which eventually leads them to Natsu in Fairy Tail to use as a home base, Gajeel in Phantom Lord to use as home base, Wendy with Edo-Jellal then Cait Shelter as home base (she knows their illusions conjured by the chief). One of the Spriggen attacks Tenrou Island trying to kill Natsu, Gajeel, and Wendy (though Fairy Tail does not know this - except Mavis and the dragons) and this causes Sting and Rouge to eventually join Sabertooth to gain their strength back and eventually kill the vessels and the Gods that inhabit them. Also in the Eclipse Gate arc - it is actually one of the Spriggan pulling the strings on Princess Hisui to use a powerful Celestial spell to "fortify" Fiore - but it is really a spell that will wipe the continent off the map. However, they never actually reveal themself (unlike Future Rouge) and the protagonists only find out at the end of the arc.
Deliora is a monster that was created by the Gods as an early attempt to destroy the dragons. But it was destroyed and can only be revived through Anti-Ethernano that is created from the spell Moondrip and a special spell spoken enough times with Moondrip will summon Deliora to that location. The accident that happened was actually caused by Natsu again losing control of his magic and sending off a giant earthquake and volcanic-like eruption, that caused Ur to look off and Gray to lose control of his magic output and accidentally sending an ice arrow straight through Ur's heart while Lyon lost his footing and landed on his face in the snow and hitting his head on the ice. Lyon eventually finds out the root cause of what happened (a man exploded with magic in a village) and set out to summon Deliora to prove his strength is strong enough to find this man and kill him himself. Lullaby was cursed by the Gods as a way to try and kill the dragons - which again, failed, but it was the first attempt so it kind of gets a pass. Sting is actually the one who consistently fought it and won, eventually he just grabbed it's flute form and gave it to the Magic Council and described what it was capable of - still basically stealing souls to become stronger, and the stronger it is the more souls it can steal.

Fae!Angus.
Fae. Angus.
BEST NEW MYSTIC KNIGHT IDEA.
For real - this has completely taken over my other head canons, and I've been thinking it over ever since @schimmelspore came up with it.
I love it.
It's the best of all worlds: it doesn't change anything about the first season, Angus can still play the "common peasant" part whenever he wants, and it adds so many other plotlines to the mix. It even fits with all my ideas for an impossible second season - it's great.
Now - I'm prone to being self-indulgent with stuff like this, so I wanna tone down the ideas I had in the last thread. The last thing I want is to bend the whole story around him (even though, hilariously, Angus was picking up a serious Second-In-Command role among the Mystic Knights in the later episodes, so I feel like the writers were bending the story to feature him as soon as Rohan was off dealing with his family drama or being in a coma 👀). So I've put a few restrictions on and googled a few other things.
1. I'm not super sure I like Angus being a prince anymore 🤣
He doesn't need to be. Great, 'cause it feels like cheating? To make him a super cool omg actual fae, and also a prince? We had the prince reveal with Rohan, and it is so much funnier picturing Deirdre trying to force Angus into uncomfortable, fancy clothes at boring, stuffy events, and Angus only putting up with it because she's his friend - because he's not expected to (because he's not a prince), and he is so not doing this as her subject. Technically, if he's a fairy, she's more on his land than anything uwu
I love it because none of the knights can refuse a royal command from Deirdre right now. Either they're all visiting royals who know how to respect the rule of this land's law, or they're peasants who've been raised to know their place. For Angus to not be a prince, but to no longer be subject to Kells' rule, it builds a really fascinating dynamic between the two of them. Deirdre's forced to interact knowing her crown is meaningless, which has never been the case before. It's always held some power over other people. And sure, Angus was always a bit flippant and careless when he spoke, but she had the authority to shut him up if she had to, so she allowed most of it. Now? She's got no authority.
It's like how she is with Aideen, only a hundred times worse: Aideen has always made it clear that she only does them favours as favours. Now, Deirdre's going to have to be hit with a moment where she insists Angus listen to her, just to realizes, "... Shit. He's a fairy. He doesn't actually have to." The episode where Fin Varra has to rule Kells for a day and tries to turn Angus (lol) into a Spriggen for insulting him, then realizes, "shit i don't have my powers"? That's how that moment's going to go. Every conversation is going to actually have to be a conversation now.
I wouldn't mind an episode about that, either. Aideen can get sick of them and fly off, and Angus (who's already prone to stomping off) can walk away from Deirdre too. Will he get thrown in jail? Sure, maybe! But then she's going to have to accept that the only reason Angus listens to her is because he doesn't want to be in jail. I'll get into stuff about magic in a sec - we already know Angus can pick a lock, so keep that in mind instead.
Imagine Deirdre does butt heads with Angus over the course of that episode, and that Angus starts digging his heels in more and more until he snaps and says he doesn't have to listen to her. "I'm a fairy. You wouldn't be telling Aideen what to do, so don't tell me."
She replies that she can't lock Aideen up for refusing a royal command. He says she wouldn't even try if she could, because Aideen's not her subject, and neither is Angus probably (😝). She's furious at his defiance and says, "You're not Aideen," basically threatening him with going to jail.
Angus goes, "Well, princess, then lock me up. It'll get as much out of me as yelling, but at least in there, I can have a nap."
And she does. She has to. She's a princess, and he can't talk to her like that. Maybe later, she feels awful about it; Rohan could've said something about friendship, or Cathbad about the little people, or her father about commanding one's friends, or even Aideen about how bossy Deirdre can be. So she goes to the jail to see Angus, who's relaxing in there, and tells the guards to let him out.
She's almost about to apologize, but Angus 'forgives' her before she can. Not smart, 'cause she's still hurt by how Angus was ignoring her. So she says she'll only let him out if he promises to listen to her from now on. He might be a fairy, but she's princess, and this is her castle.
And FUCKIN' ANGUS says:
"So it is. But like I've told Maeve in her castle -"
OH BITCH WHAT DID YOU SAY Deirdre explodes at the comparison, and says if he's going to treat her like the enemy - like Maeve - then he can just stay in the dungeon after all. Back in he goes, and off she stomps.
The rest of the episode can be a real soul-searcher for Deirdre. I'd want it to be more of a Deirdre episode than anything; Angus really isn't changing at the end of this. But Deirdre can now walk through her village or her castle and talk to people, trying to take her mind off how rude Angus was, and get into a situation where a peasant's a little rude to her. Maybe she breaks one of the wares of a travelling merchant, and the merchant yells for the guards to make her pay when Deirdre says she doesn't have any gold with her right now.
The guards show up, say that she's the princess, and the merchant says, "I don't care who she is, she broke my stuff!" And the guards - for this merchant's insolence - haul that merchant off to jail. Deirdre tries to intervene because she knows the merchant's technically right, but the guards say that it's always been against the law to insult a member of the royal family.
She says, "As a member of the royal family, I'm ordering you not to take this man to jail!"
And the guards say, "But if we don't, then we'll be breaking the law. And we'll be going to jail."
And she says, "But if you do, then..." And realizes she's kind of got everyone in a lose-lose situation.
The other Mystic Knights come up because they see Deirdre's in a bind, and Ivar purposely suggests that perhaps, the guards simply misheard what the merchant had said, and that the princess was letting them know about the mix-up. And Garrett just so happens to have some gold with him, which is enough to pay for whatever it was that Deirdre broke. And the merchant's about to protest this again, but there's Rohan with a Draganta Stare™ to shut that down. Everyone walks away, and Deirdre's left there with the others.
It's kind of her first chance to see how little power she actually has. Her crown puts even the people who are loyal to her at odds with her authority. The only reason no one went to jail now is because her friends knew what she wanted, and were able to help make it happen. It could be a neat way for these four to bond, especially if Rohan says maybe the reason he's never felt a prince is because no one's been afraid of him - unless they're on a battlefield. :)
The thought of people being afraid of her really sticks in her mind. She even says outloud, "People used to be afraid of Maeve." And that inspiration is enough to get her to go back to the jail and order the guards to let him out for real this time.
Before the guards actually do, Angus could thank her for her generous, merciful charity - and then say he's still not gonna do the thing she threw him in here for not doing. She can maturely take a deep breath at that, say she sees the error of her ways, and then say she cares too much about Angus as a friend to want him to only listen to her out of fear. She likes having his opinion on things. He's always had a unique way of seeing the world, even if it's hard to hear occasionally.
But.
Deirdre isn't some pushover. Maybe he's right that he doesn't have to listen to her. He isn't one of her subjects, and Kells is his home, not his prison. But this is her castle, and he should be listening to her as any good guest would. That's what Ivar and Garrett are doing - and Rohan too, in a way. And more than that... he should want to help her as her friend.
Angus, who's still in the cell right now, says it's hard to help someone as a friend when they treat you like a servant. Deirdre, for her part, can admit that, but says she has to be able to give orders. She's the princess. She doesn't even have a choice; sometimes by just exist, people are ordered to carry out the crown's will for her. It's smothering. Angus might be the one in the cell, but Deirdre's the one who feels trapped.
Angus - ummmm... points out again that he is in a cell.
Deirdre's about to be a mess, 'cause of course that sounds like Angus wasn't even listening now. But Angus cuts her off, finally relenting, and says, "Look. I'll make a deal with you: you get to be the princess giving everybody orders, and I'll be the fairy roaming the castle for fun. If you want something, ask. If I don't want to it, I won't. But if I want to do it, as a favour for my friend, then I will."
Deirdre says that doesn't sound fair to her. It basically seems like he isn't going to help her with anything.
Angus says no, he's not, if she can't ask and can only order it. But he also says she should have a little more faith in him than that. They are friends, and he's always helping her when she doesn't even realize it. For example -
He just opens the cell and walks out lol
She's surprised for a moment, but then slowly says, "Right. Magic."
Angus says, "No. Keys. :) I took 'em when you almost let me out the first time. But! But, but, but - I didn't use 'em 'cause I knew you'd be angry. So I stayed. As a favour to you. As my friend."
It's like a peace offering. Deirdre thinks about how to respond, and eventually takes the keys and hands them back to the guards. As her friend, she's going to generously, mercifully, and charitably order that everyone forgets Angus just did that. One of the guards might try to protest, since he quite literally stole the keys to his cell, but Deirdre will add that as part of her royal order, she wants everyone to forget the guards let him steal those keys. So that shuts them up, and they scurry off.
Angus, free again, finally apologizes for their fight. Deirdre shrugs and says it's proof that someone in Kells isn't afraid of her. Angus says he's terrified of her, and that's the real reason he stayed in the jail: protection. He can't imagine how red she'd be if she found out he'd escaped. Kells is his home, and he wants to be able to sleep in it with both eyes shut.
It's a fun story that'd simultaneously explain how Deirdre, Garrett and Ivar all adjust to Angus' newfound identity. Deirdre would have it the hardest, but the two would certainly appreciate the pain of having someone in their kingdom that they couldn't control. For Garrett, that would be his brothers. :/ For Ivar, it's his sister's pet dog.
There are still some adjustments needed for King Conchobar, since he's not really sure what to make of Angus now. He's pretty always treated Angus as "Rohan's funny friend who does crime and also my daughter wants to make out with him," and as a Mystic Knight, Angus is still going to follow those orders. It's more about coordination than commands, really. So the only questions Conchobar has is, "🤔 How much fairy magic are we talking about exactly?" and "I know he's not a king, but is he like... a noble now...? Or something? He's not living in the castle." And honestly, that second question is the status quo for the show lol Angus gets away with a lot so I don't really think much is going to change in how they talk to each other. It's more that Conchobar will now always ask what Angus can do whenever they make their battle plans. I'm debating how Angus would feel about that uwu
Speaking of magic...
2. I want his to be conceptually simple
The fae in this show can just sort of do whatever. They transform stuff, summon stuff, conjure stuff, enchant stuff, scry on stuff, predict stuff, fix stuff, and make illusions of stuff. Aideen does everything from "make pants out of grass" to "heal herself", seemingly only limited by size.
After googling some Irish mythology specifically so I didn't try to bastardize something that already exists, I saw two big themes:
Fairies use a lot of magic to purposely fuck with humans, both for fun and as revenge for being antagonized
Fairy magic can often be used to explain some human phenomena
As in, "Something bad happened, blame it on an encounter with a fairy."
The vibe I got is that if you mess with a fairy, even accidentally, there is a 1,000,000% chance that they will return to get your ass. If you don't mess with fairies, there's about a 30% chance. If you actively try to befriend fairies, there's a 50% chance, but there's also a 50% chance that it works and they're really niceys to you uwu
CASE IN POINT, THIS DAMN POST PUBLISHED EARLY AGAIN AND I WAS FREAKING ABOUT HAVING ACCIDENTALLY LOST THE ENTIRE DRAFT
WOW OKAY I BROUGHT THIS ON MYSELF, I GET IT, I'M SORRY
I will make local copies from now on 😭
I'm also gonna pick up from here 'cause 🤷🏽♀️ I wasn't finished, so sit tight

[“The ability of plants and mycorrhizal fungi to reshape their relationships has profound implications. We are familiar with the story: Throughout human history, partnerships with other organisms have extended the reach of both humans and nonhumans. Human relationships with corn brought about new forms of civilization. Relationships with horses allowed new forms of transport. Relationships with yeast permitted new forms of alcohol production and distribution. In each case, humans and their nonhuman partners redefined their possibilities.
Horses and humans remain separate organisms, as do plants and mycorrhizal fungi, but both are echoes of an ancient tendency for organisms to associate. The anthropologists Natasha Myers and Carla Hustak argue that the word evolution, which literally means “rolling outward,” doesn’t capture the readiness of organisms to involve themselves in one another’s lives. Myers and Hustak suggest that the word involution—from the word involve—better describes this tendency: a “rolling, curling, turning inward.” In their view, the concept of involution better captures the entangled pushing and pulling of “organisms constantly inventing new ways to live with and alongside one another.”
It was their tendency to involve themselves in the lives of others that enabled plants to borrow a root system for fifty million years while they evolved their own. Today, even with their own root systems, almost all plants still depend on mycorrhizal fungi to manage their underground lives. Their involutionary tendencies enabled fungi to borrow a photosynthesizing alga to handle their atmospheric affairs. They still do. Mycorrhizal fungi are not built into plant seeds. Plants and fungi must constantly form and re-form their relationships. Involution is ongoing and extravagant: By associating with one another, all participants wander outside and beyond their prior limits.”]

🤯 Honestly?! You just changed my mind. He does think they're funny.
I know Fin Varra says it'd be bad if Maeve ruled so he's got a mutual interest with Kells, and kinda needs to work with them, but like...
The Mystic Knights are probably as much fun for the fae to watch as it is for the audience. Fin Varra's got that scrying pool, right? Tir Na Nog probably ha full-on livestreams of what's happening - in fact, I know they do, because how else would Fin Varra have known that Angus, Ivar and Deirdre were under Maeve's rage/paranoia spell while Rohan was in Tir Na Nog complaining about being Draganta? They were absolutely watching, and that pudding was Movie Night pudding, and Rohan was interrupting the fun A-Plot drama with his angsty Destiny subplot.
Now I'm trying to think of who their favourites are. 🤔
I know Aideen obviously has Rohan as #1, and Deirdre's her least favourite. I think she likes Angus more than Ivar, because even though he's done things like THROW A ROCK AT HER, she's had more heartfelt moments with him.
With Ivar, it seems a bit more... professional? He's more stoic than the others. He has his outbursts - OH BOY lots of them - but they're more spread out, and he's far calmer than the others. I think it's the royal upbringing that Aideen connects with less. The loud peasant vibe is more interesting.
So for Aideen, it's probably:
Rohan
Angus
Ivar
Deirdre
Which means Aideen is one of those fans who instantly hates the girl on the show 'cause they get in the way of her Rohan x Reader fics 😭
I don't know what she thinks of Garret. Aideen likes seeing humans brawl, but doesn't like when they argue. In fact, the fae seem to utterly loathe anyone getting their feelings hurt (which fits the lore around offending them, I think, if I'm not confusing it with other lore). That's what Aideen emphasizes when Angus storms off because Rohan was being a jerk, and also when she talks about treasuring gifts from friends after Angus storms off 'cause they were all being jerks. And it's Fin Varra's (and Midar's) go-to move when someone insults him: Spriggen Cloud Beam.
So Garrett would be funny because he's competitive, but not liked as much as Angus because he can be kind of snobby. That might put Ivar ahead.
As for Lugad...? 🤔 She might like him because he seems to mean well, and because he's competitive too. But he also brags a lot, and he doesn't have the same 'Chosen One' angst.
Okay - so maybe Aideen's list is this:
Rohan
Angus
Lugad
Ivar
Garrett
Deirdre
I think with how dramatic the first three are, Ivar is a refreshing amount of level-headedness to break it up. She probably has little chats with him off-screen. At least until he becomes the most competitive out of all them. But then he goes back to being chill again. uwu
(also omg no wonder she's always around and within earshot. if everyone's watching the scrying pool, she's basically watching on her own channel by being there in-person 🤣)
For Fin Varra, I know he likes Deirdre, but he oddly doesn't seem to show her much respect...? In that episode where he ruled Kells for a day, he kept directing everything he said to Angus. But he does respect her. He's also a bit... I don't want to say 'dismissive' of Rohan's whining, but he does seem more plot-focused that character-focused. Whenever someone's coming to ask how to move things along, he's on board to give answers. But wasting his time when he didn't summon them (like when Rohan and Angus brought the chesn with mini-Torc into Tir Na Nog), or coming in to complain about the plot is his least favourite thing. He likes action. That's probably why he didn't show Deirdre as much respect in the Switching Kingdoms episode: she was placating Fin Varra, which is boring, and Angus was inadvertently pushing the plot along, which might have been "insulting" but did deliver action.
Lugad pretty much just does whatever he's told, so I don't think Fin Varra has much interest in him (the 'placating' thing again). Ivar will go his own way when it serves him, but very often defers to the rules or traditions. Not as often as Deirdre, who's always having to be a Proper Princess™, but often enough. But he's not as easy to trick, which isn't as funny as it is with Deirdre.
Surprisingly, Garrett is constantly doing his own shit. I don't know if he'd suddenly play nice now that he's on the same team as everyone, but if he keeps up that hyper-competitiveness, he'd probably be a ton of fun for Fin Varra. So I think the list would be something like:
Garrett
Deirdre
Ivar
Lugad
With Rohan and Angus... 🤔
I think he actually likes Angus more. Angus doesn't ever go to Tir Na Nog unless he has to. Rohan'll check in for advice or just to chit-chat, it seems, so there's more chances for him to do the thing that almost got Angus turned into a Spriggen: correct Fin Varra on what the plot should be. The point would be in Angus' favour.
More than that, there's the difference in their shenanigans. When Rohan does something stupid, it's "I summoned a dragon" or "I accepted a duel." Simple and straightforward: here are the rules, go follow them. When Angus screws up, it's "Help I got framed for arson and now I need a lawyer" or "There's a 1000 year old wizard running around and mom said it's my turn to be possessed," or everyone's favourite: "I saw some gold in a field but the field was broken or something u_u." Way more interesting.
It's also harder to tell what Angus is gonna do. Rohan's very clear in his problem-solving: do the thing as fast as possible, even if it means skipping steps. Angus might act impulsively, or he might suddenly be cautious, or he might have a whole freaking strategy planned out. It kinda makes Angus the most fairy-like out of all of them, tbh. He's accidentally been speaking their language, or at least being crafty enough to endlessly entertain them.
So I think it'd be:
Garrett
Angus
Deirdre
Ivar
Rohan
Lugad
Rohan just wastes a lot of time struggling to do simple things. Angus wastes time doing elaborate things to get out of doing simple things, then goes and does the simple thing elaborately anyway. But I think Garrett's still at the top for the same reason Angus interacts with Garrett: he is so funny to torment.
Garrett just has to fight a little ghost for his test? Angus complains. Fin Varra's like, "no no dude watch this, it's gonna be hilarious"
Garrett and Ivar and Deirdre have to watch a baby dragon? Angus instantly stops complaining about getting herbs to laugh at them, and settles on Garrett.
The Dragonbow.
The
Dragonbow.
Angus even has the same kind of humour for watching people get put in their place. He's worried about Garrett and Rohan dueling, but when Rohan's in the water? Hilarious. Ivar's fighting Garrett in the throne room? Brings music. He himself is talking shit about girls net being as good at obstacle courses as boys? Admits it at the end. So just from what he thinks is funny (which we see more of), and what Fin Varra thinks is funny (which matches up even though we don't see as much), it stands to reason that Fin Varra also thinks Garrett is very fun to torment.
And now I'm wondering if maybe THAT had something to do with their tests. Fin Varra might have tested them to see a noble trait (ಠ_ಠ wait and then rohan became a prince, therefore angus = some sort of other prince confirmed), but maybe it was more like, "Idk, are you guys gonna be enough fun for us to watch?"
So Rohan being brave is good, because then they can make him do the dangerous parts of the plot. Ivar being loyal is good because that means he'll stay with the group despite his own quest. Angus being honest is good because that means his tricks are in the group's best interests. Deirdre being selfless is good because she'll find a way for the show to always go on. And Garrett being humble is good because LOLOLOL get wreckt garrett
Midar, meanwhile, who only appears when his plot's going on, is very much giving a "ಠ_ಠ this is a kid's show" opinion. So he's pretty annoyed by all of them for being dumb, but Maeve is so desperate for power that he can entertain himself by seeing what else she'll give up. Super mean, first of all, but that's gotta be why he's so quick to ditch her: the second she stops doing war plans and starts doing "I'm gonna marry the king uwu" plans, he's over it, and the second things get too 'expensive' for her to sacrifice anything else, what's the point of her? The fun with Maeve is what the next crazy thing she gives up will be.
Actually...
Another random thought.
I always wondered why Aideen was the one in the first episode who sent that dream to Rohan. Why her, exactly?
But if she's the one who's watching the show from her "own screen," and if Fin Varra seems to always know what the next part of the story is supposed to be before the Mystic Knights even ask, then maybe that was Aideen putting her thumb on the scale.
After all, Ivar already knew where the fairy ring was. Maybe Rohan and Angus would've let Ivar go if Aideen hadn't told Rohan about meeting a stranger, and then they wouldn't have found Tir Na Nog at all. And from there, maybe they go searching other, more hidden parts of Ireland, like wherever Lugad's been held. Being so big, and with Rohan thinking Draganta had to be some knight hidden away somewhere, everyone probably would have thought Lugad was Draganta instead. After all, they both have the Mark of Destiny.
It's sort of something I was hoping they'd talk about someday: if both Lugad and Rohan have that mark, how do they know it's Rohan? The only thing that clued Cathbad in was that Pyre breathed the mark of destiny onto the ground. But Cathbad's gotten signs wrong before, and the step after getting Pyre was finding Draganta. No one ever said how long after, and technically Lugad was found after. Maybe Pyre was just checking off a box or committing himself to the team, not necessarily branding Rohan. I mean, Angus eventually kinda tames Pyre, so it's not like the dragon only listens to exactly one person.
But with Aideen's dream in Rohan's head...
... maybe even Fin Varra was tricked - yes, tricked :3 - into agreeing that things pointed to Rohan, the kid who'd been a druid's apprentice for many years and not very good at it, more than to Lugad, the Half-Demon who can throw an army across a battlefield and was able to lead Maeve to victory as her legendary warrior.
Maybe - uhhhhh...
... maybe Rohan's not actually Draganta. uwu
Maybe that's why Aideen so delighted he gets named Draganta. If she hadn't interfered exactly when she did, changing the plot (remember: this is someone who actually changed her whole species to become a human!), the plot would've gone on to tap somebody else for it.
👀 That is extremely interesting to me.
I feel like I've said this before, but I'm saying it again: I love this show's characterization of King Fin Varra.
What an amazing choice all around. The whole first episode with his introduction, and especially his wrap-up with Deirdre's test in the second episode, probably had one line in the script to explain what Fin Varra's deal is:
Fucks with them. Endlessly. That's it.
I get that these are tests, and he doesn't know who these random people in Tir Na Nog are, but he picks the most deliberately dickish way of sending them along and just LOLs about it. One time, Rohan goes to him for help and to angst about how he can't be Draganta, and Fin Varra's like, "Dude, I'm eating pudding. Go save your friends or something."
Rohan's like, "D: Are they in trouble?"
And Fin Varra's like, "idk i guess - bro, fr, pudding."
And he doesn't even start with that!! He says it at the end of the conversation - just throws it in 'cause he really wants that pudding 🤣
Like - he isn't Cathbad. The stock "Wise Character" is already fulfilled. Cathbad gives his advice freely and as clearly as he can, and the only limiting factor is whether his magic is strong enough.
Fin Varra is limited by whether he's feeling the vibe or not.
Excellent.
In any other show, Fin Varra would be giving them cryptic messages and lessons to learn, and the Mystic Knights would rise to each challenge and see that they've been made better for facing it. That's the point of those cryptic messages: they're third-act revelations to solve the day. And because they help eventually, the cliché is to have the heroes fawn over what this mystery could mean.
But no! The Mystic Knights just get increasingly pissed off about it! They fucking hate his riddles, and Angus openly calls it garbage multiple times throughout the show. The second-last episode, Fin Varra gives them a clue to the vial with the potion that's going to save Rohan's life, and not only do Angus and Ivar not say, "Hm, what an interesting clue, we should reflect on this," but they never even go back to thank him for it! Stupid Garrett would've never revealed the potion without those words from Fin Varra!
The one time Cathbad tries to be like, "Ooh, I know what this riddle means," he ends the show by being like, "aw shit guys, i'm so sorry, i misunderstood what the riddle meant. i totally get it now though."
THEY ALL HATE IT AND IT'S SO FUNNY
And Fin Varra is so sick of them disrespecting his gifts - it's great, I love the dynamic, I wish we'd had more of the show just to show that.

hi can I request Nalu Au where Lucy is on the run from an arranged marriage with the Younger Brother of the Spriggen Emperor's younger brother and she run in to Natsu who is upset with his brother Zeref for signing him up for some nonsense he don't wanna marry some stuffy princess he would much rather hang out with his new weirdo buddy Luce (now that I say that I wonder if it will fit into a one-shot oh well plot sounds cute :3)
Hello, thank you for the request! It was a little tricky fitting it into a one-shot but I hope you like it! :D
“On the Run”
Rated T for language.
Summary: Lucy is on the run after refusing to marry some stranger her father had tried to set her up with. During her journey, she meets a boy named Natsu. Little did they know at the time that their lives were intertwined before they even met.
On the Run
Her arm stung as it scraped againsta branch blocking her way to freedom, blood trickling from the wound and mixingwith the sweat and dirt that coated her body. The sting was enough to distract her from her hunger, at least. She hadn’t eaten in days, and her stomach wasstarting to feel like it was eating itself. Her eyes were heavy with exhaustion and her legs were burning, screamingfor a break. But she couldn’t stoprunning. Not yet. Not until she’d crossed the border into theneighboring kingdom.
It had been two days since herfather had told her he had arranged her marriage with the younger brother of the Spriggan Emperor.
“You did what?” she choked out. Her throat felt tight, tears pricking her eyes. She knew the day would come eventually, butso soon? She was only sixteen! She couldn’t get married yet!
“Don’t make me repeat myself, child,” her father had replied. “TheSpriggan Emperor and I have arranged the marriage between you and his youngerbrother. You leave in the morning.”
“But… But I’m only sixteen! I-I can’t get married yet!”
“Lucy! You are the Princess of Fiore! You do whatever is needed for yourkingdom! You do not live the same lifeas everyone else. You are Lucky LucyHeartfilia and you shall act as such! Now go to your room. I have workto do.”
Later that night, she snuck outof the castle and began her escape.
Lucy thought she had run outof tears to cry, but it turns out she didn’t. Just recalling that night was enough to bring tears to her eyes.
Sheknew that her father didn’t care about her, not since her mother had died longago. But she never would’ve imaginedthat he would trade her away so easily. Sure, the marriage would bring in funds that Fiore needed, but whatabout her? Was her own life not important?
Swallowingthickly, Lucy shook her head. Now wasn’tthe time to think about such things. Sheneeded to focus on escaping.
Reachingthe border, Lucy noticed the knights on patrol. As Princess of Fiore, she could easily tell them to let her through. Word of her disappearance was probablyspreading through the kingdom, though. There was no way they would listen to her, not if they worked for herfather.
There wereonly a few people Lucy knew that were kind despite working for her father. She was particularly grateful for one of themright now, as they had taught her some fighting techniques even though herfather told her not to bother with such things. Sneaking through the shadows and approaching the guards, she gave fastblows to their necks, knocking them out cold.
Withthat, she was on her way.
As Lucyfirst crossed the border, there was no real difference between the FioreKingdom and the Alvarez Kingdom. Afterall, she was rushing through the forest. The trees all started to blend into the same blob of green at some pointduring her journey.
Nowthat she was on Alvarez soil, her father’s knights were unable to reachher. Sure, she had to worry about theAlvarez knights now, but she chose not to think about that.
Hersteps slowed, her legs feeling sluggish. She’d been running for days, only taking a few breaks. She hadn’t even allowed herself to sleep, scared that someone was going to whisk her away back to the castle.
Nowthat she was in somewhat safer territory, Lucy sat herself against a tree, allowingher back to lean against the bark. Ithad been a gruesome couple of days for her, and exhaustion was creeping its wayquickly over her body. Her eyes droopedto a close as she finally allowed herself to rest.
Natsusighed, shoving his hands in his pockets as he walked through the familiarforest. His steps were calm, as heknew there was no point in trying to escape his brother’s clutches. Well, clutches wasn’t exactly the rightword. It wasn’t like his brother was someharsh dictator. Zeref was a nice guy andwas just doing what he needed to for the sake of the kingdom, even if it meantarranging a marriage between him and some princess in Fiore.
Natsusighed again. He didn’t want to marryanyone, least of all a princess. Beingthe Prince of Alvarez, he had met plenty of snobby princesses in his life, allof them only caring about jewels, clothes, and who had the most money. What kind of life was that? He just wanted to have fun with his friendsand continue living the way he had been.
Butwhen Zeref asked him to marry the Princess of Fiore, saying that the kingdomneeded connections with the Heartfilias, Natsu found that he couldn’t sayno. After all, he’d been slacking on hisprincely duties his whole life, and even though the kingdom was doing relativelyfine, he’d still seen some of their citizens suffering. He wanted to end everyone’s suffering. So, he’d agreed to marry a girl he’d nevereven met despite only being seventeen years old.
Natsuwas pulled out his thoughts as he came across a girl sitting against a tree, her body covered in dirt and scratches. Looking at her arm, he could see dried blood stained over it. Concerned, he rushed towards her, nudging hergently.
“Oi, areyou okay?” he asked, hoping that she wasn’t dead.
Luckily, her eyes fluttered open and he was met with orbs of brown, rich enough to makehim feel like he was drowning in chocolate. The dreamy effect they had, however, died the moment she glared at himand pushed him away.
“Getaway from me!” she shouted, rushing to her feet. Her legs wobbled beneath her, giving out onher. In seconds, she was collapsing tothe ground again.
“Areyou okay?” Natsu tried again. This timehe didn’t touch her, not wanting to set her off again.
Thegirl narrowed her eyes at him. “What doyou want with me?” Her voice was raspy, herthroat dry. She hadn’t had water in solong.
“Huh?”
“Is itmoney? Well too bad. I don’t have any on me right now.”
Natsucouldn’t help but laugh. “Money? Nah, I think I’m pretty set on that.”
Thisonly made the girl fearful. “Th-Then… You want…” Her hands immediately covered her chest, informing Natsu what she was implying.
“What!? No way, you weirdo! I was just wondering if you were okay, sheesh! I saw you were bleeding and youlooked like you were dead, no offense.”
“Oh,” shereplied, though it was clear her suspicions hadn’t died down.
“Well? Are you okay?” Natsu asked for the thirdtime.
“I’mfine. Thank you. You may go now.”
“Huh? That’s it? You’re clearly not fine, you know.”
“Leaveme alone.”
Thegirl forced herself to her feet, leaning against the tree to steady herself. A vein ticked in Natsu’s forehead. Here he was trying to help this girl and shewas being a pain in the ass about it, not even sparing him a glance. Walking up to her, he quickly pinched hercheeks and tugged on them, receiving a yelp and angry stare in reply.
“Let goof me!” she shouted, tugging on his hair.
“Ack! You let go!” he shot back.
“Youstarted it!”
“No,you did!”
“What? You were the one that pulled on my cheeks!”
“Becauseyou were bein’ difficult!”
The twostared each other down, refusing to be the first one to let go.
“Alright,we’ll both let go together,” Lucy suggested. “On the count of three. One… Two… Three.”
Reluctantly, they both unhanded each other. Natsucrossed his arms with a sigh.
“So why’reyou all messed up looking?” he asked bluntly.
Lucyglared at him again. ‘Gee, thanks. Why don’t you just kick me while I’m down whileyou’re at it?”
“Yeah,yeah. Just answer the question.”
Lucycrossed her arms, studying the boy. Hehad onyx eyes, darker than the depths of the ocean. His skin was slightly darker than her own andhis arms were toned. Surprisingly, hishair was a light shade of pink. She’dnever seen a boy with pink hair before. For some reason, she found herself liking it, along with the rest of theboy’s features.
“I’mnot telling you,” Lucy finally answered, sticking her tongue out at him.
Natsugave an annoyed look. “Why not?”
“BecauseI don’t even know you. You could be somemurderer or something.”
“If I wasa murderer, wouldn’t I have just killed you by now? After all, you’ve been doing nothing butannoy me.” The girl smacked his arm, glaring at him, which only made him laugh. “What’s your name, at least?”
Lucybit her lower lip, wondering if she should tell the boy. He obviously didn’t recognize her as the Princessof Fiore by the way he acted around her. People were usually timid around her and treating her with the upmostrespect, not knowing that she just wanted to be treated like everybodyelse. It was a refreshing change havingsomeone pinch her cheeks or call her annoying or even bicker with her.
“I’mLucy,” she answered after giving it some thought. She wasn’t the only one in the world with thatname, she doubted he would know she was the Princess just from that.
“I’mNatsu,” the boy replied, giving her a fanged grin. Admittedly, it brought a flush to her face. He was pretty cute.
“Whatbrings you all the way over here, Natsu? Are you heading into Fiore?” Lucy asked, feeling more comfortable aroundthe boy.
“Nah,”he replied, shoving his hands in his pockets. With a shrug, he continued, “I just needed to get away for a bit. What about you?”
“I’mstill not telling you.”
“Aww, c’mon! I told you!”
Lucycrossed her arms. “Fine. You could say I needed to get away, too.”
“Fromwhat? Are you in danger? Is that why you’re covered in dirt andscratches?” Natsu asked.
“Iwouldn’t say I’m in danger…”
“Thenwhat?” Natsu sighed, quickly noticingthat Lucy wasn’t going to answer his question. “Alright, you don’t have to tell me anything, Luigi.”
“It’s Lucy!”
“But you should at leastcome with me to get some food and water. When was the last time you ate something? Your stomach has been growling this entiretime.”
Lucy’scheeks turned pink in embarrassment. “Shutup!”
Natsulaughed, grabbing her hand. “Come on. I’ll get you some stuff from my place. I’ll have to sneak you inside, though.”
“Don’tbother. I’m not going to go in somestranger’s house.”
“Alright, fine. I’ll bring it out to you then. Happy?”
Lucynodded, allowing Natsu to lead her towards his place. Judging from the way he dressed- baggy pants,a weird coat with only one sleeve, and a scaly scarf wrapped around his neck- sheassumed that he was in the lower to middle class.
Lucyglanced down at her hand, realizing that it was still locked with Natsu’s. A blush stained her cheeks, feeling thewarmth that radiated from the boy. He wasabnormally warm, warmer than anyone she’d ever met.
“I-Ican walk on my own,” Lucy said, tugging her hand away. She was too embarrassed to be holding hands witha boy, especially one as attractive as Natsu. She’d never even had the chance to talk to boys back in the castle. Everyone there was an adult.
Natsushrugged, letting go of her hand. Inseconds, she was wobbling unsteadily.
“Justlemme carry you,” Natsu suggested. “It’llbe quicker that way.”
“Carryme? No way! I-!”
Beforeshe could finish her sentence, Natsu had picked her up and thrown her over hisshoulder. Her face became a blushingmess as his hands were holding onto her upper thigh, dangerously close to herbum. She hit his back over and overagain.
“Put medown, Natsu!” she demanded.
“I toldyou, it’s quicker this way, Luigi.”
“Stop callingme that!”
Natsuchuckled. “Fine. But it’s still easier to carry you so stoparguing with me, you weirdo.”
“I’mnot a weirdo! You’re the weird one thatinsists on carrying me like this! Andwatch where you put your hands, you pervert!”
Natsublanched. “Oi! I’m not a pervert! Gray is!”
“I don’teven know who that is! Just put me downalready!”
Natsugroaned. Lucy was a lot of trouble, butalbeit amusing. He settled her back onthe ground, only to carry her princess style instead.
“No complainin’this time!” Natsu said, knowing that the blonde would have if he gave her thechance. “Just accept the help, damn it!”
Lucycrossed her arms, muttering, “Fine, idiot.”
Eventually,Natsu stopped in his tracks. They werestill in the forest and had been walking for over half an hour. Lucy was surprised that he managed to carry herthe entire way without needing a break.
Natsugently put her down.
“Youwait here,” he said. “I’ll go inside andget some food and water for you. Don’tmove from this spot, okay?”
“Alright,”Lucy replied. “…Thank you, Natsu.”
The boyflashed her a grin and ruffled her golden hair. “Don’t mention it, Luce!”
As hewalked away, Lucy stared at his retreating form. Her cheeks turned pink as she thought of thenickname he had given her. It was thefirst nickname anyone had given her. Itmade her feel normal.
“Luce, huh? I kinda like that.”
Just as promised, Natsureturned shortly, carrying a bag over his shoulder. Crouching in front of her, he opened it toreveal that it was stuffed with junk food and bottles of water. Not caring how unladylike she looked, the blondegrabbed a water bottle at the speed of light and chugged down its contents, wiping away the tiny drizzle that crept down the corner of her mouth.
Natsu’seyes were trained on the water that trickled from her lips. Her pink, plump lips to be exact. Realizing he was staring, he shook his headand focused on the food instead.
“I couldn’tget anything cooked, sorry. But I broughta bunch of my favorite snacks you could fill up on!” Natsu exclaimed with agrin. Pulling out a bag of chips, he handedit to her. “My friends say that theseare spicy, but I don’t think so.”
Lucynearly drooled seeing the bag of chips. Notonly had she not eaten in days, but she also was never allowed to eat any unhealthysnacks at the castle. Her father saidthat a princess was responsible for taking care of her body and making surethat it looked pleasing for suitors. Snacks, cookies, and any type of greasy food was forbidden in the castle.
Shescarfed down some chips, relishing in their flavor. Happy tears streamed down her face.
“Sogood!” she exclaimed, going in for some more.
“Aren’tthey?” Natsu replied, smiling as well. He was glad to see her give such a real smile. Something about her told him that she didn’tsmile all too often.
“Ooh,they are kind of spicy though,” Lucy said, guzzling down some more water. Her body felt better immediately. Thanks to Natsu, she could continue herjourney. She didn’t have a destinationin mind, but she knew that she couldn’t stay by the border. It was too risky there.
“I can’tstay here too long,” Natsu said with a frown. “I gotta go back in before my brother notices that I’m gone. I was supposed to go meet with someone yesterdayand I bailed.”
“Isyour brother strict?” Lucy questioned.
“Yeah, but he’s kinda gotta be strict.”
“Isthat why you needed to get away for a bit?”
Natsucrossed his arms behind his head with a sigh. “Yeah. I love my brother, but heset up an arranged marriage for me. Iain’t even interested in that sorta stuff but I don’t really got much of achoice.”
“Arrangedmarriage?” Lucy replied, her eyes growing wide. So Natsu came from a place of nobility? Only nobles and royals usually dealt with arranged marriages.
“Yeah. Somethin’ bout helping the kingdom. I love the kingdom too, which is why I agreedin the first place, you know? But to behonest, I really don’t wanna marry some snobby princess. I just wanna have fun with my friends.”
Lucy’smouth dropped on its hinges as she stared at the boy in bewilderment. “W-Wait a second… A-Are you the younger brother of the SprigganEmperor?”
Natsuraised a brow. “Yeah. How’d you figure that out?”
“B-BecauseI’m Lucy Heartfilia! I’m the one that youwere supposed to meet up with and marry yesterday!”
Natsu’seyes turned to the size of golf balls. “A-Areyou serious?”
“Yes! That’s why I’ve been on the run for the pastcouple of days! I don’t want to getmarried either!”
“Holyshit! What are the chances!” Natsuexclaimed with a wide grin. “That’s soweird! I-“
Hissentence was cut short as Lucy rose to her feet, backing away from him. The distrust in her eyes that had gone away duringtheir time together was returning.
“Lucy? What’s wrong?” he asked.
Thegirl shook her head, staring at him defiantly. “I-I don’t want to get married! Irefuse to! I won’t let you take me!”
Ignoringthe bag of food and water, the blonde turned on her heel and rushed in theopposite direction away from Natsu. Herlegs were screaming in pain, still exhausted from her previous days ofrunning. Her heart was thrashing aroundin her chest.
A warmhand encircled her wrist, pulling her to a stop.
“Letgo!” Lucy shouted, trying to pry her arm away.
“Coolit, Luce!” Natsu replied. “I’m not gonnaforce you to marry me, you weirdo!”
“Y-Youaren’t?”
“Noway! What the hell kinda person do I looklike to you?” Natsu let go of Lucy’swrist and put his hands up in surrender to try and calm her down. “Look, I didn’t wanna get married either, remember? You’re nice and all, but that’snot my thing. And if you didn’t agree tothis, then I definitely don’t want to.”
“…So… What now?”
Natsushoved his hands in his pockets and shrugged. “I don’t know. Do you have anyidea where you’re going?”
Lucyshook her head. “I don’t know anything aboutAlvarez and I don’t have anyone to take me in.”
“Do youwanna live in the castle? There are ashit ton of empty rooms nobody uses.”
“That’sa little risky, don’t you think?”
“Iguess that’s true. What about I get themoney so you can buy a place of your own?”
Lucy blinkedonce, then twice. Was he serious? “You would go that far for me?”
Natsushrugged, a lopsided grin resting on his face. “Yeah, why not? We’re friendsnow.”
The wordfriends had Lucy’s heart skipping a beat. She had made friends with some of the employees in the castle, but noneof them were her age. Natsu was thefirst friend she had made herself. Shenever believed she would have the opportunity to do such a thing.
Lucytackled Natsu in a tight hug. “Thankyou, Natsu. For everything.”
The boywas taken aback, his cheeks turning pink. “D-Don’t mention it, weirdo.”
OnceNatsu returned from grabbing some money at the castle, the two were on theirway to find a place for Lucy to live. Theyavoided anywhere in town since Lucy was a runaway. It took a while, but eventually they found asmall cottage in the woods, which Natsu had purchased immediately.
Lucy awedat the sight of her new home. It wassmall, especially coming from her castle, but it had everything sheneeded. Working appliances and a bathtubwere all she needed to make this place a home. Thanks to Natsu, she could do everything she dreamed of doing in the castle. She could make her own meals, be asunrefined as she wanted, and live a life of freedom. A life worth living.
Tearspricked her eyes as she turned towards Natsu.
“Thankyou…” she breathed out.
Natsusmiled back at her. “I keep tellin’ yato quit thankin’ me, you weirdo. I gottahead back now.”
Lucyfrowned. “Already?” Though, when she lived in the castle, shewasn’t allowed to go outside at all, unless she was meeting some other richnoble or something. Natsu’s freedomsalready extended much further than hers did.
“Yeah. I gotta let Zeref know that I’m changing mymind about an arranged marriage,” Natsu replied.
“You cando that?”
“Huh? Of course. It’s not like he forced me or anything.”
“Whatchanged your mind then?”
“Seein’you running and trying your best to live the life you want,” Natsu answeredsincerely. “I don’t to be forced intoanything either, so it’s time I tell Zeref that.”
“Good luck,”Lucy said with a frown. “Am… Am I ever going to see you again?”
“’Courseyou are, weirdo,” Natsu answered, ruffling her hair. He laughed as she pouted and swatted his handaway. “I’ll try to visit every day.”
“Really,I can’t believe you’re doing all of this for me.”
“Hey,thanks to you I don’t have to get married either. Ain’t my thing.”
Lucysmirked. “Really? You can’t see yourself getting married ever?”
Natsu’seyes trailed over her, a blush making its way over his face. “N-No way! Marriage and mushy, lovey-dovey shit is not for me.”
“Whateveryou say.”
The twosmiled at each other, their hearts light and excited about their budding friendship. Saying their goodbyes, they didn’t feel toosad, because they knew that they were going to see each other again, as fate clearlywanted them to meet in the first place. After all, they were set up in an arranged marriage, still somehow foundeach other despite Lucy running away, and became friends through it all eventhough they weren’t going through with the marriage. Fate wanted their lives to intertwine.
Andwhile neither of them didn’t want marriage at the time, little did they know thatyears later into the future, they would be walking down the aisle togetheranyways, but not as Lucky Lucy Heartfilia and Prince Dragneel. No, they would come to take their relationshipto the next step as just Lucy and Natsu.
Hope you liked it! :D Thank you again for the request! :D
