Bridging Heaven and Earth: The Architectural Dialogue Between Berlin and London
The narrative linking Berlin and London through their respective architectural landmarks, the swimming pool at Spreewaldplatz and the Millennium Dome, forms a compelling tale of cultural and architectural dialogue. This story weaves in the influences of Constantin Brancusi’s minimalist forms, Renaissance depictions of divine baths, and the iconic structures from the Festival of Britain, setting the stage for a modern exploration of earthly and celestial aspirations.
The Architecture of Flight and Reflection
Brancusi’s "Bird in Space" sculptures, with their sleek, soaring forms, encapsulate the essence of flight and transcendence. These sculptures strip away the particularities of individual birds, focusing instead on the universal notion of flight itself. This abstraction can be seen as an influence on Christoph Langhof's design for the swimming pool at Spreewaldplatz, Berlin. The chequerboard cylindrical pedestal and golden cigar-shaped columns evoke Brancusi’s vision, transforming a utilitarian structure into a symbol of elegance and ascension. Similarly, the columns are reminiscent of London's Skylon, an iconic structure from the Festival of Britain, which also echoed the clean, upward lines of Brancusi's work.
Bath of Venus: A Renaissance Connection
The Renaissance paintings of the Bath of Venus or Psyche often depicted idyllic, otherworldly settings where divine figures were engaged in earthly pleasures, symbolizing a bridge between the terrestrial and the divine. This theme is mirrored in the architecture of both Berlin and London. The Spreewaldplatz swimming pool, situated on the site of a former train station, becomes a modern-day bath of Venus, a place where the boundaries between the ordinary and the extraordinary blur. Similarly, the Millennium Dome in London, with its vast, encompassing structure, creates an almost celestial space on earth, inviting visitors to engage with a sense of wonder and exploration.
Berlin and London: A Dialogue of Architectural Ideals
The architectural legacies of Berlin and London are deeply intertwined, particularly through their post-war redevelopment projects. The Festival of Britain, spearheaded by Sir Hugh Casson, aimed to rejuvenate British morale and showcase modernist design, much like the reconstruction efforts in Berlin aimed to rebuild and reimagine the city. The Skylon, with its futuristic design, paralleled the optimism of Brancusi’s sculptures and symbolized the aspirations of a nation looking forward to a brighter future. The Dome of Discovery, another highlight of the Festival of Britain, represented an exploration of knowledge and discovery, its vast dome symbolizing the sky and the heavens.
In Berlin, the construction of the Spreewaldplatz swimming pool in the 1980s by Christoph Langhof can be seen as part of this broader narrative of urban renewal and cultural dialogue. The pool’s design, with its nods to Brancusi, the Skylon, and the Dome of Discovery, serves as a local counterpart to the Millennium Dome’s global aspirations. Both structures, in their respective cities, represent a synthesis of artistic inspiration and practical function, creating spaces that encourage contemplation and transcendence.
A New Skylon by the Millennium Dome
Envisioning a new Skylon by the Millennium Dome would symbolically connect these two cities even further, creating a modern icon that bridges the past and future. The original Skylon, a steel cigar-shaped structure, was a beacon of hope and modernity, while the Dome of Discovery symbolized human curiosity and the quest for knowledge. A contemporary Skylon could serve a similar purpose, acting as a monument to innovation and resilience in the face of global challenges, while a new Dome of Discovery could symbolize the ongoing pursuit of knowledge and understanding.
Heaven and Hell on Earth: Architectural Realities
Through their architectural achievements, Berlin and London engage in a conversation about the authority of reality on earth. The Spreewaldplatz pool and the Millennium Dome embody both heaven and hell, reflecting human aspirations and the complexities of urban life. The pristine, reflective surfaces of Brancusi’s sculptures and the Renaissance depictions of divine baths find their echoes in these modern structures, which strive to transcend their materiality and offer glimpses of a higher reality.
In conclusion, the architectural interplay between Berlin and London, influenced by Brancusi’s minimalist forms, Renaissance ideals, and the legacy of the Festival of Britain, creates a rich narrative of cultural and spatial exploration. By reimagining structures like the Skylon and the Dome of Discovery in contemporary contexts, we continue this dialogue, celebrating the power of architecture to shape our perceptions of heaven and hell on earth.

One day after storm Xavier, an uprooted tree decorates the Spreewaldplatz. As i walk by, a group of children and parents alike are gathered around the roots, most of the kids have this surreal neon-yellow glowing cones in their hands.
