Bug of the Day
Was a weirdly quiet night at the lights the other night - hot all day, pre-storm, barometric pressure physically palpable, but then I found this big boi in a corner of my porch usually reserved for spiders (and things that the spiders have eaten). This is a spotted Apatelodes moth, Apatelodes torrefacta, and I have not seen one in my yard since 2018. Very cool. These moths used to be in the silkworm family (Bombycidae) but have been separated out into their own "American" silkmoth family, Apatelodidae.

so I spent a lot of time deliberating whether or not I wanted to share this but eventually I thought
fuck it, why not
here’s my first ever attempt Fakemon, Toxelodes
it’s inspired by the Spotted Apatelodes / Dragon Moth, specifically the larva, although it’s more loosely based since the larva are kinda just fuzz worms and I couldn’t really figure out how to adapt that directly into a pokemon design without it being boring, so I ended up taking the fuzzy aspect and the antenna design of the larva and adapting it onto a more moth-like design. feels more like how a pokemon would be anyway, they aren’t always so direct with the inspirations. Its shiny is meant to reference how they’re commonly coloured though.
this is my first ever fakemon and i’m still kinda learning art as a whole so i’m aware it’s probably nothing amazing, but i’m happy with how the lil guy came out and wanted to share anyways :>
It does have an evolution in the works and it will be Bug / Dragon- that’s where the whole idea started actually- but art block hit me like a motherfucker while I was working on it lmao
also the stats were a complete afterthought I have no idea how to properly design a stat spread lmao just ignore those

did some digging (it's long but it's worth it trust me)
The Spiny Bush Viper:
So I saw one of these and had to dig deeper because I wasn't even sure if it was real??? Like that just looks like a crystal with eyes??? But they are real, and they're amazing, so here are: The Ambush Bugs
The Horny Toad:
and how could I forget the subject of my name my beloveds my little pacifists my tiny artichokes my meow meows my toothless little bastards my beautiful babies my dear armoured derps: pangolins
The Thorny Devil:
Here are some nicely patterned beetles that are named after lotr dragons:
Dragon-tailed Butterflies:
and how could I forget the dragonfly:
Coronated Tree Frog (look! it frog! with hornn?????)
This is a dragon tree, I think it is very cool and I will be using it as an art ref from now on (loooookk at the braaaanchessss):
Dragonfruit come from a different tree, but they're still cool:
The Spotted Apatelodes Moth:
The Dragonhead Caterpillar:
and, my new transition goal (after becoming a floating mass of eyes and wings and rings and micheal distortion) may I present the Dragon-head Lanternbug:
weird fucking animals in the sea tier list
big fin squid. what in the actual fuck is this?
2. phronima. inspired the face hugger from alien
3. big red jellyfish (thats its scientific name....)
4. squid worm???????? wtf is this monstrosity against god? (i love it)
5. frilled shark....just why?
6. barrel eye fish. its cute i guess but it looks so sad like a renaissance painting:( hey little guy cheer up you have lots of fans x
7. chained cat shark so cool but why tf is it in our ocean
8. japanese spider crab (i love this freaking thing but even a fan like me has got to admit this looks like a dark souls boss you'll die to 500 times before looking up various elemental tactics on reddit and gamefaqs.
9. bristle worms. they are sturdy to me ♥
10. blobfish...shes not that weird to me the thing thats weird is that people apperently eat it??? but folks will eat anything i swear to god. leave it alone its just a weird guy!!!!!!!
11. goblin shark. presented with no further explination. shark evolution is so fucked man
12. sixgill shark. he's back and hes coming in hot. i love his goofy ass
13. whatever in gods green earths name this is (black swallower, shes soooo real)
14. is it a tier ranking without me bringing up 12 squids? i dont think so. this here's a vampire squid, miss, a fine specimen for sure
15. gulper eel. ???
#animals#marine biology#thalassophobia#the moray dragon eel and the dragon-head lanternbug have some kickass character design#bet there's a tragic backstory there too

🦋🍂 MOTHVEMBER day 15-16 🍂🦋 Spotted apatelodes is the most intimidating moth in my mothvember list, but that's just their look. They just want to eat some leaves! I like that they have this almost scorpion-like tail, it makes them look like some kind of chimera dragon. I tried to make it look like it belongs to a medieval manuscript art of a new dangerous creature

@yasuoyamada submitted: All other moths I’ve submitted have been ones I’ve raised so I figured I’d submit ones I found in the wild! First is a Spotted Apatelodes Moth, then a Yellow-striped Armyworm Moth and a Giant Leopard Moth caterpillar (who is hibernating in my fridge right now, named it QT!). All were found in Pennsylvania.
Ah! Some really nice finds. Especially the apatelodes, since I don’t think I’ve ever had one submitted! Maaaybe one other. I must share a photo of their caterpillar because they’re Good:
Yes! Incredible! A muppet. Photo by maryshew
Also please tell QT I love them when they awake.
