Tom McCarthy's 'Spotlight' gives you an old investigative journalism without subscribing to clichès and sensationalism. Its strength lies on its simplicity, character arcs, and how it discloses the church's cover-ups. It makes you feel disgusted that leads to reflection of one's faith (especially if you're a Catholic), and the same time you are eager to know more facts. The film avoids moral discussion, instead it focuses on probing the scandal tolerated by the church. It is hard to do their job especially if you are going to expose a deeply entrenched and powerful institution like the Catholic Church, with readers in a town that has strong Catholic citizens, and if you identify yourself as Catholic (or used to be). Brilliant acting from the cast and a good paced storyline makes this two hour film fly by. This film is a must see for any person who likes documentary films.

That was his response when I asked him what advice he would give an aspiring writer tonight. Seeing @SpotlightMovie as a freshman journalist at the University was among my greatest inspirations toward investigative reporting. Never guessed that three semesters later, I would talk to the man who led that historic team. What a time to be a writer. Thank you to @ONANevada for this evening's experience! S P O T L I G H T 'Brave' is the one word that describes this movie. An authentic reconstruction of the brave work done by the journalists at the Boston Globe to expose the paedophile practices of several Catholic priests and how their actions were concealed by the church. Not the most cinematic or captivating film by any means so I do question it being overrated but nonetheless a worthy watch! #DiZzeLsVERDICT : 7/10 FQ: "I was eleven.
