🎯 FanDuel Settles MLB Union Lawsuit Over Use of Player Likenesses

The Major League Baseball (MLB) players union has resolved a lawsuit against sports betting company FanDuel, which was accused of using the names and likenesses of hundreds of MLB players on its platform without authorization.

On Friday, a FanDuel representative announced that the company and the union had reached a confidential licensing agreement. In a New York federal court filing, the players union stated that it had agreed to dismiss the claims with prejudice, preventing them from being refiled.

Representatives and legal counsel for the union did not immediately comment or provide further details.

The union has also filed similar lawsuits against other sports betting companies, including FanDuel’s competitor, DraftKings. Those cases remain active.

The lawsuits, originally filed in September, alleged that these companies "blatantly" infringed on the rights of nearly all active MLB players by using their names, images, and likenesses on their platforms without proper licensing.

"For professional athletes, protecting the commercial use of their names, images, and likenesses is a critical way to safeguard their significant career investments," the players argued.

FanDuel had not formally responded to the claims in court prior to the settlement.

Separately, the National Football League (NFL) players union has an ongoing lawsuit against DraftKings, filed in August, accusing the company of misusing NFL players' likenesses in non-fungible tokens (NFTs).
