Heat wave set to scorch the Southwest, with temperatures possibly reaching up to 120 degrees
A potentially record-breaking heat wave is anticipated to push temperatures across the western U.S. into the triple digits as it intensifies this week, prompting warnings and the establishment of cooling shelters throughout the region.

From southwestern Oregon and California to parts of Arizona and western Nevada, millions of people will be under excessive heat warnings from Tuesday through Friday.
The highest temperatures are expected in Furnace Creek, Death Valley National Park, where readings could reach 120 degrees. In southern California’s Palm Springs and Coachella Valley, afternoon highs might hit 118 degrees.
Federal forecasters predict that major cities, including Los Angeles, Phoenix, Las Vegas, and Portland, Oregon, will exceed 100 degrees. Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass has announced that emergency personnel are preparing for the heat wave, and cooling centers are being set up across the city.
"The homeless, elderly, children, and individuals with health conditions are at the greatest risk for heat-related illnesses," the Los Angeles weather service office posted on X. "Daytime temperatures ranging from 95 to 105 degrees will become common away from the coast."

A heat wave in the Southwest is typical for this time of year. Heather Zehr, a senior meteorologist at AccuWeather, noted that searing heat is not unusual for Southern California, western Nevada, and southern Arizona in September.
"September is generally quite hot in this region due to its southwestern location and dry climate. Peak average temperatures often occur at the end of August and the beginning of September," she explained.
Zehr pointed out that this heat wave will be significantly milder compared to the record-breaking heat wave in July that swept across the Southwest. That earlier heat wave saw temperatures in Phoenix reach 118 degrees, afternoon highs in Las Vegas hit 120 degrees, and peak temperatures in the Palm Springs desert area soar to 124 degrees. This week, forecasts suggest that each of these areas will experience temperatures several degrees lower than those seen in July.
The situation is different in the Northwest.
Zehr explained that southwestern Oregon usually starts to cool down at the onset of fall as Arctic air intrusions move into the region. However, due to the heat wave, daily temperature records across the Willamette Valley, including cities like Portland and Medford, could be threatened, with forecasts predicting temperatures could climb to 105 degrees.
"This is somewhat unusual for them," Zehr said, referring to the heat wave affecting southern Oregon.
How to Stay Safe During a Heat Wave
To protect yourself during a prolonged heat wave, experts recommend avoiding direct sunlight, drinking plenty of water, and wearing sunscreen or sun-protective clothing if you need to go outside.

Seemal Desai, president of the American Academy of Dermatology, advised staying indoors between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., when sunlight is most intense. It's important to drink water rather than relying solely on caffeinated beverages or sports drinks, which may contain additional chemicals and additives.
Kelly Olino, assistant professor of surgical oncology at Yale School of Medicine, emphasized the importance of recognizing serious signs of heatstroke or heat-related illness, such as nausea, vomiting, and lightheadedness.
The National Weather Service also issued advisories reminding people to check their vehicles for children and pets before leaving them unattended, as car interiors can quickly reach deadly temperatures.
How Extreme Heat Can Affect Your Health
While warm weather can enhance mental health by encouraging outdoor activities and increasing vitamin D levels, extreme heat can have detrimental effects.
"Heat has been linked to irritability, agitation, anxiety, and cognitive impairment," Susan Albers-Bowling, a clinical psychologist at the Cleveland Clinic, told USA TODAY in June. "Research also indicates that during heat waves, there is a noticeable rise in suicide rates, domestic violence, substance abuse, and crime."

Albers-Bowling added that high temperatures can disrupt sleep and diminish the effectiveness of certain medications. Additionally, extreme heat can lead to hormonal changes, such as elevated cortisol levels (the stress hormone), and can impair alertness and cognitive function.

Are the surgeons at OHSU using these machines on children? The answer appears to be yes. In an interview, Peters acknowledged that, in recent years, he has seen “a lot of adolescents presenting for surgical intervention” and that he has performed genital surgeries, including the robot-assisted vaginoplasty, on “a handful of puberty-suppressed adolescents.”
Following the French Revolution, the British philosopher Edmund Burke signaled a note of caution, warning that the desire for progress, uninhibited by convention, can lead to disaster. Revolutions in the name of lofty ideals—liberty, equality, science—can yield their opposites. A revolution in our time merits similar consideration: the transformation of human sexuality and, in particular, the rise of so-called transgender medicine.
The gender surgery program at Oregon Health & Science University, a public teaching hospital in downtown Portland, provides a productive tableau for analysis. The program is led by Blair Peters, a self-described “queer surgeon” who sports neon-pink hair, uses “he/they” pronouns, and specializes in vaginoplasty (the creation of an artificial vagina), phalloplasty (the creation of an artificial penis), and “non-binary” surgeries, which nullify the genitals altogether. Peters and his colleagues have pioneered the use of a vaginoplasty robot, which helps efficiently castrate male patients and turn their flesh into a “neo-vagina.”
Business is booming. According to Peters, OHSU’s gender surgery clinic has “the highest volume on the West Coast,” and his robot-assisted vaginoplasty program can accommodate two patients per day. His colleague Jens Berli, who specializes in phalloplasty, boasts a 12- to-18-month waiting list for a consultation and an additional three- to six-month waiting list for a surgical appointment.
This openness marks a revolution in manners and morals. In the past, transgender theorists acknowledged that their surgical transformations were disturbing and anti-normative. “I find a deep affinity between myself as a transsexual woman and the monster in Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein,” wrote the male-to-female transgender theorist Susan Stryker in 1994. “I will say this as bluntly as I know how: I am a transsexual, and therefore I am a monster.”
Such views no longer prevail. Today’s transgender medical providers conceal the barbarity of their practices in euphemisms. They are not postmodern Dr. Frankensteins but providers of “life-saving, gender-affirming care.” The model patient is no longer the middle-aged autogynephile but the troubled teenager, sold a new identity, mediated through technology, that promises to resolve deep-seated sexual anxieties—and advance the political cause of transgender activists.
The dismal metaphysics that lies beneath OHSU’s castration machines is academic queer theory, which holds that human beings are mere vehicles of “performativity” and that their nature can be molded and reshaped at will. In other words, the queer theorists argue, there is no “human nature” that cannot be transcended or obliterated through the application of culture and science.
OHSU’s castration machines must be seen in this light. The university’s doctors and surgeons believe that they can harness the advances of modern medical science to sublate the basic categories of human sexuality and replace them with a variety of synthetic forms: the artificial phallus; the artificial vagina; the dual phallus-vagina; nullification of both.
The technique for the robot-assisted vaginoplasty is gruesome. According to a handbook published by OHSU, surgeons first cut off the head of the penis and remove the testicles. Then they turn the penile-scrotal skin inside out and, together with abdomen cavity tissue, fashion it into a crude, artificial vagina. “The robotic arms are put through small incisions around your belly button and the side of your belly,” the handbook reads. “They are used to create the space for your vaginal canal between your bladder and your rectum.” The illustrated surgical literature is a catalog of horrors—peruse at your own risk.
This procedure is plagued with complications. OHSU warns of wound separation, tissue necrosis, graft failure, urine spraying, hematoma, blood clots, vaginal stenosis, rectal injury, fistula, and fecal accidents. Patients must stay in the hospital for a minimum of five days following the procedure, receiving treatment for surgical wounds and having fluid drained through plastic tubes. Once they are home, patients must continue on transgender hormone treatments and manually dilate their surgically created “neo-vagina” in perpetuity; otherwise, the tissue will heal, and the cavity will close.
One question provokes particular dread: Are the surgeons at OHSU using these machines on children? The answer appears to be yes. In an interview, Peters acknowledged that, in recent years, he has seen “a lot of adolescents presenting for surgical intervention” and that he has performed genital surgeries, including the robot-assisted vaginoplasty, on “a handful of puberty-suppressed adolescents.” Peters further stated that OHSU is “just putting [its] first series together” related to adolescent vaginoplasty and that “no one has published on it yet.” (When reached for comment, OHSU declined to respond.)
All this grisly detail is obscured through manipulative language. To the general public, Peters and his colleagues present their case in therapeutic terms—gender, affirmation, trauma, care, health, joy—and wrap themselves in the movement’s light blue, pink, and white flag. By comparison, the old transgender theorists were more honest. They saw themselves in Frankenstein and, in their struggle to overcome natural limits, brushed against them.
We can return to Burke for a final word. Besides his analysis of revolution, Burke’s other major contribution to the history of ideas was his theory of the sublime. The sublime, he argued, did not stimulate love, but terror. The vast darkness, the brewing storm, the dangerous tyrant—all elicited a complex reaction of astonishment and fear, especially that of human finitude.
Transgender surgery provokes a similar sentiment: awe of the mechanical mastery, horror at the raw human barbarism. But when the haze of emotions passes, the true nature of these interventions is revealed—they are a work of pure hubris, part of a scientific revolution that has sought to transcend all moral bounds. The revolution’s works, like Dr. Frankenstein’s, will inevitably leave behind a profound human tragedy.

born and raised in parton, he is the only child of the hale family-- an eccentric and albeit mixed family of views. his mother was a part-time nurse, a woman who believed wholeheartedly in holistic and natural medicine in unison with western. she insisted on teaching her son both practices, while encouraging a full exploration of self and interests to better himself. his father was a strict “man’s man”, insistent that men needed to be tough, and emotionally hard. the weird amalgamation between the two was silas.
he was a quiet child who kept to himself, mostly, the kind that his father stuck in every school sports who awkwardly stood out on the field ( even though he was having fun participating ), finger shoved into his face about the ways of life, all the while his mother stuck him in music lessons and taught him the basics of medicine.
from this, silas became a collector– not of material items, though many came with the title-- but rather he collected skills and knowledge, priding himself as jack of all trades. football, the violin, suture a wound, build a cuckoo clock from raw materials, a little bit of everything under his belt with a craving to always learn more.
limiting himself to one full time occupation would’ve been too much of a commitment. so he dabbled, and the lack of direction wasn’t highly praised by either parent ( although his mother was more understanding ), but as a collector he indulged--and collected-- in various majors from various colleges and basically never stopped.
he left parton in his early twenties after his parents died in a questionable house fire and moved from city to city since. the longest he stay was in portland, oregon. he enjoyed it, especially loved the liberal way of life but the crime rate was tiring. five years ago he moved back to parton, new york and has been enjoying since, for as much as one can enjoy new york.

We didn’t go to North Dakota, choosing South Dakota instead for our eastbound trip.  And we didn’t realize it until it was too late, but we completely forgot about visiting Rhode Island. Sorry, Rhode Islanders!  Ironically, it is the only state that actually has the sound of “road” in its name.
Of course, as I asked in one of the FAQs... Does It Really Count As “Visiting” A State If You Only Drive Through A Little Piece Of It?

All Olympia Gymnastics Center, the world renown Hawthorne academy, recently finalized a $1 million settlement with World Championships silver medalist Mattie Larson, her attorney confirmed to the Southern County News Group.
The settlement stems from Larson’s lawsuit in Los Angeles Superior Court against AOGC and its directors Artur Akopyan and Galina Marinova that alleged their treatment of Larson led to her being sexually abused by former U.S. Olympic and USA Gymnastics national team physician Larry Nassar. While Akopyan and Marinova agreed to pay Larson $1 million in June the deal was only recently completed.
The suit alleged All Olympia and Akopyan and Marinova  “fueled an abusive, harassing and degrading environment.” That environment “allowed, concealed and promoted abusive behavior” by Nassar, former U.S. national team directors Bela and Martha Karolyi and USA Gymnastics. Specifically the suit alleged Akopyan and Marinova “directed degrading, abusive, and harassing comments and actions towards” Larson.
AOGC is shutting down its Hawthorne location according to a Nov. 3 letter from Akopyan and Marinova to AOGC gymnasts, parents and coaches. The closing and the Larson settlement mark a fall from grace for AOGC that few could have imagined in the early years of this decade.
AOGC gained global recognition with the emergence of Larson and later McKayla Maroney, the 2012 Olympic champion whose celebrity transcended the sport, only to now find itself near the center of the Nassar sexual abuse scandal that this week led the U.S. Olympic Committee to take the first step toward stripping USA Gymnastics of its national governing body status.
Akopyan and Marinova did not respond to a request for comment.
The USOC’s bid to revoke USA Gymnastics’ NGB status and the AOGC case, however, are just two strands of a multi-layered scandal that is being played out in courtrooms and board rooms from coast to coast.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Indianapolis office on Tuesday refused to accept a subpeona requesting records in three-time Olympic champion Aly Raisman’s lawsuit against the USOC, according to a person familiar with the case.
Even as USA Gymnastics faces decertification and potentially hundreds of millions in legal settlements and the FBI comes under increasing scrutiny for its potential role in the cover-up of Nassar’s abuse, a number of high profile gymnastics coaches and officials continue to rally around the NGB and polarizing figures like Akopyan and Marinova.
“It is a sad day when Southern California looses (sic) a gym that has been so instrumental for the development of gymnastics,” Carol McIntyre, president of the So Cal Women’s Gymnastics Coaches Association, wrote in an email Monday to the Southern California gymnastics community. “I can’t imagine how devastating this is to Galina.
“…With USA Gymnastics being in the hot seat once again, Lets work together and show the pride and Class Southern California is famous for. We have always been the leaders of the country. Lets rise above the negative perception that has been bestowed on our beautiful sport by no fault of our own. Lets all remember we are competitive, but we are colleagues first. Athletes will come and go but we will all remain.
“Lets band together and show the country we will not buckle under the pressure. We will hold our heads high and continue to show this country and community true leadership.”
McIntyre did not respond to a request for comment.
John Manly, an attorney for Larson and dozens of other survivors, said McIntyre’s comments were “emblematic of the culture of USA Gymnastics where athletes come and go sort of like cattle and that’s how they look at them. It’s an abusive culture.”
“People,” Manly added, “don’t pay a million dollars if they didn’t do anything wrong.”
The Justice Department’s inspector general’s office is investigating how the FBI handled the Nassar case.
Former USA Gymnastics chief executive Steve Penny consulted with W. “Jay” Abbott , the special agent in charge of the FBI’s Indianapolis office as early as July 2015, a month after Penny was first informed of allegations that Nassar had sexually assaulted gymnast Maggie Nichols at a U.S. national team training camp at the Karolyi Ranch.
In a July 29, 2015 email to Abbott, Penny wrote “Below are two pieces of our communication strategy moving forward. We wanted to share them with you for your quick review to be sure they are consistent with FBI preferences. Please let us know if you concur with our messaging.”
Then USA Gymnastics board chairman Paul Parilla, an Orange County attorney, and Scott Himsel, an attorney representing USA Gymnastics, were copied on the email.
Abbott replied to Penny later that day “certainly respond as you deem appropriate.”
A day later Penny emailed Abbott again.
“I am so sorry to continue bothering you with this issue. … As you can see below, we have a very squirmy Dr. Nassar. Our biggest concern is how we contain him from sending shockwaves through the community. In our conversations with Scott, we are trying to make sure any correspondence with him is consistent with FBI protocol. Right now we are looking for a graceful way to end his service in such a manner that he does not ‘chase the story.’”
Penny was forced to resign under pressure from the USOC in March 2017. He was arrested last month after a Walker County, Texas grand jury indicted him on felony evidence tampering charges. The indictment alleges Penny was involved in the removal and destroying and/or hiding of medical records from the Karolyi Ranch in central Texas, the longtime training site of the U.S. women’s national and Olympic team.
Both Penny and Amy White, the national team manager for USA Gymnastics acrobatic gymnastics program, have both indicated they will exercise their Fifth Amendment right against self incrimination in depositions related to Raisman’s lawsuit against USA Gymnastics and the USOC. The suit is scheduled to go to trial in U.S. District Court in San Jose in February.
USA Gymnastics board of directors, under pressure from the organization’s insurance carriers, has weighed filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. Such a move could establish a bar date in which future claims against the organization could not be filed after a certain window. A Chapter 11 filing would also lead to an automatic stay on all proceedings and litigation, including discovery, against USA Gymnastics .
USA Gymnastics, which has tax exempt non-profit status, reported $34.47 million in revenue for the fiscal year 2016, according to filings with the Internal Revenue Service. The organization also reported $11.8 million in assets, $8.7 million in liabilities.
The National Gymnastics Foundation Inc., created to supported charitable and educational programs for USA Gymnastics, listed $16.27 million in assets in 2016 with only $788 in liabilities.
A Chapter 11 filing could also help the USA Gymnastics head off, at least temporarily, the USOC’s decertification process.
“If I was USAG and I wanted to stop decertification by the USOC I would go (to bankruptcy court) because it prohibits you from proceeding,” said attorney Jim Stang, who has written extensively on bankruptcy issues and served on the creditors committee in 13 child sexual abuse cases. “The bankruptcy court judge is like a traffic cop. Should I allow this decertification to continue? Or should I let it go for now or just stop it or keep the red light on? Is there something that can be worked out to keep USAG’s value (to raise funds to pay creditors)? What is the value if USAG is decertified?”
Establishing a bar date under Chapter 11 would also give USA Gymnastics’ insurance carriers “a tremendous amount of certainty,” Stang said.
“You’re going to get (in bankruptcy) court a deal that’s hard to get in state court,” he said.
The move could also enable the USOC as a related party to obtain a channeling injunction against future claims even without actually declaring bankruptcy itself.
Under this scenario the USOC would contribute to a settlement fund in exchange for being released from future claims.
Channeling injunctions have been issued in all 13 child sex abuse cases Stang has been involved with since 2004.
The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Portland, Oregon filed for Chapter 11 in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in July 2004 just hours before the scheduled start of a civil trial in which survivors who alleged they were sexually abused by a priest sought $160 million in damages. Other sexual abuse claims had already cost the archdiocese $53 million and its “major insurers have abandoned us,” Portland Archbishop John G. Vlazny wrote at the time of the bankruptcy filing.
“The pot of gold is pretty much empty right now,” Vlazny said
Michigan State reached a $500 million settlement with more than 300 of Nassar’s survivors in May. Nassar was a longtime member of the university’s sport medicine staff.
Under the terms of the settlement $425 million was paid to 332 known Nassar survivors with an additional $75 million placed in a trust fund for future claimants.

Somehow, I always knew I would be a doctor in a small town. I grew up in a logging town and went to school in Forest Grove, Oregon. We had a very free lifestyle and could do whatever we wanted. We had no restrictions. We’d hike all over. My father was a wonderful parent who took me hunting and fishing all the time. He was an accountant and my mother was a schoolteacher. I got into sports in high school: football, basketball, track and field. We had a great baseball team, so I eventually dropped everything but that, which got me a scholarship to college, and then went on to University of Oregon Medical School in Portland.
I did a Good Samaritan residency in Portland, then went to Lebanon to partner up with a family practitioner who did surgery. We ran a surgery practice together for 25 years. We were on call pretty much 24/7, and by the time he retired, I realized I was pretty burned out too. People would see my car at my house, and just stop by. I even served as mayor for a while. I helped turn that town around.
Things changed when I went to a meeting in New Orleans and met a man who ran a business hiring doctors out to cities that needed them. It was really nice. I still loved medicine, and this way I could practice where I liked and not be on call all the time. My wife and I drove our RV all over the country—the Great Lakes area, the Midwest, the Southeast, the West coast, anywhere from two weeks to six months in each place. I met so many wonderful people—many I still communicate with today.
We had a grandchild, so the pressure was on to get back home. A job appeared in Salem, so I took that and stayed there seven years. I finally retired in 1994, at 52. I got a call from a pastor who needed help setting up a hospital in Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe), so I went there, started the lab and X-ray unit, and did some surgery. After I left, I knew there’d be a full-time nurse and doctor flying in twice a week, but sadly the hospital got leveled by the Rhodesian Army. It was crazy. Campus Crusade needed me in Mongolia to help set up churches and village medical units. So I went there. And Romania.  
I met my wife Sally 70 years ago. She was a bratty teenager and we’d always tangle, but then she grew up and I started walking her to school every day. We got married right out of high school. Everyone thought we were nuts, because I was going to med school. But we have been married 56 years, and we have two daughters, who are still close by and very successful. She lives here in Garden Way, too.
Our secret was that we agreed we would stick it out no matter what. When things got tough, we’d sit down and say, “OK, do you want to throw it in, or stick it out?” And I’m glad we stuck together. We did a lot of the work together, especially in the orphanages of China and Romania. It was heart-wrenching to see families who couldn’t take care of their children and had to put them into orphanages.  
Occasionally I had the chance to see some of my patients whose lives I literally saved in Lebanon, though I didn’t realize how much they cared about me. It really gave me some warm fuzzies, and I do regret not appreciating them more at the time. I get emotional when I see them now. And I have a difficult time going to a doctor now—all they want to do is put in the time and get off work. I insist they treat me like a colleague and that’s not easy to find.
I still look for ways I can help people, anywhere I can.
