All Might rose in a time of fear, when people needed to believe that things would turn out alright in order to move forward, and so he became a symbol of peace—his strength was a comfort to everyone. Because of him, society was able to come out of a state of chaos and stabilize.
But Midoriya was born in the era of complacency that followed. If he became the same symbol of peace that All Might was, then society would stagnate. Another strong OFA user would just reassure society that the heroes have everything handled, that they don’t need to intervene, and that they didn’t have enough power to help even if they wanted to.
That’s why his loss of OFA (a terrible thing in itself!!) is going to work out for the ultimate good of everyone. It actually frees Midoriya to wield the power he was born with—the ability to inspire other people to act. I don’t think it’s an accident that he was quirkless in his rising chapter. When people see Midoriya running to save, even without any power, they loose any excuse for complacency they had. They feel compelled to do the same.
That power—the connection of hearts that formed OFA in the first place—is greater than any quirk. It’s what makes Midoriya the greatest hero.

Maximizing Cricket Performance: Off-Season Training Strategies Backed by Science

The off-season presents a unique opportunity for cricket players to refine their skills, improve their fitness, and prepare for the upcoming season. However, with limited access to outdoor facilities and match practice, it's crucial to utilize this time effectively. By incorporating insights from sports science, cricketers can maximize their off-season training and gain a competitive edge.
Skill Acquisition in the Off-Season
One of the biggest challenges in off-season cricket training is maintaining and improving skill acquisition in an indoor setting. Research suggests that varying practice routines and incorporating challenges can lead to better retention and transfer of skills.
Key Strategies for Skill Acquisition:
Mix It Up: Avoid repetitive drills and incorporate random and variable practice. Alternate between different skills, drills, and game scenarios to challenge the brain and improve adaptability.
Focus on Deliberate Practice: Encourage training that pushes players just beyond their comfort zone, promoting self-organization and skill development.
Utilize Small-Sided Games: Incorporate modified games that emphasize specific skills, such as indoor cricket or "nets" sessions with specific targets.
Simulate Game Conditions: Use different types of indoor surfaces to simulate varying bounce and pace, adjust lighting to mimic day-night conditions, and introduce pressure situations to prepare players for match scenarios.
Strength and Conditioning
The off-season is an ideal time to focus on strength and conditioning, building a solid foundation for the upcoming season. Prioritize exercises that mimic cricket-specific movements, such as squats for batting power and core work for bowling stability.
Mental Skills Training
Mental skills are crucial for success in cricket, and the off-season provides an opportunity to develop these skills. Utilize video analysis to study opponents, refine strategies, and improve decision-making. Incorporate visualization techniques to help players mentally rehearse skills and game scenarios.
The Inner Coach
Developing an "inner coach" can help players become more self-aware and independent learners. This involves teaching players to analyze their own performance, identify areas for improvement, and make adjustments without relying solely on external feedback.
Transitioning to the Outdoor Season
As the season approaches, gradually increase the amount of outdoor training to allow players to adapt to different conditions and refine their skills in a more game-realistic environment. Schedule pre-season matches against strong opposition to test skills and strategies under pressure.
By incorporating these research-backed strategies, cricketers can optimize their off-season training, improve their skills, enhance their fitness, and develop their mental game. This will not only prepare them for the upcoming season but also contribute to their long-term athletic development.

Ohh, is there any more about the sacrificial bullfights? Are there costumes?
It has no costume whatsoever and in fact stands out as one of the Least costumed rites there are. The fighter is completely nude save for carrying a pure white cloak (which is used to provoke the bull in the process of tiring it, and is only actually Worn at the end of the rite should the fighter survive). They're also painted blue. Looks like this.
The skimmer-woman necklace is for good luck, he's going to need it.
It's one of the much older, more localized traditions that has been integrated into the Faith of the Seven Faced God. It originated in the Ephenni tribe and variants on the base theme (a ritual fight to the death between a young man and a bull) have been practiced for at least 900 years.
The purposes of the original rite were very different from its modern incarnation, and were linked to Ephenni kingship. The fighter was always an unwed Ephenni prince, the bull would be an established domestic bull that has sired many offspring. The fight between the prince and the bull was a symbolic 'killing' of his predecessor, initiating the boy into manhood and signalling that he is ready to take the former king's place. It was not a yearly occurrence and was instead an aspect of coronation, with each transition of power beginning in the new year (marked by the planting of maize, the staple crop). Ephenni kings were also high priests and (among many other functions) spiritually protected the crops, the prince's first action after his initiation would be to bless the freshly planted maize.
Over centuries, this practice became Directly associated with the wellbeing of the maize via animal sacrifice, and then was forcibly removed from its kingmaking functions altogether when the Ephenni were occupied by Imperial Bur and their kings killed. The practice of bull-fighting for exclusively corn-blessing purposes continued during and after Burri occupation, and would ultimately be brought into the broader Wardi milieu when Ephennos, Odkotonnos, and Wardin allied and conquered most of their neighbors, forming the beginnings of Imperial Wardin.
Its present incarnation is a yearly rite, observed at the festival that celebrates the planting of the maize (still a staple crop in most of the region). It is functionally a Fertility Rite, intended to bless the crop and observed for signs of how this year's growth will turn out, but it's also highly celebratory and spectacular in nature, not just a solemn religious occasion. It could be argued as a form of human sacrifice in that it is Very dangerous and not infrequently fatal for the fighter, and the death of the human is an acceptable outcome that can impart the same blessings.
---
The fighter is always a 'beardless youth' (usually 16-20), chosen from the unwed sons of noblemen. The fighter will have been trained as a warrior (default for most boys, especially nobility) and is chosen for bravery, health, and strength. But he is Highly unlikely to have experience as a bullfighter (at best, may have rehearsed with domestic cattle) and will rely on instruction and good luck. He is also given a drink of consecrated strong liquor immediately beforehand, which does have ritual elements but serves the practical purpose of lowering the probable teenager's inhibitions and making him less fearful.
The fight takes place in farmland surrounding the city, in a fenced off ring. The fighter and bull are placed together in the arena. He is armed with only the cloak and the dagger. He will have to evade the bull's attacks (using the cloak to goad and direct its charges) and gradually wound it until the animal is weakened from blood loss and exhaustion, and a killing blow can be made. The movements and the behavior of the bull are used to discern signs for the future of the crop- a more aggressive bull is a good sign (indicating a strong, healthy crop and good harvest), a bull that spends most of its time attempting to flee or behaves indifferently is a bad sign.
If all goes right, the fighter will manage to injure and tire the bull until it can be dealt a fatal wound. The rite is now successful. Its throat is slit, and the fighter soaks his cloak in its blood. The rest spills into the earth and nourishes the farmland. The fighter is garbed with the cloak and garlanded, and led on khaitback out through the fields to bless the crop while the festivities kick off. He will preside over the rest of the festival in a place of honor, and is celebrated by the attendants. The bull is cleaned and cooked whole for the feast, and the fighter distributes its meat to high ranking attendants (often giving out the best parts to specific people- family, public figures, women he is courting and/or flirting with, etc).
If the fighter is killed, he has ritually taken the bull's place. The rite is now successful. His blood is spilled by attendant priests and his cloak is soaked, the rest nourishes the earth. The bull is restrained, garbed with the cloak and garlanded, and led in procession back out through the fields, blessing the crops in its passing. It is then released among free ranging cattle (often in estrus at this time of year) in hopes it will mate with some, which is highly auspicious and additionally blesses the herds (and eventually makes up for the loss of the bull's meat at the feast). The fighter has died a good death and his blood has blessed the crop, he is given a lavish public funeral and cremation, and the women in attendance honor him with wailing.
The rite fails if it ends in a 'draw', where one is unable to kill the other. Most frequently this occurs when the fighter is non-mortally wounded and the bull ceases its attack. This failure is not regarded as catastrophic or dooming the crop, rather a warning that proper actions have not been taken and amends must be made. The bull is released without ceremony, a yearling domestic bull is sacrificed in its stead (without the additional crop blessing procession, and its body is cremated rather than butchered and served), libations of its blood and wine are poured onto the crops, and the fighter takes no further place in the festivities.
---
This ritual has been heavily reinterpreted to fit with the Faith of the Seven Faced God. It is framed as a rite to Mitlamache and officiated by Galenii high priests. It exclusively uses wild aurochs rather than domestic bulls (as a representation of Mitlamache and of wild fertile earth on which the crop grows). It still occurs in the farmland of the city of Ephennos as part of a seasonal maize festival, but is considered to bless all of God's lands (not just the Ephenni crop). This festival occurs regionwide, but the bullfighting at Ephennos is the only Official enactment of this rite (other towns, cities, and villages often include nonfatal sport bullfighting with domestic cattle in their festivities instead).
The original meaning of the blue body paint has been lost to the ages, but are reinterpreted through the lens of the contemporary faith by being made with blue amenchalme (amenchalme is a consecrated paste of ground maize, salt, wine, and oil, in this case mixed with water and blue pigment). This blue amenchalme is the same material Galenii priests wear on their foreheads during rites (you've seen a couple drawings of Tigran wearing these).
The older practice of butchering and eating the sacrificed bull is retained in its modern incarnation, which is a major outlier among most other official sacrifices in the Faith (in which certain parts of the body may be saved as holy relics, but the flesh and blood is NOT eaten and IS the offering). The spilled blood specifically is framed as the sole offering, and the death of the bull and survival of the boy is an indicator that it has been accepted and that its body may be given back to nourish the people directly.
Full nudity (which is taboo in most contexts) is also retained from the older practice, in keeping with other attemptively transformative rites involving the human body being made intentionally vulnerable via nudity. The fighter being seen fully naked cements the notion that he has been temporarily Transformed in triumph over the bull, granted the ability to impart blessings and lead the ceremony when his body's integrity is restored and clothed in the bloody cloak.
Notably, in spite of being ostensibly a human sacrifice, fighters who die in this rite are not considered sacrificed saints (a status generally relegated to those killed in the dry season offering), though are still believed to have died a good death and granted a place of honor in the afterlife among other esteemed dead.
#Had to edit this way late because I habitually wrote 'father' twice in the early history section. Early Ephenni kingship passed from#uncle to nephew#The bullfighting Sports have some interesting costumes though (aside from bull leaping which is performed in a loincloth)#Bulldancing involves a very flashy outfit with an elaborate cloak. I have a wip going for that#Bull wrestling is generally performed in the same shirtless with trousers set up you see in khait wrestling (but unlike khait wrestling#involves actually fighting the eponymous animal rather than another guy On an animal)#imperial wardin

i really love fics where there is clearly a fully-realized world underpinning the story but it isn't overexplained—the author relies on you to intuit the necessary background from the information presented in the foreground. i'm therefore about to overexplain the figure skating au to within an inch of its natural life.
this is tagged role reversal and that was the basic premise—au where jannik is the one from a country with a recent record of success and carlos is from the middle of the fucking wilderness. tennistically skateistically speaking.
fs fans will know that the italian skating federation is right on the border of powerhouse status—it's not quiiiite big 3-4 (russia, canada, us, arguably japan/france) but it's real close. their greatest success hasn't necessarily been in the men's discipline but should a generational talent come along all the elements would be in place to immediately launch him into the stratosphere from the comfort of almost-home. jannik's nearly-lifelong training base—the icelab in bergamo— is only about 100 miles from sexten as the crow flies, just a bit farther than the distance between murcia and villena. the sacrifice is his mother driving him 3 hours there and back on saturdays, then later on boarding in bergamo during the week and going home on the weekends. a small metaphorical price to pay to train at an isu center of excellence from literal childhood.
(so why did it take jannik so long to break through? jump consistency—he lost his jumps after a massive growth spurt and, as the headcase references indicate, even after he got them back he stayed spooked for a long time. the real bergamo legacy is his pure and flawless skating skills, good enough that even the heavily foreshadowed simone-fixing-carlos montage won't be enough to catch up. and he'll still have those skills after his body can't hold up to the jumps any more, just as carlos will still have unmatched performance quality. in a way their late-career competitions are going to be much more interesting than their peak.)
meanwhile, spain. if you don't know much about figure skating i cannot emphasize the extent to which, on the figure skating map, spain is nothing and nowhere. …or was, until out of the blue they produced world champion and olympic bronze medalist javier fernandez. javi falls neatly in between the juanki and carlos generations, so i've split him in two and made juanki the freak pioneer, the one didn't quite beat the structural disadvantage, and carlos the freak protege, the one who will.
juanki… oh juanki. comment referring to him as the local narrative punching bag couldn't be more correct. imagine if irl juanki was exactly the same except born in a country where no one played tennis. this is what it's like to be figure skater juan carlos ferrero, a special talent in an esoteric sport with no resources whatsoever.
the only way juanki would have been able to achieve what he did in the late 90s/early 2000s is to have begun training abroad no later than his mid-teens. you can draw the obvious corollary wrt his family history. something he would have deeply conflicted feelings about, even today, manifesting in a total commitment to his life's mission: a real purpose-built training rink in his part of spain. a mission that is much, MUCH more quixotic than a tennis academy. the most he can dream of is to provide a good environment to learn the fundamentals, help young skaters start competing, bring in guest experts and host training camps and maybe, just maybe, someday, this will help a kid with promise make a real go of figure skating. and then he gets carlos.
right person, right place, right time. carlos is able to launch himself as a competitive junior skater while training in his home country, propelled by juanki's resistance to the idea that the only path to success must be for a child to leave their home and family + learned experience that it's possible to come from a humble skating background and still medal at the top. this is very good for carlos at first. this is less good for carlos later.
namely i think that when carlos first begins to advance there's an element of… idealism? pride? naivete? in how juanki understands his own career, that serves as a early blind spot. like, yes, world bronze, european champion… under the 6.0 system, courtesy of a certain amount of patronization. the judges are happy to reward this obvious talent who may not have the technical chops but has a real feel for the ice, a special quality to his performance… to a point. but that bronze was his ceiling. he was never going to be in the running for gold next. (which doesn't matter, since in 2004 he got the first of several injuries and by 2006 it was all over.)
20 years later, this is not that different from the judging that lifted carlos to the euro gold. here is an obvious talent performing the skate of a lifetime and landing quads. when the faves flop—casper ruud that was your title for the taking!—you bet he's going to get rewarded. but you only get that shock and awe bump once. (also those quads were sooooo underrotated. his jump technique is Not Good.) afterwards, he's going to suffer from an expectation gap. seventh at the olympics is a much more realistic assessment of the tier he'll find himself in…. unless he makes a big change.
for non-fs fans… it's hard to explain all the factors that influence a supposedly objective score, but suffice to say there are many, many intangibles including but not limited to politicking and packaging. politicking = networking and advocacy on your behalf by your federation and/or coach. a federation like spain has zero power, so it would all come down to the coach. packaging = your combination of music/costume/choreo style, your image on the ice. does it look good and do you sell it well. a coach who hasn't been engaged at the elite senior level for 18 years is going to struggle because what worked in 2003 isn't necessarily going to work in 2022. and part of coaching is understanding what judges want and giving it to them.
(you know juanki's still resisting the music-with-lyrics rule change so hard. he might understand it but he does NOT like it.)
juanki's a fast learner but he's all on his own out here—trying to coach carlos and teach regular lessons and keep the rink operational. he's doing everything he possibly can to revive all his old skating connections from 2003 and leverage them on carlos' behalf but that's only a drop in the bucket. he could drop all his other obligations and devote himself solely to leveling up as an elite senior coach for carlos, but it still might not be enough, fast enough. and it would kill the rink.
deep down he knows that he should have pushed carlos to make the switch immediately after that breakthrough season. he just resisted it for a long time. he doesn't want carlos to leave! he cares about him so much! how could he not, this magic gift from the fates, the consolation and the reward and the meaning to everything he's worked for over the last 17 years of his life! like. jesus. i am actually making myself feel bad thinking about this but it has to happen and juanki knows it has to happen. carlos fought him for MONTHS before accepting it, and it should go without saying that the major reason he did finally accept it was—in every sense of this word—the carrot. lmao.
(what finally pushed juanki over the line? well, it hurt to see carlos' scores that post-euro season, when he knew what they really could be. he loves carlos. he wants more than anything for carlos to be the skater he has the potential to be. and also oh idk maybe there's a new relationship in his life that's helping him face up to some of these emotional challenges. examines nails.)
juanki's still going to be listed as part of carlos' coaching team, carlos is still going to spend the off-season training in valencia, the odds are good that juanki's going to be the one putting the cry in kiss&cry when milan rolls around. i think the carlos experience does inspire him to commit to high-level coaching and he becomes a fantastic and highly-regarded junior coach, with young skaters from across europe choosing to train with him. the rink in valencia gets a major upgrade and it might not ever be an isu center of excellence but it's a beloved community institution and a source of local pride. HAPPY ENDING!!!!
…got sidetracked there. anyway, the point of this story is: what if jannik was the one who desperately wanted to connect with someone on his level, only he didn't know it. until it happened.
#which of these two sports is my real area of expertise. we'll just never know.#my fellow fs fans will know there's some simplification here but im sure they can fill in the blanks#btw toreador at worlds is going to become a carlos fandom classic. the program is a cheesy compositional mess but#the performance is soooo exuberant and expressive and even POIGNANT. everything that makes his skating compelling.#bc it's his goodbye to spain and juanki. yk.#'STOP SAYING GOODBYE THIS ISN'T GOODBYE' ok carlitos you know what i mean#meanwhile jannik's going to end up leaning hard into ultra-contemporary aesthetics that his angles and height naturally enhance#is simone the italian benoit richaud i mean he's not NOT...#ficposting#fs au

random throwback to fabio's response to casey saying he should've been black flagged for the whole open leathers situation
#'he is at home and he likes to fish' is truly superb#//#brr brr#//ht#//currt#i was reminded of this in a very roundabout way... seeing a social media graphic celebrating fabio making q2#which is like. yes that's nice. but that's also inherently extremely depressing lbr#and i was kinda thinking how... look obviously people don't ignore it and yes the novelty has worn off after last year#but it feels like what's happened to fabio should STILL be getting more attention than it is. like it is a major injustice#that also no past stars of the sport are regularly having hot takes about! they mostly just ignore him!#i do sometimes link casey and fabio in my head. roughly the same age gap to the all-time-great hazing them during their rookie seasons#the only riders within their manufacturers able to wring performance out of their bikes over the course of several seasons#who suffered a competitive decline as their manufacturers went the wrong way#now obviously casey's 2010 is nowhere close to as abysmal as fabio's 2024 but. y'know. and at least casey got to leave for pastures greener#anyway given all that. it is funny that like their one significant interaction is fabio dismissing casey as a fisher#which ironically is of course a deeply casey line. casey had a whole thing about how retired riders should maybe know to stfu#“i have seen the real face of some with whom i had a good relationship” EXTREMELY casey line#and thus the cycle of life continues#(though casey was obviously right here lol)#ofc the main difference between the pair of them is that fabio at heart is a lover and casey is. not that
