There’s a fox about tonight

I can hear his rough voice screaming

I’m afraid of what he’ll say to me

Should his bark-song pick up words

I do believe he’s getting closer

Rustlings in the bramble bushes

Announce his soft approach

~ Gold of Fools ~ He tried to exchange his woes for a dram! All his slights, damned; all his wrongs, righted! All his plights washed away by a one night stand. Whiskey, the mistress, seductress, sitting on the bar, cracking the rocks on which she lounges Nothing but a curse, someone whispers - words dying on inebriated breath. A jar of falsehoods, golden like a new day, promising much, yet delivering nothing, save for the mundane, save for disaster and pain, save for some of the same, but worse. The gold calls to him, like the Sirens of yore, trembling fingers reach for the cold shell of glass, fingers expectant and afflicted trembling with delight, trembling with plight, wetting their tips on condensation in flight. The gold, cold in the mouth, warm in the throat, hotter in the chest, slithering bellywards, combusting, creating fires - some burning bridges. Some burning composure. Some burning optimism, some burning life, quick, like the Wick of a flaming candle. Ah, Whiskey, the food of unfulfilled pleasures.
