A Halloween Confession - B. Jacob
[Requested by Anon] Can I request a college AU with Jacob where he's your (not so) secret admirer and he plays a song for you in front of everyone as a confession at Halloween party or something, since it's spooky season~ 😊
Summary - (College AU) Jacob confesses to you at a Halloween party...
Warnings - None
Genre - Fluff
Jacob.
You had known him ever since your freshman year. God, you were so nervous that day. The first day your parents left you alone in a whole new city. You were terrified of being alone. Looking around the room where orientation began, you noticed many of the people there had already paired off with someone. It made you feel even more lonely, desperately looking around for another person who was in the same situation as you. And then there he was. He asked if the seat beside you was taken... and you two have been friends ever since.
Since you had the same major, you two chose the same classes to be able to see each other more. Each semester was the same. It was no secret to anyone that Jacob liked you. And it’s not like you weren’t completely whipped for him, too. You couldn’t help the little glances you stole of him whenever the two of you studied together.
The only reason you had never done anything about it was because, well, you just didn’t know how. You were scared of ruining a good friendship, but you couldn’t stand being away from him. Even a moment away from him already caused you to miss him. It was cheesy, yes, but you couldn’t help the feelings you had for him.
You were sitting in class, barely listening to your professor as he lectured to the class. You looked down at your laptop - the only thing typed into the word document was “notes.” You sighed, considering closing the document altogether.
Looking over at Jacob, you saw him diligently taking notes. Looks like you were going to have to ask to borrow them for the quiz on Monday. He saw you looking over at him.
“I noticed you weren’t paying attention,” He laughed in a whisper. “You can use mine, I basically wrote down everything he said.”
“Thanks,” You said to him with a grateful smile.
You couldn’t tell him that you weren’t taking notes because you were distracted by thoughts of him. You only frustrated yourself further. Fantasizing would never be as good as the real thing.
“Are you going to the Halloween party tonight?” He asked in between taking more notes.
“Yeah, are you dressing up?” At this point, you weren’t even trying to pay attention to the lecture. All of your attention was now on Jacob.
“I could. Wanna match?”
You laughed. “Depends on what you have in mind.”
“Hmm...” He thought for a moment. “Okay - You wear yellow, I wear red - mustard and ketchup.”
You had to use all your willpower not to laugh out loud in the quiet class. “Is that really what you want?”
“Do you have any better ideas? I mean the party’s tonight.”
“Well... a vampire’s easy, you just need dark clothes and fake blood.”
“Do you have fake blood?” He looked at you, now distracted from the lecture as well.
“I do.”
“Do I want to know why you have fake blood?”
“For times like these,” You leaned back in your chair, smiling at him. “Come to my dorm before the party, I can help you.”
“Okay,” He was almost giddy at the fact that you had agreed to match your costume with his. Not only that, you would be helping him get ready before. He already wished for the time to go by faster.
. . .
Your face was inches away from his as you applied the fake blood. He was seated on your desk chair as you leaned down in front of him. The feeling of your hand on his face made his heart skip a beat, and he nervously avoided your gaze, trying not to give away his feelings for you just yet.
“Oh my gosh! You guys are so cute in your matching costumes!” Your roommate commented as she walked in the door to your shared room. She took out her phone while you two weren’t watching, taking a picture, knowing full well of both of your crushes on each other. She was dressed in her own costume, a witch.
When you finished, you stood back, trying to see if you had to touch up a bit before you guys left.
“How does it look?” Jacob asked you.
“Like real blood!” You smiled at him, closing the cap of the bottle, putting it away. “Ready to go?”
“Yeah, we’re already an hour late,” Your roommate commented, grabbing her things.
Once at the party, you guys stuck together for most of the time. Your roommate also stayed around the two of you, casually talking to friends who would come up to the three of you. Jacob was acting a bit nervous, which caught your attention. The party was being held at his friend’s apartment. It didn’t seem like the place he would be nervous. In fact, he probably knew more of the people at the party than you did. You didn’t know what was wrong, but you tried your best to talk to him, hoping to calm his nerves a bit.
“Hey, is everything okay?” You asked him in private as your roommate spoke to someone else.
“Yeah, of course, why do you ask?”
“You seem a bit nervous...” You looked over his face, he was clearly lying to you. You didn’t understand why he wouldn’t just tell you what was wrong, but you decided to just move on.
Jacob’s friend came up to the two of you, clapping him in the back. “Hey, you ready, man?” He asked Jacob. He nodded and his friend walked off, saying that he was going to get things set up.
“Ready for what?” You asked Jacob.
“Um, I’m going to perform a song I wrote,” He said, his nerves seemed to get worse.
“That’s awesome, I’m sure you’ll do amazing,” You encouraged him.
“Everyone! Jacob is going to play a song!” His friend came back, all the stuff set up in the living room.
Jacob got applause from the group at the party. Most of the people were drunk, or still speaking to their friends quietly, so there was very little reason for Jacob to be too nervous. Most of the people at the party won’t even remember this in the morning.
He leaned close to your ear, “I wrote it for you.” He walks off to the guitar that was set up at the front, a few feet away. You were in complete shock at his words. Your roommate walked closer to you, seeing that you were acting strangely.
“You good?” She asked with a laugh, taking a sip from the cup in her hand
“Jacob... he-”
“He’s going to play, yeah!” She looked over at where he was standing, looking like he was ready to begin. He started playing the song. It had a sweet melody, slowing down the party a bit. Everyone seemed to be really enjoying it.
The people at the party were oblivious to the fact that the song was meant for you, except your roommate who noticed the way he was looking at you as he played. It felt like the people around you disappeared, the only person you saw was him.
Everyone clapped at the end of his performance. His friends were trying to tell him how impressed they were with the song, but he was trying desperately to walk over to where you were.
You were talking to your roommate when someone tapped your shoulder. You turned, seeing Jacob, who was finally able to get away from his friends’ praises.
“Jacob!” Your roommate said. “You were great out there!”
“Thanks,” He said, barely listening to her, clearly wanting to talk to you alone. The way he was looking at you got your friend to take the hint and she left the two of you alone to talk.
“So... what did you think?” He asked, nervously glancing at you and the people around you.
“It’s a beautiful song... you’re extremely talented,” You smiled at him. He was a bit nervous by your reaction. He nodded, looking down at the floor momentarily.
“I like you, too, Jacob.”

Klainetober day 27
Prompt 27: Candy Corn
Summary: Quinn hosts a party, Kurt pines for his best friend, and Lauren is right afterall
Notes: If I wrote glee, this would probably be somewhere in season 2, I guess.
AO3
Kurt was thankful he wasn’t hosting this party. When Quinn volunteered her empty house for a Halloween Bash, he was relieved. Not that Burt and Carole wouldn’t have let the New Directions spend a night watching scary movies in the basement (they absolutely would have) but because Kurt and Finn won’t be on clean-up duty for once. He was also excited for Puck’s promise of alcohol. Though Kurt had bad experiences in the past with drinking he was determined to give it a second chance and limit his intake this time. He would pace himself and hope to God he wouldn’t embarrass himself...again.
Some of the glee club was doing shots (Brittany, Santana, Puck, and Artie) but most were content with the apple cider and caramel vodka mixture Quinn and Mercedes had made. In fact, they enjoyed it so much, the two girls were in the kitchen stirring up a second batch. Having volunteered to be a designated driver, Finn was content with his handful of candy corn.
Unsurprisingly, Rachel had brought her karaoke machine and attempted to convince Finn to sing a spooky duet with her. Except, she was slurring her words and kept saying “spoopy.”
Mike and Tina were half-dancing and half-making out in the center of the living room. Sam was in deep conversation with Blaine and a few other Warblers about the latest Star Wars film.
Lauren came over to where Kurt was standing by the food table.
“Why so glum?” she asked, nudging his shoulder.
“I’m not glum.”
“Are you just a sad drunk cause I don’t need any crybabies tonight?”
Kurt remembered Finn telling him Lauren was an angry drunk. She had torn Puckerman a new one at their last drunk get together.
“No crybabies here,” he swore, “just wishful daydreams.”
His eyes wandered back to Sam and Blaine. They were sitting awfully close together. If Kurt didn’t already attempt to hit on Sam, he’d assume Blaine was interested in the blond. Unfortunately, for both himself and Blaine, Sam was very straight (or so he claimed, Kurt still thought no straight man would bleach his hair) and dating Quinn.
“Lingering feelings?” Lauren questioned, following Kurt’s gaze.
“For Sam?” Kurt clarified. “No, I’m definitely over that crush. It was headed nowhere just like all my other ones.”
“Eh, boys suck anyway. Who needs ‘em?”
Kurt grabbed a soft pretzel and bit off a piece.
Lauren kept talking, “You really have no type then.”
“Excuse me?”
“You’re excused.” Lauren took a sip of her cider from an orange solo cup. “From Gigantor to Southern Surfer to Curly Q. You’ve got me stumped, do they have anything in common?”
“Being nice to me, I suppose,” Kurt told her. “Finn eventually helped with the bullying, Sam was willing to sing a duet with me until Finn warned me not to, and Blaine is like my best friend.”
“You need higher standards, Hummel.” Lauren shook her head. “You can’t just fall in love with nice guys. You need someone who actually cares about you. Who loves you.”
Even tipsy, Lauren gave good advice.
“That’s the thing, I think maybe…” Kurt trailed off.
The front door burst open and in came the remaining Cheerios and football players. Behind them, half of the McKinley population.
“I don’t care what anyone says, there’s gotta be more than one gay at McKinley. You and I, Hummel, are about to find him.”
For the next hour or so, Lauren dragged Kurt around the house and made obscene comments about the party-goers. Kurt’s pretty unwilling to talk to any boy Lauren deems “team gay.” Not because he doesn’t trust her input, he does, it’s just Kurt doesn’t want just any boy, he wants Blaine. They ultimately end up in the living room again and Kurt is back to trying not to be caught watching his crush.
Only Sam is still on the couch talking to Blaine.
“If I get blondie to leave, will you swear to jump in there and talk to him?”
“He’s my best friend. I don’t have trouble talking to him,” Kurt told her.
“Liar. If you didn’t have issues talking, you’d be dating.”
Without another word, Lauren gets Sam away from Blaine. Kurt doesn’t want to know what she said to make him jump up like that but he’s glad for the opportunity. Even though he didn’t really promise Lauren anything he jumps into Sam’s vacated spot on the couch.
“Hi Kurt, enjoying yourself? I feel like I haven’t seen you all night.”
“I was with Lauren,” he explained, “she was attempting to find another gay boy who goes to McKinley to prove me wrong.”
Before they get past how-do-you-dos, Sam is standing on top of a table shouting “Cops!”
At first, Kurt is confused by this but then it all clicks and he understands.
“We gotta go,” Kurt said, grabbing Blaine’s hand.
In no state to drive and thankful Finn had parked a couple of blocks away, Kurt dragged Blaine out the back door and ran. When it came to underaged high school parties, shouting ‘cops’ was like someone shouting fire. That is to say: chaos.
Once the house was no longer in sight, the boys walked to a nearby park to catch their breath.
“Who knew McKinley’s parties were so exciting?” Blaine said.
“I certainly wouldn’t,” Kurt replied. “I thought Quinn was limiting it to glee people.”
“Sam told me she’s already prepping for prom queen. Something about throwing good parties and earning favor with the popular kids.”
Kurt nodded. That sounded like Quinn. Unforgettable parties were a great way to be remembered.
Blaine took a seat on one of the swings. “What were you saying back at the house about finding another gay boy?”
“Oh.” Kurt hoped the cold would explain his red cheeks and sat on the swing next to Blaine. “I told Lauren there’s no other out gay kids at McKinley, it’s just me.”
“And?”
“Pretty sure, I’m still right. We were unsuccessful.”
“Not for long,” Blaine said.
Kurt whipped his head around. “What do you mean?”
“I’m transferring so I guess the out gay population just doubled.”
“Why?” Kurt blurted out. “I mean, you are?”
“Yeah, um, my mom’s had enough of my dad’s BS so we’re moving to Lima. I want to live with her so that means leaving Dalton.”
“Well, I’m sad that you have to leave the Warblers but I’m also glad you’ll be with me. At McKinley that is.”
Blaine ducked his head and chuckled.
“You being at McKinley is definitely a bonus.”
Kurt shyly smiled back at his friend.
“So, I don’t want to make things weird but I feel there’s an opportunity here. I was talking to Wes and Sam earlier and they agreed there’s really nothing stopping me from asking now.”
“Curiosity peaked,” Kurt replied.
“Just promise you’ll say no if you don’t want to. We can completely forget I even asked at all if that’s what you want.”
“Okay…”
Blaine rubbed his hands on his jeans.
“Can I kiss you?”
Kurt’s eyes widened a bit before he started looking around in confusion trying to process this new development. Only in a few of his daydreams did Blaine return his feelings. Was this actually happening? Or was some sort of witchcraft at play?
He must’ve nodded his head because Blaine stood up from the swing.
“You’re sure?” he asked, leaning in.
“Yeah.”
Kurt met him halfway. He wants to say it was a perfect first kiss but it wasn’t. No fireworks, nothing like that, and Kurt had no idea what to do with his hands. Would Blaine feel weird if he ran his fingers through his curls? Should Kurt hold his waist?
It was also brief. A few seconds of lips touching. Chaste and sweet but not mind blowing.
“I really like you, Kurt,” Blaine told him. “Are you busy tomorrow?”
“I’m not busy.”
“Have dinner with me?”
“I’d like that.”
Blaine smiled and sat back down on his swing.
“And Blaine,” Kurt said. “I really like you too.”
At school on Monday, Blaine’s first day and Kurt’s first day with a boyfriend, Lauren met Kurt at his locker.
“Heard there’s a new kid.”
“Yeah, there is,” he confirmed.
“Guess I was right after all,” she replied.
Kurt tilted his head, confused.
“There is more than one out gay kid in McKinley. You can thank me for telling Sam the cops were coming later.”
With that, she walked away leaving Kurt staring after her with his jaw open.
“Hey you,” Blaine said, leaning against the lockets. “What’s going on?”
“Lauren Zizes is not a force to be reckoned with, Blaine,” Kurt told him, shutting his locker. “Don’t test her.”
“Noted. Walk me to class?”
“It would be my pleasure.”
If their hands brushed together a little too long as they walked in the hallway, no one said a thing.

Just when you thought it was safe to relax, for no further new TV shows were coming to humbly request your eyeballs, The CW decided to start premiering most of its shows this week.
The tiny network — home to some of TV’s best shows, like Jane the Virgin and Crazy Ex-Girlfriend — traditionally waits for October to debut its series, where they can premiere slightly outside of the biggest crush of fall TV season. But with the network expanding to Sunday nights for the first time this fall, it’s got more new series to flaunt than usual, to say nothing of all of its returning shows.
Thus, this week, we offer thoughts on The CW’s new high school drama All American, as well as its reboot of the venerable witch show Charmed. Finally, we have thoughts on HBO’s new series from Girls producers Lena Dunham and Jenni Konner, Camping, which also marks Jennifer Garner’s return to TV.
Few of these shows are great, and as critics, we often have limited information on whether they’ll get better. (It’s rare to impossible for broadcast networks, especially, to send out many episodes for review beyond the first couple.) But there’s something in all of these shows worth checking out, especially if you’re a particular fan of their genres.
(A note: We’ve only given ratings to shows where we feel we’ve seen enough episodes to judge how successful they will be long-term.)

Who doesn’t like a teen drama about a boy from an underprivileged background getting a hand up into the world of the rich and comfortable? It’s been the story of many, many teen soaps over the years, but perhaps most famously on The O.C., where Chino-born Ryan Atwood found himself suddenly living among the spoiled and pampered denizens of Orange County.
The CW’s new series All American takes that format and mixes it with Friday Night Lights for one of the strongest new dramas of the fall. It has its rough edges, but there’s something hard to beat about a good-hearted kid discovering the excesses of money and power, while those who have the money and power discover just how much they have in common with the new kid.
At the center of All American is Spencer (winning British newcomer Daniel Ezra), a football star at South LA’s public Crenshaw High. Spencer is black, and he comes from a majority-black neighborhood. (He’s also based on the real NFL player Spencer Paysinger.) When a coach for a Beverly Hills high school — played by Taye Diggs, who I never thought would make a great Coach Taylor but makes a great Coach Taylor — turns up to offer Spencer a chance at a role on a higher-profile team, Spencer worries about betraying his community before eventually realizing going to Beverly Hills could cement his future.
You can sort of see where this is going from there, but creator April Blair shows a refreshing willingness to keep the story moving throughout the first three episodes, unveiling a healthy dollop of plot twists and soapiness, while also giving her characters a whole lot of heart. Indeed, the twist at the end of the pilot takes the show from “pretty good” to “something I’ll give at least a season to figure itself out.”
There are issues here and there (the ensemble is perhaps a little too large for a show this young, and there’s way too much music to drive every emotional point home), but All American is an intriguing stew of teen soap tastes that taste great together. —Todd VanDerWerff
All American debuted Wednesday, October 10, on The CW and is available on the network’s website. Future episodes air Wednesdays at 9 pm on The CW.

For whatever reason, The CW’s new spin on Charmed has been embroiled in controversy over its status as a reboot starring brand new actors, rather than a revival starring the show’s original cast. And, sure, the original series has die-hard fans, and in a climate where seemingly every other popular show from the ’90s is being revived just as it was back then, it’s not hard to imagine a world where that happened with Charmed, too.
But if those disgruntled Charmed fans tune in to the new version, they’re likely to find a show that, despite a pilot that’s a bit of a mess, has the right elements in place to become just as fun as that earlier series (if not more fun — that original show could be a bit of a mess itself). Most importantly, Jessica O’Toole, Amy Rardin, and Jennie Snyder Urman (of Jane the Virgin fame), who developed this new Charmed, have nailed the single most important element of the show: the casting.
To make a show about three sisters who are witches — and so much more powerful when together than when apart — you really need three actors who simultaneously exude raw supernatural power and a sisterhood that feels real, not assembled right before shooting the pilot. (Even if you know that’s what happened.) And Madeleine Mantock, Melonie Diaz, and Sarah Jeffery absolutely seem like sisters, with all the attendant benefits and baggage that relationship carries.
Plus, revamping this show to be about a Latina family offers a subtly powerful twist on the idea of those without traditional political power having untapped reserves of raw power. The pilot could do more with this idea (and the series hopefully will), but at least the sisters never feel like they’ve been made Latina to score empty diversity points.
The pilot gets stuck trying to do too much, establishing the sisters’ powers and setting up a longer mystery about an unsolved murder and offering up a #MeToo metaphor as its monster of the week. But with this cast (including a very game Rupert Friend as guardian angel Harry) and smart writers behind the scenes, Charmed will hopefully find itself very quickly. —TV
Charmed debuts Sunday, October 14, at 9 pm Eastern on The CW.

Watching the four episodes of Camping that were sent out for review, I couldn’t help but think of another recent HBO series: Vice Principals. The shape of that series wasn’t immediately apparent in the first couple of episodes, and what it ended up being was vastly different from (and better than) what its beginning suggested. It rewarded the viewer for watching through to the end.
It seems as though Camping might fit a similar bill, though I would hesitate to presume that it’ll pull off the same gambit. Created by Lena Dunham and Jenni Konner, and adapted from the British series of the same name, Camping doesn’t really make any progress in the first half of its season.
The reasons to watch are apparent from the start: The cast is absolutely stacked, with Jennifer Garner simultaneously playing to type and against type as Kathryn, who works day in and day out to make her life as flawless and meticulously ordered as her Instagram account. David Tennant is perfectly cast as her husband, Walt; he’s as easygoing as Kathryn is wound-up, as embodied by his lankiness and penchant for bucket hats.
Filling out the rest of the group of friends (just imagine quotation marks around the word) out camping in celebration of Walt’s 45th birthday, there’s Ione Skye, Chris Sullivan, Janicza Bravo, Brett Gelman, Arturo Del Puerto, Juliette Lewis — there’s not a weak performance in the bunch.
Unfortunately, that’s not quite enough. By the season’s halfway point, Camping seems to be fixated on showcasing people behaving badly — whether on their own or due to outside influence — without necessarily having a larger point to make. It’s thin ice for any series to skate on, but even more so when a series asks its audience to invest in characters written to be annoying or self-involved. These people are poison to each other — why keep watching them?
A few moments shine — again, the cast is terrific, and manages to find bits of truthfulness in the way these characters tear at each other — but without a firm sense of plot or structure to keep it all together, the show falters. —Karen Han
Camping debuts Sunday, October 14, at 10 pm Eastern on HBO.
As mentioned, basically everything on The CW is back this week. (Some shows — notably Jane the Virgin — are being held for midseason, of course.) That includes the final season of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend (Friday at 8 pm), which kicks off with a bang, as Rebecca Bunch finds herself in prison. A happy ending to this saga might seem a stretch at this point, but we’d settle for a “mostly okay” ending, honestly.
If you love streaming shows, this is a hectic week, too. Netflix brings the terrific new cooking docu-series Salt Fat Acid Heat (Thursday), based on the book of the same name, and the superbly spooky Haunting of Hill House (Friday). Amazon, meanwhile, launches the first season of Mad Men creator Matt Weiner’s The Romanoffs (also Friday), while the new streaming service DC Universe unveils the gritty Teen Titans reboot Titans (whaddaya know, it’s debuting on Friday). We’ll have full reviews of some of these in the days to come.
If you’re a fan of podcast hosts, HBO launches its TV version of Pod Save America (Friday at 11 pm) and ABC launches The Alec Baldwin Show (Sunday at 10 pm), should you require a TV version of something originally designed to appeal to your earballs.
Finally, if you’re me (Todd), then the only thing you care about is adult swim’s Harvey Birdman: Attorney General (Monday at midnight), a brand new special reuniting the voice cast of the original Harvey Birdman: Attorney at Law, one of the great, silly spoofs of the 2000s. Sing it with me now! Whooooooo is the man in the suit? Whooooooo is the cat with the be-eak!
