Heaven, Hell and the Human Heart

When I read the SPN Pro-Ship Bang prompt for a story based on Dante's Inferno where Sam descends into Hell to rescue Dean, I knew I had to get it. And I was so, so lucky I did, because working with @saltbind has been freaking fantastic. And so is his story.

Go read it here, now. There was so much to work with that I kind of went a little nuts with the images, so there's a lot more under the cut. Check out my art post on AO3 for more background info and some stuff about the process, too, if you're into that kind of thing.

We're both fans of Zdzisław Beksiński and he was my inspiration for the first of the two main images for the story—Sam and Ruby on their descent through the Circles. I'm no Beksiński, but I did try to capture some of his otherworldliness and discordantly-pretty, diffuse lighting here.

I ended up with a bit of romance-novel-cover vibe here and I'm ok with that. And I will never pass up an opportunity to paint Sam's tits. ❤️

Gustav Dure's gorgeous engravings for Dante's Divine Comedy were one of the first things @saltbind referenced. I love them, too, and ended up turning some of my character concept sketches into illustrations that have a little bit of that woodcut feel to them.

Top row is Dean, Boy King Sam, and Ruby's demon form. Bottom row are Meg and Bela (I'm a little in love with this Meg).

Alastair was one of the first things I drew because I just cannot resist a good creepy monster.

In Hell's archives, there's definitely a manuscript that details Sam's journey. Here they recorded a tormented Dean and a righteously vengeful, into-his-powers Sam.

"Pen Pals" is a cute 7 chapter/6,333 word work that features a collection of letters back and forth between Sam and Gabriel throughout the early parts of supernatural! It touches on and talks about canon events and the feelings of the characters as they happen. It takes what is initially Gabriel reaching out because of intrigue at a letter he finds and transforms it into something softer and more romantic throughout their time exchanging letters.

It was an honor to be able to provide art for this fic and to participate in this bang! I'm happy with how my art turned out, and I loved being able to read this fic as it was being written.

Summary:

Fending off an unwanted advance leaves Dean Winchester in a bind - literally. He wakes up about to be auctioned off in one of the slave markets of the Below, the seedy underbelly of the City of Enoch. However, all of this is further complicated by the fact that Dean is the Michael Sword - the only person in the entire city whose internal hardware is immune to being hijacked.

Or so he thought. Enter Lucifer - the first Michael Sword. Lucifer buys Dean under the pretense of using him as a sex slave. In reality, Lucifer knows how dangerous Dean can be, and wants to use him to help take over the Below.

As Dean and Lucifer get closer, they begin to realize that Dean’s abduction was not an accident at all.

My work for "In True Love's Shadow" by AvalonSilver for the 2023 SPN Pro-Ship Bang!

"In True Love's Shadow" is a work inspired by Arthurian legends and is a lengthy fic that is still in progress! It follows Adam and some of his ancestors, telling the story of how he came to be with a nice little plot twist!

Novel rewrites continue. I'm now two days behind even my revised mental deadline, but writing takes the time that it takes, and holiday stuff/family time does as well, and sadly it's generally considered rude to do both at the same time.

Still, I'm..."nearly done" feels like a stretch; I have one short-ish scene left to write and two to edit, one of which is the 6K-word culmination-of-the-emotional-arc threesome. But relatively speaking...that's nearly done. (Although I still have the final pass and the polishing to do, after.)

The manuscript is over 82,000 words, now.

Holy shit, yo. 2024 may be the year I finally finish a dang novel.

(And goddamn, but I'mma need some time off before I write the next one...)

Summary:

The Winchester Boys have never had any easy life, their upbringing being supervised by a man hell-bent on vengeance for his murdered wife, and have largely been left to their own devices. If Dean's behavior, as the only Alpha his Omega brother, Sam, has had to turn to for love and affection, has become something with sharp teeth and long claws, well... It mattered not to him. Sam had always been his to love, cherish, and protect, and Dean would do anything within his power to ensure that he was the only one that Sam looked at as if he hung the moon.

There was no other bonds, familial or otherwise, that mattered as much to the two young Winchester boys as the relationships they had with each other.

If Dean had to fight to keep all of Sam's affection to himself he would do it. Even if it meant going after the one Alpha that they should have looked up to, their father, John Winchester.

There would never be a price Dean would not be willing to pay to keep his darling Sammy forever by his side.
