Skin. Why was this one of my favorite episodes in season 1? Because for me shape shifters are one of the scariest monsters in supernatural lore. If a hunter was not smart and experienced enough to distinguish if the one they are with is a shape shifter or not, they will definitely get killed. The way they changed into someone was also gross but at the same time fascinating. This episode also shows how the brothers know each other so well that Sam quickly identified that the one he was with was not Dean.

do you ever think about how much easier their hunts would've been if sam and dean wore silver and iron rings? like all you'd have to do is accidentally brush your hand against someone or give a simple handshake and you'd know if your suspect was like a myriad of different supernatural creatures. two hearts one braincell <3

a lot of significance is placed (rightfully) on what the shapeshifter says as/about dean in 1x06 skin—the implied jealousy and resentment, but especially "sooner or later, everybody's going to leave me." oof.

but also relevant i think is some of what the shapeshifter says as dean/about himself to becky. particularly "maybe this thing was born human but was different. hideous and hated. until he learned to become someone else."

and what is dean winchester if not a consummate performer. a people pleaser. a shapeshifter of sorts. papering over the tender parts of himself that he considers hideous and fundamentally unlovable. the parallels go both ways.
