Have quite a lot of thoughts on Jensen's comments about the prequel from his NJCon panels, and his awareness of the hate aimed at The Winchesters and himself.

Below the cut, my commentary, with transcript from the NJCon 2022 Jensen solo and the JenMish panel.

It seems clear that Jensen has seen the hate. Jensen being an EP means that's part of the territory. He's not just an actor now, he's an EP, and with that, has a responsibility over story and vision. So I'm not saying omg it's so wrong to criticize. Also this post isn't for the antis or to tell people how to behave. This post is for prequel fans, to unpack some dynamics of the fandom drama surrounding the prequel and hopefully offer some comfort.

I've witnessed that negative twitter discourse for months (and glad I finally stepped away). While there's plenty of support and love there too. But that critical dialogue was not merely critique, it got really personal and vitriolic at times, with hatred towards the project, towards anyone choosing to support it, and towards assigning bad motives to Jensen for various reasons. And in some cases, towards Danneel and Robbie as well. Not just "I am unsure about this premise, let's discuss."

This isn't to crit-shame anybody. It's about bad faith arguments, a wish to discourage support for the project, and about refusal to give Jensen the modicum of respect he has fully earned, where even if people don't want the prequel, there's no reason to trample all over how much cares, how much he has given to SPN as a show, how dedicated he is, how talented he is, and his own good faith in his reasons for making this. I'm not going to detail the kinds of things said on twitter standom but even if I weren't excited for it I'd still find that miserable to witness.

And for the record, my initial knee jerk reaction based on premise alone was a moment of dismay. Because it isn't the premise I want. And I'll never get over Wayward Sisters not getting picked up, personally. But that was only my initial reaction and the more I learned about it the more I felt confidence. So there is nothing wrong with having doubts, there is also nothing wrong with being excited about it.

But people who are assigning bad motives and moving goalposts and concern trolling, who fall into a relentless, merciless hatedom over it, that isn't where it's at.

So I think that's in the back of his mind with his NJ Con comments.

This part, from Jensen's solo panel, was an earnest, respectful elaboration of his thought process on the prequel, in response to a respectful question about fans who are worried about the premise. I love his commentary here. It's reassuring, and it's also exactly what I was thinking they were doing--filling in gaps. Taking the bits that were there and using that as a framework to reveal more. Not a retcon. Not contradictions of the mothership.

“With the prequel, there is not a lot of planning that was established on the mothership, as we call it, but there was enough, and it was kind of glossed over how Mary met John, how that whole situation happened, but the points that were made on Supernatural are kind of our way points. So we’ll hit those, but we’ll hit them in a way that maybe you didn’t expect, which going back to the great Kim Manners and our director on Supernatural, who said ‘you’ve got to give them what they want in a way they don’t expect it.’ That’s kind of a mantra with this is we’re going to hit those points and we’re going to make sure we touch those and those are tentpoles of what the story is but we get to fill in the gap. And we’re going to do it in a way that is first off, entertaining, but also services the lore that is Supernatural…*addressing fan’s question* She said her friends were worried about it. So, kook, I’m not some guy who hasn’t been a part of Supernatural for 15 years, I’m not some random dude ‘I’ve got an idea.’ This story means a lot to me. There’s also an entertainment value that is especially important to me and Robbie has been invovled. Again, we’ll service what has been established, but we want to get creative in the way that we get there.” [x]

This banter from the JenMish panel wasn't prompted specifically by the question, which was positive and generally about upcoming projects they're excited about. Naturally, Jensen would talk about The Winchesters.

The tone if you watch the video is obviously joking and having some fun with it and IMO it's having fun with both the hate and the defensive side of things, it's about fandom drama and online reactions to media in general, but also I think with a grain of genuine salt given what I pointed out above about how intense the twitter vitriol has been.

Jensen: I hope you all enjoy it and if you don’t like then that’s fine, feel free to hate watch every episode 

Misha: They are tough shoes to fill and all these people loved Supernatural and if they don’t love the prequel they’re going to come and burn your house down

Jensen: If they don’t love the prequel then they really weren’t fans in the first place

The subset of J-red stans on twitter who have cancelled Jensen over prequelgate, who have been the loudest ones being vitriolic against the prequel, lost it over this exchange. Whatever the tone or intention is, they took it as earnest. Guess what they have also been habitually the loudest gatekeepers in the fandom, claiming to be the only real fans, as a way to put down everyone else in the fandom. Who used and weaponized Jensen for years in the name of "respect Jensen" in a grudgewanking anti-shipping war. Some of them were even saying this week, no real fan wants this prequel, no spn fans want this prequel, no true fan should support this prequel.

Meanwhile, for many of us with a holistic love of the show, and who support Dean and Jensen, and who want to see the spn universe expand, and who want to see the spn universe become more inclusive and diverse with new shows, this prequel represents a lot of hope. Our support is from love not just of Dean and Jensen but Supernatural.

Jensen wasn't insulting people who aren't into this particular prequel. He was putting his specific antis in their place, and his "gatekeeping" was, ironically enough, aimed at those who weaponize gatekeeping to a vitriolic degree.

He's not having it. Everyone's welcome, if you hate it please hate watch anyway to help support, he hopes most fans will love it, he hopes spn fans will love it, he's respectful of the mothership content they're using as "tentpoles," Jensen Ackles loves this show as a whole.

The least people could do is not constantly attack him and his project on twitter. Again I'm not making this post for them and I'm not making this post to lecture at fandom how to behave. This post is for the prequel fans to help identify what's going on here and hopefully offer some comfort for those upset by all the hatred.

Okay….so on Sunday a thread was posted on twitter by a fan that was sharing another fan’s info from Jensen’s Denvercon meet and greet in regards to the events surrounding the prequel in June. I’m gonna do a recap but not go into the details of the contents because that’s not the point of this post, this is just my opinion on what was shared because I have talked about this topic since the night it started so I’m not just gonna ignore what seems to be Jensen’s side of the story just because I’m past ready to close the chapter. But I am going to link to the twitter thread and I highly recommend reading it before this post so you have all the details: 🧵

So, the prequel was asked about in the m&g, not the situation but Jensen still shared what it was that happened.

To recap the whole thing initially during lockdown him and D were going to watch spn eps and provide commentary, WB liked the idea wanted to make it but they didn’t want to pay so Jensen and D refuse, Peter Roth creates Chaos Machine productions gives it to them to start making content except they had no other ideas basically they did one job well and their boss gave them a promotion that they are vastly unqualified for, Jensen comes up with the idea for the prequel which WB likes, he gets Kripke on board- he’s flying by the seat of his pants cause he has no idea what he’s doing. The ball’s rolling he’s talking to industry people about the project but he’s not telling anyone else it's on a need to know basis. Reason given? Because he’s superstitious.

Allegedly...somebody leaked the information to Deadline. He got called on set because that counted as an emergency…...and instead of coming up with a plan they acted like chickens with their heads cut off randomly retweeting and posting some stuff to do bad damage control on something that didn’t need it, and act like this wasn't a leak. Also that quote Deadline said he gave? Apparently not him.

He gets back to filming but at some point fakes a bathroom break so he can check his phone and that’s when he finds out that Jared found out and when he realizes that he screwed up. According to the fan he did look remorseful.

The only thing that was missing from this tale was Jensen’s side of the story and now it seems we got it; it’s gonna be up to each individual to decide whether or not they believe this report and after if they believe Jensen is telling the truth, personally I do believe in the legitimacy of what was said in terms of the report, and while I don’t believe that the leak came from some random employee (y’all ever heard the saying: while the cats the mice will play, I think some mice played and it wasn't employee #7) I do think Jensen was being as truthful as possible. He never set out to hurt Jared, he didn’t do it on purpose, he never intended for Jared to find out the way he did, he himself admits he made a mistake; he fucked up but the good thing is it does sound like he learned his lesson.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, at the end of the day Jensen is a human being he’s gonna make mistakes and sadly sometimes we end up unintentionally hurting those we love.

Honestly, from the sounds of it, it seems Jensen is very out of the loop when it comes to this project like his involvement was just to come up with the idea, recruit Thompson, and get Kripke’s approval and basically just use his name for leverage when needed so not what we were lead to believe originally cause originally we were led to think he was super involved and on top of it. He (and D) also seems to be out of his depth with no clue what he’s doing. The future shall dictate what happens with this company, for his sake I do wish it does well cause I want him to succeed.

In regards to June, for me this is the last piece of the puzzle. Do I think we have all the details? No, but like I’ve said a million times we’re never going to get those but in my opinion we do have a clear enough image of what happened. And I don’t think the boys are lying about it or came up with this narrative together. I know sometimes it’s easier to believe in the scandalous, and I know there are those for whom this will all seem too clean, too tidy but sometimes a horse is just a horse not a zebra. But like I said, it’s up to each individual to decide what they believe and what they think of this new information.

Let’s talk about why Dean dancing with a lamp is subtext, but it’s subtext that supports textual arcs. Dean dancing with a lamp is not random. Meta on why Dean dancing with a lamp is part of the build of a textual arc for Dean, thematically, which also connects to his relationship with Cas. This symbolic moment being tacitly about Destiel will only feel like reaching if you ignore context, ignore canon, ignore long arcing, ignore textual material surrounding it. This isn’t just me talking about a ship, this is an important arc for Dean himself emotionally and the way canon’s working, Cas has become the star player in this specific emotional Dean arc about yearning. 

Here are some canon quotes. I could just leave these here and not write another word of meta because the canon wrote it for me. But I’ve added some further commentary to spell out clearly what I’m getting at.

Dean in 8.14 “Trial and Error” by Andrew Dabb:

“You see a light at the end of this ugly-ass tunnel. I don't. But I tell you what I do know – it's that I'm gonna die with a gun in my hand. 'Cause that's what I have waiting for me – that's all I have waiting for me. I want you to get out. I want you to have a life – become a man of Letters, whatever. You, with a wife and kids and – and – and grandkids, living till you're fat and bald and chugging Viagra – that is my perfect ending, and it's the only one that I'm gonna get.”

Dean in 10.16 “Paint it Black” by Eugenie Ross-Lemming and Brad Buckner:

“You know, the life I live, the work I do…I pretty much just figured that that was all there was to me, you know? Tear around and jam the key in the ignition and haul ass until I ran out of gas. I guess I just thought sooner or later, I’d go out the same way that I live – pedal to the metal, and that would be it....Now, um… recent events, uh… make me think I might be closer to that than I really thought. And…I don’t know. I mean, you know, there’s – there’s things, there’s…people, feelings that I-I-I want to experience differently than I have before, or maybe even for the first time.”

DEAN: But on a beach somewhere, you know? Can you imagine? You, me, Cas, toes in the sand, couple of them little umbrella drinks. Matching Hawaiian shirts, obviously. Some hula girls. SAM: You talking about retiring? You? DEAN: If I knew the world was safe? Hell, yeah. And you know why? 'Cause we freaking earned it, man.

Sam and Dean in 15.08 “Our Father, Who Aren’t in Heaven” by Eugenie Ross-Lemming and Brad Buckner:

DEAN: Look, man, I didn't want to say anything, okay, 'cause I was kind of in in a bad place, and, uh, yeah, I didn't want to jinx it or whatever, but, you know, I tried the family thing, right? SAM: Yeah, me too. And that's not for us. DEAN: No, not really. But I'm just saying if it was to work, Eileen, you know, she gets it. She gets us. She gets the life. She's hot. SAM: Dean. I mean, I'm not even- DEAN: Look, all I'm saying is you- you could do worse, okay? And she could certainly do better. Like, so much better. I'm happy for you, Sammy.

Dean and Garth in 15.10 “The  Heroes’ Journey” written by Andrew Dabb:

DEAN: You know, I gotta say, aside from pincushion in there… this is pretty nice. GARTH: Yeah, better than I ever thought I'd get. I mean, hunting -- I figured I'd be dead before I'm 40. You know, go out young and pretty. But now I've got a great wife, great kids. I guess...sometimes things work out.

Dean in 15.10 “The Heroes’ Journey” by Andrew Dabb:

Dean, wistful, watching through the window as Garth and Bess dance: You know, I always thought I could be a good dancer if I wanted to be.

Ok, let those roll around in your brain for moment. 

Now: CONTEXT. CONTEXT. CONTEXT.

There’s this long running arc about maybe Sam and Dean could each find a significant other, not white picket fence, but...something, with someone already in the life, who gets their life. There’s Dean’s move from despairing and believing the only ending he could have, the only ending any hunter could have, is dying with a gun in hand, to Dean’s enthusiasm for the concept of retirement, Dean’s wistfulness about finding a significant other, for what he thinks he can’t have, and he starts the cycle all over again, if he can’t have it, then he wants Sam to have it, so Dean encourages Sam with Eileen. Saileen, the Dean-blessed, Dean-approved Sam ship. Dean ships it. And that is how the canon is trending, complete with Sam and Eileen kissing goodbye and saying “this is real” and even God himself saying their feelings were real, “that was all you,” even if God manipulated events around them. Which is an overt mirror to Dean and Cas and Dean’s expressly stated doubts about what’s real and what isn’t, and Cas telling Dean “we are.” 

Much the way Sam has been witness to Destiel, and has often pointed out Dean’s Cas feelings. Dean’s got a front row seat to Saileen and approves; Sam’s had a front row seat to Destiel and approves. 

Let’s throw in Robert Berens’ work in The Trap here, since that’s relevant to this specific topic as well, because why did Sam and Dean in the potential future timeline where they’d killed Chuck give up and cave in to their vampire instincts? The world being overwhelmed with monsters...and losing Eileen and losing Cas. It’s right there in the dialogue. I’ll give you the quote and everything:

Sam and Dean in 15.09 “The Trap” by Robert Berens:

SAM: You want to quit? What's happened to you, Dean? Ever since -- DEAN: Ever since what? We lost pretty much everyone we've ever cared about? Ever since the Mark made Cas go crazy? Ever since I had to bury him in a Ma'lak box? Ever since then? Yeah. You know why? 'Cause the monsters -- they're everywhere. Everywhere! What we do -- it's not even Hunting anymore. It's whack-a-mole. We don't even save people. Every friend we've ever had is either dead, or they got wise and they packed it in. SAM: Jody's still fighting, and Bobby -- DEAN: Bobby has a death wish, and you know it. And Jody -- ever since what happened to Donna and the girls, she does, too. And after Eileen... so do you.

“Ever since” Dean had to bury Cas in a Ma’lak box. “After Eileen...so do you.” 

So there’s this canonical long, long thread across multiple authors (and those weren’t even all the quotes, I’m sure people could dig up more) about Dean in particular yearning towards finding a significant other, some contentment, with someone who already is in the hunting life, who gets it, who understands.  

An episode that flat out shows how losing their significant others is the final straw that rips out Sam and Dean’s last will to fight, and they lose themselves, and after they’re turned into vampires, they just...give into the darkness. Where Sam gives up their shot at destroying the big bad because losing everyone they love is too high a cost. Where losing Cas makes Dean lose hope, where losing Eileen sends Sam into a death wish mindset. Sam and Dean don’t just need each other. That’s not canon, it never has been.

And then right after that, along comes meta episode The Heroes’ Journey. Sorry if you don’t like The Heroes’ Journey, but it’s what the canon did, it’s textual, along with everything else I’ve pointed out here, and in among the crackish humor are some real emotional narrative points. 

In The Heroes’ Journey, Dean gets to see Garth’s life. Garth found his significant other, Bess, and she’s another werewolf. Now, Garth’s life resembles the traditional white picket fence idea a lot more than what Team Free Will are headed for. Garth has a big house with a porch, and he’s a dentist. He’s also a werewolf and his wife is a werewolf and his kids are werewolves because Bess is a pureblood werewolf, Garth didn’t exactly leave the life, and he helps Sam and Dean on a case. But nothing’s been indicating to me that anyone in Team Free Will is headed for that kind of settling down, with a house, becoming a dentist. However, the canon has been practically shouting now, as we near final episodes of SPN, to make the point about a desirable outcome--some kind of stability, contentment, and a significant other. Dean gets a front row seat to seeing a hunter can have that. Garth’s a hunter who turned into a werewolf and he can have that. 

When EP’s talk about how they aren’t headed for a white picket fence or driving off into the sunset or settling down, none of that rules out them finding...something...with someone, and some form of stability and contentment.  Nope, I can’t really imagine them in the suburbs becoming dentists. But canon sure is putting up big neon arrows to...something. Think outside the box. This isn’t about the white picket fence. 

And in The Heroes’ Journey, Dean, conked out on the good gas so Garth can fix his teeth, has a trippy dream where he dances with a lamp.

Rewatch the ep. Look at how the dance is choreographed not just the use of light, because that’s a clue too. The whole dance could have been Dean and Garth being dancing bros, but Garth fades off the stage, and Dean dances alone...until he grabs the standing lamp. In a season where Dean and Cas’s relationship is an A-plot, define it how you like, it’s A-plot. Their breakup and their reconciliation, which played like a marital breakup and reconciliation, are tied to major mytharc beats. In a season where a long-running textual theme about Dean’s developing hope for retirement and his wistfulness about “things...people...feelings...” is getting further play. Where Dean and Cas’s relationship continues to be one of the show’s most central ones.

Dean dances with a lamp. While his emotionally fraught, intense close relationship with Cas--A BEING MADE OF LIGHT--has a long-running arc and recently more and more textual level content spelling out the sublimated romantic interest in small words, while there’s an arc about Dean’s yearning for that stability, contentment, a significant other.

CONTEXT. 

We don’t think Destiel’s “going canon” because Dean dances with a lamp, it’s that Dean dancing with a lamp is kinda loud serving as reflection of canon textual arcing. Sometimes subtext adds a layer. Sometimes subtext is directly tied to the surface layers, an echo, a highlighter.

I’ll just be over here, crying because Dean danced with a lamp.
