I was going to do only a simples doodle for Splendid, I guess I got a little too exited to draw our little blue squirrel guy... And this was my first time drawing him!

Here’s my own take of Splendid as an anthro. This is for my HTF City AU that I will do very soon.

I'm pretty sure I've made a post about this exact specific thing before, but I'm going to type this out anyway, because I can't get over how Tove Jansson's work depicts masculinity, and the idea of gender in general.

While she was - and still 100% is - absolutely a wlw icon (being the first woman to bring a same-sex date to Finland's annual independence day ball in the Presidental Palace), and her work doesn't focus on men or masculinity, she had no resentment towards the male sex as a whole. In her works, the male characters are mainly amusing creatures, up to their silly masculine antics that men are bound to do just the same as squirrels are bound to build their certain type of nests and migratory birds are bound to fly to the south for winter.

There are characters - whole species, in fact - that more or less represent people trying to perform their respective gender roles, like the Fillyjonk who manages to be a strictly normative Housewife without any mention of her having a husband, and the masculine counterpart of generally male hemulens. While there are both fillyjonks and hemulens that are happy being Traditionally Feminine and Traditionally Masculine, there's one short story of a fillyjonk who doesn't enjoy micro-managing an immaculate household, and another one of a hemulen who doesn't enjoy any traditionally masculine hobbies but tries to arbitrarily pick one anyway, because of societal expectations to have one.

But the thing is, the characters who don't fit into standard strict gender presentations are perfectly comfortable with themselves and neither they nor anyone else really gives a shit. Jansson was born in 1914, and it's remarkable how neutral the characters' depictions are to a modern eye. Being personally finnish and introduced to her works in a language that doesn't have gendered pronouns, I literally did not know what gender a few of the characters were before encountering their english or swedish descriptions with pronouns. And I never wondered whether they're supposed to be male or female. Hell, even the character representing the love of her life is depicted like this, and it never crossed my mind to wonder whether Too-Ticky is male or female. She's just Too-Ticky, who dispels wisdom.

But coming back to masculinity, the way Jansson depicts male characters and The Masculine Urge To Do Shit isn't depicted as either superior nor inferior to her female characters' ways of doing their own thing. Sure, men cause problems on purpose from time to time, but the narrative doesn't depict this as inherently bad any more than it is inherently good. The protagonist Moomintroll is a boy and does his best to perform some ideal of being manly, but it's depicted as a part of him trying to grow up. His father's misadventures in trying to be either a wildhearted Manly Adventurer or a Stable Provider For His Family - and the conflict between these two ideals - aren't depicted as bad things to want, or something he shouldn't want, but just an inherent part of being a man.

The protagonist's girlfriend Snorkmaiden is depicted as vain and frivolous as much as she is kind and loving, but her girlish silliness and genuinely kind heart aren't depicted as being contradictory to each other, it's just who she is as a person. The protagonist's mother, Moominmamma, is the platonic ideal of a loving and patient mother and wife, and The moomins' TvTropes page actually goes as far as describing her as fitting the definition of the platonic ideal of the perfect traditional japanese woman, being gentle, loving and hospitable, but strong and unhesitant to protect her family. She doesn't humour her husband's whims out of some schooled and practiced dedication to the role of feminine submissiveness, she puts up with his stupid shit because she loves him.

Tove Jansson was a splendid woman and her work and art are rightfully one of Finland's proudest gifts to the world, and whether she was gay or bisexual, it clearly shines through her work how as much as she loved women, she didn't dislike men. The Masculine Urge To Do Shit is aknowledged with a jovial shrug: "Yeah, they do that sometimes."

The photos are of; Goldcrest at Lakeside Country Park, Blue Tit at Lakeside, Long-tailed Duck at Hayling Island Oysterbeds, mushrooms in Abbey Gardens, Roe Deer at Lakeside, turkey tail mushrooms at Fishlake Meadows, Silver-sided Sector spider at home, winter heliotrope at Lakeside, view at Winnall Moors, view at Southsea, view at Hayling Island and the stark looking rose bush in the garden with a few fading rose hips and yellow leaves.

December was a charming month packed full of wild wonder for me, a month where I had to do things a bit differently led to a huge focus on local areas and a couple of relatively fresh places for me visited and I saw some amazing wildlife to have a fitting end to an incredible year for me. In my birdwatching a final addition to my highest ever year list to bring my 2023 total a neat 220 came in the form of a bird I have a huge bond with and admiration for, the Black Redstart at Southsea Castle. This came a day after being mesmerised by wonderful views of the Long-tailed Duck and other birds at Hayling Island. Red Kite, Marsh Harrier, Stonechat, Rock Pipit, Nuthatch, Kingfisher, Jay, Mute Swan, Brent Geese, Red-breasted Merganser and Great White Egret were other key birds of my month. On my Lakeside walks the Goosanders continued to give with more fantastic sightings of them and the Common Gull was another welcome frequently seen winter visitor. Cormorant, fine views of Tufted Ducks, the cheery constant of Great Crested Grebes, Goldcrest, Green and Great Spotted Woodpecker, Jay, marvelous Redwings, Song Thrush, Wren, so many smashing moments seeing Long-tailed Tits, Kingfisher and Ring-necked Parakeet have been other key Lakeside sightings to bring me joy this month.

It has naturally quietened down for insects this month but I did manage a butterfly sightings with a probable Peacock seen quickly flying over at Lakeside and a hoverfly there on Christmas Eve. Grey Silverfish as well as frequent sightings of Long-bodied Cellar spider and the Silver-sided Sector spiders were interesting to see at home. It has been a memorable mammal month ending perhaps my greatest year of watching mammals with magical moments connecting with Roe Deers at Lakeside and Winnall Moors and a fair few Grey Squirrels and Brown Rats seen. Likewise with fungi a quieter month but multiple turkey tail sightings and some splendid candlesnuff fungi among others kept the interest up.

In a wet and relatively mild month a notable thing was how almost bizarre it was to notice things with plants a few weeks/months ahead of where they should be, from the verge at Lakeside bursting with winter heliotrope in flower and a violet to the hazel catkins beginning to adorn the landscape and the forsythia hedge out the front having a few flowers. Wild carrot and white deadnettle were two of a few of the summer/all season flowers I enjoyed in flower in places too. It was a great month of observing seed heads from fleabane to hogweed including gripping old man's beard and in an incredible fruit year bits of fruit still going like rose hips, hawthorn berries and holly berries. Mistletoe a key seasonal sight. Finally I enjoyed many breathtaking moments immersing myself in the outdoors at special sites taking in beautiful landscapes, with great sky scenes including the rainbow and the moon key to this month too. Happy New Year all!

cuddles: i think he'd be super fast, and he'd probably turn and weave around a lot to try and lose me. also, most likely to climb a fence to escape. a fun challenge!

nutty: he's an actual squirrel! probably also fast, but i feel like he'd get distracted and forget what was happening

mime: mime is speeeeeedy for sure. also, i'm liable to lose them around a corner because they're quiet

russell: i think he's probably way faster than people give him credit for

lifty and shifty: i can't imagine any scenario in which i'd chase them separately, they have to be together. they lose some points for the fact that they probably bite if they get caught

petunia: i don't think she's particularly fast on a normal day but i think if she's in a stressful situation she'd surprise me

giggles: faster than petunia, but also more likely to start thrashing and kicking if she gets caught

mole: i think he would hit me with his cane

toothy: he's reasonably fast, but he loses points for the fact that he would immediately start crying, and fearful tears aren't really my thing

He's surgically gotten flying squirrel wings attached, only dresses in over the top super villain clothes, and does petty stupid crime in hopes of someday "battling" the stranger that hes acting like ruined his life. we had a splendid time on Valentine’s. Poppy made cookies and we all had to decorate them, but I think Julie and I added to much sprinkles. I didn’t want my other cookie after my mouth turned red, so I gave it away.

Sally had got Julie a kite so they could fly it in the sky and make it dance with the wind. Sadly it is know living with the squirrels and birds.

Some of our friends sadly wasn’t able to attend our time together for they were off. They did send letters and some stuff with it to try and make up for it.

Now I like to think about how Mole and Splendon't met.

Both were sitting on the same park bench when at one point Mole notices that the other person has been mumbling something about Splendid.

But it wasn't admiration for the flying squirrel, it was them disliking the so called "hero"

And that brought Mole's attention.

I like to imagine Mole saying "My condolences." when he hears Splendont is Splendid's twin.

Tailhitch after living among the residents of happy tree town for a while has opinions on most of them.

Flippy: getting the easy one out of the way, they’re friends. Tailhitch understands flippys pain and trauma better than just about anyone. Add in both of them being soldiers and they get along pretty well. Flippy appreciates the fact that Tailhitch, as a cybertronian is immune to anything fliqpy can do. When the autobot is around collateral can be minimized. They tend to avoid each other whenever Tailhitch uses his holoform. It reminds flippy of a friend he lost and mistakes he made.

Fliqpy: fliqpy despises Tailhitch for stopping him during his rampages, but most of what Tailhitch feels towards the rampaging monster is pity and sadness. During the few brief conversations the two have had fliqpy has admitted that he respects Tailhitch as a soldier and that it’s a shame that they’re on opposite sides. Tailhitch couldn’t help but admit that fliqpy’s “creativity” was impressive. Beyond that it’s one sided animosity.

Flaky: he/she/they are terrified of Tailhitch. Just like they’re scared of pretty much everything. Tailhitch tries to be friendly with the porcupine and give them advice on anxiety but there’s only so much he can do. Flaky has had a few positive interactions with Tailhitch and has expressed they don’t hate him. But he’s 17 feet tall and a robot. It’ll freak a lot of people out.

Nutty: Tailhitch ain’t a fan, there’s only so much his processors can take you know? He’s loud he’s way too energetic it’s annoying. Just being around the squirrel overstimulates the young autobot.

Splendid: you’d think that both being aliens who want to save people would let them get along right? Wrong. First time they met splendid tackled Tailhitch thinking he was some kind of alien invader and both started swinging. Since then they don’t speak to each other outside of “polite” greetings. (Usually just calling each other names)

Lumpy: Tailhitch does not like the moose. It seems as though he is willfully ignorant of his surroundings unless money is involved. Then he’s just a greedy jerk to everyone.

Handy: Tailhitch has no idea how the beaver does the things he does without actual hands, he’s impressed and is becoming friends with handy via the construction of a catapult.

Giggles: Tailhitch doesn’t have too many opinions on the chipmunk. She’s polite enough, and pleasant enough to be around but interests clashing makes it hard to be friends.

Cuddles: he’s a good guy but he’s always the first one to come to Tailhitch with a terrible idea that he SWEARS will be totally awesome. Outside of that they’re chill with each other.

Lammy: either there’s something wrong with her or something’s going on with that pickle. He has a hard time trusting her.

Toothy: Tailhitch doesn’t really have an opinion on toothy, he seems to be alright but the mech doesn’t hang out with the beaver too much.

Russell: Tailhitch likes Russell, he’s cool. Could just be because Tailhitch is a one piece fan, could be that Russell is just that likable who knows.

The mole: the mole freaks tailhitch out, he never speaks and somehow despite being blind he avoids being caught in the crossfire frequently.

Splendont: Tailhitch’s opinions on the red flying squirrel are much the same as his opinions on the blue flying squirrel. Not good.

Mime: Tailhitch doesn’t really have an opinion on the mime. Hes somehow even quieter than the mole, and Tailhitch isn’t sure if it’s actual mutism or just dedication to the craft. If the mime is just really dedicated to the bit even when in danger, then Tailhitch is impressed because he’s never heard the mime scream once.

Petunia: Tailhitch was a miner for most of his life, he’s a messy guy. Petunia does not appreciate this and frequently tries to make him less messy, it has yet to stick. He finds her somewhat annoying but he humors her attempts.

Sniffles: Tailhitch appreciates the presence of the anteater, they share similar interests and sniffles is even trying to find a way to send Tailhitch home, they keep spare copies of all of the notes and blue prints with Tailhitch whenever sniffles blows himself up and they have to start over. Plus he helps Tailhitch whenever his energon is low and he needs refueling.

Disco bear: he’s weird and kinda annoying but dammit Tailhitch loves music too much and getting funky is too much fun. He can appreciate a guy who lives his life with a bit of groove.

Pop and cub: Tailhitch can tell that pop loves his son very very much but he just wishes he’d pay a bit more attention to the little guy. Watching the kid die is always the most horrifying. Cub always has stars in his eyes whenever Tailhitch is around and Tailhitch does like the kid. Tailhitch occasionally babysits for pop whenever he and disco bear go out together.

Lifty and shifty: Tailhitch has gotten way too fed up with the twins and has punted them before. He’s not a fan of them.

Cro marmot: he honestly scares Tailhitch, the mole may freak him out but cro marmot scares him. How does he do the things he does? It’s weird and creepy, Tailhitch doesn’t like it.

Truffles: Tailhitch honestly forgets truffles exists sometimes. No real opinions on the guy.
