i kind of wonder if, when they say the four seasonal splatfests will rerun, that means they'll do so continually until switch online shuts down
like it used to be that splatfests were unique events and so when they stopped adding to the game it meant we stopped getting splatfests. we've all been assuming this would continue this time as well.
but due to covid they decided to rerun a few splatoon 2 splatfests a year or so later, and suddenly they weren't unique anymore. still, they were limited and soon splatfests were over again, but since they'd already moved on from splatoon 2 and were definitely focusing on splatoon 3, it made sense to do that. that might not happen again this time--splatoon 4's probably a ways away still
if they approached splatoon 3's development with the precedent that splatfests can just be rerun later... what if they're setting it up so that just happens indefinitely with the seasonal ones? kind of like how in animal crossing there are seasonal events that loop each year (the two series have common devs, after all)
s1 and s2 both made changes to account for the absence of splatfests by their final updates. there were other ways to get snails, and in s2 you could do splatfest stages in private battles and you got a splatfest tee replica. none of that is in s3. is that because they're saving it for after reruns end? or because they never will end?
definitely would be a positive if they kept going. it helps the game retain more of its value (since you know nintendo will be selling s3 for $60 right up until the shop closes, just as they did with s1 and as they'll probably do with s2 as well) and it means the tricolor/10x badges won't be missable (same with the big run badges and at least some of the locker decorations)
other thing that occurred to me: all of these seasonal splatfests were in the middle month of the season (splatoween in october, frostyfest in january, springfest in april, summer nights in july). big runs are always the first month of the season. eggstra work doesn't follow as consistent a pattern, but half of them have been in the third month of the season--going forward, they could possibly always be in the third month, which would mean we'd get a splatoon 3 event of some sort every single month (and there's also gold salmon run rotations, which are already always in the third month of the season even if eggstra work doesn't fill that spot)

Splatoon Fanfic Timeline
Remember when I said my fanfic has heavy reliance to the lore? Well, that is at the cost of the timeline.
Tumblr media
Since Splatoon moves in real time, it was challenging to arrange the events of the playable story mode without making the past too slow-paced.
To make the story make sense, the goal was to shave a year off the original timeline. To help me out, I took major Splatfests and some directs that mention of the playable story modes. I chose to ignore when the live performances originally took place, moving them to somewhere within the timeline.
Here's a TLDR:
XX15: Hitto (Captain) moves to Inkopolis Plaza and meets Cuttlefish, later defeats Octavio XX16: Pearl and Marina meet, Callie vs Marie Splatfest XX17: Maika (Agent 4) enters Octo Canyon and saves Callie. Hachi and Co fall into Kamabo Co XX18: Hachi leaves Kamabo Co., later moving in with Maika XX19: Hitto is made captain, Hachi and Maika resign from the NSS, Final Splatfest (Splatoon 2) XX20: Pearl and Marina start dating XX21: Maika graduates from high school XX22: Sanne (Neo 3) enters Alterna, Hachi goes on world tour. XX23: Hachi enters the Spire, Sanne saves the world, Shiver becomes leader, Hachi exits the Memverse.
Dual Complexity takes place 2 weeks later.
I want to make it clear that this is a fan canon, and these are just my version of the events prior to the fanfic so that enough people will have context that I couldn't focus too much on in the main story.
Longer Version:
XX15:
Hitto (Captain) moves to Inkopolis Plaza in May. He meets Cuttlefish who tries to warn him about the Octarians. Hitto finally accepts, if it only means getting better at turf wars.
Hitto turns a new leaf and becomes a real agent, defeating Octavio in December, seven months after joining.
XX16:
Pearl and Marina meet in January at Mount Nantai.
Callie vs. Marie Splatfest takes place in July
XX17:
Octavio escapes and begins the “Octo Valley Rehab Project”. We’ll touch more in that when we get to it.
Hitto and Cuttlefish travel to the Cape in May, and the events of the Squid Sisters Stories take place.
Maika (Four) moves to Inkopolis Square for the Summer in July, casually living until she noticed Marie watching her. She follows her to Octo Canyon and stumbles upon the campaign.
Hitto and Cuttlefish survey the cape, encountering Hachi (Eight) in October and falling into the Metro.
Later in early December, Maika saves Callie. So, Octo Canyon took five months to finish.
XX18:
Hachi and Co. escape Kamabo Co in June, taking him eight months to do so (heh).
After staying with OTH, Hachi moves in with Maika in July.
XX19:
Hitto becomes captain in March and has Maika and Hachi resign from the New Squidbeak Splatoon.
Maika and Hachi begin working at Grizz Co. for the time being.
The final Splatfest takes place.
XX20:
Pearl and Marina are officially in a relationship, starting in January.
Hachi is invited to Off the Hook's world tour.
XX21:
Maika graduates from high school. This is the first time she gets contact from Marie since her leave, even if it’s just a casual conversation. She quits Grizz Co. and begins a job as a tutor.
In August, Hachi quits Grizz Co. for the tour.
XX22:
This is where we really start screwing around with the timeline...
In September, the remaining members of the NSS notice some disturbance in the Crater, leaving Cuttlefish to watch Octavio. Octavio somehow escapes, and Cuttlefish goes to Splatsville to find a new agent.
Sanne (Neo 3) starts on Alterna in October, a month after moving to Splatsville, Hachi would end up in the Memverse months later in February (The same time the first Direct for the DLC dropped) when OTH would wrap up their tour.
XX23:
Sanne saves the world shortly before the Nessie vs. Alien vs. Bigfoot Splatfest, when Deep Cut have finally seen the 'monstrosities' they spoke of. This means she was going in and out of Alterna for six months, and given she was not explaining why, it left her in a rough patch with her friend group. She hasn’t completely surveyed the haven however.
Hachi would 100% the Order Spire in September the same year (when the second Direct dropped) and after Shiver was made leader of Deep Cut. This makes the events of Side Order last for eight months, haha.
With OTH's tour over, the trio travel back to drop Hachi home, only to receive a certain message from Marie asking the gang to come back together after five years of radio silence from the NSS.
Two weeks later: Dual Complexity.

Frostyfest theme ahoy, mateys!
Tumblr media
Here we go again... taking another old splatfest and putting a fresh coat of Splatoon 3 paint on it (this is basically just Splatoon 2's Family v Friends all over again). But hey I'm not complaining. I didn't get to experience all the Splatoon 2 splatfests prior to the repeats in 2020 so I'm letting this slide.
Nintendo US hasn't done their own post for the splatfest so I don't have the time where voting & the actual fest starts here in the US just yet but I'll update this post when something does come out.
But hey now that the theme's announced it's just a matter of time until that superfresh frostyfest gear gets released! Can't wait to use the coral wreath! Love that thing :D
EDIT: the next splatfest is starting January 12th at 6 PM CST!

Riel drew their octo in front of a lot of sweets. Goggles drew their inkling eating Hot Cheetos. Howlite drew the "why can't I hold all these?" meme with Big Man and limes. Sylvia drew Frye holding a big lolly. Rachoo drew a kinda weird scene with Harmony. ZackScott and Holly both, individually, drew a Spicy Pepper. 5mgAbilify drew a salmonid jelly.

Oh hey this is a small lore note I just realized (and seemingly last to find out lmao, cut me some slack I only started playing in august)
We finally got the canon names for the three clans Deep Cut are from!
Tumblr media
Which means we also have their last names :D I’m not sure if I’m just dumb but they never stated the Clan names explicitly and the only time it’s really mentioned is in an interview deep cut gave in January:
Where it’s mentioned that their families got together a lot, and that Frye’s family had her doing dance lessons and eel training to the point that she didn’t really have friends.
Also in the sunken scrolls it’s implied that their clans govern or protect the Splatlands to some extent, with the first one we get outlining a prophecy that Deep Cut reference during the story mode’s finale. In later scrolls it’s also implied that these clans are OLD, and have their traditions passed down, meaning that this alliance they seem to have wasn’t always the case but is still ongoing.
Idk I’m just hungry for more info on these guys. It’s said that Deep Cut run the anarchy splatcast, did they still run the Splatfest before that? What exactly do these families do? Are they just families with historical significance or do they still have some kind of power? And how does that effect our rowdy trio?

A Look Back At A Certain Splatoon Promo Image...
Tumblr media
The more I think about it, the more I think that we got Splatoon 3 (and another event) a lot later than Nintendo originally envisioned. The image above was released by Nintendo at Midnight (JST) January 1, 2020. I even remember where I was when I first saw it: partying on New Year's Eve in a karaoke bar with friends. Right away people were wondering about the image, and what it could mean. This also wasn't too long after the fake-out "Where's Marina?" promo where the answer was "oh, she took the photo!" Of course, the most obvious hidden meaning was the text on the bottom disguised to look like a reflection in the waves: SOS. And written in the waves, combined with the "reflection", said "Save Our Salmons". This had people wondering if this was a hint as to a later plot. Maybe a new DLC for Splatoon 2, or even a Splatoon 3. Looking back, it's obvious now that this was meant to be our first tease for Splatoon 3, given the plot of its Story Mode revolving around the consequences of Salmon Run and why Mr. Grizz was having us all steal eggs. The only thing is...we all know what happened in 2020, and what it did to numerous industries, especially tech-based industries like video game development. We know now that Splatoon 3 development started about as soon as the Chaos vs. Order Splatfest ended, just like development for Splatoon 2 kicked into high gear after Marie won Splatoon 1's final fest. Given how fast Nintendo put out Splatoon 2 after only a year and change of development, it seems like it's possible Nintendo intended Splatoon 3 to be released sometime in 2021 instead of this year. But of course, a certain virus had other plans. Eventually with vaccines, air filtration technology, and the virus evolving to be overall less deadly, we we able to slowly get back to an almost normal lifestyle, and a lot of the bottlenecks in the supply chain started to ease up, but in 2020 itself, everyone's plans were thrown into... well... chaos. If I were to make a guess, absent the pandemic, we would have likely gotten the first Direct Splatoon 3 teaser in September 2020, with a release date of Fall 2021. Instead, Nintendo, trying to keep Splatoon hype going, gave us some extra rerun Splatfests, including a rerun of Splatoween over Halloween weekend (after all, not like anyone had any real plans for the holiday itself), while they played catch-up on game development in a pandemic-strewn world. And that leads me to another topic: The Super Mario Splatfest. 2020 was also Super Mario's 35th Anniversary as a franchise (discounting 1983's Mario Bros and 1981's Donkey Kong), and if you may have noticed, much of the celebration spilled over into 2021, including a Splatoon 2 Splatfest fitting the theme. Again, absent the pandemic, I think we would have gotten the Super Mario 35th Anniversary celebration confined within the calendar year of 2020, with the related Splatfest in July 2020, one year after "Final Fest". Again, this is just my musing, and I could be amazingly off-base with this, but given the original timing of the "Save Our Salmons" promo, it seems to make sense. Stay Fresh, Don't Get Cooked, and Catch Ya Later! 😊
