With Prince, sex and God (both subversive topics in 1980s pop music) could coexist in the same artistic space. His most sexually explicit song from Purple Rain, "Darling Nikki," about his one night encounter with a "sex fiend" also contains haunting lyrics recorded in reverse (turn on sound for a snippet.) When played forward, Prince is chanting, "Hello. How are you? I'm fine 'cause I know that the Lord is coming soon. Coming, coming soon." "His 1981 song "Controversy," which had him reciting the Lord's Prayer while singing about human curiosity regarding sex, race, and religion, and "Darling Nikki" now contained a blend of the pure and the profane, something he was turning into an art, according to Susan Rogers." 'It was really common for Prince if he went too far in one direction, to balance that statement with a more spiritual statement, and that place where the backwards gospel bit comes on the album is no accident. One of the risks I'm taking is that people will become attached to the image they see and the constructs they imagine for how it will move forward. I can see the direction that I want to take it and it will require some sacrifice. Painting...art...life, teaches non-attachment. It helps the artist to learn how to let go of "moments of time" in order to move forward. This piece speaks of mutability. Fleeting time, transience, elusive ephemeral moments. I hope I don't screw this up, wish me luck, it gets harder from here on out. Have a beautiful day.
