Exploring another culture, learning about it, learning from it, and being influenced by it. Often times a cultures very history is their culture and you often times can’t learn one without the other. If a person becomes so inspired by another culture that they take the time to learn about it and embrace the culture then that is not appropriation. 

The biggest problem with cultural appropriation (and for the world in general) is miscommunication/misunderstanding. Many cultures have similar ideologies, beliefs, symbolism's, cultures, etc, but have maybe one or two major differences. There are many cultures out there that do not even come in contact with each other, but they could be mirror images of each other. 

Now about Spirit Animals. Yes spirit animals have a major importance to many native cultures, but it’s not just the natives of the America’s (including all of the Americas not just in the US) that have had the use of spirit animals in their belief system. Cultures all around the world have always placed high meaning in animals either in the physical plane or in the spiritual. 

Take for example the Celts (focusing on Irish Celts because that’s what my primary knowledge stems from). Animals had a huge symbolic influence on the belief system for the Celts. Often times entire tribes/clans had a single spirit animal that would protect, guide, and empower the tribe/clan. Individuals could and would also have their own spirit animals that, among other things, would bring omens. Druids were said to be able to take the form of their spirit animal once they had a strong enough connection to the world around them (this information is based on the Celtic sagas that have been recovered). 

Many tribes in Africa also had spirit animals that would come to people to teach lessons, guide, protect, etc. Shamans and sages were thought to have the strongest connections to their spirit animals and would often call on their spirit animals to empower them. 

In Norse mythology spirit animals were sent by the gods to guide their chosen through their lives (one of many things they did). Compared to other cultures in Norse mythology spirit animals tended to take on a more physical form rather then a spiritual one. 

And those are just a few of the cultures that I have done in depth research into. I’m not talking about the ‘new age’ stuff here. What I know is based on years of studying mythology, history, cultural anthropology, and reading/listening to the stories that have been passed down and saved despite Roman/British/etc attempts to smother cultures not their own. A great deal of information has been lost, but there is still enough out there if you’re willing to do the leg work. 

What does all this mean? Why am I typing all this up? Because the world isn’t fair. There has always been cultures that have been smothered throughout history and it isn’t fair. But that doesn’t mean one person has the right to shame many others because of a similarity between cultures. Spirit animals are not exclusively one culture or another. One culture does not get to slap a “Property of ___” sticker on the belief. And that goes both ways; a culture that hasn’t had spirit animals or animism does not get to grab the idea and claim it as its own. 

People who jump on the ‘spirit animal’ bandwagon though, without researching and learning about the significance, are just as upsetting as those that try to take away spirit animals because they believe the belief only belongs to their culture. I’ve lost count of how many times people have asked me to do magic for them, tell them their spirit animal/aura, turn them into frogs, curse someone, etc etc, all because I mentioned my belief in druidism. (I will admit that it is fun to turn around and give an in depth analysis on what druidism really is just to see them look super confused)

The best way for cultural appropriation to stop is for people to educate themselves. If you meet someone outside your culture and they show interest, don’t push them away and hide your culture in a special little box; teach them. Teach them why your culture is so important to you and why they should be respectful. Help them to understand that things like “omg what’s my spirit animal” or “turn me into a frog!” or “Do you dance around a fire naked?” are hurtful and harmful. 

And if they still insist on being jerks about it then they don’t deserve to be in your life. Cut them away like the poison they are.
