Who are the Spindles anyway? [Part 4]: Ellis Spindle and Robert Spindle
continued from part 3
So, we are stuck in quite a pickle! The land tract books are confusing and hard to use, the land records from Denver only give one entry for an Edward H. Mills, and the 1885 census is not helpful here. The Internal Revenue Assessment Lists do not have El Paso County! The Colorado State Archives, interestingly, definitely has some records on Hollis:
Tumblr media
Same record is listed in another index. He was actually married to Blanche Ellis, but at least this record exists.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I thought my quest was at a dead end, and lo and behold I came upon the Colorado Historic Newspapers Collection. From this, we know that, for Hollis [7]:
He owned an El Paso County Farm, in Colorado Springs as early as 1910
He was listed as a rancher in 1911
He was appointed, in 1911, superintendent of South Park Land & Live Stock Co., in place of J.F. Rhodes, with him and his wife living on the Hartsel ranch
He was moving his sheep to the mountains in the summer of 1914
He was an east bound passenger from Hartsel in 1914
In 1914, his wife was ill in Colorado Springs
A Ms. Hollis R. Mills (his wife) and himself were hosts at a St. Patrick's Day Party in 1915 at the Hartsel hotel
In 1917, Hollis is elected president of the Colorado Sheep Growers' Association
He was a member of a stockgrowers association in 1920
In 1921, he , his wife, and his daughter Ida visit in Leadville
He was a witness to a land sale in Howbert, Colorado in 1923
He was  vice-president of the Leadville-Holy Cross Sheepgrowers Association in 1924
Hollis is nominated for county commissioner of the 3rd district by the Republican party in 1926
He is second vice-president of the Colorado Wool Growers Association in 1930
Hollis is a director of the Park County Wool Growers Association in 1931
This post was originally published on WordPress in February 2019.
We know from Hollis's gravestone and his Find a Grave entry that he dies in February 1934 in Colorado Springs, with his wife (Blanche) not dying until 1949, with both buried in the same cemetery. The Holly Cross Trail reported in April 1934 that his wife would manage a 70,000 acre ranch in South Park, with a son, Edward Mills, being a superintendent. This also fits with RBM I's will, when this Edward is listed as a grandson of Edward E. Mills, RBM I's brother.
Hollis, a person whom was county commissioner in 1928, and was a sheep breeder whom contributed to wool industry funds, along with various committees, the National Park Service wrote the following in their narrative, which is also available here:
The Park County Woolgrowers were avid boosters of sheep production during the 1920s. Officers of the organization in 1929 included Edward Mills, Harold Chalmers, and Kenneth Chalmers. Other leading sheepmen of Park County included Hollis R. Mills, Arthur Buckley, and the Singleton brothers, who were described as doing great work in promoting the industry.

From the Exclusion Zone: Report 3.1
(Personnel Note from Red Hood: “I have the urge to murder the hell out of these Ghost Investigation Ward dudes, reasons below”)
Amity Park: Report on Residents Interactions with Ghosts and the GIW
So, lets get this done shall we? The residents of Amity Park are sturdy folk, most can duke it out with the normal Ghosts that come through to our side of things on the regular and as such You’d think that casualties would be low whenever a Ghost Fight happens right? Wrong.
The final Amity Park Police Department report reads as follows.
To Mayor Masters,
I understand the need for the GIW, truly I do, but we feel safe with Phantom alone, and besides, the GIW cause Massive amounts of collateral damage whenever deployed, worse than any Fenton involved operation, hell I’d rather have the Fentons on the force just to prevent the GIW from being in town.
In the last month alone the GIW have destroyed four businesses, disrupted lessons at ALL of our schools, placed FOUR OF MY DEPUTIES in critical condition and have interfered with emergency Services. We have also had to eject GIW Agents from the Hospital a total of FOUR HUNDRED TIMES in the last month, and don’t even get me started with the Home Invasions without warrants.
And the final nail, Phantom, who might I add is a child ghost has come to me with concerns of corruption, admittedly I attempted to arrest him as is the law with the Anti-Ecto Acts your oh so proud of, but he evaded capture.
Lastly, I would like to report I am mustering up support from the Town to muster seventeen new Officers to assist in dealing with the increased crime rate that we seem to be suffering since the Exclusion Zone got set up. I will also be trying to send this report to other Sheriffs, Police Departments, Etc. out of town and county, maybe that will end this madness.
Vlad, it’s been THREE YEARS, I’m tired of this siege, don’t you think it’s time to end.
Captain George Oliver Wrathum
Suffice to say, this is one of many documents I acquired from a Officer in hiding. Who last saw his shift mates getting picked up by GIW agents at “The Spindle” a cop bar that is currently abandoned, I found the owner who is currently comatose in the hospital for head trauma.
I have made contact with some Ghosts since my last report, will send report when ready, assistance call stands.

Fuck it, making a character out of this guy cause I think he's hot
SPOILERS FOR HAZBIN HOTEL!
⚠️TW: MEDICAL MALPRACTICE MENTIONED, CANON TYPICAL VIOLENCE.⚠️
Tumblr media
Name:
He only referred to himself as "The doctor" in hell. Real name is "Lenus strychnine"
First name meaning: Healer
Last name meaning: a poison often used in poisonings
Death year / age
Late 1800s, 1880-1890.
Status
Dead (?) ((Depends))
Rank in hell
A past overlord of hell before being toppled by Alastor. Known as the doctor demon.
Reason he was sent to hell
Was a doctor that would kill his patients through poisoning them, neglect and mistreatment.
How he ran his section
He would help injured sinners so they were in his debt, forcing them to either work for him as medical staff or as a test patient. His section was a massive hospital building and grounds, wasn't gigantic but it was large and infamous.
How he collected souls
He would send teams of nurses and lower ranking doctors to scout out sinners or imps after extermination day and treat them in his hospital. Then if they got better, he would force the sinner to pay up with their service through a role in his hospital either permanent patient or medical staff. Had connections with (at the time) a small county of Cannibal town to offer them dead bodies in exchange for help and deals.
Personality
Pompous, inquisitive, medically adventurous, risk taker, apathetic to most, soft spot for young sinners, reserved, composed, reasonable, firm. (Basic personality)
Looks
A round headed figure with three eyes all on one side, his left eye being an X to hint at his death, long doctors coat that doubles as a face mask, rubber protective gloves, horns petruding from the side of his head like a bulls, a red skull with orange eyes which was how his organisation was recognised.
His appearance came from how his patients would draw him as they were dying and hallucinating him.
Relationships
Me (/j).
Knew of Zestial and was acquainted before being overthrown.
Had tried to treat Alastor as a patient to force him to work which resulted in his demise.
His relationship with the public: they feared the doctor as he was known to turn people you knew into a form of their former selves if working for him while there were only rumours about his patients. Reports from lurking sinners say his staff were found dumping sinners near the cannibals residence but never confirmed. Lives as a myth now to most sinners.
Songs he reminds me of
(yes very inspired by MLP infections, not ashamed)
⚠️Can be upsetting/unsettling. They aren't scary BUT If you don't like creepy music, skip. Take care⚠️
Basic, classic creepy. Not very creepy ↓
Can be unsettling, sounds like a tune you'd find on a record. ↓
Mostly feels like strange nostalgic. ↓
Classic creepy, be respectful as it is an album trying to portray dementia ↓
Classic creepy, be respectful as it is an album trying to portray dementia ↓
Mostly just unsettling warnings for this one though not bad ↓
(posted about him on tiktok too LOL)
This is just the basics, I like him a lot.
These are all headcanon's. I don't own this character or design. All rights reserved to spindle horse.

"A curse ? What curse ?
"You mean you havent noticed ?"
The witch is frowning under the brim of her pointy hat. She retrieves a notebook from one of the pouches hanging from her belt, flippes rapidly the pages.
"It is you though. Joanne Montaigu, born april 12 at 12h43, at Plainsborough hospital, eastern county. Right ?"
Joanne nods, unsettled to be known by a stranger. The information is not a secret, it's just unusual for it to known by people who have had no reason to look at her birth certificate.
"Yes but... what curse ? I dont turn into a monster at night or under the full moon. I dont have bad luck more than others, good things happened to me as much as bad ones."
"You mean no one told you ?"
"Look, my break ends in a few minutes, could you be less cryptic, maybe ?"
The witch bites her lip. Is she seriously hesitating to tell the truth ? Is she still considering keeping her secret after coming all this way ? Joanne crosses her arms and give her a stern look. That witch interrupted her in the middle of her episod and she won't get to learn what happens to her characters until she gets home tonight.
"I have cursed you.... to fall into a deep sleep... on your 16th birthday... upon touching a spindle"
"Why ??"
"Your mother took the last skeins of glittery purple yarn at the craft store. I was having a bad day"
Joanne feels a bit sorry for the lady. She can understand that, especially having started working in retail on the week-ends. The amount of people having a bad day and taking it on others is staggering. Sometimes she'd rather they curse the babies of other patrons than yell at her. It would be bad for the babies but, oh, one less moment of verbal abuse directed at her...
"Are you sure that's what the curse was and not being plagued by the worst customers on earth ?"
"I fear that's just what the food industry is like. And yes, i'm sure, the craft store had a sale on spindle at the time. That's how i got the idea"
Joanne nods. So that's why her mom stopped knitting and weaving after she was born and switched to sewing and embroidering. She said she had switched hobbies because she was concerned for her safety.
"I guess I should ask my mom to be clearer when warning me about things. I guess craft stores arent really forbidden to minors ?"
She can see the witch keeping herself from laughing.
"No, no they are not. Would you like me to undo the curse ?"
"What's the catch ?"
"No catch, i just dont want your death on my conscience. If you prick your finger on a spindle and get an infection it won't be on me. That's all i want. A clear conscience and no trial for accidental homicide"
When she gets home that night, Joanne prys her entire medical history from her mother. Turns out that "strawberries are bad for you" meant she was allergic to them and that her insistence she wear gloves outside since her 15th birthday was ver attempt at protecting her. Her mom is going to have to learn how to stop sugar-coating life to her. But that's okay because now she's free of the curse, with all the time in the world. She might even go to a craft store, without gloves.
The witch begs your forgiveness for cursing you as a baby; she was young and hot-headed, and would you like her to undo the curse? You aren’t sure what to say as this is the first you’ve heard about any of this.

Benjamin Franklin Coppess House
209 Washington St.
Greenville. OH
The Benjamin Franklin Coppess House is a historic Queen Anne and Stick-Eastlake style house located at 209 Washington Street (State Routes 49/121) in Greenville, Ohio. Its builder, Benjamin Coppess, was a farmer and local government official in Darke County and the grandson of one of the county's earliest pioneers. Built in 1882, it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This historic residence is made more beautiful by the extraordinary flower gardens planted expertly by the current resident which accent the property and period structures (gazebo/pavilion) within.
Featuring an unusually detailed Stick-Eastlake brick facade, the Coppess House is a T-shaped building that is supported by a stone foundation; the roof is asphalt, and minor elements of stone are also visible. A large enclosed porch and a veranda wrap around the "lower" portion of the "T," which faces the street, while above and behind the porch, placed at the base of the "T," sits a large bay window. The porch is among the most significant components of the building, due to elements such as exquisitely detailed arches formed of tiny spindles, which sprout from columns meant to resemble massive table legs. One must walk under one such arch to use the porch's main entrance, located on one of its corners, and three more such arches are placed on the front and on the side to either side of the entrance. Small gables are placed over the porch's main entrance and a subsidiary one, decorated with small sculptures, both carved and molded.
On March 10, 1978, the Coppess House was listed on the National Register of Historic Places, qualifying because of its historically significant architecture; it is one of two such houses on Washington Street, along with the Leftwich House elsewhere in the same block. As well as its distinctive porch, the house is historically significant because of a bathroom — it is believed to have been the first Greenville building with a flush toilet.

The Vanished Town of New Manchester
Sweetwater Creek is a fast-flowing tributary of the Chattahoochee River in Douglas County, just west of Atlanta. Here entrepreneurs constructed a 300-foot-long wooden mill dam to impound the stream and dug a long millrace to provide power to Sweetwater Mill which sported a 50,000-pound waterwheel. The seventeen-building complex was dominated by a textile mill but also had a shoe factory and flour mills and gristmills. At five stories, it was the tallest building in the Atlanta region, and its ninety looms and 6,000 spindles daily produced 750 yards of cotton and wool cloth used by the Confederate Army. One hundred works, primarily women and 400 young dependents occupied mill houses in the community of New Manchester.
In this isolated region, the Civil War itself seemed far away, but the conflict intruded even here. In July 1864, Union cavalry commanded by Lieutenant Colonel Silas Adams and Major Haviland Thompkin entered New Manchester to find the mills producing at top capacity. On July 9, Thompkin ordered his six artillery pieces, a battery of twelve-pounder Napoleons, to shatter the mill dam. Troopers splashed kerosene over the mill complex and set the community aflame.
The true crime then occurred. Five hundred women and children were escorted to Marietta with only the belongings they could carry and put on a train for Indiana. Legend says their treatment was brutal, and none ever returned home. The truth, though cruel enough, does not reach such mythical proportions. Many of the women found respectable employment, and some made it back to Georgia.
The mills at New Manchester, remote from transportation, were never reconstructed. The site of New Manchester is now within Sweetwater Creek State Park (Thornton Road exit off I-20, west of Atlanta). A trail follows the millrace beside the beautiful creek to the haunting multiple-story ruins of the textile mill.
Synthia Stewart was a nine-year-old participant in this tragedy. Decades later, known as Granny Boyd, she spoke her account to an Edison recording cylinder: "The Northern men told women in the factory to get themselves at home and get 'em a little tad of clothes, some for the chil'n and a suit for themselves if they could-what they could carry in their arms. . . . . And if they didn't get out by a certain time, they'd set the thing afire."

Over the past two weeks, I've been spending my Sundays at Northwest Yarns, a local yarn mercantile in Bellingham, WA. Why? Well, I've been learning the ancient and still very necessary art of hands spinning yarn, and after plying together two ounces of white and brown handspun—which involved wetting it and summarily beating it against a table—I ended up with amor 2/3 of a yarn colorway that I'm calling "Nostalgic Treat" because it looks like so many of those delicious 90s and 00s chocolate-vanilla snacks we love so much. I won't be using this skein but instead will be saving it as a memory of where I started and eventually, how far I've come.
This was such a beautiful learning experience for me and has become something I'll continue to do. My larger goal is to present my own handspun yarn at the county and state level, but that's at least a year off: my goal right now is just to learn and enjoy the process over and over again.
So look forward to seeing more pictures of my spinning: I've already got some beautiful roving on my spindle, ready to go!

Who are the Spindles anyway? [Part 2]
Continued from part 1
It is not known if any of the other Spindles in the same cemetery are related. We can easily find Hollis R. Spindle (1930-1998). However, Robert B. Spindle does not seem to be on Find a Grave currently.
I found Ida and Berthelot's marriage in a Colorado marriage index [2]:
Tumblr media
Thanks to a profile of Ida, whose full name was apparently Ida Stella Mills, we can find her in the 1910 and 1920 censuses, with Hollis R. Mills (1877-1934) listed as her father and Blanche Ellis (1879-1949) as her mother [3]. In 1910 they  were living in the El Paso County Hospital in El Paso, California, and in 1920 they were living in Hartsel, Park, Colorado.  It is clear from the censuses, shown below, that she had a brother named Edward. We can't be sure about Elizabeth Chalmers just yet.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
For Ida, she is listed in Hollis Spindle's 1998 obituary, which is indexed completely incorrectly on Family Search, and her obituary is abstracted in one record. [4] Beyond this, one can also find Ida, with her husband Berthelot in the 1930 and 1940 censuses, living in Park, Colorado. It shows she has two sons, Hollis R. and Robert B., just as was noted in her obituary!
Tumblr media

1940 census
Tumblr media
On Family Search there is even a photo of "Ida Mills Spindle and Berthelot Swenson Spindle" as a user named mikespindle calls it, with the year not known:
Tumblr media
As for Ida Spindle, we know from the Windsor Beacon that she hosted a matrons club in 1960, that she was part of the Eastern Star in 1962 (along with the Garden Club), was a member of the OES in 1964 (and in 1962), along with many other topics.

Sterling A. Brown // Old Lem
I talked to old Lem and old Lem said:           “They weigh the cotton           They store the corn                 We only good enough                 To work the rows;           They run the commissary           They keep the books                 We gotta be grateful                 For being cheated;           Whippersnapper clerks           Call us out of our name                 We got to say mister                 To spindling boys           They make our figgers           Turn somersets           We buck in the middle                 Say, “Thankyuh, sah.”                 They don’t come by ones                 They don’t come by twos                 But they come by tens.
