Day 7 of the Vetteltea Advent Calendar

You’re such a diamond, literally one of my favorite people to speak to! Thank you for always being in the DM’s for me to scream about Spider-Man, here’s to hoping Yuri wins best voice actor at the game award tonight!

The white clock resting atop of the mantlepiece ticked over, it was now midnight. Your attention didn’t dwindle, placing the final silvery presents underneath the Christmas Tree, making sure the gift tags were secure, ‘Love, Santa,’ being written in loopy handwriting. 

This was the first Christmas that your daughter had been invested in; last year, she had been just a little bit too young to understand the festivities. However, this year it had seemed the moment the calendar had tipped into December, the spirit of Christmas itself had inherited your daughter. Meeting Santa, taking her ice-skating, even laboriously going around seven different stores because she wanted to find the perfect present for her father. 

Her dad in question had just stepped into the lounge, one hand holding a plate which once contained cookies, the dessert in question resting in between his teeth. The other had a glass of milk, already half-drunk, ready to place the two treats they had left out a few hours ago by the fireplace. Your eyes raise, seeing the bright orange carrots had yet to be eaten. 

“You’ve gotta take a bite of the carrot.” You plead. “She’s going to think Rudolph didn’t like his carrots.” 

“Nobody likes carrots.” Daniel huffs, but reluctantly the love he expresses for his wife shines through, gnawing on the carrot in order to make the charade more believable. A smile returns to your face, adjusting the plate to sit in front of the flickering fireplace, the warmth still filling the lounge. Daniel takes you by surprise, sinking to the floor and pulling you into his chest. 

His hands are warm, snaking around your waist as he adjusts your position, his long legs opening to rest either side of your own, his chest pressed tightly into your back, chin resting on your shoulder as he pressed the sloppiest kiss to your cheek you think you had ever received. 

The two of you hum in contentment, watching the golden flames flicker, shades of orange dancing with one another, engulfing the room in a warm, orange glow.

“Do you know what this reminds me of?” Daniel murmurs, eyes entranced by the fire. He immediately breaks into a grin when your head snaps to look at him, eyebrows raised and seemingly about to headbutt him.

“Do not say Chris-”

“Christmas 2012!” He breaks into laughter. Your cheeks tint pink at the memory, although distant in time, always strong in your mind. It had been Christmas Eve; you and Daniel had been just friends at the time, sitting around a fire on the beach. The then-rookie had been invited by Mark Webber, your older brother, and had joined the fire alongside Vettel, Hamilton, Alonso, and of course yourself. 

The fire had died out, and one-by-one, your brother and his friends had retired to bed, all except for you and the newest driver, still engrossed in a conversation the two of you had started having an hour ago. You didn’t know when, but at some point, you shifted, eyes becoming heavy and leaning back into Daniel’s chest. His words were still falling from his lips, though they soon softened, pressing a soft kiss to your cheek, thanking you for listening to everything he had to say. 

The dynamic had shifted after that day; at every race you attended, Daniel would go out of his way to come and find you, if only to see you for a few moments. He had to hear your voice, your laughter. It wasn’t until the Chinese Grand Prix, where after two DNF’s, he finally finished in the points, that he built up the courage to kiss you, his words as lifting as his driving had been that day. 

Mark hadn’t found out until the following year, his eyes raising when you told him of your plans to go to the Red Bull garage, despite the fact he wouldn’t be racing. He knew you loved Sebastian, but the moment didn’t hit until he saw you that afternoon, dressed in a ‘Danny Ric 3’ shirt. It hadn’t taken long for him to give his blessing, simply warning the fellow racer if he ever dared to hurt you, he would have a long line of drivers to answer to. 

A little over ten years later, he had kept that promise; with both a wedding ring on your hand and a daughter with his curls and your eyes, you would never forget that evening. You lie back in your husband’s arms, letting his soft lips trace against your skin, humming in contentment as the fire continues to burn. 

“Just so you know.” He brushes his cheek against yours. “Our daughter is never going to a fire on the beach.” You can’t help the laugh this time, lying back and grinning up to your husband. 

“Oh come on.” You trail off. “There are worse things to do on a Beach.” 

“You’re right.” He immediately cuts you off. “Remember Mark’s Birthday-”

“Daniel!”

@tellthemeerkatsitsfine, while I read your wonderful essay, I just wanted to jot down some of the timestamps of Jon and Russell talking about John during their show, where they refer to him by his proper name. I haven't done so in past episodes, but from where I am, I'm adding bits that I notice and will publish them from drafts soon/edit the post and add more as they come.

18 March 2007: ~57:20 "Our old flatmate John is really scared of the dark. I used to jump out at him and he'd get really scared".

8 April 2007: ~57:40 Mark Olver is accused by Jon of being a bad driver, but a better driver than Russell Howard, which Jon says is no big achievement, insinuating that Russell is a really distracted/bad driver. Mark says here, I'm a better driver than John Robins, to which Jon doesn't seem to agree (or disagree), saying, "we'll give him the right to reply next week." (This was during Russell's Australia trip, the second week that Mark co-hosted and before Robins sat in.)

Interesting to me because throughout the XFM years and even to the present day, John prides himself on being a good driver. Elis has literally said "you parallel park beautifully" to cheer John up on a bad day. Was John a worse driver in 2007? Did the improvement happen sometime during the intervening 7 years? IIRC (why the fuck do I know this) these were the Lanos years. I have heard John talk fondly of those, so I don't know.

8 April 2007: 01:17:20, Jon mentions he'll be at a Champions League game with John Robins later that week. John is still regularly in touch with his old flatmates, and also is still well into football.

29 July 2007: 01:02:30, Jon mentions on air that Russell had to accompany John into a chocolate shop because he fancied the girl behind the counter. Robins bought Jon Richardson chocolates and then got angry when Jon (who had recently vowed to only eat fair-trade chocolate recently) didn't eat them.

11 November 2007: 00:46:00, Jon has invited his former housemates Russell, John and Mark to a Christmas dinner, but none of them replied to his text invite for three days. Jon catches up with Robins a few days later, and at the end of their meeting John says, ‘oh yeah I’m free on 18th’, making Jon even more mad about how Jo one is replying to his text.

2 December 2007: 00:13:00, Jon has bought everyone in the studio an advent calendar, he gives Russell a Spider-Man or Island Princess one, I can’t tell which is going to whom, but Jon chastises Russell for eating all his calendar sweets in one day. Russell corrects him, revealing that the compulsive sweet eater was actually John Robins, not him (Russell revealed he didn’t end up eating any chocolates, which probably had to do with him being in a diet).

Spider-Man Advent Day 12

What is today’s LEGO Advent item? Today we have another holiday item, a candy cane. This is Spider-man themed with red and blue coloration. There is also a wreath with a green bow? or Holly? I don’t get why it’s white with a green spot. But glad to see more Christmas in the calendar.It also bugs me that in the photo the LEGO name is not level. I’ll fix it on the build.
