Regulus flew into James’s arms when they met again. 

“We got it!” He whispered excitedly after they'd slipped out of the Manor, unseen. 

“Well done, love. Let’s get out of here,” James nodded to the others and they all disapparated. 

They hadn’t gone back to their camp. The plan was to go somewhere else first and destroy the Horcrux. They were somewhere in the Brecon Beacons. The wind howled around the wild mountain range. Their robes whipped around their legs and threatened to be torn off completely. 

“We need somewhere more covered!” Sirius called out, his voice stolen by the wind. 

“Come with me!” Remus yelled, holding out his hands to them. They all grabbed on. Regulus felt the familiar squeezing sensation as Remus apparated them again. 

The wind stopped, and they were inside a wooden shed. 

“Where are we?” Marcus asked, picking up a dusty watering can. 

“My da’s old potting shed.” Remus shrugged. “It’s out of the wind at least. Regulus moved to the sturdy-looking bench and moved aside the collection of spider web-coated seed trays and mini-plant pots before taking the notebook out of his pocket. 

For the first time, he looked at it properly. It was definitely muggle in origin. It had a date printed on the front, 1943. So it was a diary, he thought. He opened it hoping to find some hidden secrets. It was blank. The only writing was the slightly smudged name on the first page. T. M. Riddle. Well, at least they had the right item. 

“Damn, that thing smells awful,” Marcus complained, holding his nostrils closed with his thumb and forefinger. Regulus ignored him and put the diary on the workbench. He took the box containing the basilisk fang out as well and carefully extracted it. 

He held it up gingerly to his brother. 

“Do you want to do the honours? You were the one to get it after all,” 

“Narcissa literally threw it at me. I wouldn’t exactly say I got it,” Sirius barked out a laugh, but carefully took the fang. He held it above the diary. He was about to plunge it into the diary when a shimmering form began to break free of the pages. 

“Quick, just do it!” Regulus urged Sirius on. “Before whatever that is can fully form. Sirius stabbed down with intent. He stabbed the fang so hard it went straight through the diary and stuck in the wood beneath. 

A loud scream escaped from within the pages as waves of ink flooded out of the diary, coating Sirius from his arms down and covering the dusty floor. Then everything was still and the destroyed Horcrux lay there, just a diary again, albeit a diary with a large steaming hole through the middle of it. 

It took Sirius a second to wrench the fang from the wood, but once he had, he returned it to its box and handed it back to Regulus. 

“Shit, Moony, the fangs burnt through the potting table. How pissed is your dad going to be when he sees it?” Sirius grimaced after he’d vanished all the spilt ink from himself and the shed. 

“Not much,” Remus replied sadly. “He doesn’t use it any more, not since Mum died,” Sirius wrapped his arms around Remus and whispered what sounded like sweet words in his ear, but Regulus couldn’t make them out. 

“Okay, let’s go home,” Sirius said as he pulled away from Remus, but didn’t let go of his hand. James grabbed Regulus’s hand and Marcus rolled his eyes. 

“Because you can’t apparate without holding hands. Bleh!” He fake gagged and dissapparated. 

“Poor Marcus, he needs to get laid,” Sirius snickered, before bringing Remus’s hand to his lips and kissing his knuckles and apparating away. 

“Just us, love,” James said, crowding Regulus against the neglected shed’s wall. Regulus surged forward and attached himself to James’s face. It was over. They’d found and destroyed another Horcrux.

“Can we go back to Potter Manor?” He asked, between gasping breaths. James groaned into his mouth. 

“Oi! Who’s in there?!” A voice shouted from outside the shed. 

“Shit, Lyall!” James cursed. He wrapped his arms around Regulus more securely and apparated them to Potter Manor. He pulled out his mirror and called into it. “Hey, Padfoot,” James waited for a moment, and then Sirius’s voice came through. 

“Why are you calling me on the mirror? Where have you gone? Have you gone back to Potter Manor?!”

“Er, yeah, change of plans. We need to check the library again. See you in the morning, yeah. Oh, and can you tell Remus that Lyall came out and yelled at us? He didn’t see who was in the shed, but he might have gone in by now. Love ya,” He blew a huge kiss at the mirror and snapped it shut.

“He’s going to kill you for that, you know,” Regulus couldn’t hide the grin spreading across his face. 

“Nah, he loves me too much. He might take a page out of your book though and hex my bollocks off the next time he sees me,” He grimaced. 

“I’d like to see him try,” Regulus narrowed his eyes dangerously. James chuckled, and they walked into Potter Manor, greeted by an irate Flitsy, who had not been expecting them and had nothing ready. It took James a good twenty minutes to calm her down and promise that it wasn't a problem. Regulus headed upstairs. He needed a shower after everything they’d been through the last few hours.

🕰️🌌 makes me think of the Skyfaced Clock and Eventide, which is fitting for a book that will explore more of Mog and her past/origins... the clock later on also makes me think of Ghostly Hours!

🕯️is likely the Black Parade. I really hope the "grr" snippet wasn't cut because I love it. I also hope the Parade isn't cancelled again because I'd love to see it through the perspective of Morrigan walking in it. If a Unit 920 member will have a "semi-importantish" role in the book, this would be the time to meet them.

🌳🎂 makes me think of the picnic snippet. Maybe a birthday for another 919 member?

🐙 intrigues me. Will we see an Octopuswun? I want to see an Octopuswun.

⛪️ is the church emoji... would love to get more lore on religion in Nevermoor, the Wundrous Divinities and the Divine Thing, etc...

🐉🩸💀📰🐉... is someone going to get killed at a dragon tournament? Someone's going to get killed at a dragon tournament aren't they... would they be killed by a dragon? Could the cover relate to this? (Could the "HAWTHORNE?!?" relate to this?) 🤔

Also the "teen Mog" snippet has Morrigan saying "I was there, I could help with the investigation" and I feel like it makes sense for her to be at a dragon tournament to support Hawthorne..... hmmm 🤔 🧐 👀

EDIT: did see someone say the spider could indicate Octavia, which makes way more sense and I do hope to see her? it? again.

🎂 the second time makes me think of Morrigan's birthday, since we know she turns 14 and it's "later in the book" and after the Christmas tree.

😭🥰😳😬 I have no clue if these are all related but I think it's kinda a funny sequence of emojis, lol. Perhaps Jupiter finds out about the apprenticeship at the end of the book? Perhaps this is something to do with Mog's mom, who Silverborn might start to explore? No clue. Excited to find out!

➼ What were my writing plans for 2022?

❌ Finish The Ruby Falls by April, published by October

✅ Finish some of the then-68 WIPs from 2021 and prior

I managed 7 - 5 Oblivion fanfics, and 2 Starbound fanfics. 7 is better than 0, so I'm counting this objective as completed.

➼ Work I'm most proud of

It's a tossup between Abecean Blue and Tales of the Starbound: The Barkeep's Tale. I'm fond of the descriptions and flashbacks in Abecean Blue, but The Barkeep's Tale shows just how much I've grown and learned as a writer.

The Barkeep's Tale was started in 2015, and while admittedly it was part of a NaNo and I knew then it wasn't perfect, I thought it was reasonably well crafted. But when I rewrote it - nearly from scratch - and read it back, I realised just how much I've improved - mostly in the last 2 years.

➼ Work that shows I'm still learning

The Need for What We Can't Have, Long Past Dawn, and Strawberry Fizz. I can't write men. I can't write gay men. I can't write romance between men! Why are men so hard? (puns not intended)

All of those pieces feel tremendously flat to me. The descriptions are fine, but when it comes to men emoting, the dialogue... I just don't feel there's the same pizzazz as if you asked me to write a feral she-goblin.

➼ Breakdown of 2022

There have been a lot of IRL things going on this year, and I just haven't felt as creative as I have the past few years. The trip to Iceland was inspiring, yet that and the trip to Denmark took huge chunks out of my year (both were nearly 2 weeks each).

That being said, when I look at my stats for complete fics over the years, I can see that 2022 was nearly on par with 2020, with 21 vs 27. And even though I finished more works in 2021, my word count was much lower. I feel like I'm now at a happy balance between word count and finished works.

I also feel like I'm finishing a lot more things recently, even if they are fanfic, where historically I was writing novels and then running out of steam on them. I'm not sure if I can apply that to the past novels I've never finished/ edited enough to publish. Honestly, I don't know what I want to do with them at all...

Tangled Web

Pairing: Peter Parker x Reader

Summary: When Spider-Man crashes into your yard and gets tangled in your lights, you spend the night untying him.

Word Count: 920

Peter presses his palm as his web shooters click and fail, signaling an empty web cartridge. He misses his next web, falling onto a tree and getting tangled in it’s lights.

You run to your window at the sound of the crash, opening the door when you spot Spider-Man.

“S-sorry!” The hero says, looking between you and the lights surrounding him.

“You’re—,” you begin before he interrupts.

“Spider-Man. Yeah, I know.”

You gape at the lenses on his mask as they grow and shrink, hinting at his facial expressions.

“I’m just going to get out of here.” He stretches to break free from your lights when you stick your hand out.

“Wait!” You shout and he pauses his movements, the lights around him withdrawing. “You're going to break my lights.”

“I’m sure you can replace them,” he says with a nervous laugh.

“They were expensive,” you cross your arms, “and they took forever to put up.” What kind of hero shows up to your house, breaks your things, and expects you to replace them?

“I—.” Peter looks around, finally noticing the now disheveled look of your yard. He never really thinks about the messes he makes; saving New York is usually enough compensation, but since this is all on him, he isn't sure of what to say.

“You can replace them later if you're in a hurry,” you say and his lenses contract.

“How much were they?”

“80.”

“80 dollars—that’s ridiculous!” He shouts, his voice squeaking.

“They were a bundle,” you say, laughing, “and they looked great until you got here.”

“Well, I’m kinda short at the moment," he trails off.

“Look, if you don’t have the money then just let me untie you,” you say, crouching in front of him, and you watch as his lenses contract.

“Fine,” he mumbles, “but my mask stays on.”

You nod in agreement, going for the first knot you see and working your way through it. A couple minutes of silence go by when you decide to make small talk.

“So, why are you out here anyway?” You ask, glancing at his lenses.

“Oh, you know,” he begins, “just your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man, running out of web fluid and falling into a strangers yard—happens all the time!” He quips and you smirk in response.

“You catch a lot of bad guys?”

“No, tonight was quiet,” he grunts, tilting his head as you unravel the lights. “God, I hate quiet nights,” he adds, adjusting his position, “it’s like, does anyone even appreciate how long it takes me to come out here?”

“I do,” you reassure as his lenses dilate, “just not when you ruin my yard.”

“I’ll try not to next time,” he retorts and you undo a string of the lights, setting them down in the empty space beside you.

“What were you up to?” Spider-Man asks, curiosity laced in his voice.

“Before you got here?” You ask, working on the next string of lights as he nods. “Nothing, really.”

“Oh, come on!” He shouts, rocking back as his lenses contract, and you grab his arm to hold him in place. “You must’ve been doing something before I got here.”

“Yeah, but it wasn’t anything important,” you reply, cracking a sore finger, “just catching up on some assignments.”

“Sounds pretty important to me,” he shrugs.

“Not saving a bodega important,” you say, unraveling another string of the lights and setting them beside you.

“You heard about that?” He asks, tilting his head as you nod. “Guess I am pretty cool." He wiggles his eyes causing you to laugh.

“Whatever." You unravel the last string of lights and set them aside.

“Yes!” Spider-Man shouts, doing a flip to his feet, “I’m a free man!”

“One of the lights broke,” you whine, pointing at the tiny shards of glass on the ground as you hold up the broken bulb.

“I’m also not reliable for any damages.”

“That’s fair,” you say, sighing as you grab your lights and set them in front of the trees they were on prior to the accident.

“I can help you put them back up,” he offers, scratching his masked head as your mouth curves into a smileand you hand him the lights.

He grabs them, doing a couple flips around your trees, trying his best to arrange your lights to how they were before.

When they are all set up, the two of you plug them in, turning them on and watching as they flicker, eventually shining bright and colorful.

“Looks good,” you say, entranced by the alluring lights as Spider-Man hums in agreement. “Yeah,” he replies, gaping at you, “at least I helped one person today."

“And all it took was causing the problem in the first place,” you retort and Peter smiles under his mask, unbeknownst to you.

Noticing his stare, you begin to feel sheepish. “Well, thanks!” You say, rubbing your arm. “I guess you’re pretty busy right?”

“Yeah... yeah!” He shouts, suddenly realizing that he had spent half an hour in your backyard. “I should go,” he says, solemnly. This was the best conversation he’s had in a while and he doesn't want it to end but staying in a stranger's yard would only give Jameson another reason to call him a menace.

“I’ll see you later!” He shouts, waving you goodbye as he jumps the fence and you’re left in your yard, staring at the radiant lights as you wonder what that means.
