These are two parts from my future hualian fic from the first chapter. It has spooky elements, beware.

Six years ago Xie Lian swore to never step foot in this cursed building, and yet here he was. The place hasn't changed a bit since he left. Pale blue walls, white tile floors and heavy doors made out of metal were more familiar to him than his own house. He used to come here at six in the morning and leave at the dead of night, reporting every flickering light on his way to the exit. Flickering lights were a bad sign in a place like this. The corridors were always coated in eerie silence. No natural light could get inside, so it was impossible to know what time of day it was. There used to be a clock on the wall, but it didn't last. It wasn't a good idea to have fragile objects out in the open, especially near Xie Lian. The doors weren't labeled, but there were small differences between them. Some had dents, some were scratched, some melted in places. Since Xie Lian left, the door to his office got changed, and now it looked almost too good compared to the other ones.

He hesitated in front of the door. Then sighed and pressed his id card to the scanner. It opened without a sound.

Xie Lian flipped through the files while they were talking, only taking note of the name given to the entity. He didn't like reading what other people saw before going into an encounter. Xie Lian was seventeen when an entity known as The Stalker found him. Even when that fear manifested in the form of sleep paralysis, a pale white mask looking at him from the ceiling in the dark and silent room, its texture a mix of human skin and silicon, its eyes bottomless pits of ink, it was just because of stress. Exams were approaching, after all.

First time he went to the doctor was after the demon appeared in his kitchen. It was hard to call what he saw a human face, but it was clearly imitating one. It was glowing, only two empty eye sockets and a smiling mouth remaining. Xie Lian froze in place, not daring to look away. The creature slowly melted, dissolving in the darkness. But it didn't disappear. Xie Lian knew it was there, always watching, always following, just not visible now.

His Laoshi, Mei Niangqing, found him pretty quickly. He promised Xie Lian answers and a job in the Institute if only he let them study what made him «special». He agreed with no hesitation, hoping to get rid of the creature, who became progressively more violent with every passing day. None of them knew how much the situation was going to escalate.

Despite his anxiety, the calming rhythm of train wheels hitting the rails slowly lulled Xie Lian to sleep.

My account does not have an ice dps, so I would benefit from Jingliu quite a lot, and I hear she's really f2p friendly, so as someone who doesn't have the time to spend too much on the game that's good to hear.

On the other hand, Luocha would be great as a healer, he has aoe - debuff removal, and would be a great healer for a second team. However I do have HuoHuo.

I love both of the characters, which is why I'm also struggling to choose which one to go for. I'm not guaranteed either so I'm not sure on who to test my luck.

Kiana

If Kiana chooses to stay by you, she will never leave. She’s already lost Mei and Himeko and she refuses to loose you too. She doesn’t want to take you for granted, so she’ll take you on dates often- or at least when she has time.

Her favorite place that she’s gone to with you is the amusement park. It brings back memories of when she just a student at Saint Freya’s- a time when everyone was truly happy. She loves sharing these memories with you, not just because she though you should know, but because she trusts you enough to tell you about them.

Usually your dates will be a spur-of-the-moment thing, always happening at random. Sometimes she’ll just take you by the hand and drag you to wherever she wants to go, and sometimes it’s you two had planned weeks before. Either way, you both have fun in the end.

When you’re on your date, she’ll cling to you like a child, jumping around and rambling on about how you’re her favorite person (other than Mei of course). For example, if you were walking around town, she would be all over the place. It was impossible to tell where you would be taken to next, but that wasn’t necessarily a bad thing.

If you ever get tired, just let her know! It won’t take long for her to calm down and drag you home again. Either way, she loves hanging out with you, and she would do it every day if she could!

Mei

Mei prefers quieter outings with you. She values spending quality time with you, not just running around to different stores. Most of your dates are calm, but occasionally, she’ll request to take you on low rank missions if you haven’t seen her in while.

Mei’s favorite thing to do is cook with you. She likes teaching you about different techniques and dishes, especially if you don’t know how to cook. She often makes you Borscht- which is Bronya’s favorite, and it now happens to be yours as well. Mei prefers cooking with you, rather than cooking alone.

When the Valkyrie exams come up, study dates wil be absolutely necessary. She will never let you slack off on your work- you need that knowledge to become a Valkyrie, and she doesn’t want to leave you behind if she passes and you don’t. She won’t be harsh though, just adamant since she cares about you.

Another thing she likes to do with you is visit various Coffee shops. Everything about them just calms her down. The atmosphere, the smell, the soft sounds of voices in the background. All of this is practically ethereal for her- not to mention the fact that you’re with her too!

Mei finds it irritating that you can’t see each other more often, but she’s glad that you understand that the existence of humanity depends on her duties. However, if she has a day off, it’s guaranteed that she’ll seek you out.

Baal

Baal isn’t very keen on dates. It’s not that she hates them- no, she actually quite enjoys spending time with you. It’s just that she just has no idea what such a thing entails. How is it any different from just hanging around with you?

You’ll have to explain to her what it means before taking her on one. After you’ve finished, Baal will nod her head, brows furrowed in confusion. It made a little bit more sense now, but it still seemed pointless. She wondered if there was a specific reason for these things called, “dates”, of if they were just for fun.

After Baal goes on a few outings with you, she starts to understand the appeal of them. She could spend time with you and show you the things she liked! Why hadn’t she thought of it before now? On the morning of your first date, unnatural excitement shot through her heart. This prompted her to spiral into a rabbit hole of nerves.

Much later into your relationship, the Raiden Shogun often reads to you on your dates. She’ll take you to different publishing houses and libraries, just to find the perfect book for that specific day. It’s usually a romance novel, but she’s always open to suggestions. After you’ve completed the book, the two of you will discuss the storyline over a couple glasses of Dango Milk.

No matter what you’ve done that day, you’ll always head back home to cuddle and sleep. Despite the electric walls that have surrounded the Shogun’s heart, you never fail to break through them.

Yae

Yae simply enjoys talking to you. She doesn’t feel the need to do something extravagant with you when you have the power of speech. At times, she may seem as if she’s putting you in the spot- but in truth, she just wants to hear you talk. Your voice is practically melodic to her, and the opinions that you have on the topics she brings up mean more her than you know.

She’s spent so many years alone, merely watching as her best friend trapped herself in her own mind, and it’s been even longer since she’s had a person to talk to. One thing she enjoys talking to you about is the Shrine’s history. It takes up a lot of time, and you never seem to get bored. Yae teases you about this sometimes, but in reality she’s grateful.

“Food market, mostly,” Pigsy said with a shrug as he adjusted a few reusable baskets in his hands. He must have had a lot on the list for the day or he was buying a lot in advance. “Thinkin of hitting up another place or two in the area if we got time, but nothing too strenuous.”

A bit of Spirit’s tension eased from their shoulders and spine at this. They’d been to the market plenty of times before, so even though it was out of the blue it wasn’t exactly that unusual for them. The last time they went had been with Pigsy and Tang, and while their fighting over which carrots looked “good enough” wasn’t the most… fun conversation to be present for, it was nice.

Pigsy had even bought them a snack, insisting there were no strings attached. No favors. Just a snack from a friend to a friend. And that memory was nice… nice enough to help elevate any extra anxiety still lingering in the demon’s spine (that came from the news anyway, the regular anxiety was as there as always).

“Well, best to head as quickly as possible?” They offered, following Pigsy as he lead the way. “Want to get there fast to get the pick of the best vegetables, right?”

“You’re speakin my language!”

The market was surprisingly calm and quiet. Maybe it was because it wasn’t one of the usual busy days, or maybe it was because of how early they were in the day, but instead of the loud bustle and clutter and yells of vendors there was just a set of clearly dedicated loyal customers and relaxed vendors making small talk.

“Oh, I forgot to mention,” Pigsy said suddenly as they made their way down to where he would usually buy root vegetables. “They do this sort of thing a couple times a month where the market isn’t open to the public for a couple hours. It’s a little somethin to help out the local restaurants and other businesses who come here for their supplies.”

“Is that why that guy at the entrance looked at me like I was about to steal a child’s lunch money?”

That hadn’t been fun at all. Until Pigsy had stepped up beside him Spirit thought they were genuinely in some sort of trouble they didn’t know about.

Then again. That happened a lot. Thinking they were in trouble they didn’t know about. Pigsy was trying to make sure that didn’t happen as much. “If I could tell their brain to stop it wouldn’t happen at all” was what he said when Spirit overheard him talking to Tang about them.

It wasn’t good to snoop, Spirit knew that, but… it was. Nice. Oddly nice. He wasn’t going to be able to just tell Spirit’s brain to stop telling them things, and before Spirit would be confused and maybe a little horrified at the idea, but after spending so much time with the pig demon it felt. Nice.

Their conversation continued on for a moment, Pigsy explaining what the market on these special days was like and how the deals here were so helpful and every stall they stopped at Pigsy made it a point to keep the conversation going with the vendor himself. Just open enough for Spirit to insert themselves if they wanted, though they didn’t except at the vendor selling oddly colored flowers (which led into a short explanation about how they were made) and an explanation of how many of the dried ones on sale were imported from other countries and difficult to find outside their stall.

They didn’t know why Pigsy was buying flowers, though. At least, not the specific reason. Dried, fresh, some with stems and some with only the heads. Some bulbs as well. Maybe he was going to try some more floral broths or flower infused noodles? He’d done that in the past apparently! And Spirit had watched him made odder things, experimental dishes that didn’t really change much with the old recipes so much as they simply added more depth to them.

Spirit did notice, however, most of the flowers he had purchased were… purple. Or, in the case of one, blue. An odd one out to be sure.

“Alright, we’re done!” Pigsy announced, smiling widely at his haul. Which, all things considered… wasn’t actually as much as Spirit expected. Still, a good haul. “We’re going to put this all away at the shop, I have an appointment with Sandy later but we’re not expected at any specific time so there isn’t really a need to rush.”

“AH, hold on just one moment!” The flower stall vendor said as he came out from behind his stall. “Pigsy, I want you both to have these. For being a wonderful return customer and for the nice conversation.”

Spirit watched as he tucked a purple flower behind Pigsy’s ear, a daisy if Spirit was correct. And then he did the same to them, making them tense in surprise. If they said anything after that Spirit didn’t realize due to their shock, but the next thing they registered was Pigsy gently guiding them out of the entrance.

Sandy was more than ready for them when they arrived, urging Spirit inside and to his couch while Pigsy and he talked about… something.

Spirit wasn’t paying as much attention as they normally would when they were immediately swarmed with cats.

Cats on their lap, cats on their arms, cats on their shoulders. Cats. Cats everywhere. So many cats.

“Uh… S-Sandy…” Spirit started, an uncertain chuckle bubbling up as another cat plopped down on their head. “Do your cats… smell fear? Or do I smell delicious? They’re vibrating very violently. And… rubbing against me. A lot. I mean, I know they’re purring but this is weird.”

Sandy turned toward Spirit, covering his mouth to keep himself from laughing at the sight.

“No, no they don’t and you do not,” he said with a shake of his head, and he gave a look toward Pigsy. “You probably got some catnip on you somehow at the market. You’re just their favorite person right now.”

“… oh,” Spirit breathed out, reaching up to pat one of the cats on his lap carefully. The cat let out a trill, rolling onto their back as they pressed harder into Spirit’s side. Spirit couldn’t help it. They gave in to the temptation to quote a video Mei showed him long ago. “… I have been chosen.”

They didn’t even pay attention to Sandy and Pigsy until something on a trey was placed on the table between all of them, the clinking jolting some of the cats and making them roll off Spirit (who was grateful for the use of their arms back).

“So… I was hoping you might want to taste test something I wanted to add to the menu for special occasions that Sandy is teaching me to make,” Pigsy said with a smile, gesturing to the trey. “He actually made these in advance, they take a long while to dry properly, but they’re supposed to be worth it. But I, uh, can’t guarantee anything.”

It was very… purple and blue. A clear cup filled with what Spirit assumed was blue tea and a purple… stick of some kind that seemed to be flowers dipped in sugar? The only thing that seemed to stand out was the tiny cup of what smelled like lemon juice between them.

“The stick is candied lavender!” Sandy explained, gesturing to the hardened blossom. “You can use it to stir the tea and add sweetness or just eat it as is! But before you choose, pour that little cup into the tea.”

Spirit raised an eyebrow, almost wondering if this was some kind of prank. It didn’t feel like Pigsy and Sandy would pull a prank like this but. Well. Who knows… but they wanted to trust that they weren’t so they did as asked, slowly pouring the lemon juice into… the…

“It’s turning purple,” Spirit whisper shouted, eyes wide and awed as the blue tea slowly turned from the brilliant blue to a more brilliant purple from the bottom of the cup up. “What. Purple? It’s purple! The tea changes colors!”

Pigsy chuckled, nodding his head with a wide smile. “Yup.”

“It’s called Butterfly Pea Flower tea,’ Sandy explained, smile just as wide. "Lemon and lime juice made it do that! It’s not really a rare tea, but we added some extra stuff to the lavender that should make it taste even better when you mix it all in. Go on, give it a try!”

Spirit looked between the two of them and picked up the lavender stick and tea cup, mixing them together as they sat back and took a sip.

It was… amazing. Earthy and slightly bitter from the lemon juice. There must have been honey as well as sugar in the lavender stick, bringing a bright sweetness to the drink. There was a bit of spice to it, maybe cinnamon, as well. It was nothing like anything Spirit had ever drank before. It was warm without being too hot, and combined with the purring of the cats surrounding them…

They realized they felt. Good. Not perfect, not completely relaxed. They didn’t know if that was possible. But they felt good. Happy.

“I think… I think people will love this.”

langa: lucio main. i know mei seems like the easy answer but i imagine he likes to wall ride because it’s sort of like skating. ends up with more damage done than healing because he forgets to switch off of speed boost

miya: sombra main, very sneaky and only member of the group minus cherry who’s actually good. gets 6 player EMPs and no one ever follows up on them because everyone is always busy throwing the game

shadow: exclusively plays roadhog and will leave the game if the other tank won’t swap. his only objective is to pull people off the map or hook enemy dva bombs into his own team. why do they even queue with him

joe: not allowed to choose any hero other than torbjorn because he’s horrible and the turret guarantees he has at least some value. spends more time fixing the turret than actually shooting which is just as well honestly

cherry: ana main. can easily heal 9k+ a game because he has to do it solo since langa is a moron. everyone is a moron. please help. also enjoys playing symmetra and echo but doesn’t get to because someone needs to heal

👓The moment Mey-Rin finds out that her darling suffers from insomnia a switch will turn on into her. Suddenly the clumsy and shy girl will be gone and a responsible and mature woman will instead appear.

👓She wants to know how long you already suffered from it, if there’s a reason for it and much more. She’ll listen to everything the s/o tells her without interrupting and asking questions. If there is a reason or a person that made them worry so much that they lost sleep due to it then Mey-Rin will find a way to take care of this person, hoping that her darling can sleep better after this.

👓If that doesn’t work or she can’t get rid for whatever reason then she’ll try to help you differently. Pillows to cuddle with, more blankets, warm milk with honey or tea, this girl will try everything she’s ever heard of. She’ll definitely ask Sebastian for advice since he knows a lot of things and if Sebastian tells her something that might help she’ll try it out immediately. She’ll even ask if it would help if she would sleep with you. If you say no she’ll respect your choice, but if you say yes then you can bet that she’ll most likely have a short heart attack, feeling overjoyed that you think that she can make you feel safe enough to sleep. She’ll cuddle you the whole night whilst whispering sweet promises into your ear. Might even sing a lullaby if you ask her to. I can guarantee that nothing will happen to you whilst she’s with you, watching you like a hawk and making sure that you aren’t uncomfortable.

👓Overall one of the better Yanderes to deal with insomnia. She’ll do everything to help you get some sleep and is ready to grant every wish you say as long as it might help you a bit.

Keinz Drocell

🪆Keinz is a puppet and doesn’t need sleep so when the s/o tells him they suffer from insomnia his first reaction will be confusion. Sleep? What is that? Is that important? He doesn’t know if it’s dangerous if you don’t get this ‘sleep’, but he’s quick to inform himself about it and is shocked when he finds out that sleep is needed for humans and if they don’t get enough sleep they might die! He surely doesn’t want that.

🪆He is completely clueless about what exactly to do and just asks his darling bluntly about why they suffer from insomnia and how he should handle this. Let’s be honest, one of the main reasons why the s/o can’t sleep is probably because of him and they’re quick to tell him this. This irritates Keinz. It’s his fault? Why?

🪆He’ll most likely kidnap a doctor and forces him to help you. Threatening to kill someone if they don’t works miracles. But he himself wants to help you in some way too. If the doctor needs something he’ll get it. If you want something he’ll get it instantly. He’ll also have a serious talk with you, questioning about what exactly he did wrong to cause you such fear that you can’t sleep and as soon as you’ll tell him he’ll immediately takes action. He doesn’t show you his collection anymore and he tries to not do such spooky things with his body anymore. He’ll also make you many plushys with which you can cuddle. Don’t worry, he made them from nothing that was once alive. When he hears that cuddling helps he might even try to cuddle with you, but he doesn’t know how to do it so it will be a bit...awkward.

🪆He’s the reason why you suffer from it and he didn’t even knew it! Well, at least he tries to help in some way...

🤫It’s their fault and they know it. I already mentioned in their Hc’s that it’s their punishment and they know exactly how far they can go with their darling, how extreme they can get until they’ve reached their goal to make the darling suffer from insomnia. And they’ll act like they didn’t have anything to do with it...

🤫Even though they know why the s/o suffers from insomnia they’ll pretend like they don’t and ask the s/o with fake innocence and worry why they can’t sleep anymore and are quick to comfort their darling when they tell them about the horrible nightmares that they had in this room. They’ll use this as a chance to tighten the bond between their darling and them.

🤫Mentioned it already in the Hc’s, but once again, after this you won’t be able to even close your eyes for a second when they aren’t with you in the same bed anymore. They have a schedule about who gets to spend the next night with you and make sure to grant you every wish. You want some hot chocolate in the middle of the night? Give them a second, they’ll even add cream and marshmallows to it. Some night stories? Tell them which one you want to hear. And of course cuddling is a must. And the best part of it? They don’t even have to force you since you clinge onto them for dear life on your own. These are the rare times were you will hear them talking to you, murmuring compliments and comforts in your ears and pressing soft kisses to your face and body.

🤫They take brilliant care of you, buuuut...IT’S THEIR FAULT AND THEY EVEN KNOW IT!!! And do they stop? NO!! The worst part about this is that they’ll gain your trust and love quickly like this which is exactly what they want.

🤺Charles never really cared for anybody except himself and the queen in his life, but now there’s someone he cares for as much as for himself, his darling! He quickly noticed that something is wrong with them since he watches them always and will most likely discover what’s wrong without even needing to ask him. Insomnia? That’s new for him.

🤺At first he’ll most likely be annoyed. It’s important for him that everyone at least thinks that he treats his s/o great, but when they would notice the dark bags under their eyes, what would they think of him? They would think that he doesn’t treat them good enough! Na-ah, we can’t have that happen. He also sees it as a chance to prove his darling that he really is the only one who can love and treat them right.

🤺This guy has money and influence and since he doesn’t know how to handle insomnia he’ll hire for sure the best doctors in the country to help. He’ll also inform himself about what he can do to help you as well since he wants to see to you like the perfect fiancé he thinks he is. He won’t make you tea or hot chocolate, why would he? He has servants that can do that for him. If you have any wishes that might help you with your condition he makes sure to sent a servant to get it as quick as possible because he won’t leave your side unless he really must. He heard that spending time and cuddling with the ones you love helps. And in his delusional mindset you love him so no chance that he’ll leave you alone. Even if you ask him to it will go in the one ear and go out the other.

🤺Oh dear. He won’t leave you alone at all and will stay the whole night with you in bed whilst cuddling you even if you told him not to! He’ll also tell you stories about his past, wanting to impress you with them, but in reality you want him to just shut up! Sorry, he won’t. You might even be able to sleep since he’ll really exhausts you with his behavior. At least one good thing...

Am I remembering correctly that Lin Xie, Yan Que, and Xiao Xuan were sworn brothers (like how NMJ, LXC and JGY are sworn brothers in CQL - sorry, that's my only other point of reference, and equally horrible for all involved, huh)? I'm very curious to know more about like... the tropes? And general understanding of sworn brotherhood in Chinese dramas. How do those relationships come about? How do they interact with filial piety? How very badly did the Emperor fuck his up?

Oh! An excellent question--I’m going to lean on show canon to answer this, because it’s been a Hot Second since I read the book, and while there’s slightly more content about the Original Golden Trio in the book, I also simply cannot remember if they explicitly mentioned swearing an actual oath of brotherhood

in LYB-the-show, however, Yan-houye has these lines in episode 13:

我和他，还有林燮大哥，从小一起读书，一起习文练武，一起共平大梁危局。我们曾经发誓，共患难，同富贵，生死相随永不相负。

“He and I--as well as Lin Xie da-ge--since we were young, we studied together, practiced the civil arts and learned military skills together, pacified Da Liang’s state of crisis together. We once swore an oath--to share trials and tribulations, to share wealth and nobility, to follow each other in life and death, and never betray one other.”

It’s not explicitly a sworn brother oath, and it’s not-not a sworn brother oath. Brotherhood can and has been sworn over much less, that’s for sure.

I am, however, less inclined to read this as a sworn-brotherhood relationship because of the severe class differences at play, and yes, I mean the emperor. One does not easily swear brotherhood with a member of the imperial family directly in line for the throne; honestly, that would be kind of presumptuous to try and hold the son of Heaven to an oath like that. This does not in anyway lessen the relationship between the three, because it’s clearly one of deep loyalty, trust, and giving. More important than any brotherhood between the three is the loyalty assumed--both a loyalty to your childhood friends and your comrades-in-arms, but also the loyalty between subject and ruler.

god. the relationship between 君臣 jun chen ruler and subject, emperor and minister, prince and general, is such a powerful relationship, and one that is absolutely central to the show. to answer your question, the emperor fucked these relationships up very badly--he ends up killing his general and alienating his diplomat/strategist so much that Yan Que spends years plotting imperial regicide. We don’t really see it in the show because all of the action takes place domestically, but the emperor’s actions--executing or exiling able ministers who disagree with him, encouraging factionalism within his court--have severely weakened the integrity of Da Liang as a whole, to the point where the neighboring states eagerly seize on the opportunity to invade in episode 54. Da Liang’s stability and prosperousness is not guaranteed at all. The dangers and inefficiencies of a court consumed by internecine infighting isn’t something the show necessarily dwells on (we tend to spend all of our time in the sheer opulence of the capital and imperial court, and hardly with the common people that everyone professes to fight for), but it’s something that is keenly present.

A state needs to have capable people in positions of power, and it is the emperor’s job to choose those people. But by encouraging petty rivalries between his sons instead, the Liang Emperor has severely jeopardized the existence of his entire state, and the consequences come back with a vengeance.

if the emperor, Yan Que, and Lin Xie were a shadow archetype of the emperor-general-strategist relationship, then we see the righteous version in the Xiao Jingyan-Meng Zhi-Mei Changsu relationship. There’s no sworn brotherhood  present in this relationship either, but Mei Changsu calls Meng Zhi “Meng da-ge” anyway. You don’t have to be in an actual brotherly relationship, sworn or blood, to call someone “elder brother”--it’s a function of relative age, fondness, and relationship.

bringing the scope of this outwards, the concept of “brotherhood” is a very important one in imperial/dynastic China (and of course, in depictions of imperial/dynastic China in wuxia and historical fiction). Speaking extremely broadly and not at all accounting for the vast diversity of cultural attitudes across dynasties, society tended to keep gendered spheres of life rather separate. Men tended to fraternize more with other men, women tended to bond more with other women. Yeah, sure, romantic love is great, but do you have a group of ride-or-die bros? Yeah, sure, a prosperous marriage is nice, but what about your 闺蜜 guimi, a lady’s bosom friends? 

(note that these relationships don’t necessarily have to be codified via a swearing-in of brotherhood or sisterhood, though they can be. it just depends how formal/dramatic everyone wants to be)

my impression is that sworn brotherhood tends to occur when two (or more) people are united in a single purpose--to overthrow a corrupt ruler, say, or to travel the countryside together and purge the land of bandits. I know a lot of Anglophone CQL fandom is shocked that anyone could watch all fifty episodes of that show and think that the relationship between Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji was platonic, but hey--plenty of male characters have sworn brotherhood (or assumed brotherhood!) to each other and roamed the jianghu together, fighting evil, drinking wine, being bros together. It’s the (jazz hands) homosociality of it all!
