In these tunnels, on my own, with the dark around every corner, every draft from a distant, high air vent becomes the hot, moist breath of the beast on the back of my neck; every whisper of my own clothes becomes the lurking footfall of oncoming death; every flickering shadow in the lamp light becomes the sudden movement of the fabled monster leaping around a corner, teeth seeking for my flesh. My nerves were all alive as though I were in freezing water, my muscles tensed tighter than a Scythian's bow. I had spent so many restless nights contemplating every eventuality. I am ready for anything... I thought.

And yet, when I hear the footfalls behind me and spin around to face him - there is no convenient side passage to turn down on the long straight I'm in - I am not prepared for the Minotaur to hold up a skein of yarn, smile, and say, "I'm so glad I caught up with you! This is good yarn, it's a pity for it to be ruined by dragging it around on these dusty floors. I try to sweep, you know, but the place is just so damned big."

I realize, with mounting horror, that the yarn he's holding out to me is the very thread that I have been carefully laying down to show me my path back to freedom. Then rage engulfs my fear, and I lunge at him.

"You monster! That was my way out!"

He falls back and then I am over him, sword raised in both hands - and then I realize that he's crying.

"Yyyou don't - don't have to b- b- be so mean about it!" the beast wails. "I was only trying to - trying to help!"

There's something so piteous about it that all the fire leaves me. The Minotaur is head, shoulders, and chest taller than I am, never mind the horns, and he's as thick at the narrowest part of his waist as some wrestlers are around their chest, and his arm is raised protectively across his face, and his eyes... They're a deep brown, soulful, docile, and swimming in tears. What can I do, but put away my sword and, rather abashed, help him stand again. Unable to meet his gaze, I mumble something about being taken by surprise.

"It's... It's okay," the beast sniffles. "I know that I look... That I look like this," he gestures vaguely at his head.

But now that the moment of fear is gone, I can't help but note that, beyond the initial strangeness of his appearance, there's a subtle beauty to him. Although lacking the athletic build of a champion Olympian, his thick muscles, softened by a healthy layer of body fat, give him a sturdy appearance that is well-proportioned to his head. He's the hairiest man I've ever met, but it's a silky sort of hair, thickly curly on his belly and chest, and it transitions smoothly into the fur of his head and face, so that rather than seeming a normal man in an ungainly costume, I am finding myself taking his unusual look in stride with ease, finding it no more difficult to accept than the strange clothes of a foreign merchant.

I wave my hand in what I hope is an elegant gesture of good grace, though I fear it may come off as dismissive. "I... You... I just was so used to being down here alone that I was startled to hear you behind me," I say.

"Yes... It can get a little lonely down here," he says, still sniffling a little. I instantly regret my comment. But he doesn't make any more of it, saying instead, "I can show you the way out, you know. The back door comes out on a path that will take you right down to the docks. I'm sure you can find a ship home."

"There's a back door?" I say, rather stunned.

"Oh yes. That's how Mother and Ariadne visit me. I don't think Dad approves, so they have to come in secret. Come on," and he sets off down the hall. Seeing no other good options for myself, I follow him.

"I'm Asterion, by the way," the Minotaur says as he leads me through the maze. "What's your name?"

"Um. Theseus," I say, waiting for the inevitable question.

"Like the prince?" Asterion gives me a look of surprise. "I thought you were older."

"Just named after him, actually. My parents were trying to be patriotic, I think, but it hasn't really done me any favors."

Asterion nods sympathetically.

"Um, so... You mentioned Ariadne. She gave me the ball of yarn." A terrible thought occurs to me. "This isn't a set up, is it? You're not just leading me somewhere to kill and eat me, are you?"

"Why does everybody think that?" Asterion wails.

"King Minos... He said that's what you do. He puts it out that human flesh is the only thing you can eat. Is - Is that not true?"

"Uh! Dad!" Asterion exclaims, sounding exasperated.

"King Minos is your father? But I thought..."

"No, yeah, I mean, he's not my real dad. That's... Well, you know," Aserion mumbles. "But he's Ariadne's dad, and he's married to my mom, so..."

"Oh. Yes. Of course." I cast around wildly for a change of topic. "So why didn't Ariadne tell me that you - that you're not -"

"That I'm not a flesh-eating monster?" Asterion finishes my sentence rather more bluntly than I had meant it. "Would you have believed her if she had?"

"I... I guess not," I admit, feeling ashamed.

"Yeah. You said that she gave you this yarn? I assumed it was something you brought with you."

"Yeah..." This last comment nags at me. After a moment of thought, I say, "So does she not give everyone the yarn, then?"

"Oh... I think this might be her idea of a joke, actually," Asterion says. "You see I... Mom recently started showing me how to weave. To pass the time. And it gets so drafty down here!"

I can't help but notice how his tail twitches as he says this. It's... dare I say it?... cute. A little unconscious behavior that gives away his mood.

"Your sister seems nice," I say, mostly to avoid an awkward silence.

"Yes. She really hates Dad, though. I hope she gets off this damn island eventually," Asterion says. "Though I will miss her company. She's the one who keeps me up to date about what's going on, you know. Mom isn't able to sneak down here as much."

"And you?" I ask. "Don't you want to leave?"

"Oh, no, I mean, I'm more of a homebody, really," he replies, though I don't think he means it. "And besides, where would I go? Looking like... Looking like this, and all?

And then, we turn a corner and a sudden puff of salty air hits me. I can see very clearly daylight shining around the outline of a door in the wall.

"Well... we're here," Asterion says. Almost shyly, he holds out the skein of yarn to me. He's wrapped it up neatly. "Do you want this back?"

"You keep it," I say. "I don't know the first thing about weaving, so I wouldn't have any good use to put it to."

"Thanks," he says, slipping it into a pouch on his belt. He pulls the heavy door open, and the daylight hits my dark-accustomed eyes like daggers. Asterion was clearly prepared for this, because he turned away and shielded his face with his free hand, rather than foolishly staring directly out at the light, as I did.

"Well... Good luck. I hope you can make it home to Athens without too much fuss," he says. Without waiting, he turns away, back the way we've just come. He's almost halfway to the next turn when I hurry to catch him.

"You know... I don't really have anywhere to be," I say. "I could... Keep you company a while longer. If you'd like. Maybe you can show me what you're weaving?"

His smile illuminates the dim hallway more than the sunlight spilling in through the open door does.

"I'd like that," he says. "I'd like it a lot."

Me several years later, re reading old reviews: wait, I think they were trying to tell me I had a spelling error in my description. Yeah there it is. I thought they were just sharing a cool fact.

It’s a beautiful and romantic idea to be like the autumn 🍂 and let go... It’s for many the most difficult process, to recognized that things change, people, circumstances, especially when it is not favorable. It requires something that will all think we have, honesty with oneself. Leave the stories and assume reality. I know it’s not for everyone, but there would not to be so much suffering, guilt and longing for another time, other people, and situations. Letting go is the most liberating and generating well-being thing. It is to accept and be with what IS. Do not misunderstand me, it is not easy, especially since it is already a habit to accumulate, especially emotions.     There were 12 Collectives in all, there were 2 branches that seeded off the Collectives. Cousins so to speak. Collectives were people who could travel through time and space, between the spaces between spaces. They could balance lives simultaneously in multiple realities and parallel universes and change time.  I’m Viktorya and I am not one of those assholes. But I did manage to blow up my office but I promise that it was not entirely my fault. It started about a week back. Everything started off as a normal Monday morning. I was in my warehouse working on my molecular diffusion device but my sponsor kept butting in on my work and compromised a lot of my progress. Murphy knocked on my door.

“Vik I need to assess the work on the compression cable for the defibrillator-enator!” Murphy slapped a thick packet of paperwork in her hand. “The numbers don’t match up to the original prototype rendering.”

    Murphy pulled back her thick curly hair from her eyes and sighed. Viktorya was in one of her odd moods again, she was too wrapped up in this project that she neglected to take care of herself at times. Murphy just needed to breech onto the other side of this door and she could do what she was hired for. But Viktorya just-

“Diffusion Murphy! Defibrillator is for heart related matters. We are beyond that!”

“Open the door!”

“I don’t have time for your negativity at this moment. You’ll ruin the vibe of science.”

“I have coffee.” Murphy sang.

    The door swung open and there before her stood a tall, unkempt woman. Her hair was in a wild bun and her eyes were magnified by brass multiple lens goggles. Her clothes covered with oil and dirt.

“On one condition.”

“I will not Vik.”

“Murphy this is my space, it’s a requirement for all visitors before entering the lair.”

“Why must you call this a lair.” Murphy sighed. “Mwa-ha-ha.” Murphy said sardonically.  

“Where is your enthusiasm Murphy!? We are making magic!” Viktorya snatched a coffee from Murphy and twirled away.

    Viktorya’s lair was chaos. There were papers tapped and nailed to the wall with numbers and diagrams with many scattered and crumpled on the floor. Cups and dishes that were well used and dispersed among the place. LED lights were hung along the diagrams that added a sort of charming sense but everything else was just a mess.

“Vik the compression cable. What’s going on with that?” Murphy pulled off her pea coat and tossed it over a chair in the corner.

“It is now a chamber.” Viktorya said plopping a straw into her coffee. She began sipping and typing away on her computer.

“Yes that’s the problem, the company had settled on a cable not a whole chamber that’s expensive.”

“It would not have worked without the chamber, all the calculations on the computer neglected to render in the force of other external components. It was not enough power.”

“What external components?”

“Gravity for one, temperature, the geomagnetic field-”

“All right, all right I get it.” Murphy interrupted. “You need to check with the company first.”

“Its fine Murphy, tell those suits that I got a sweet deal on him.”

“Him? Your calling the machine a him? Isn’t that a bit objective?”

“Yes. Yes, it is. But check it.”

    Viktorya launched herself into the furthest part of the warehouse urging Murphy to pick up the pace. The bug-eyed woman stopped in front of rectangular object about 12 foot in height covered in a white sheet. Vik removed her goggles and set them on her neck.

“This is the chamber?!” Murphy shook her paper work at the oddity that stood before her.

“No, this is.”

    Viktoria pulled the sheet away to reveal two showers that have been taken apart and reconstructed with wires and lights and odd gears. They had been fitted with a ceiling and a glass door.

“Vik, please tell me you didn’t.”

“Meet Jeff and Kyle.”

“Jeff and Kyle?”

“Yup they’re gay and proud.”

“They’re not real.”

“Yes they are. Shhh never mind her my lovelies.” Viktorya kissed the machines.

“How much?” Murphy sighed.

“Free so fret not my little buddy-pooh.”

“Oh my god, what am I gonna tell Nigel?” Murphy rubbed her neck.

“Well you could first tell him he’s an-“

“No! Not today Vik.” Murphy pointed her papers at Vik and gave a scornful look. “He is our boss Vik. He’s both our paychecks. Respect him.”

“Gross. Respect is so time consuming and counterintuitive. He doesn’t respect me and yet I gotta respect him? I think not.”

    Vik ran over to her laptop and began typing in a series of numbers and letters.

“You know you’ve actually made perfect timing Murphy. You are about to witness the first ever transportation device.”

“Really? You said that the last time.”

“Yeah this one is really going to knock your socks off. I recalculated everything with the new chamber. Check it. See this?”

    The inventor pulled a brown ball out of her pocket and tossed it to Murphy. Papers flew in the air as Murphy fumbled the ball around in her hands.

“It’s a potato.” Murphy put the potato on the table and began picking up the sheets of paper on the floor.

“Yes. This spud is going to go into this chamber and come out to that one to the right.”

“How does this work exactly? Keep it simple please.”

“I will basically destroy this one here and it will digitally copy it and render it again.”

“I would die if I walked into that machine?” Murphy stepped away.

“Oh yea defiantly. You would die but your clone would be over there. But the machine isn’t strong enough for people yet.”

“What the hell would Nigel even want this for?”

“I can think of like ten good reasons.” Viktorya stopped and looked upwards. “Scratch that I can think of one good reason. Four other reasons are bad and the rest are worse.”

“Worse? Like how bad?”

“The extinction of the human race, mammal and reptile kind.”

“Why do I do continue to do this to myself?” Murphy shook her head.

“Because you love me.”
