You place your luggage down onto the wooden floor of the rental in Mondstadt city, sighing under your breath. The week-long boat trip from Sumeru to the docks and then another few days worth of slime balloon flight had not been easy on your body, especially since you mostly bury yourself in research upon research instead of strengthening your body.
A sense of peace wells up as you take in the bustling atmosphere of the people and the music carried by the wind through the window as you sit down onto the bed. It was the right choice to go to Mondstadt for your new project! You do miss Wanderer much more than you would ever admit after all the traveling though.
Quickly clearing up your mind, you put away your things and tidy up the room a little so that it is more livable than before. As you hang up the last of your clothes, a piece of paper falls down to the ground. You pick it up and freeze at the realization that it is the note you wanted to leave for Wanderer about leaving. A few moments pass and you give up on trying to think. Whatever will happen is for the future you to worry about!
Meanwhile, your poor boyfriend just returns to your shared abode after having to help the Dendro Archon out in the desert. Wanderer was expecting to see you excitedly rushing to greet him, or at least hear you in the living doing random things but is met with an empty home. His non-existent heart stops beating for a split second. Where did you go!? So the only reasonable action Wanderer can take is to rush out and grab the nearest familiar looking scholar for interrogation.
While questioning his victim, his brain is filled with the worst possibilities he knows, what if you finally realized that he is unsuitable for you, or you got kidnapped or- The poor scholar can barely answer him before getting thrown onto the ground and feeling a gust of wind rushing by, followed by a trail of dust. Wanderer breathes a sigh of relief knowing you are safe and sound. He thanks the Dendro Archon that you are simply on a work trip to Mondstadt of all places.
The anemo vision on his waist glows as he pushes the limit on speed before he inevitably is forced to go on foot once again. The puppet complains under his breath. He did not realize the way to Mondstadt is this long but at least this would be faster than to travel on any other transportation method. He also simply cannot believe that you would leave for your research now of all times. The puppet was away for two, t-w-o weeks(!) and you dare to leave without even informing him beforehand! Admittedly, he was released from his duties much earlier than expected but you could have left a note! (Even if technically you did, the results still matter more in this case)
Wanderer is immediately stopped at the gate of the city. The guards both looked at each other when they saw him rushing over at the speed of light and anger (?) practically radiating off him and swiftly concluded that he is, in fact, a danger. He stops when they block his entry because he is a law-abiding citizen! The scholar stands there in annoyance, one of his feet tapping the ground impatiently as his eyes flit over the two soldiers trying to do their jobs. Even if he would love to just go right over their heads, he can already hear Nahida nagging at him the moment he steps foot in the vicinity of Sumeru.
He zones out slowly at the mind-bogglingly boring questioning and profiling despite its necessity. The puppet wonders if you are doing fieldwork or writing out your plans at the moment. Wanderer is already planning how he would punish you for your lack of communication and- He snaps out of his thoughts at the guards handing back his identification papers with a polite apology for stopping him. He simply nods and walks in. Paperwork is always so tedious!
Meanwhile, you walk around the library of the Knights of Favonius, in awe at the sheer collection of books available and the crisp cleanliness somehow maintained despite everything. The librarian is an oddball but that is just how scholars are sometimes. Not the oddest one you have had the pleasure of meeting, at least. You run your fingers over the leather book spines as you hum along with the music selection from the gramophone. One book, and then another, and another one… They begin to stack up higher than you had expected. You stare at the pile in mild contemplation. How are you supposed to bring all of this back?
Lisa, ever the sweetheart, taps your shoulder and promises to help you reserve the books until your next visit. With that out of the way, you carry a comfortable amount in your (not) noodle arms back to your humble abode.
Wanderer walks into the bustling city while looking for your silhouette in the crowds. The guards said that there has been no scholar leaving the city for the last few days so you should still be around the place. He regrets not having planned this out better so he would not have to be walking around like a headless fly right now. He stops for a moment at the water fountain and allows himself to take a breather. You would tease the living hell out of him if you ever find out that he was in such a rush to see you again. Despite the way Wanderer acts, the corners of his mouth rise subconsciously at the thought of your surprised expression when meeting him. Maybe you would even be so happy that you hug him tightly and shower him with affection…
Instead he gets attacked right in the face with a thick encyclopedia on Mondstadt’s oral legends and a frantic scream that threatens to blow out his eardrums. Truly makes him wonder if he stepped out of the house with the wrong foot or something like that… Wanderer still catches the books flying at him, despite the urge to watch the world burn, and looks at the perpetrator in anger until he realizes it is you who did that. You know what, he can forgive you as long as you promise not to leave him without notice again.
You tumble, full Inazuman rom com novel style, sending you and your books flying at the fountain. A blood curdling scream makes its way out of your throat, effectively stunning everyone in the plaza. Honestly, for a moment, you wish that a hole would open up on the ground beneath you and swallow you up. You push yourself up from the ground, your knees still aching from the impact. You slowly look up at your victim and you rub your eyes vigorously at the sight that greets you. Isn’t Wanderer supposed to be in Sumeru right now? Are you somehow hallucinating in the middle of the day??
Regardless if this is an illusion whatever twisted god up in Celestia may be subjecting you to, you stand up and rush into your beloved boyfriend’s arms for a hug, deftly avoiding the books and the possibility of falling right into the water. As awkwardly as he is, Wanderer returns your affection. He pats your back lightly while maintaining a delicate balance with the books in his hand and you. Feeling your warmth against him is more than enough to make the trip here worth it.
The touching moment is cut short when you push him away. The puppet pouts a little but allows you to do so either way. “So uhh, how did you get here? Are you free from your deadlines yet?” He freezes up. Oh no.

This home is an Airbnb short term rental, but it's so much fun, if I had $7.9M + $42mo. HOA to buy the 1993 estate in Clermont, FL, I would live in it full time. It has 12bds, 9ba on 54.38 acres. The price includes the business, so you get all the stuff with it.

This room with the full kitchen and huge screen TV has theater seating and look at the balconies with figures on them. The double doors say "Cinema," so I guess this is also the home theater, but it looks like a family room.
Tumblr media
Tropical rainforest dining room with a carved table and chairs.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Arcade games, a pool table, and a TV area.
Tumblr media
Plus another full kitchen with a table that looks like a baseball.
Tumblr media
The bedrooms have themes- here we have a football field.
Tumblr media
Ski chalet?

The baths are spacious, but basically white, nothing special.

Who wants the golf cart bed? And, simulated golf room.

Are you ready to rumble in the wrestling room?

And, it has a cool bath.

Black light bunk room has a beachy motif.

The description says 3 kitchens, but this is the 5th I've counted.

Picnic area. Guests have to share the house.

Outdoor games.
Tumblr media
There's a boat house.
Tumblr media
Looks like one of those swan pedal boats.
Tumblr media
The house is managed by an outside company, but the new owner can choose to do it himself. Also, the current owner has more ideas that the new owner can add to the property. I'm a little disappointed that every single room is sports-themed.

In Texas border town, locals say military forces, not migrants, are invading
EAGLE PASS, Texas—The border between Eagle Pass, Texas, and Piedras Negras in the Mexican state of Coahuila used to be open, like the one between Derby Line, Vermont and Stanstead, Quebec.  “We used to just go back and forth all the time,” recalls Amerika Garcia Grewal, who grew up in the small city by the Rio Grande. “The same way we drove downtown to get tacos, years ago, we might have driven into Piedras to get tacos and come back.” Now the border is fortified.  First, there’s the infamous wall, built over several administrations to keep out migrants.  In Eagle Pass, it’s an expanse of fencing with closely spaced vertical metal bars, stretching for miles near the Rio Grande.  But in recent years, the wall has been supplemented with lines of shipping containers and concertina wire along the riverbank.  Armed soldiers are stationed on top of the containers. Fan boats operated by several state and federal agencies speed up and down the river, perhaps looking for or perhaps trying to scare migrants who might wade across the river to ask for asylum in the land of the free.   Customs and Border Protection (CBP), the division of the Department of Homeland Security generally just called the Border Patrol, has responsibility under federal law for enforcing laws controlling travel into the United States.  But in 2021, the state of Texas launched Operation Lone Star, dramatically escalating its own involvement in border enforcement.  Under Lone Star, thousands of Texas National Guard members and state police have been stationed at the border.  Texas’ Republican governor, Greg Abbott, Lone Star’s initiator and chief publicist, has labeled the influx of migrants an “invasion.”
[...]
“If there’s an invasion, it’s from the military,” says Jessie Fuentes, a retired communications professor who runs a canoe and kayak rental business. “There’s more military in our community than there are migrants, thousands and thousands of military from 13 different states.” “How would you feel if all of a sudden, your community was locked up with soldiers and you couldn’t go into your favorite park? Because it has concertina wire around it or shipping containers or armed guards or you can’t access your own river and your green space?” asked Fuentes, a member of the Eagle Pass Border Coalition, a grassroots organization.  “So yeah, the only invasion we got here is from the military and the Texas governor.”
[...]
The local immigrant detention prison is owned by the GEO Group, which according to a February 20 Newsweek article “reported one of its most profitable years amid the growing demand for immigration detention facilities.”  GEO operates 11 facilities in Texas. The $11B doesn’t count the money being spent by other states to send troops to Texas.  Missouri has just approved $2.2 million for a deployment.  Louisiana is sending its third rotation of soldiers. There’s “a lot of money being spent,” said Steve Fischer, who I met while he was walking his dog near the gated and guarded entrance to Shelby Park.
[...]
Amerika Garcia Grewal, who like Fuentes is part of the Eagle Pass Border Coalition, believes high levels of migration are being stimulated by Republican rhetoric.  When conservatives attack President Biden for “open borders,” she said, their statements get picked up and circulated on social media by criminal groups that make money off transporting migrants to the border (and extorting them along the way, as well).  “They think they’re talking tough,” she said, but instead they are giving migrants hope that they can make it to the United States and be safer than they were at home. Along the route, migrants are frequently subject to rape, other assaults, kidnapping, and extortion as they make their way north through Mexico to the U.S. border.  But still they come, in the hopes of gaining asylum in the United States.  If they do make it to Eagle Pass, they might find a community where compassion outweighs fear.

Trees have also broken the windows in some homes and businesses around town while other homes have some roof damage. Clean up crews will be around town on the 10th to help clean and then work will be starting to do repairs around town.
Characters can have bruising or minor scrapes if out in the storm. All major injuries are listed below:
Stevie & Johnny Wagner were at the hospital with their twins, Zoe & Logan, to get stitches for their son due to an accident at hockey tryouts. During this time, the power went out and Logan disappeared before the backup generators turned on. When they came back, they started looking for him which lead Johnny to go out and try finding him. This led to Johnny getting into a car accident leaving him with scrapes and bruises. They were able to find Logan hiding in a closet, but the stress of it all made Stevie's high blood pressure increase and she had a small heart attack. She was admitted and put on some blood thinners. The strain of everything also led to her having a miscarriage. She'll be in the hospital for a few days to be watched.
Camila Quintana Lopez was at Heywood University where she keeping out of the wind store. While attempting to help secure one of the doors to the outside to prevent further damage from happening to a lab space, a strong gust of wind blew the door open and Cami was blown backwards where she fell onto a bunch of burettes with such force that several of them impaled her leg. Instead of pulling them out at the university, she was eventually brought to the hospital where it was found that pieces of them had broken off and she would require surgery by Gavin Gunter to remove them.
Marcel Vaughn was at Tequila Cowboy where he was spending the evening with many others. There was no shortage of alcohol involved in the evening and once everyone was cleared to leave, Marcel slipped on a puddle inside Tequila Cowboy where he fell backwards and hit his head on the bar top his way down. This led to Marcel being taken to the hospital where he would be placed in the same room as Ade Duskin.
Romeo Clark was at Tequila Cowboy during the windstorm. While he was there, in the midst of everyone panicking, he was trying to get away from a window that was shattering from the wind when he slipped and fell. While falling, he tried to brace himself, breaking his arm with the way he fell and cutting his cheek on a few pieces of glass.
Chloe Austin was trying to get to safety at Animal House Shelter when the winds picked up as it was the closest place to her at the moment where many people were headed. While she was trying to get there, shielding her face was not enough to keep her from damages. The strong gusts of winds made the smallest of items into projectiles. A plastic sign flew off one of the nearby store fronts and she was not able to dodge it in time, leaving her with a major bruise on her face that was far too obvious to cover up.
Maverick Bennett was taking shelter during the windstorm at Tequila Cowboy. The strong winds propelled many items that were lose, sending one flying through one of the windows at the local bar. Maverick was standing too close to the window and as it shattered, a large shard of glass was thrown into the side of his abdomen, thus requiring he would be transferred to the hospital when services were available.
Tyler Day was nearby Maple Hills Mall and when he was trying to get inside for shelter, several large gusts of wind dislodged a tree near the entrance of the mall. While trying to dodge it, he was caught under the weight of tree. With help from others, they were able to get Tyler inside the mall where he would have to sit with a broken leg and several cuts from the branches until he could be brought to the hospital.
Summer Cassidy while already at Maple Hills Mall when the winds picked up, the strong winds knocked several lines of power out. As someone enters the Candle Shop from the outside entrance of the mall, the gusts of wind knock over several candles that had been burning, starting a fire inside the store. This is where Summer sustains several burns on her arms and legs while trying to get out of the store and her daughter, Sadie, to safety. The burns on Summer's legs landed her in the hospital once services were restored were she would need skin grafts on portions of the burns.
Harlow Hanlon decided to brave the wind storm to head home, despite warnings against it. While on her way home, many gusts of winds came through at once and low branches were flung at her with enough force to knock her out. She was brought to the Fire Department by a good civilian where she would come to and later present with longer lasting effects such as memory loss, reoccurring headaches, dizziness and insomnia that will go away over a period of weeks.
Quentin Levitt was at Gas & Go, along with many others when the winds picked up. With the winds picking up in strength, Quentin was hit by debris being flung off the roof with intense speeds. This led him to being struck in the leg by the debris while on his way inside and it fractured his leg. He was attempting to shield Luke from the debris that was being flung around.
Oliver Hensley was at Maple Hills Mall where he took shelter during the wind storm. The winds were so strong, many windows and doors were being blown open, despite attempts to secure them with objects from the store. Oliver was helping others struggle to get the door shut when the wind ended up flinging it shut as quickly as it had opened it, trapping Oliver's arm between the door and the frame where it would break.
Ricky Thompson was on his way to meet his family at Maple Hills Mall when a deer ran into the road. He swerved to miss it, but ended up clipping it. He got out to check on the deer, but the force of the wind and the icy road made him slip and fall. He was out in the cold for a while before Matt Wheeler found him and brought him to South Pines for safety until emergency services could get to him. He ended up breaking his sacrum, suffered some scrapes and bruises from the fall, and had hypothermia.
Asher Spring was diverted to Heywood University when the winds picked up where he started looking for people that he sees at the shelter a lot. When he found one of the families he works with in one of the unsafe buildings, he was ushering the family out when he was caught in the collapse of some unsecured bookshelves that resulted in several broken bones and a collapsed lung.
Ade Duskin was driving home from work when he saw someone needing help on the side of the road. While helping this person, Ade was struck by the hood of the car coming loose and falling on top of his head. He was unconscious and brought to the hospital as quickly as he could be. After he was brought to the hospital, he was in an out of consciousness, in the same room as Marcel Vaughn for many hours until he would later fall into a coma despite all of his scans coming back clear. A few days later, Ade Duskin would pass away on January 12, 2024.

Back from my Scandi vacation!
Felt like I took it for granted leaving my brain back in SG and letting Ax do the planning and the navigating. I brought my spirits though! Spending my day off today looking back at the trip which was such a great use of my time. Really appreciating this extra day off after my vacation.
Some tips for Norway and Denmark travels first
1. It's cashless even in the small towns. Cash was more of a liability as it forced us to spend it all
2. Hotels cost as much as Airbnb for 2 pax so opt for hotels as there's guaranteed shampoo, soap, hair dryer, heating and laundry. Most of our airbnbs were missing soap or shampoo which we didn't bring any of, in order to travel lighter. The bnbs we stayed in were also commercialised houses so there's absolutely no feelings attached. Checking in and out would also be more convenient with hotels. We had to return one of our keys from a convenience store which wasn't open in the early morning, in time for our flight.
3. Groceries are marked down on Friday if they expire Monday. If you're in Norway, go to Kiwi or Coop for basic groceries as it seemed to be the cheapest. However, each shop will hv their own discounts (not standardised across the same chain). Eg. We went to a place with 40% discounts on Freia choc which was only available at a particular store.
4. Northern lights chase was the coldest we experienced. Basically, the guide said that if its frost on the floor, it's worse than snow as there's no insulation for your feet. Not the coldest real temperature but coldest we felt. Bring extra clothes and heatpack just in case. The bonfire didn't do anything for me because it's too cold. We went with GuideGunnar which updates its aurora sightings on a daily basis. These guys are crazy and would bring you as far as Sweden just to chase the lights so bring your passports along! They also offer a 50% off the next trip if you don't see it on the day.
5. There's no heat packs there so bring them from home.
6. In Copenhagen, we recommend the Copenhagen card. It's only 65USD for 24hrs and you get free transport, museum pass and boat rides. We only decided to get the card after our boat ride which cost about SGD25-30, which was already a quarter the cost of the card. In Copenhagen, checking of bus tickets was a regular thing.
7. Useful apps for riding public transport: Oslo uses Ruter, Tromsø uses Troms billet, Copenhagen uses Dot tickets. Ticket checking was not very often in Norway. We did not cycle as it felt too cold for more wind to hit our faces.
8. Skip Oslo if you dw to visit a city. We spent 3 nights there and it felt too long. We wanted to do our last minute shopping at Oslo but everything was expensive throughout the whole trip that we started to buy souvenirs earlier when we saw marked down prices. With one more day in Tromsø, we could've gone whale watching.
9. Take into account daylight savings from 29/10. You have 1 more extra hour to sleep but your days are much shorter. We slept a lot because of the cold, about 10hrs of sleep each day and it felt just right.
10. Personally I would have brought instant noodles as the food there isn't flavoured with the same umami as I'm used to. I would also bring a thermal flask there to enjoy my hikes even more, taking a comfortable and warm rest at the peak.
11. If driving, please remember to pay for parking. There's usually a machine to start your parking. Otherwise, the fine is 660NOK. Don't let the rental company settle it as it'll still be billed to you with an extra fee. We would also recommend full insurance since we aren't used to left hand driving and Norway is famous for its narrow roads (at least from Stavanger to Odda where we drove).
12. We used waze for driving and it seemed that speed cameras are only in tunnels but nobody was following the speed limit anyway.
That's about all of the suggestions Ax and I thought of!
Hope these suggestions come in useful for someone.

2023 Bahamas cruise, Part 20. April 22. Cat Island, not Cat Cay!
Tumblr media
Cat Island at the highest point of all the Bahamas, Mountain Alvernia 206 ft. above sea level. The mountain is worthy of being named after. On Monday, I got a ride back from the car rental by “Alverni”.
When we we’re approaching Cave Cay from the west, we heard a faint VHF call to/from “Bay Wind” a buddy boat from last year. I was able to find them on the AIS (Automatic Identification System). No answer on VHF when we called, so I emailed them where we were at and our plans.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
They emailed back and we said we were headed to Cat Island in the morning. After looking at the weather, they changed their plans from heading to George Town, Exuma. To meet us in Cat Island. During the evening a wind blew up from the South West. Above are photos from the exact anchorage a year ago when we last saw them.
Tumblr media
We weathered a huge lightning storm during the night. All the portable electronics go in the microwave, incase of a lighting strike. Later we heard friends of George and Lisa were hit by lighting that night in Nassau.
George and Lisa had moved north to Black Point in the afternoon when winds starting picking up. So we left Galliot Cay cut at daybreak with both an out going tide and a tailwind. Flat calm and we had a current helping us. Flat calm 50 mile run to New Bight, Cat Island. Winds were light and behind us as we motored at 5.3 knots. Raise the main sail. No increase in speed. Bang…bang…bang. Lower the mainsail.
Winds seem to pick up. Raise the mainsail. Bang….bang…bang. Tie the boom hard to a midship cleat to stop the banging. Still no increase in speed. Lower the mainsail. We do that 5 times.
Tumblr media
The ugly side of cruising. Throwing our cans in the ocean.
We hate seeing bottles thrown on the side of the road here in the Bahamas. But as humans we produce trash. What do we do with it?Cruising you are a little more tied to your trash and where it goes. On some islands we walk our bag of trash down a road to the dump. It will be burned at some point. Some islands we pay a couple of bucks for someone else to do the dirty work. But our trash still ends up on a small island to be dealt with. Some trash burns, but cans and bottle’s don’t.
We collect our cans into a canvas bag Nancy sewed up. While snorkeling we collect bottles in the anchorage and put them in the bag. One of the accepted methods to deal with cans and bottles is to dump them in the deepest part of the ocean where no one will see them.
Is that really the answer? Just because no one will see them? Above you will see the method that we have used. Taking paring shears, I cut an extra hole in the top. Then 2 in the bottom, 90 degrees from the ones on the top. As we sail over 5,000 ft. of water we throw them over to sink within 200 ft. of being thrown overboard.
A squall developed close aboard, while the mainsail was up. Small squall, and we were right at the end of it. Wait….wait…HARD TO PORT. Nose into the gust of wind. After 3 minutes turn and run towards Cat Island. That worked out well. It almost looked like I knew what I was doing.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Notice how skillfully I color coordinated my shirt with the ocean color of the day. Trolled a triple plastic skirt behind the boat. The rig was made for us by Neil from Wales. The other rig he made us, was a cedar plug. When we trolled it a month ago it was cut off by some toothy fish within 15 minutes.
This 30” Cow Dolphin hooked herself and never pulled out the drag. Not sure how long this fish was dragged behind the boat, until Nancy saw it back there. Seas were calm enough we got the Dolphin on the boat. Now what do we do? No place to work killing or cleaning the fish. By wrapping its head in a cloth they stop flopping around. Stick a knife in its brain, or at least somewhere close. Then proceed to filet it at ankle level and not drop the slippery fish or knife over the side.
Mission accomplished. Been 50 years since I caught a Dolphin. It was enough for 2 dinners for the two of us. Shortly after putting the same rig out we caught a smaller Dolphin. But we released it and stowed the fishing rig. George had caught a similar size Dolphin, plus fought something large for an hour before it popped the line. Guessing a large tuna or wahoo.
Tumblr media
The first morning at Cat Island took our trash to the old government dock, then across the street to a place for trash. George and Lisa met us for a day of walking around New Bight.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here Nancy is walking up the 12 stations of the cross trail, to the “Hermitage”. In 1906 after a hurricane damaged several churches in the Bahamas. Father Jerome was sent to design and help build churches here. After several years and multiple beautiful churches he retired to Cat Island. At his request he was awarded the highest point in the Bahamas, 206 ft. Mt. Alvernia. Two acres of land at the top of the mountain were sold by the descendants of slavery to the Catholic Church. Father Jerome built the Hermitage in 1936, it looks larger than what it is. Everything is 3/4 scale, so watch your head!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Hermitage.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here is Duke Moss at work. He owns “Dukes Conch shack”. Nancy and I ordered the “Tropical conch salad”. Which is a pineapple and mango conch salad. George and Lisa went with the traditional conch salad but spiced up. Duke takes your order, then walks across the street and out into the water. He has a pen full of live conch there. After retrieving what he needs, he walks them back and stands on the outside of the conch shack. Duke quickly cleaned the conch, making it look super easy. He confessed to us, that this was the first conch he ever cleaned. We called him on that statement. Actually it was the first conch he cleaned today. These guys are natural jokers. Duke was in the Royal Bahamas Defense Force for a few years. Then tried “Fishing” in Cat Island. “Fishing” means both conching and fin fishing. Then he worked on the mailboats. In between trips he would fish. After a while some old timers showed him how to up his game.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Bahamian rebar! These guys were building a food shack. Many had burned down a couple of years ago. The main wooden beams were placed in holes with cement footers.
Who needs a wheel barrow? The dry cement is poured on the road and water mixed in by shovel, then they carry it over to the forms by bucket. To reduce the amount of cement needed and give it some structure. They throw conch shells in the holes with the cement. Bahamian rebar!
Two degrees of separation on Cat Island. We had watched a YouTube video made by “Charlie Bahama” about Cat Island. He had interviewed an old guy who played Rake and Scrape on an accordion. While eating at Dukes. I spot the old guy across the street. So we go over and talked to “Pompey” Johnson. We get on the subject of schools and sports, when I remember a guy we met in Bimini a couple of months ago was from this island. I describe him to “Pompey”. He says, “you talking about Kirk”? Yeah, that was his name. “Pompey” points down the road to the guy mixing the concrete, and says, “thats Kirks dad”. So we go down and talk to him a bit.

A not-so-simple relocation, day 4/5/6
Last time, we had the adventures in trying to pay for things part one (and yes, there will be a part two!), how the mass transit of Bergen works, and walking uphill.
The next few days were planned on Day 3, basically. We talked things over with my friends about what made the most sense to do when based on weather and so on. The plan was that one day we'd rent a car to drive up to where @kriatyrr lives to pick up things along with some furniture from IKEA, but it didn't need to be a specific day. It happened to line up where Friday was the better day for the car rental and everything else revolved around that. So, without further adieu...
Day 4 - Time to be a tourist.
The first of these days was a nice tourism day. I badly wanted to go to the Akvariet i Bergen (Aquarium of Bergen), as I went a looooong time ago once and it is kind of one of the more impressive things to do while out and about.
Tumblr media
We saw some seals, sea lions, reptiles, amphibians, many many different fishies... and penguins. Including a BEBBEH PENGWING!
Tumblr media
After that, we walked back through a nice neighborhood to get back to the main downtown area.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Our next stop was the Fisketorget i Bergen (Bergen Fishmarket), a public market for fish directly next to where all of the tourists get out of their cruise ships. They have two shops there specializing in fish and fish accessories - one of which is this nice restaurant called Fish Me (site in Norwegian, but if you click Meny (menu) you can find a menu in English). This is literally the only time I've gone out to eat in the first week that I've been living in Bergen (although I have ordered delivery a few times) and I don't think I can ever financially recover from this it runs a bit on the pricey side. I had a salmon burger.
Tumblr media
Don't get me wrong, the food is good, but this is a "once every few years" type of place. The bill for the five of us ran north of 2000kr (close to 200 USD) for the five of us.
Final stop was going to Nøtteblanderen (link is Norwegian-only) - the nut mixer. Kriatyrr and I originally visited this place when I went on my trip to Stavanger, only to discover that it was freaking delicious and they had just opened up a location in Bergen. This was actually my SECOND trip of the week to the nut mixer, but the first with Kriatyrr and all of my friends in tow.
After collectively spending almost as much money as our dinner, a trip back home because we knew the real bad day would be next.
That night, we finished our bingo game of "spot the different types of boats going by the apartment" with the sighting of a freaking SUBMARINE.
Tumblr media
Day 5 - I did warn him about the driving.
I first woke up to the sounds of Zoan's feeder opening... and some cronching going on. He's finally starting to eat, hooray!
The morning started off fine - I decided to be lazy while my friend went out to the airport to rent a mid-sized SUV. You see, today was the day of two big tasks - driving out to my partner's house (a decent distance to the North of Bergen) to pick up some more things from their place and the furniture trip to IKEA. Four of us went, one stayed behind to pet kitties.
As usual, it is time for an aside. Norwegian roads are very different from American roads. I'm hearing a "no DUH" from the audience, but let me explain some more.
In general, Norwegian roads operate much slower than American ones. The standard highway speed limit is 80 km/h, which equates to about 50 mph. There are a couple of roads with higher speed limits, but we weren't on any of those. Sometimes those speed limits drop to 50, 40, or even 30 km/h (30/25/20 mph, effectively) depending on whether you're in a residential area, hazardous area, and so on.
Tumblr media
Tunnels are plentiful, especially on this part of Norway, as if you didn't notice there is a big ol' mountain range going right along the coast. The area is gorgeous - I'll be uploading many photos to Flickr later on - but they kind of don't mention one thing.
How narrow the lanes are.
You see, this area drops quickly down to one lane. Not one lane in each direction, one lane total. Going through tunnels that way even.
Tumblr media
My friend who was driving was already getting super nervous at this point. Mind you, I warned him well before the trip that this was super narrow and he can absolutely just say no to this part of the trip. He was also playing up his nerves quite a bit... well, until it got even narrower.
Tumblr media
This part of the road is literally narrower than the walking path that went up to a block away from my house in Madison. It would go around mountain corners this narrow as well, and if there was oncoming traffic? Well, one person needs to either pull over or throw their car in reverse to the most recent area wide enough to let another car through.
Google Maps claimed the trip would take 2h 13m. The Norwegian government also claims these roads have a speed limit of 70 km/h.
I think it took us a bit over three hours to get there without any stops.
After that was the return trip. Just as many white knuckles on the way back, only this time my friend who was driving was also pissing off the locals by driving 40 in a 70 km/h zone during "rush hour" (I think we saw a dozen or so cars total off of the highway). I still don't entirely fathom going that fast down a one lane road even if it is in the middle of nowhere.
IKEA was the next stop on the trip with our rental land yacht Toyota bZ4X. IKEA for the Bergen area is located in Åsane, effectively a northern suburb of Bergen. On the way there, I received the notification from my phone I had been waiting for - Zoan finally ate some food while I wasn't there. He was returning to normal, double hooray!
IKEA is, well, IKEA.
Tumblr media
We bought a few things along with two sit-stand desks; one for me, one for Kriatyrr. We then went home - Kriatyrr and the friend driving in the SUV, another friend and I taking the bus because we couldn't fit all four of us plus all of that stuff in the vehicle. I busted out my new board game and read the rules.
Day 6 - Lazy day board gaming and building a desk.
This was the last day my friends were in town. Originally, we had plans for going up Fløibanen - a funicular that went up to the top of Mount Fløyen, which has some nice hiking areas and a gorgeous view over the city of Bergen. Those plans were kind of dashed by the traditional weather of Bergen (have I mentioned that I live in a literal rainforest?) and the general feelings of exhaustion.
Instead, we played a board game.
I didn't mention this back on Day 3, but when we were out and about in downtown Bergen I stopped by a store called Outland. It is a chain of geek stuff stores - M:TG, board games, roleplaying supplies, manga, anime, figurines, a play space for such things, and so on. In fact, this store was one of my requirements in Bergen - I wanted to be able to reach the store in around half an hour so I can potentially have a social life. Anyway, when we visited I picked up a new board game called Dorf Romantik. It is based on the video game by the same name (which in turn is really similar to Carcassonne the board game).
Dorf Romantik is a cooperative tile-placing board game for 1-6 players with a campaign mode, basically. You try to make pretty landscapes; basically similar to Carcassonne but without the stupidly-competitive parts of the game. I tend to strongly prefer co-op games in my multiplayer and my board game collection is currently on a truck to Los Angeles before getting on a slow boat here, so I wanted to have something.
My friends (Kriatyrr opted out of playing) played several games of it this day. Verdict: it's good!
In between rounds, we worked on building my desk. It wouldn't be too hard to build if it weren't for the fact that it required several tools... and we have no tools here. Had, I should say, since we had to go out and buy some to assemble this beast. I'm typing from this desk right now, in fact.
Next up, Oslo still not having their shit together on Sundays and the utter disaster that my friends went to, plus dealing with Norwegian holidays.
