HP Fic Rec Fest: Day 8
Today's prompt from @hprecfest: A canon-divergent fic
Fic: The Disappearances of Draco Malfoy
Author: @batmansymbol (speechwriter on ao3)
Pairing: Draco/Hermione, others I won't spoil, this is a full ensemble cast fic
Rating: M
Why I rec this: This is THE Deathly Hallows rewrite for me. Beginning with the astronomy tower scene, we get to see what happens when Draco actually accepts Dumbledore's offer of clemency. What follows is a brilliant reimagining of the horcrux hunt and the rest of the canon events in DH. I was floored by the creativity of this author in how they wove in canon elements and crafted such a fabulous story of redemption in the midst of a horrifying war. There is a chapter at Malfoy Manor that I won't spoil but I will just say I was holding my breath the entire time. The character arcs in this are spot on (Ron in particular, my goodness.) I also like to rec this fic to those HP fic readers who are skeptical of dramione as a ship. If you want to dip your toe into it and are wondering how/why draco x hermione could ever work, this is the fic I would suggest.

“How stupid not to think of the diadem before, said a smooth, cool voice in her mind. Without it, she did foolish, forgetful things. Without the diadem, she was fallible and unexceptional, only human. With it, she was so much more.” — The Disappearances of Draco Malfoy by speechwriter (Ch. 8: The Fidelius Charm)

Power of Repetition in Public Speaking
After watching "Oscar-winning actor & writer Tom Hanks gives the Oxford Union an acting lesson" on YouTube I felt inspired to write this blog. The link below if interested.
youtube
Public speaking is an art that transcends mere words; it involves a deep understanding of human psychology, effective communication techniques, and the strategic use of rhetorical devices. Among these, repetition stands out as a powerful tool that can elevate a speech from ordinary to extraordinary. In this blog, we delve into the Repetition class in speaking, exploring how this technique can captivate audiences, enhance message retention, and leave a lasting impact.
The Basics of Repetition:
Repetition involves the intentional reuse of words, phrases, or ideas within a speech. When employed thoughtfully, it can create emphasis, reinforce key points, and establish a rhythm that resonates with the audience. There are various forms of repetition, each serving a unique purpose:
Anaphora: This involves repeating the same word or phrase at the beginning of successive clauses or sentences. For example, Martin Luther King Jr.'s iconic "I Have a Dream" speech masterfully uses anaphora with the repetition of "I have a dream."
Epistrophe: In contrast to anaphora, epistrophe repeats a word or phrase at the end of successive clauses or sentences. Winston Churchill's famous "We shall fight on the beaches" speech is a classic example of epistrophe in action.
Anadiplosis: This technique involves repeating the last word of one clause or sentence at the beginning of the next. This creates a seamless connection between ideas and builds momentum. Yoda's sage advice, "Fear is the path to the dark side. Fear leads to anger, anger leads to hate, hate leads to suffering," is an example of anadiplosis.
The Impact of Repetition:
Emphasis: Repetition serves as a spotlight, directing the audience's attention to specific words or ideas. By repeating a key point, a speaker can emphasize its importance, making it more likely to be remembered.
Rhythm and Flow: A well-crafted repetition adds a musical quality to a speech, creating a rhythmic flow that engages the audience. This cadence can make the message more memorable and enjoyable.
Connection: Repetition helps to establish connections between different parts of a speech. It ties ideas together, creating a cohesive narrative that is easier for the audience to follow.
Persuasion: Through repetition, a speaker can subtly persuade the audience to adopt a particular viewpoint or take action. The consistent reinforcement of a message can influence attitudes and beliefs.
Practical Tips for Using Repetition Effectively:
Choose Key Points: Identify the core messages you want to convey, and strategically repeat key words or phrases associated with these points.
Consider Your Audience: Tailor your repetition to resonate with your audience. Understanding their preferences, values, and expectations will help you use repetition more effectively.
Vary Your Approach: While repetition is a powerful tool, overusing it can diminish its impact. Vary your repetition techniques to keep the audience engaged and interested.
Practice Pacing: The timing and pacing of repetition are crucial. Practice delivering your speech with the right rhythm to maximize its impact.
In the world of public speaking, the Repetition class is a formidable ally. When wielded with skill and precision, repetition can transform a speech into a compelling, memorable experience for both the speaker and the audience. By understanding the various forms of repetition and practising its implementation, speakers can elevate their communication skills and leave a lasting impression on those who listen.

Okay, I didn't except some of you want to read this speech separately from the fic, so, uhm, here it is.
So here we are, Armin's speech!
p.s. the setting is 10 years after the Rumbling and 8 years into his Ambassador work.
“Ladies and gentlemen, I do not come here as a soldier, a Commander, a savior, or a hope of humanity. I am here not for the morals speeches and lies, not for the glory or the selfish desire, I am standing in front of you as a human with the same wishes, the same heart, and the same blood in my veins. I am not here to tell you about the past or how ten years ago our lives were changed forever, I am not here to teach you how to treat the wounds all of us carrying - visible or not. And we gather here today not as conquerors or victors, not victims or fighters, we are here as survivors and seekers of a better world.” Armin pauses for a heartbeat, gliding with his gaze over the crowd, another pull of air into his lungs to push the words. “Today, we are called the saviors of humanity, Ambassadors of Peace, but we know the truth. This title doesn’t belong only to us, but to the courage, faith, and support of each one of you who believed in us and stood by our side in the ruins of what once was called civilization. It’s for the agony and sweat of the human spirit, the bleeding hearts and horrors of war, it’s for the brave refusal to submerge in despair. All of you are true heroes and ambassadors of peace, the ones who could propose to the world the persistence of the common faith that after the darkest times, there is always light, not from the sun or stars, from torches or lamps, but in all of us. For the past eight years, we fought a different kind of battle, that was all new for us - for people who knew all their lives the smell of blood and powder better than the odor of home-baked bread or the first odor of flowers after the frosty air of the winter. Our arms become the words and understanding, the dialogue, as our great weapon for the lasting peace.”

As an English major turned speechwriter, I find myself returning to Shakespeare’s Henry V, because the play depends on the unique power speeches have to motivate and inspire, while locating that power in two distinct places: the words of the speaker and the minds of the audience.
Part of the play’s reliance on the power of speech is practical, rather than philosophical. While Broadway productions can run in the millions of dollars, the means and technology in Shakespeare’s time were also decidedly restricted. In fact, the play opens with the Chorus addressing the audience, asking them to do a lot of imaginative legwork:

I’m not joking when I say I genuinely think you’d be a downright terrifying politician. You’re a really good rhetorician /gen
as an anarchist i feel the concept of the government/state is a slowly dying giant but i appreciate your sentiment if i ever decide to take up dictatorship as a hobby

the funny thing about being involved in the academic/journalistic/political spheres in dublin is a) the extent to which everyone knows each other and b) you begin to realise you know people in really powerful positions and it’s full of moments of “ooohhh, so that’s why that happened/why the country is fucked”

I am desperate for a candidate for high office to subvert this.
Think of the children. Think of trans children who deserve to live as the gender they know they are. Think of children denied other essential medical care by parents whose minds have been poisoned against science. Think of children in poverty who rely on their schools to get decent food, or on public libraries for shelter. Think of children neglected because their parents are forced to work nights and weekends just to have enough money for a home. Think of children of color who have seen their parents die because some asshole assumed they were holding a gun.
I support family values: unconditional love, acceptance and support; good food and artistic expression; friendliness toward your neighbors, creating a safe space full of trusted people that can withstand any attack by you fuckers who think you know what family is.
I want to create a family-friendly world, for families that have one parent, or three, or more than one of the same gender, or more than two generations living under one roof, or who aren't even related by genes or marriage. Family means no one gets left behind or forgotten. Except for my opponent and men and women like him, who have built their careers and their fortunes on creating a world where everything I have just said is radical and subversive.
