Summary:

Draco Malfoy is a—self-described—reformed man, ten years after the war. He’d worked hard to muddle through his mistakes, learn from his past and reckon with his future. Now the only thing left on his list is to apologize to Hermione Granger, who has so far refused to hear a word of it. Luckily, his Ministry-mandated community service hours have finally brought him to her department, which makes this his best chance at reconciliation. And he's not going to blow it.

“Granger,” Draco looked up from the papers in his hands and was met with a stony look. “It’s clear you’d prefer I was not here.” He kept his tone even and conversational.

“We needed the help,” Hermione said as she side-stepped the implication.

“And I am here to help. I’ve requested to complete service hours in your department for—”

“Five years. I’m aware. I’ve denied it every time. This is not a department that I want your influence in. But we are desperate for help leading up to program season and you were my only option. That is why you’re here.”

Ouch. He felt the slice of her words, but drew in a breath through his nose with a singular nod to lighten their impact. "Then I will get to my paperwork.”

Draco studied her as she scanned the pages, sinking deeper against the chair. Winter was on its way out, so much so that once they settled in the library, Hermione had removed her sweater, sitting in the chair across from him in just that tank top that hugged her body in all of the right places and was not doing any favors for his current mental state.

A bit to unpack here!! We're dipping our little toe into angsty waters... I hope you enjoy. This chapter was such a challenge. There was so much I wanted to convey in just a dozen slides.

Chapter 34: The Strange Disappearance of Rita Skeeter

“What happened?” he finally asks.

She wets her lips. Her cheeks are burning, and she wants to ask if it looks bad.

“I was — practising spells, and one rebounded.” She forces an embarrassed smile. “Did it to myself. Stupid, right?”

There’s a long pause as she waits for him to react.

“You’re a terrible liar,” is all he says. His voice is soft, but there is something about him that feels angry but in a way she’s unfamiliar with.

He usually goes flat when first irritated, and then explodes when she manages to poke too hard. This is calmer, but far more dangerous than that.

“Who did this to you?”

Excerpt from Chapter 48: A Work of Art

The creak of the door derailed her thoughts as she gasped and sat up in the bed. A tall shadow was just visible in the doorway before the door shut again and a whispered, “Muffliato,” broke the silence.

"Luminare," Hermione whispered, barely finding her voice as she pointed her wand towards the nearest lamp, a ball of light shooting into it and radiating from an orb under the lamp shade. 

Across the room, Draco was now clearly visible in the still dim lighting as he threw a set of black robes over the back of a chair. She blinked, trying to determine if it was real; if he was really here. Her heart was beating out of her ribcage and her breath had caught somewhere in the cavity of her chest that had been suffocating her for the last two weeks. And then reality came crashing down and she threw the covers off, Crookshanks meowing and jumping from the bed to sit pin-straight in the corner of the room. Hermione climbed out of bed and stomped up to Draco, hot tears in the corner of her eyes and fury on her features.

"Hermione—" he tried to say, but she had reached him now and her fists were balled and beating against his chest as barely discernible cries of how could you’s and you absolute idiot’s and I am so angry’s poured from her lips. His hands caught her wrists as he held one to his chest and the other firmly out of hitting distance. “Hermione,” he said again. “Please. Please don’t be angry. I’m back. I’m here. I’m sorry.”

"You’re alive," she dragged in a sharp breath. “I didn’t even know if you were alive.”

"Blaise was supposed to—"

"Blaise said you were okay ten days ago. I’ve had no idea—every day—I’ve been so—damn—worried. Terrified. Why?" Words had become so difficult as tears ran down her face and all of the emotions she’d felt for two weeks burst out of her.

"Hermione, I’m sorry—"

“You left,” the words spilled out with every angry, scorned and accusatory syllable and she finally pulled her arms back from his grip.

“I had to go. For you.”

“Truce?” she asked, holding her pinky out. 

“What am I supposed to do with that?” Draco asked, looking at her hand like it was a new, never-seen-before magical creature.

“Wrap your pinky around mine. It’s called a pinky promise.”

“And what are we pinky promising for?” 

“To no longer judge one another. To no longer assume things about one another. To be friends and to try to survive this term together.”

Draco nodded as he wrapped his pinky around hers. Hermione pulled their hands to her mouth and kissed her hand, Draco jerking back at the seemingly loving gesture. 

“What was that?” 

“You have to kiss it to lock in the promise,” Hermione laughed.

“Muggles are so strange,” he said, but pulled their hands to his mouth, pressing his lips to his hand. A jolt zinged down Hermione’s body at the action, thrilled at the fact that he was indulging her in a silly muggle tradition. The fact that he did made her think that maybe – just maybe – this arrangement with him could work out after all. 

They dropped their hands and Hermione laid back on her bed, staring at the ceiling.

“A pinky promise is more binding than an Unbreakable Vow, I’ll have you know,” Hermione teased with a slight smile on her face. “You’re really stuck with me now.”

A soft laugh that Draco tried and failed to disguise as a scoff filled the space between him before he replied: “Consider me bound, Granger.”
