OHHH!! absolutely.
edit after writing: this got out of hand. i love them so so much.

“Corner!”
That’s all the warning David gets before a body rounds the corner and rams straight into his own. He sees it first, a curly mop of blonde hair, a high-pitched yell, a tray flying out of hands— all too suddenly, David is splayed on his back on the kitchen floor, and all too suddenly, his white shirt is soaked in something chunky and wet.
Racer immediately kneels down next to him, eyes wide as one of the big pans they use to cook up all of the fries. “David! Oh, shit! Man, are you okay?”
“I— Yeah, I’m fine. Get me up,” David says, but as soon as he sits up, there’s a distinct pain in the middle of his back. He winces, and that must be noticeable, because Racer instantly starts asking questions.
“Are you okay? Are you hurt?”
“I’m fine, just—“
“No, you’re hurt, aren’t you? Fuck, I am so sorry, I didn’t know you were right there, I’m sorry—“
With a sigh, David grabs onto Racer’s shoulder, slowly pushing himself up to a standing position despite the blossoming feeling of ow currently pulsating through his body. “Kid, you’re okay, okay? You’re fine,” David says through gritted teeth.
Everyone in the kitchen is looking at them by now. David slowly turns to give them all a glance, noticing that something is missing— and just at that moment, Jack walks into the kitchen, smelling like cigarette smoke masked by a high-end cologne.
Jack stops just before the mess on the floor, taking it in with wide eyes, and he quickly looks up and makes eye contact with David. “What the hell happened?”
David sees the nervous look on Racer’s face, so he concedes and says, “It’s my fault. I was leaving and ran into Racer, I fell down and dropped the food. I’ll clean it up.”
“Clean yourself up first,” Jack comments, gesturing to David’s shirt, smeared with all sorts of colors: red and green salsa, garlic aioli, ranch and ketchup— a menagerie of condiments for a menagerie of burgers. “You didn’t get hurt when you fell, did’ja?”
“No, I—“
“He fucked up his back,” Race says from the side, and David gives him a nudge with his elbow. “He’s movin’ slow and it looked like he hurt when he sat up.”
Jack takes the information in, and gestures to the dishwasher. “I’ll give you a ten if you clean this up,” he says, gesturing to the pocket his wallet resides in, and the dishwasher responds with a curt nod. Turning to his linecooks, Jack nods to them as well. “Keep doin’ what you’re doin’. Rush isn’t startin’ for another twenty minutes, I’ll be back in ten at the most. Got it?”
“On it,” Specs pipes up, not even looking away from the task at hand.
With that done, David watches as Jack reaches out, then sighs at the feeling of Jack’s hand on his shoulder. They walk slowly to the manager’s office- a larger room off to the side of the kitchen, with a couple of comfy chairs and a place for staff to eat their food.
“Don’t bother Charlie with this, please,” David says, head lolling just enough to look at Jack. “I’m fine, really.”
Jack clicks his tongue a few times, then pulls out his keyring and unlocks the door. “Charlie ain’t here,” He murmurs, pushing the door open and leading Davey inside, only to lock the door behind them. “He’s runnin’ up to the bank. Register’s almost outta change for customers.”
“Ohhh, okay, makes sense,” David nods, then takes in a deep breath. “So… can I go, if he’s not here? I have tables I need to check on.”
“They can wait. Your health is more important than a table,” Jack says like it’s the easiest thing to understand, and Davey wants to agree, but he never knows. A few good tips could be the difference between eating and not.
But he doesn’t bother arguing with Jack, because that’s never gotten him anywhere in the past.
Jack, after rummaging around in a locker for a moment, comes back to Davey with a clean- albeit wrinkled- white shirt. He sets it down on Charlie’s desk, and walks back to David, and suddenly, there’s a tenderness in his eyes that wasn’t there before— a carefully concealed care. Jack cups his cheek, and leans up to press a soft kiss to his forehead.
With that, Jack makes gentle work of untucking David’s shirt, working the buttons open until he can push the fabric off of his shoulders.
David gulps, and says, “I wish you were undressing me in a different circumstance right now.”
That quip gets a grin in response, Jack looking up at him with bright eyes. “Turn around, you dumbass.” And who is David not to comply? He turns, feeling Jack’s hands on his back. “Hm… It looks a little red,” He mumbles. “You sure you feel okay?”
David hesitates, then nods. “Yeah, I just… I guess I’m taking it slow today,” he murmurs. “If it gets worse, I’ll call out tomorrow. Racer owes me a covered shift anyway, I’ll talk to him if I need to.”
“If you’re sure,” Jack says softly, kissing the back of David’s neck. He then gently turns David around in his arms, running a hand through his hair. “Make sure you let me know if you need to go home, okay? I got a lotta sway over Char.”
David just grins and leans down, pressing a gentle kiss to Jack’s lips. “I’d rather go home with you,” He says softly, then sighs, grabbing the shirt off of Charlie’s desk. “I need to go check on my tables. I’d love to stay in here and have you all over me, but…”
Jack rolls his eyes. “I wasn’t all over you. I was makin’ sure you weren’t hurt,” He defends, though his smile is more than telling.
With a shake of his head, Davey finishes buttoning his new shirt, tucking it into his belt. It’s a little loose on him- it’s likely Jack’s- but he rolls the sleeves up and smiles in Jack’s direction. “Thank you, ahuví,” David says, and gives Jack one last kiss on the lips before they both walk towards the door.
“Ready to hate each other again?” Jack asks, and David squeezes his hand three times. They both walk out, discarding the dirty shirt into one of the trashcans in the kitchen, and David walks back to the front of house with a new smile on his face.

Chapter One | Chapter Two | Chapter Three | Chapter Four
Sequel here!
Tumblr media
Jack grumbles when the world moves. His eyes are dry and heavy and even if he tried he doesn't think he'd be able to pry them open. He clutches at the wiggling mass underneath him in an attempt to get it to still and in response a hand lands on the small of his back. Suddenly he's wide awake, flinging himself against the hand and rolling away. He scrambles back, limbs uncoordinated and frantic, blinking the drowsy blur from his vision in hopes to catch a glimpse of what he's running from. It doesn't take long for the pure adrenaline to clear his vision and he's greeted with Davey's startled face, arm awkwardly raised in the air from where Jack had to have knocked it aside. The unadulterated shock on Davey's face yanks a laugh from Jack's chest and suddenly he's trying to stifle his chuckles as the panic subsides.
It takes a few extra seconds for Davey to catch up but when everything processes he shoots Jack an indignant glare that's thwarted by the smile curling his lips. "Shut up," he huffs, pushing himself to his feet with a low groan. Yeah, that's fair, Jack knows how uncomfortable it can be to lean up against the roof ledge like that. The half wall bites into your shoulders like you wouldn't believe. Dave stretches briefly, trying in vain to soothe all the aches that come from sitting poorly for too long. He steps over to where Jack's sprawled across the rooftop and offers him a hand.
Jack takes it without hesitation, his laughter dying out when Davey heaves him up with a little more effort than Jack's used to. "Sorry 'bout that," Jack grins, eyes shining while Dave fondly rolls his eyes. Jack makes a show of dusting himself off, brushing off some pebbles but unable to get out the layer of dirt that constantly clings to him and the other newsies. Without the thrum of fear Jack realizes that they were well into the evening now and the sky was starting to splatter with deep oranges and pale yellows. "Sorry if you was gettin' stiff, didn't mean to sleep that long."
"I'm glad you did," Dave quickly assures him as he straightens out his vest and readjusts his cap. "You looked exhausted, Jackie. You needed the rest." Even though the words are casual that familiar concern is sparking back in Davey's gaze. Contentment blooms warm and merry in Jack's chest knowing that Dave thinks he's worth worrying about even if it would've been nice if Dave didn't have to worry at all.
"Yeah, well," Jack looks at Davey and can only imagine the fondness and adoration painted across his own face. Up on the rooftop with the warm glow of the setting sun dappled around them through the tall buildings of New York Jack doesn't think he's ever been so in awe. Dave looks beautiful colored in this light and Jack hopes that how much he's come to love the other man is clear when he speaks. "I guess you just makes me feel safe."
Dave only gapes in response. Jack thinks he's quickly becoming addicted to making Davey speechless like this. Dave doesn't say anything even as his expression melts. Instead he tentatively reaches out with a new determination sparking to life along his sharp features. He moves slowly, making every step obvious and giving Jack all the time in the world to deny him, but it doesn't even cross Jack's mind to pull away. Dave's hand comes up to cup the back of Jack's neck and ever so gently tug him in. Davey tilts his head down and when Jack realizes where this is going he tilts his head up in response. Their lips meet in a soft, loving kiss that immediately soothes all of Jack's racing thoughts. It's sweet and kind and unlike any kiss Jack's ever had before. He's never had anything like Davey before. Jack's never had an opportunity for a relationship like this, only ever holding onto trysts and flings described more by passion and desperation than any kind of love. If this is what happened when Davey was at a loss for words Jack thinks he'd do anything for it to happen again.
Dave pulls away enough to press their foreheads together, eyes fluttering closed in his new-found serenity. Davey shows such care and appreciation in the most intricate gestures, Jack is amazed by just how plainly Dave can express himself even without the words he was renowned for. His actions spoke volumes even if he struggled uncharacteristically to string the sentences together for even just a few fleeting moments. Everything about Davey was so beautifully expressive Jack wanted to commit it all to memory and immortalize it on a stretch of canvas.
"It's startin' to get late," Jack hates to break the silence and fracture their perfect bubble of peace but he knows he can't hide away up here forever. "The boys aren't gonna stay away long, I'm gonna have'ta get this over with sooner rather than later."
Davey leans back and offers Jack his most supportive smile, "You should've told us from the start. It would have saved you a lot of trouble." The words are teasing but still sympathetic. Davey watched Jack break down enough this afternoon, held Jack while they both cried, and it's really put a damper on any of Dave's lingering resentments. It felt cheap, born out of pity more than anything, but Jack was still grateful for the reprieve. It felt good to have Dave in his corner.
Jack looks towards the ladder leading down to the fire escape. There's nothing forcing him to go down there and explain himself. While he knows the boys will come looking at some point they also respect him enough to give him time if he genuinely asks for it. The only thing pressuring him to get this done is him. Somehow that ladder still feels like the ticket to his execution. He's not ready for this conversation, hell, it wasn't a conversation he ever planned to have at all. One more thing on the growing list of reasons why he's upset with Katherine even if he could recognize that it was a little unfair of him to blame his own dishonesty on her. She'd still taken that choice from him.
He heaves a heavy sigh that makes his ribs twinge, his hand instinctively snapping up to try and ease the ache. What the hell was he even supposed to say? Dave and Race were different, of course they'd give him slack when he told them he was a filthy coward. Dave wasn't like the rest of them, he'd never been beaten down and known that he wouldn't survive unless he got up and trudged on, and Race knew Jack well enough that he's been there through most of Jack's lows. How was he supposed to look these boys in the eyes, these boys who look up to him and expect him to lead them, and tell them that he'd let himself be threatened and whipped into obedience. That was pathetic. They'd never look at him the same again.
A hand slips easily into his own and Jack looks over to see Dave stepping up beside him, "I'm right here." Davey promises, squeezing Jack's hand for emphasis.
Jack swallows thickly and nods curtly, turning back to the ladder and steeling himself for what's to come. "Okay."
Dave goes down the ladder first much to Jack's chagrin. He's even less happy about it when Dave insists that Jack's too injured to be trusted and that he'd like to at least try to catch Jack if he were to slip. A bit emasculating but the deadpan look Dave shoots him when he tries to protest quickly gets Jack to concede. It doesn't stop him from pouting as he carefully makes his way down to the fire escape, though.
"Alright, Kelly," Jack murmurs to himself, facing the window that would act as the first step towards his undeserved redemption. He can hear some chatter filtering through the glass and already dread has started to spark anew in his gut. Dave is blessedly quiet while Jack tries to psych himself up. "Just get it over with." He sniffs, clenching his jaw as he wiggles his fingers beneath the window pane and yanks it up. No turning back now. For what feels like the billionth time these past few days Jack doesn't allow himself the chance to back out and steps through the window with all the gracelessness of a man bruised to hell. Jack is painfully aware of the hush that falls over the room as he enters but when he straightens it's not disdain and resentment painting the faces of the newsies packed into the boarding room. He's shocked to see concern on most of their faces and immediately he fears how much Racetrack's shared with them.
"Hey Jack," Finch breaks the silence, bright eyes looking Jack over the same way Davey's had; as if he'd suddenly be able to see all the bruises just because he knew they were there.
"Hey boys," Jack huffs, projecting as much confidence into his voice as he can scrounge up despite feeling mere moments away from tumbling back out the window. He would not be a coward but damn was it tempting.
Jack looks around the room, eyes flitting from face and face and trying to gauge who's already here and who exactly they needed to round up. He wouldn't be having this conversation again. He's barely had this conversation twice if he can count the vague recounting he'd given Racetrack and he'd never wanted to talk about it to begin with. The boys allow him a few moments to try and get himself in order and he's shocked to find that the only faces missing are Tommy Boy, Sniper, and the littles. Jack can't ignore that they were preparing for him to come back down. They didn't want to wait any more for their long overdue explanation so while Davey was up top with him they'd set themselves up all comfortable down here and waited.
Jack finds Racer leaned up against the door frame, not quite blocking the only convenient way out but clearly ready to, and Jack tilts his head in silent question. Racer shakes his head minutely in response. It's a quick exchange that was nearly imperceptible if you weren't looking for it. "I didn't tell 'em nothin'. Just let 'em know that things ain't what they seemed. We all know that the Spyder was there but that's it." That was more than enough to turn the tides. As much as Jack loathed to admit it all of his boys knew well that the Spyder scared the shit out of Jack. They heard that Snyder was involved and now their whole perspective has shifted. Now, in their eyes, Jack wasn't a lowly scab anymore but rather a man coerced and terrified. Jack isn't sure he likes that idea any better. Jack hums, trying desperately to think of a way to keep the details to himself without sounding like a liar but he's coming up short. Again and again he's always coming up short.
A familiar hand lands on Jack's shoulder and Jack turns his head to see Davey once again. Dave doesn't say anything, he's making it known that this is Jack's battle to fight and he wouldn't take the reigns. He looks uncertain touching Jack like this in front of so many people but his presence is immediately soothing. Jack takes an infinitesimal step closer to Davey, leaning back until his shoulder was pressed into Dave's chest, and sucks in a deep breath in an effort to keep his head on straight. Some eyes widen at the subtle intimacy but there's no anger or disgust. Jack even spots a few small, supportive smiles on dirty faces.
"Alright," Jack waits until the apprehension in Dave's eyes ebbs away before he addresses the crowd, "What'd'ya wanna know?"
"Did you sell us out?" Someone asks, a voice from one of the bunks packed so full Jack struggled to even count how many bodies were huddled up on the flimsy mattress. The whole room shifts with unease, seeking answers but worried for what they might be.
Jack swallows, "Yeah, yeah, I did." He mutters, eyes drifting to the dirty floors. He couldn't look them in the eyes even though he swore he was going to. He can't bear to see their faces no matter how much he deserves to. The guilt would kill him. "I, uh, just didn't want to."
"Jack-" Davey sighs that damned sigh again and Jack can't take it right now. He's wound too tightly and being surrounded by his boys fills him back up to the brim with guilt. He betrayed them. It doesn't matter why.
"No!" Jack pushes away from Davey and whirls around to glare at him, knocking his hand away. Davey raises his hands in surrender but it does nothing to quell the self-loathing rearing it's ugly head. "It don't matter why I done it, it matters that I done it at all." He snarls, fists clenched tightly at his sides and shaking with the force of his anger. He whips back around to survey his boys watching him expectantly. They aren't shocked at his outburst, they've seen him angrier, and despite it all he's never raised a hand to any of them. They only peer at him curiously, imploringly, and he knows that he has to give them answers. "There ain't no excuse for what I did, nothing's gonna change what happened."
"But can't you explain it?" Albert breaks in somewhere to Jack's right. He's leaning up against one of the bunks, arms crossed defensively over his chest the same way they'd been when he'd stopped to talk to Jack on the street only a day ago. Albert who didn't give up on Jack even when it seemed like he'd ratted them out for nothing more than a wad a cash. Jack softens and looks away, gritting his teeth.
"We ain't looking for excuses," Specs tacks on quickly, obviously picking up on Jack's faltering obstinance.
"But we'd like an explanation," Racer jumps in like the bastard he is. It's no secret that Jack has an especially soft spot for Racetrack and Crutchie and they never fail to use that to their advantage. Racer got the bare minimum out of him earlier but there was no way he was satisfied with just a glimpse into what happened.
Jack sags, visibly defeated, and falls back against Davey with a soft grunt. He nearly laughs when Davey's arm immediately snaps up to curl almost protectively around his waist but he doesn't want to risk losing the comforting weight. "Yeah, alright, I guess I can live with that." He steels himself again, willing himself to meet their eyes.  "You all know how I is, I stormed into Pulitzer's place all proud of myself. He ain't have no problems puttin' me in my place." Honestly, despite how it replayed over and over in his head Jack struggled to remember all the details of his time in Pulitzer's office. His focus is locked on the shock and hurt of Katherine suddenly standing there. Not to mention the pure, raw terror that coursed through him when Snyder showed up and the Delanceys merrily held him in place. It all gets a little fuzzy after Snyder showed up, panic and adrenaline drowning out everything else. "We all know he's a powerful guy. He gots connections, I didn't stand a chance."
"Was he really there?" A small voice pipes up and while Jack can't spot him Jack knows Mike's voice by heart.
"Snyder?" Ike presses unnecessarily but no less meek. They know it has to be the question Jack wants to answer the least but the whole room knows that it's all it would take to explain everything. The whole damn lodging house knew that Jack Kelly was scared shitless of Warden Snyder and there wasn't a damn thing Jack could do to convince them otherwise. He couldn't hide the nightmares or the way he'd flee at the first sign of the Bulls. No matter how desperately he wished to put up a strong front they could see right through it.
Jack sniffs, rubs a hand harshly under his nose, and nods curtly. "Yeah." Because what else could he say? They've very purposefully kept the littles out of earshot and while Jack was grateful for that he wasn't gonna sit here and tell them how Snyder beat the shit out of him.
"So Kathy was tellin' the truth," Romeo's murmur ripples through the room, somehow breaking out through the rest of the bitter chatter filling the air. Jack doesn't know how to feel about knowing there had been distrust there. He knows that he told them who Katherine was and exposed her in turn after she threw him under the wagon but somehow he hadn't expected it to change anything. He figured they'd all glaze over the fact that Katherine had kept such a huge secret the same way that Katherine herself tried to. Something warm and hopeful blossoms in Jack's chest knowing that they were upset too, upset not only at Katherine's deception but upset for him— concerned for him. The sensation of home and belonging that Jack's always found in the lodging house is starting to flood back in and he's nearly knocked over by the sudden weight of it. If it weren't for Davey at his back he's sure he would've toppled. "How bad theys hurt you?" Romeo peaks out from one of the top bunks, eyes wide and sad.
"I'm fine," Jack responds swiftly.
"You can barely stand." Racer monotones.
"He also hasn't eaten anything since the rally until a few hours ago." Dave, it seems, was eager to break his silence just to rat Jack out. Jack tilts his head up to shoot Davey the most betrayed glare he can muster but Dave, the bastard, is entirely unaffected and only offers Jack a sympathetic smile in return.
"How dumb can you fuckin' be, Jack?" Race snaps, running a stressed hand through his fluffy hair, and Jack is very aware of how often they've had this exact same conversation with the roles reversed. He wonders if he's supposed to feel the shame that's usually painted across Racer's face when Jack asks that same question. He's just feels so grateful that Race is talking to him at all he can't find it in him to feel chastised.
God, Kelly, it's only been a few days. What's wrong with you? Jack thinks bitterly, shrugging, "Had other things on my mind." He defends half-heartedly, much to the outrage of his friends.
"You're a moron-"
"Ah, c'mon, that's bull-"
"We knew you was stupid but we didn't think you was that stupid!"
"Just because we's mad at you doesn't mean we don't still love you," Jack's head snaps in the direction of that last comment, searching the crowd for the speaker. It's not hard to spot Specs now standing beside the bunk he'd been sat on before. His face is open and kind and he's watching Jack so intently Jack's half-tempted to snatch his glasses away; maybe then he couldn't look at Jack like that.
Jack doesn't say anything. He doesn't know what to say without sounding like some whiny child. He turns his gaze back to the floor and makes a show of rolling his eyes, "Yeah, course I do." Davey's arm curls just a tad bit tighter around his waist and Jack's stomach drops at just how knowing the gesture feels. Comforting in the face of the bold-faced lie that just fell out of his mouth.
"Don't run yourself into the ground for us," Finch grimaces, visibly disgusted at the idea. It wasn't uncommon for Jack to overwork himself, especially not when it came to helping out the others, but it was unusual for him to starve himself when no one else was going hungry. This wasn't just forgetfulness, it was recompense and they could see it clear as day. It made Jack's skin itch uncomfortably knowing how easily they could all read him, peering past his facade without any difficulty.
"It's the least I can do," Jack gives up on his charade. They don't believe him anyway and there's no point in putting on a show that no one's going to pay attention to. "I could've ruined all of this just 'cause I was what? Scared?" He scoffs, rolling his good shoulder in hopes of finally dislodging the guilt sitting heavy on his back. He can't keep the resentment off his face, disgust at his own actions churning inside of him like the ugly beast it was. What had he been thinking? He hadn't been thinking at all, he knows, and that was the problem. He had been so blinded by everything that even after he was left in that cellar to rot he couldn't manage to dig up a single logical thought. Jack sniffles, cursing the traitorous tears building in his eyes that he thought he'd cried away already, glaring daggers down at the dusty floorboards like they were the thing that wronged him, "Hell, who's to say I didn't throw a wrench in the whole damn thing, huh? Rally went to shit and we ain't gonna win this thing without Spot fuckin' Conlon." And Spot had finally been willing to show up. They had finally gotten everyone together, all the boroughs standing as one in preparation to fight a war for their god damned rights. No way was Spot gonna spare Jack a glance for longer than it takes to soak him after all of this
"It's not over," Race insists and a loud cry of agreement shake the room. They're getting riled now but Jack can't tell if it's sincere or if they're doing it just for his sake. "Yous said it yourself, Jack, even if the Delanceys come out swingin' we ain't backin' down!" Other cheer of support, newsies bouncing from their bunks as the thrill of being acknowledged thrums through their veins. A call for justice and a room full of hopeful boys willing to answer.
Davey's arm moves away and Jack makes a soft, plaintive noise that he hopes to God no one else heard. Dave doesn't leave, though, he steps around Jack and stands in front of him, hand coming up to rest on his good shoulder, "Yeah, Jackie, Pulitzer and Hearst they think we're nothing, right?" Davey looks at Jack with such determination and adoration and Jack feels frozen in the face of his own words being turned back on him. "Are we nothing?" He presses.
The newsies around them shout, raising fists in the air as they scream "No!" and Jack can't help the soft laugh that bubbles up at their enthusiasm. Here Jack stands, beaten and disheartened, but rather than back down when their leader is unsteady they come together to build him back up.
"We ain't gonna stop striking, are we?" A young voice breaks through the ruckus and Jack turns to the now open door to see little Les standing there looking impossibly small. Dave doesn't even bother to correct Les' phrasing.
Jack shoots Davey a look. He hadn't known Les was even here. He'd assumed that Davey had left his little brother at home when Race had dragged him over to knock some sense into Jack. He's sure the boys have been damn good about watching the little guy but still the last time Jack saw Les he'd been unnaturally silent and apprehensive. Davey offers a nearly imperceptible shrug in response, tilting his head pointedly towards Les and silently urging Jack to answer. Jack sucks in a sharp breath and turns back to Les still standing lost in the doorway. He crouches down low, gritting his teeth against the way his legs burn, and tries to offer Les the most assuring smile he can, "Of course we ain't." Les absolutely beams and while the newsies once again roar with excitement Les bounds forward and crashes eagerly into Jack's chest.
Jack's arms instinctively snap up to wrap around the small body even as agony ripples through his chest and rips the air from his lungs. Davey's quick reflexes are the only thing that keep Jack from crumbling fully to the floor, hands on his back bracing him before he could tumble. "I knew you weren't bad." Les says into Jack's shoulder, completely oblivious while Jack gasps pitifully for breath. It's worth it just to hear those words. Jack tightens his grip, cradling the small boy to his chest and looking up at Davey in silent request for the other man to help him back to his feet. It's awkward and it smarts more than Jack would like to admit but Jack manages to keep Les in his arms while Dave hauls him back up.
"Alright, alright!" Jack yells, tilting his head away from Les' ear as he demands the rowdiness die down. "We may not be callin' it quits but what's our next move?" They needed to be smart. They couldn't count on the other boroughs willing to give them another chance and the stakes just got a lot higher with Snyder in Pulitzer's pocket.
Davey and Race share a look that Jack doesn't like one bit and Dave turns back to look at Jack apologetically, "Have you talked to Katherine?" Oh, great. "I know you're angry with her right now and no one expects you not to be but she wrote up an article. A good article, Jackie. It's a call to action not just for the newsies but for all the working kids in the city." "For the sake of all the kids in every sweatshop, factory and slaughterhouse in this town, I beg you. Throw down your papers and join the strike." Race quotes and Jack recognizes those words too. Those words were his, said imploringly to the boys who almost scabbed. The words that drew them back into the fight.
"What..?" Jack murmurs, looking between Dave and Race so unsure of what this meant.
"The thing is she can't print it." Race huffs, scowl firmly cemented in place, "There's that ban on all news 'bout the strike and not even Kathy can get around it."
For a minute Jack feels the hope being ripped right out from where it bloomed new and fragile in his chest. Of course it couldn't be that fucking easy. But, actually. Wait. Maybe it could be. A choked, terrified laugh tears itself from Jack's throat and he clutches Les desperately to his chest when the fear spikes cold and unforgiving deep inside of him, primal and raw. Concerned eyes bore into him but Jack can only look at Davey when he says, "I know 'bout a printin' press we can use."

a gravitational pull
Realizing a crush after years of knowing them could possibly be the most embarrassing someone could do. It’s probably made a lot worse if that crush just so happen to be a friend. Romeo didn’t want to read too much into it to avoid the heartbreak. But after being invited to watch one of Specs’ volleyball game, maybe he wasn’t imagining it…

I have cold and snow on the mind so have Jack/Specs first kiss.
“Can we please please please go inside? It’s cold.” Jack complained, squishing closer to Specs on the bench.
“Just give me one second.” Specs liked watching snow fall. He found it relaxing.
“Elliot, I swear-“
“Just enjoy it.”
Jack fell silent. He couldn’t enjoy watching the snow, but he sure as Hell could enjoy Specs being happy. Jack wished he could draw him in that exact moment, eyes on the sky and hands on his legs.
Jack kind of wanted to kiss him.
He couldn’t just do that, though, he had to see if it would go, first.
Jack slowly and carefully reached for Specs’ (?) hand and took it into his own, without looking over. Specs didn’t do or say anything about it.
“El?”
“Yeah, Jack?”
Jack swore he could hear his voice shake.
“Can I kiss you?”
Specs then turned to look at Jack.
“Yes.” He whispered, a small and imperceptible hitch in his breath.
Jack leaned closer, and closer, and closer until finally he closed the space.
He suddenly wasn’t so cold anymore.

I don’t know the etiquette for posting fics but yeah here’s this🫶
Specs and Stray being siblings is everything to me because the angst potential it creates is amazing.
The same situation as sprace, with Race waiting and hoping for Spot to show up and help the Manhattan boys but it’s so much worse.
Because Specs is up there desperately looking for his sister, for his family to help him and his brothers.
And she doesn’t come.

Newsies TopGun Au
Hi! I was sitting, and I randomly had a thought that Racetrack is 100% a Top Gun fan and then I started coming up with really good ideas for a Newsie Top Gun AU. I'm not very good at writing fanfics but this idea was WAY too good to pass up. So I decided I was just gonna put out all my ideas and see if anyone wanted to do the hard part for me. I'm an artist, so having these ideas are still super fun for fan art and such. But if you're a writer and you wanna write this AU I will most definitely read it.
Callsigns - Newsie names
Jack - Cowboy
Davey - Walking Mouth
Crutchie roll undecided (he technically couldn't fly, but he’ll fit somewhere)
Manhattan Flight partners
Jack (flying), Davey (spotter)
Race (flying), Albert (spotter)
Elmer (flying), Buttons (spotter)
Finch (spotter)
Romeo (flying), Specs (spotter)
Brooklyn Flight partners ( Ima be so honest I don't know enough about the Brooklyn Boys on who would fly together)
Spot (flying), Hotshot (spotter)
Insert Brooklyn Flight partners here -
Instructors
Kathrine flight instructor (callsign - Plumber??) - having a Charlie moment
The Dalancy Brothers - fly together instructors always trying to get the Newsie Pilots in trouble (Brooklyn pilot supporters)
Plot and ideas
Jack vs. Spot moment (Mav and Iceman core)
Manhattan newsies vs. Brooklyn newsies
Silly tension between Jack and Kathrine (and some bro tension with Davey. Bisexual pilot)
Tension between Race and Spot (I’m a Sprace shipper I’m sorry)
Possible tension between Kathrine and Sarah (for the Sarah Kathrine shippers)
Sarah coming to visit Davey having a Goose and his wife moment but it's him and his sister.
Tragic Davey death optional!!!
Jack losing something losing his ability to fly or want to fly (DOES NOT HAVE TO BE DAVEY DYING! ID BE TOO SAD READING IT)
If you come up with ideas for this btw please comment them because this has so much potential. Someone somewhere will make this fanfic it's too good to pass up.
@wheres-brooklyn - sorry for the tag i saw you reposing the other top gun post and wanted to tag for the sillies sorry if its annoying

Hi hello! Hope you're well!
What are your favourite ships? And what do you like about them? :)
I am well aside from University related stress yes, thank you <3
Hmmm so my first fave ship was obviously Sprace (not like I've written about 125.000 words in total of fanfic about them or anything) and I didn't even plan to, I just looked at the newsies tag on ao3 after watching the movie for the third time and was confused about them as a ship at first... until I read more 92sies fics. But I'm also very particular with them as I enjoy them most in 92sies or UKsies admittedly but that's personal preference.
I just enjoy their dynamic of 'King and Jester' but both have sides to them most others don't know about
Now my favourite ship is probably Bumlets/Skittery/Swifty and that was also a total accident, me and Mack just paired up ships for the Pirate fic I wrote and they almost were 'left over' at first but Mack knew they were shipped before and well now it has escalated to my thoughts being about them 24/7. I think it's a lot about their characters being very open for interpretation and Skittery really needing someone to just let his anxieties out to (poor boy's shaking and smoking so much in the movie) and I just love Bumlets and Swifty in general. I can't even tell what exactly I love so much about them, they just click in my head.
Now third place has to be Dutchy/Specs just because I love them both individually so much. Probably due to Blood Drips I just *know* Specs is often annoyed by humans and needs someone to tether him (and keep him from snapping) and Dutchy is just the calm haven he needs. What he's not that good at in writing he makes up with speaking 4-5 languages. Also they're kind of like Morticia and Gomez Addams to me it's just my vibe for them
Then I also love Snitey and Blush, made up Snoddy/Pie Eater/Jake and like to read Redfinch sometimes
And Javid is kind of a given but I don't really write them often admittedly, also just something I sometimes read

NEWSIES FANFIC RECOMMENDATIONS!
Ok. So. I've been needing to make this for a while, so I'll just put down my favorites in no particular order, it's SO hard to pick...
Summer Camp AUs :3
Mountain Ridge Camp for Boys by timetogoslumming
Javey & Sprace, T, 22/22
This is a really good summer camp AU of newsies! I love how it combines canon plot with a modern AU!
Summary: David was just looking for a summer job when he applied to work at Mountain Ridge Camp for Boys. He had no idea how much would change. For the first time in his life, David is part of a brotherhood, but not everyone is on the same side.
How I Spent My Summer Vacation by studentnumber24601 (Itsy Royal)
Javid & Specs/Dutchy (Sputchy?? Idk, but I <3 this ship) & Blink x OC, T, 40/40
The prank war in this is honestly the best + the reluctant ladies man Mush is LOL, it had me guessing the ships till the very end, especially with Blink.
Summary: Modern-day newsboys at summer camp. Will wacky hijinks ensue? Gee, ya think?
Make Off Like a Band(it) by thespiritscalling
Sprace, G, 14/14
OMG. It's the funniest summer camp au I've read that sheds light on band camp (I'm an orchestra kid so this was hilarious to me). I especially love the That's Amore remix near the end lmaoo
Summary: It's the summer after graduation. Race is ready to hit the road- metaphorically, of course- but before that happens, it's time for one last stint at the Camp To End All Camps: band camp. Armed with nothing more than a French horn, two best friends, and reckless abandon, Race decides it's going to be the best final year of camp anyone's ever had. It'll be full of excitement, laughter, music, and an absurd crush on the lead trumpet player. Wait. What?
Canon Era :3
Their Mistake Is They Got Old by PenzyRome
David & Katherine, but the side ships are Newsbians and Javey, T, One Shot
You're gonna need the tissues for this one. I literally sob every time I read it, it's literally one of the best fics I've ever read. It's poetically tragic and heartbreaking and beautiful and HOLY CRAP!
Summary: Katherine Plumber, 17, had been so sure that she could stay the same, that she could stop the world, that she'd stay young forever. The world kept moving, though, no matter how hard she tried to stop it, and it forced her to move with it.
When Manhattan Met Brooklyn by warrior_sif
No ships cause they're kids, T, 4/4 (but the second one isn't finished :( )
Wow. Just wow. This one is honestly sad and I love the brother relationship between Jack, Race, and Spot and how Jack feels abandoned, like Race chose Spot over him. READ IT.
Summary: The only Manhattan newsies that Spot Conlon deals with are Jack and Race. A look back at how they met, eight years before the strike, when neither Jack nor Spot were leaders and Race just wants to sell at the racetracks.
False Rumors and The Truth Behind Them by FrogmanFae
Sprace, M, One Shot
This one is...heavy. The Refuge is such a bad place :( I love it though, the writing is beautiful.
Summary: Rumor has it that Spot Conlon and Racetrack Higgins met when Race started selling in Brooklyn because of his love for gambling. That isn't as true as the other boys in their lodging houses tend to make it seem. Though, they don't necessarily mind the false rumors. They hide the much darker truth. The truth that still causes Race to make the walk from Manhattan to Brooklyn in the middle of the night sometimes, even several years later. Or...It's pretty easy to form connections with someone you're forced into sharing a bed with while you're both being tortured.
The King & The Cowboy by goldenbiebah
Sparah <3, Spot/Sarah/Jack love triangle, T, 11/? (not completed :sob: )
I love this one, it really touches on how Jack is kinda toxic and how Sarah can have someone wayyyy better *cough* Spot *cough*
Summary: Spot Conlon and Jack Kelly are the fearless leaders of all the newsies in Brooklyn and Manhattan. They have a perfect system and hundreds of boys who respect and look up to them. But what will happen when the two leaders let selfishness and pride break up their friendship? And what happens when Spot's dark past begins to catch up with him? And where does Sarah Jacobs fit into all of this? Find out in The King & The Cowboy. Fights will break out, romances will clash, and lives will be lost in an epic struggle to salvage both new and old relationships.
Modern AUs :3
We Are Newsies by VeronicaWeasley (this is my sole ff.net one but likeeee it's too good to be ignored)
There are so many ships that I can't remember but I do know Sprace is one, T, 80/80 (I know that's a lot but it is SO worth it holy frick)
Ok. So. This one is like SO good. It's my fav high school AU because it has a really genius way of incorporating the canon plot with the perfect amount of angst, fluff, and more! :D
Summary: The same old story, the same old song. A tale in which the newsies of Lower Manhattan go on strike, and David Jacobs gets roped into it. High School AU set in 1999. Told through the eyes of multiple characters.
Captivity by Hexmari
No ships :), M, One Shot
I LOVEEE this one it's so crazy and you're in for a wild ride when (it's so cute that you think I'm letting that be an if :) ) you read it.
Summary:
“Ma– you seriously can’t do this to us!” Jack argued, “I mean it's Halloween!”
Charlie was quick to back his older brother up, “Yeah, do you want us to become hermits? Because that's what keeping us captive here all night will do!”
Medda rolled her eyes, “You will not become hermits by staying in for one night. It won’t be too bad, you can break into our Halloween candy and put on some horror movies, and Ester will be here with David soon. No kids are going out tonight, it’s just a safety precaution. Especially because of recent events.”
~🎃~
When a kid in their town goes missing, paranoid parents decide to keep their kids home on Halloween. Even after their mom forbids them from going out Jack, Race, Charlie, and their friend David sneak out, coming up with a theory that their old neighbor is behind the boy's disappearance.
The Beast of Brooklyn by ArtemisRayne
Sprace + side Javey, M, 26/26
This one is soooo worth staying up late for, it's amazing in every way and my heart aches for Spottie boy. And Race. And Jack. And David. But mainly Spot :)
Summary:
Racetrack Higgins always thought it would be his own vices that got him into trouble one day; turns out it's his Ma who does it for him. When Ma Higgins crosses the local drug lord and leaves him high and dry with a target on his back, Race's saved by a mysterious stranger who gives him a safe place to hide—a short-tempered and anti-social stranger covered in horrifying scars, with a past as dark as the marks on his body. However, the longer Race spends in the Brooklyn house, the more he comes to discover about the boy beneath the scars: a boy who is just as trapped as Race and twice as damaged. Befriending the two men who live in as hired help, and chipping away at the mysterious "boss" and his walls, Race might even manage to find a place to call home.*Beauty & the Beast/Beastly AU fusion*
Forever With You by 손 현숙 (safarikalamari)
Sprace, T, 14/14
ajlskdfjalkjdkajl this one is so sweet. The concept of it is super interesting and I just LOVE ittttttt.
Summary: In 1899, Spot Conlon is the leader of the Brooklyn newsies, writing away his thoughts and hiding them inside his desk for safekeeping. Meanwhile, in 1999, Tony Higgins receives an antique desk for his birthday and finds an old letter stuffed in one of the slots, the name, Spot, his only lead in this mystery. What becomes of that summer is a series of time-traveling letters, falling in love, and the realization that Spot and Tony know each other better than the two ever could have imagined.
Pirate AUs :3
The Truth About The Stars by ArtemisRayne
Javey + side Sprace, T, 10/10 (long chapters but it's worth it!)
OMG. This one is amazingggggggggggggggggggggggg I love the fantasy/pirate twist on the best movie/musical on the planet Earth!
Summary: The rest of the world might not think Jack Kelly is destined for much, but Jack knows better. He just needs to get away from the city, to some place where he can be more than just another nameless orphan in the chaos of New York City. So when someone offers to pay his way to Santa Fe in exchange for crossing the Wall and retrieving a fallen star, he jumps at the chance. He just wasn't expecting the star to be so, well, human. Jack makes a deal with the fallen star named David to get them both home, but the magical kingdom of Stormhold has so much more in store for them both. People are tracking David, secrets from Jack's past leave him in danger as well, and injustice is rampant in the kingdom. Throw in a climate of political upheaval, a renegade noblewoman, and a crew of fugitive sky pirates, and soon all of Stormhold will know that change is coming.
A Pirate's Life Is Never Easy by ChaosFairytale <3
Sprace + side Blush & Bumlets x Swifty, M, 9/? (it's an ongoing one shot series that has frequent updates)
OML I LOVE U SO MUCH CHAOS YOU'RE MY FAVORITE FANFIC WRITER AND I LIVE FOR YOUR WRITING TYSM FOR EXISTING!!!!! Her writing is the best and this is such a good story! (read Toss A Coin To Your Pirate first)
Summary: A Pirate's story doesn't start easy and it won't end easy, but there are many fantastic stories to tell throughout it. A series of One-Shots set in the "Toss a coin to your Pirate" universe containing different POVs, Backstory of a lot of characters and shorter stories about the relationships of the characters over the years.
Toss A Coin To Your Pirate by ChaosFairytale <333
Sprace + side Javid and Blush, M, 2/2
YUSSS CHAOS AGAIN!!!! <3 a million kudos. She writes almost exclusively about 92sies and I'm so here for it! READ THIS!!!!!!
Summary: Racetrack hadn't expected to see his hook-up ever again and had certainly not expected him to be the feared pirate Spot Conlon, but he also didn't have time to worry about that right now since his captain, Jack, desperately needed his help. He'd wonder later how he could maybe seduce the pirate captain once more. Because you'd miss every shot you didn't take, right?
Drumroll please...my all time favorite fanfiction....
FIVE by stress
Sparah + Davey/OC/Jack love triangle <3, T, 11/11
I finished reading this last night and got literal chills. The plot twist is wild and I love it so much, but you might need the tissues again! Can't spoil, but you NEEEEEEEEEEEEED to read it >:( It is the absolute best piece of reading on the Earth and I can't get over this. It's just...wild.
<3
Summary: A lot can happen in five years. Don't believe me? Ask David. Ask Spot. Ask Jack, or Racetrack. You can even ask Oscar Delancey. They know. They're the five who've been waiting for this moment. Waiting for what? They'll never tell - but this story will.
Idk if I should be doing this....but I'm gonna plug my own work and also give a fanfic update!
What Feels Like a Thousand Years by yours truly, ArtemisLynn
Sprace + mentioned Jatherine, G (?), One Shot
I'm honestly so proud of this one, it's one of the best pieces of writing I have ever done...
Summary: War has always been a foreign concept to Racetrack Higgins.. Even when America goes to war in 1941, he never gives it much thought....until it hits a little too close to home and his secret boyfriend, Spot Conlon, is drafted into the U.S Army. Will he make it home safely, or will Racetrack's one and only love be lost overseas...forever?
I also have chapter 1 of Jack Kelly's Guide to Being a Parent out, though I don't know if I'm going to complete it....
Fics I'm working on: -I have a couple chapters of this one boarding school newsies modern AU I'm doing done but not posted
-A Sparah fanfic that currently is in the early stages
-A Sparah princess bride AU in the planning process
-I'm toying with the idea of a newsies Descendants AU....thoughts?
Damn this post became long. ANYWAYS. Bye and have a great (insert timezone)!!!
