Among Debbie Reynolds’s last words were:
I want to be with Carrie [Fischer, her daughter]; she doesn’t want to be alone.
Now, the saguaro (saw-wor-oh) cactus is only found, in the wild, in one state, Arizona, and even then, it’s only found in a specific valley (though, I would be loathe to say that thiis valley doesn’t contain the majority of the population): roughly between Saguaro National Park on the east and then up towards Flagstaff, and to the west around Brenda, AZ. Furthermore, the Saguaro Cactus is a designated species in AZ, and as such, removing the cactus (without specific authorization) can cause severe penalties.
Now, Carrie herself was born in Burbank, CA, but her mother was born in El Paso, TX (unfortunately... I mean NM is, like, right there). But, if you divide the distance (driving) between Burbank and El Paso, you get the Phoenix metro area. This area, I am confident, is the location of the photograph that Mark Hamill shared.
We do not deserve Mark Hamill

Help me - I accidentally built a world.
So, I was plotting out an interesting ABO variant story (SPN) - my very first exploration of ABO, and I decided I needed a patriarchal theocracy setting to fit in with the ABO story concept I had in mind. I was playing with creating a new AU from scratch, but then said:
“But SPN is supposed to be about the American midwest - I wanna keep it in the midwest. Hmmm, how could I end up with a patriarchal theocracy in the US midwest? Oh, and I’m a gonna need a more ‘typical’ US for my characters to ‘escape to’ as well.”
3 weeks and several discussions with friends and family later (including a sketchy map drawn in a restaurant), I found that I had created a complete alternate US (and Canadian) historical timeline (based on a different outcome of the US Civil War) - with Monsters. Oh and THREE countries (ok, technically 5) instead of just two.
Today I made myself WRITE IT DOWN. If you’d care to peruse a description of my recent madness, feel free to read below the cut. It is STUPIDLY detailed for the fanfic I have in mind - and at this point, contains no ABO references. That’s TOMORROW’s task.
[Or maybe a nicer MAP is tomorrow’s task - we’ll see.]
ALL apologies to actual historians and anyone from Canada. I am a European medievalist historian *at best*. While this is SORT of based on actual dates/events, I played really fast and loose with history...and I can DO that because this is FICTION and I am the AUTHOR (ne:god). Feel free to yell at me in the comments - or blog about it if you are really incensed intrigued.
At the start of the story (2000ish), the North American Continent is divided up into three sections:
The Northern Alliance [two countries - the northern US (the Union) and Canada],
The Confederate States (southern US states plus a few midwestern ones), and
The Republics of California (CA, NV, & HI) and Texas (TX, AZ & NM) [Technically 2 countries]
These are distinct governing entities (countries) with distinct socio-political cultures who actively control border crossings and trade between one another. It has been this way for roughly 100 years.
Continental History
Civil war ended in a very bloody ‘draw’ between the Union and confederacy, Lincoln having been assassinated just after the Proclamation of Emancipation in 1863 resulting in [unspecified military decisions] and increased horrible losses on BOTH sides. Lincoln’s VP (Hamlin) died of winter illness at Fort McClary just before the assassination, and the newly appointed VP was a coward [need a name], who, injured during Lincoln’s assassination, became quite fearful for his life (PTSD?). In addition, [misc horrible war stuff happened- supernatural flavor]. This caused the VP to requested peace talks by the fall of 1863 during which the North agreed to the secession in order to stop the war.
The war treaty divided up the western territories along 42nd parallel, splitting Nebraska in half, and abandoning Kansas to the CSA. The south keeps all of MO and TN, but gives up KY and WV.
CSA attempts to “keep” CA, Union insists it has always been free (this wealthy state is big bone of contention in the war treaty discussions) but eventually CA declares loudly that it is NOT CSA, and if the Union can’t keep them, they’ll survive on their own just fine, thank you (Republic of CA). The border between Oregon (Union) and CA is WIDE open/comfortable and after a bit, CA forms a close partnership with the Union. CA claims HI almost immediately.
In 1898, Texas pleads with CSA for support to Cuba and Caribbean against Spain and is refused. Always more strongly sympathetic to Hispanic cultures than the deep south, Texas closes its eastern border and declares secession. CSA, still poverty stricken and lacking in forward-thinking leadership, has been having trouble managing its southwestern territories (full of ick, dark skinned mexicans and runaway slaves) and allows TX to leave, in the process giving up both New Mexico and AZ to TX.
TX then forms an alliance with CA who has meanwhile, essentially annexed Nevada from the CSA. Utah’s Mormons then beg to join as well soon after, but the CSA staunchly keeps Colorado and Nebraska. (This is all sorted out by WWI.) As both CA and TX wish to remain essentially autonomous, they each become “republics” with regularly negotiated treaties. The Texas republic’s northern borders are only lightly patrolled, but all ‘darks’ tend to avoid the CSA states. The border between CA and the Union’s Oregon & Idaho is similar to modern day Canada and the US. Texas’s eastern border is *tightly* patrolled/guarded (but water entry by the gulf or land entry by Mexico is significantly easier.) Texas remains antagonistic towards the CSA.
The Union/AU also struggled to recover after war (lack of leadership, access to western resources - lack of cross-continental rail - and the lack of the opportunities from a beaten south) and moves to form closer alliance with Canada. The Union (Renamed the American Union after the war) fosters discontent with British “Dominion” status and encourages Canada to sever ties with Britain (Edward VII) in the 1900’s. Together they become the Northern Alliance of States and Provinces (NASP) often just called “The Alliance”. Borders between Provinces and States are completely open/equal).
Together they negotiate with Russia for Alaska (and increase access to fossil fuels) and Alaska becomes (and remains) an “Alliance territory.” The Alliance/Union has almost no ties to the Republic of Texas except through the Republic of California. Relations are strictly business between them.
Monsters/the supernatural has always existed and different cultures have treated them differently (gods, vermin, partners, etc.) - often with different rules for different types of monsters. Witches and warlocks and those who ‘just study’ magic are also treated differently. Hunters and the MOL have always existed to study/control the supernatural and are generally paid/supported by the community (equivalent to police, military, bounty hunters or pest control, depending.)
The Alliance (American Union & Canada) “Unionists” vs “Canadians”, “The Union” (or AU) vs “The Provinces”
Essentially like 1990’s Northern US - culturally, politically, socially, etc. More folks speak French. About the same number speak Spanish. By 2005, cell phones are still pretty simple and for the wealthy. Personal computers and the GUI internet are beginning to take off.
The AU government seat was moved to NYC and then Albany after the war. This puts it only 5-6 hours from Ottawa (Canadian capital).
The AU maintains positive relationships with CSA border states (VA, TN, MO, KS, NB), but chilly relations with the CSA government as a whole. They are very cautions about sharing technology with the CSA and are, in part, the cause of their slow entry into modern technological society.
Monsters are classified as pests, pets, wild animals, domestic animals or humanoid in the Alliance and laws differ between classification. Hunters are prohibited from dealing with humanoid monsters (that’s a job for the police) and only deal with the other classes. Almost all ghosts are considered pests or pets for legal purposes.
The CSA (Confederates, Statesmen)
“White, male, god-fearing” leadership passes laws that treat non-whites (darks - including native americans and hispanics) as inferior humans although outright slavery technically ends due to limited #s remaining.
All women remain 2nd class citizens (although some functional matriarchs exist, they are rare and have ‘beard’ husbands). Women rarely work outside the home, have no vote and birth control is illegal.
A strong “clan” culture is developed - focusing power in extended families (at all social levels) and to be clanless eventually becomes barely one step up from being ‘dark.’
The CSA struggles after the war, slaves escape in droves and recovery is very slow. CSA draws heavily on Texas and western areas for resources, while western settlement slows significantly, leaving its western territories very disorganized into 1900. Technology development is slow, by 2000 the CSA is developmentally stuck in the 50’s/60’s - struggling to computerize systems. Thus it is easier to become someone else/hide who you are in the south, but as clanless, you will never fit in.
Florida uses an influx of hispanics/Cubans and caribbeans as a resource - indentured servants and blackmarket slaves to CSA southern farms. This prompts these refugees to aim for much more accepting TX (see TX secession above).
Nebraska & Colorado territories are redrawn immediately after the war and Kansas is expanded north to the 42nd parallel (now bordering the Union at the Dakotas) - sort of as a “sop” to Kansas. Kansas tends to be way less conservative/racially biased than the more southern states (and antagonistic to the CSA government) and routinely ignores CSA border regulations for Provinces. An easy exit/entry into the CSA is through Kansas’s northern border.
Oklahoma remained Indian Territory - no man’s land (very dangerous for outsiders), even today. Good place to hide - if you can survive.
Monsters/the supernatural are worse than ‘darks’ - Hunters have the right to kill any/all on sight. Hunters are usually part of a clan, and are paid for their services by the community. Individuals or remote communities can hire clanless Hunters, but the pay is much less, and they are seen as untrustworthy or a necessary evil, generally. Witches and warlocks are treated as monsters (and thus avoid the CSA) - UNLESS you are in the Appalachians, where they are a quietly revered part of society.
The Republics of California and Texas (RCA and RTX) “The Twin Republics” or “The Twins” - “Republicans” [NEVER Californians or Texans unless you are specifically referring to folks from that specific area of the Republic] ‘northern’ or pacific republican vs gulf or texmex republican (never “southern republican).
The cost of living is VERY high in either Republic unless you wish to either ‘live off the land’ (technically illegally) or enter ‘public service’ (essentially, a lifetime of minimalist servitude to the government/public sector, unless you can come into wealth some other way.)
The joint RCA and RTX borders are completely open. They agree to abide by each other’s laws (marriage, legal contracts, etc.) and extradition. Trade between them is healthy and strong.
By 2000, the RCA passes a monster bill of rights requiring them to abide by human/living laws or face imprisonment/other penalties. Some monsters work in public service to work off their crimes. Monsters are NOT to be killed without due process (including ghosts). Hunters are strictly licensed and regulated, and both Berkeley and Stanford have renowned monster cultural study programs.
In general, the RCA has laws/rights similar to what CA has in 2017 re: racial, gender, sexualy diversity. Pot is legal. Witches and Warlocks are also strictly regulated - but it is essentially a service industry job like any other. Technologically, they are more advanced than RTX or the UA - by 2005, smartphones and tablets are all the rage.
(RCA) NV - “What happens in NV, stays in NV.” It is a VERY good place to hide/party/become someone else.
(RCA) UT - an odd mix of religious sects - both conservative and accepting. More conservative near Colorado/Nebraska, less so next to Nevada.
The RTX does NOT give access to due process to monsters, but prohibits public/unregulated killing. Hunters are required to bring monsters to quarantine/incarceration centers (where they are “rehabilitated, exported or humanely disposed of). Because of this, some border hunters “release” monsters in to the RCA instead. RTX does not care - less work for them.
In the RTX, Witches and Warlocks are expected to deal with supernatural threats, but may call in Hunters to ‘assist’ in dangerous cases. “The dead should stay dead” is the RTX opinion of the matter.
In general, the RTX has laws/rights similar to what CA had in the 1970’s re: racial, gender, & sexual diversity, except pot is legal (because they can export to the RCA). Technologically, they are similar to the Union.
Overall, rules (or adherence to them) in the RTX are more rigid the closer you are to the eastern TX border and less so in NM and AZ (the closer to CA).
OMG, I am a complete IDIOT. Help. Me.
If you have read this far - feel free to leave a comment with YOUR suggestion as to what this AU should be called. Currently I haven’t ONE clue. The damn story (or series - I haven’t decided) doesn’t even have a name yet...but it has a socio-political HISTORY dadgummit.

Austin Cromer: “I subscribed to know when Iowa is finally gonna legalize cannabis as I am a current cannabis activist.”
Join us at https://www.patreon.com/marijuanamoment / TOP THINGS TO KNOW The Internal Revenue Service released a new memo on marijuana industry tax issues, including making payments with large sums of cash. The move seems to be in response to a Treasury Department inspector general’s report from earlier this year that slammed the agency for not having cannabis-specific guidance. Virginia’s House of Delegates and Senate both approved bills to help people expunge prior marijuana convictions. This comes after both chambers also cleared legislation to stop police from conducting searches or seizing property based on the smell of cannabis alone. The Vermont House of Representatives advanced a bill providing for expungements of marijuana convictions and letting people grow and possess more cannabis without the threat of jail time than is currently allowed. New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham (D) argued that legalizing marijuana could help fund Medicaid amid a budget crunch the state is experiencing due to the coronavirus pandemic.
“Recreational cannabis is one of those areas where that’s $100 million. It doesn’t fix it, but it plugs one of those holes [and] potentially would be enough to do a whole lot in the Medicaid gaps.”
Nebraska medical cannabis activists announced they will pursue a 2022 ballot initiative with “no limitations” after the state Supreme Court ruled their measure this year violated single subject laws with its regulatory and licensing structure. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit overturned an intent to distribute conviction against a man busted by U.S. Park Police for having marijuana, scales and baggies—and it’s thanks to the legalization law D.C. voters approved. / FEDERAL The U.S. Department of Agriculture released several audio spots promoting its reopening of the public comment period on hemp regulations. Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith (R-MS) tweeted, “Here we go again. Dems block a #COVID19 relief bill with *billions* for school safety, unemployment benefits, liability protection & much more. Why? They want to cling to their demands for cannabis research, checks for illegal immigrants & tax cuts for blue state millionaires.” Rep. Doug Collins (R-GA) said he plans to vote against a marijuana legalization bill on the House floor this month. Rep. Norma Torres (D-CA) tweeted, “Our federal #Marijuana laws have achieved nothing for the American people besides generations of incarcerated black & brown kids. It’s time to admit that ugly truth and right this wrong. I support @RepJerryNadler’s #MOREAct” Rep. Paul Gosar (R-AZ) tweeted about Democratic vice presidential nominee Sen. Kamala Harris’s (D-CA) marijuana record as a prosecutor. The Senate bill to deschedule marijuana and fund programs to repair the harms of the drug war got one new cosponsor for a total of seven. The House bill to deschedule marijuana and fund programs to repair the harms of the drug war got nine new cosponsors for a total of 108. Georgia Democratic congressional candidate Barrington Martin II tweeted, “When Marijuana is legalized on the federal level, all of those prosecuted and incarcerated for marijuana offenses should be IMMEDIATELY released and paid out a percentage of the revenue accumulated by marijuana conglomerates. This is a non-negotiable.” / STATES Pennsylvania’s lieutenant governor tweeted, “The majority of Pennsylvanians in Democratic and Republican represented districts want adult-use cannabis legalized now! It is time for legislators to listen to their constituents. There is support in all 203 House Districts and all 50 Senate Districts.” Ohio regulators disputed reports that they are in active conversations with Michigan officials about a possible agreement for patients to buy medical cannabis in the other state and bring it home. Illinois lawmakers proposed a compromise to end a dispute about marijuana license application issues. New Oklahoma medical cannabis rules took effect. Oregon regulators approved permanent rules for marijuana curbside delivery. Maine regulators issued additional marijuana business licenses. An Alabama judge denied a motion to divert a disabled Iraq War veteran from prison to a community supervision program over a marijuana possession conviction. Massachusetts regulators discussed whether to allow marijuana delivery services to “white label” and rebrand products. The Virginia Marijuana Legalization Work Group’s Health Impacts Subgroup will meet on Monday. Michigan regulators published a FAQ about annual financial statements that must be filed by medical cannabis businesses. Tennessee regulators sent a reminder to hemp farmers about a deadline to report crop acreage to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. — Marijuana Moment is already tracking more than 1,500 cannabis bills in state legislatures and Congress this year. Rapid shutdown: what you need to know
Reading Time: 3 minutes
If you’ve just installed a solar panel system or are looking at a picture of one, you may notice a box with an on/off switch that says “rapid shutdown.” But what does rapid shutdown mean, and why is it important for a solar panel system? In this article, we’ll give an overview of rapid shutdown requirements, how they vary by state, and list some popular inverter options that are compliant with rapid shutdown requirements.
Find out what solar panels cost in your area in 2020
What is rapid shutdown?
Rapid shutdown is an electrical safety requirement set for solar panel systems by the National Electrical Code (NEC). Simply put, it provides a way to quickly de-energize a rooftop solar panel system.
The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) wrote rapid shutdown requirements into the NEC in an effort to keep first responders safe. Hopefully, your home never catches on fire and you don’t even have to worry about rapid shutdown functionality – but if it does, firefighters can use rapid shutdown solutions to de-energize your solar panel system just in case they need to go up on your roof. Surprisingly, simply turning off a solar inverter doesn’t always do this on its own: with some inverter setups, wires and circuits can remain energized even if the inverter is turned off, increasing the risk of shock for the firefighters working on top of your roof or in your attic. A disconnect switch that enables rapid shutdown allows firefighters to physically flip a switch to reduce the electrical voltage of your solar panel system to safe levels in less than a minute.
The rapid shutdown requirements most familiar to installers today were first introduced to the NEC in 2014; among other things, this code set the standard to quickly reduce the voltage of any conductors (i.e. the material in wires or cables that electricity flows through) that rest more than 10 feet away outside of the array or are at least 5 feet of length inside of a building. Newer regulation, NEC 2017, takes these standards a step further: the newer code decreased the shutdown boundary requirements to include any conductors located within 1 foot of your solar array, or more than 3 feet of length inside of your home.
Effectively, the changes in NEC 2017 stipulate that rapid shutdown needs to occur at the individual solar modules, rather than at the solar array as a whole.
Importantly, NEC is not federal law – individual states can choose to adopt and abide by the code, as can individual cities or municipalities. This means that the rapid shutdown requirements for your state can vary from your neighboring state (we’ll dive into that a bit later).
Do all inverters have rapid shutdown capabilities?
Some inverter systems are inherently compliant with module-level rapid shutdown (NEC 2017 and later) on their own, while others require additional components to enable rapid shutdown.
Microinverter and power optimizer systems–like Enphase and SolarEdge–are the most popular inverter options for residential solar panel systems in the U.S. Fortunately, both microinverters and power optimizers operate at the panel site and have built-in rapid shutdown capabilities.
If you install a string inverter on its own, you may also need to install module-level power electronics (MLPE) to comply with NEC 2017 or NEC 2020. Pairing power optimizers with a string inverter (as is the case with SolarEdge) should do the trick. However, power optimizers aren’t your only option for rapid shutdown compliance – as more states began adopting NEC 2017, many string inverter manufacturers or other solar companies built new MLPE technologies with rapid shutdown capabilities. In many cases, these MLPEs created specifically for rapid shutdown can be a more cost-effective option than installing power optimizers or microinverters.
SMA America, one of the most popular string inverter manufacturers, has its own rapid shutdown solution (a SunSpec-certified TS4-R-F) that can be installed on the back of panels. Similarly, Tigo manufactures power optimizer solutions, but they also offer inverter-agnostic MLPEs–fire safety modules–geared specifically towards rapid shutdown.
Does my state have rapid shutdown requirements?
Generally speaking, most states have some form of rapid shutdown requirement. However, the requirements will vary depending on which code is in effect.
NEC 2017 and later (i.e., NEC 2020) require rapid shutdown at the panel module level. As of July 2020, these codes are in effect in 35 states. On the other hand, three states do not have a statewide NEC in effect (Arizona, Missouri, and Mississippi), though it may exist in some cities and municipalities.
Here’s a summary of the National Electric Code adoption by state:
CodeRapid shutdown requirementStates NEC 2020ModuleCO, MA, SD, WY NEC 2017ModuleCA, OR, WA, ID, NV, UT, NM, TX, NE, MD, MN, IA, AR, TN, KY, MI, OH, WV, GA, SC, NC, NJ, NY, CT, RI, VT, NH, ME, HI, AK NEC 2014ArrayPA, MD, DE, VA, FL, AL, LA, OK, MT NEC 2008N/AKS, IL, IA N/AN/AAZ, MO, MS
You can find an up-to-date map of the NEC in effect by state on the National Fire Protection Association’s website.

Welcome to our Election Update for Tuesday, Oct. 23!
It feels like every time you hit “refresh,” Democrats’ prospects in the House tick up. The Classic version of our forecast currently gives the party a 6 in 7 chance (86 percent) to take control.1 In the Senate, things look less promising for Democrats: Republicans have a 4 in 5 chance (81 percent) of holding on. But remember, there remains plenty of uncertainty in our forecast, so you should brace for a variety of outcomes. In the Senate, our 80-percent confidence interval spans everything from Democrats picking up two seats to Republicans picking up three. And in the House, there’s an 80 percent chance that Democratic gains will be somewhere between 20 and 61 seats — that’s a big range!
What fuels this wide range of outcomes? A big part of it is lack of data. Even at this late stage in the election cycle, many states and districts — even potentially decisive ones — have seen little to no polling, which forces our model to lean on other factors like an area’s fundamentals, possibly missing sentiments stirring on the ground. Of course, we don’t need polls everywhere; many states and districts are safe for one party or the other. But if we just look at places that our model considers to be competitive, some get all the polling love, while several others are woefully under-surveyed.
Take the Senate, for example. As of Monday afternoon,2 we had collected 52 polls of the U.S. Senate race in Florida between incumbent Democratic Sen. Bill Nelson and Republican Gov. Rick Scott. But in North Dakota — whose Senate seat is just as competitive as Florida’s — we had only eight polls of the matchup between incumbent Democratic Sen. Heidi Heitkamp and Republican Rep. Kevin Cramer. If we really want to understand the scale of polling disparities between the two races (and other competitive races in the Senate), we can be even more sophisticated and compare them by looking at the poll weights used by our model. It works a little something like this: Based on its recency, sample size, quality of the pollster, etc., each poll used in our forecast is assigned a weight — a coefficient where 1.00 is average. If you sum up all the poll weights for a race, you get an overall number that tells you just how robust the polling is. Here are the poll weights for this year’s competitive3 Senate races.
Some Senate races are poll hogs
Likely, lean and toss-up Senate races by amount of polling according to FiveThirtyEight’s aggregate poll weights, as of Oct. 22

* Special election.
As you can see, we really don’t need this much data from Florida, where the aggregate poll weight is 13.13. And you can’t shake a stick on Twitter without hitting someone complaining about how overpolled Texas is, especially given that the campaign there is not particularly suspenseful (Republican Sen. Ted Cruz has a 4 in 5 chance of victory). Instead, pollsters should try polling North Dakota (an aggregate poll weight of 2.39) or Montana (4.06). Really, we’re in the most desperate need of polling in the special election in Mississippi, but that’s kind of a special case: It’s possible that no candidate will get a majority of the vote there on Nov. 6, which will send the election into overtime.4
Turning our attention to the House of Representatives, we’ve collected 432 polls covering 142 districts. That’s pretty good at first glance thanks to efforts like the New York Times Upshot and Siena College’s live polling project. But four of the closest districts — those that are “toss-ups” or “lean” toward one party — have seen no polling at all.

Those four districts are the Colorado 3rd, Indiana 9th, New York 2nd and Wisconsin 6th. The Indiana 9th will be one of the first districts to have its polls close on election night and could be a good bellwether. In our model’s estimation, the Colorado 3rd is a true coin flip between incumbent GOP Rep. Scott Tipton and Democrat Diane Mitsch Bush, a former state representative. Somebody poll these places!
The situation isn’t much better in the toss-up Michigan 7th, which hasn’t been polled since February. Nor in the Nevada 3rd, whose only poll was really more of a subsample of a statewide Nevada poll (it had just 178 respondents). Nevada is a particularly surprising omission, since even qualitative election forecasters agree that that seat is flippable! That’s at least six districts in desperate need of polling — and that’s just among the most competitive seats. Our forecast shows the House battleground as historically broad; dozens of districts that rate as “Likely” Democratic or Republican — races that could determine control of the House — also have little to no polling.
On the other end of the spectrum, pollsters can probably give surveys of the Virginia 2nd District and Alaska At-Large District a rest.5 And the Florida 15th District has an aggregate poll weight of 4.83, meaning we have more and better polling of Lakeland, Florida, than of the Montana U.S. Senate race.
Overall, it appears that pollsters may be behind the curve on which districts are truly competitive given Democrats’ increasingly strong position in the House. For example, some of the highest aggregate poll weights in the entire House are in districts where the outcome isn’t in very much doubt, like the Virginia 10th (4.51), where Democratic state Sen. Jennifer Wexton has an 8 in 9 chance of defeating incumbent Republican Rep. Barbara Comstock. In fact, “Likely Democratic” districts have the highest median poll weight of any competitive category.

Districts’ poll weights, assigned partly on each poll’s recency, sample size and quality of the pollster, were summed and the median number used for each category.
As you can see, the median aggregate poll weights gradually move from high to low as you go from more Democratic- to more Republican-favored districts. What that means is we’ve got better polling in districts where Democrats are favored than races that could go either way or Republican. Ideally, we’d see more of a bell curve with toss-up districts having the highest poll weights, but this hasn’t been so. Most striking, however, is the sharp decrease in median poll weights in borderline-competitive Republican districts. That’s the kind of data that would help us foresee a blue wave — and unfortunately, it’s currently our biggest blind spot.

Album Review: ‘Pop Evil’ by Pop Evil
With their fifth studio album, Pop Evil is looking to shake things up a bit. Hence why it is simply titled Pop Evil, as it provides a reintroduction of sorts to the band that emerged from Michigan and has gone on to become one of the leading figures in the current hard rock world. Pop Evil (out on February 16th via Entertainment One) is the culmination of those ten years since their debut studio album and all of their works during that time frame; this self-titled release marking the first thing this latest lineup of the band has crafted together. What resulted from that is something… perplexing. The album is a collection of some of the most all-encompassing works yet from Leigh Kakaty, Dave Grahs, Matt DiRito, Nick Fuelling and their latest addition, drummer Hayley Cramer. It’s certainly some of the grandest material they’ve created to date, drawing on inspiration from a vast array of influences. However -- and because of that -- Pop Evil also seems to get tangled up by its own ambitious nature. It opens with that lead single that was released a few months prior to the record’s release. Not only is “Waking Lions” one of the most astounding pieces yet from Pop Evil, it’s worthy of being one of the greatest rock anthems of all time. With each listen the track manages to become more exhilarating and meaningful. It’s the embodiment of rock ‘n’ roll. It’s edgy and dangerous; the riffs and licks from the guitar being electrifying. A song about realizing one’s full potential, it is bound to speak to every last soul that hears it; the chorus sure to burrow into your head in no time and have you singing along. A cut the likes of which most musicians could only ever dream of making, it’s empowering.
The quintet makes a dramatic switch in gears for the second song, “Colors Bleed”. It draws heavily from Rage Against the Machine and bands of that ilk, which makes it arguably the heaviest song that Pop Evil has done. It’s quite thrash-y, the rhythm section dominating the track, while the guitars ensure things get pushed to the extreme. It’s volatile in a way, some great military styled drum beats coming at just the right time, though it isn’t without some melodic moments as well. Nevertheless, “Colors Bleed” is still a vast departure from what fans have come to expect from Pop Evil; Kakaty embracing the rhythmic the flow of it, spiting out the words that give it a rap feel. Some are sure to enjoy those aspects of the song, and while they deserve props for venturing outside the box, it’s not a style that suits them all the well. People either love or hate rap rock tracks like this, specifically the repetitive nature of the lyrics, and in this case “Colors Bleed” comes off as being too repetitious. Political and social issues act as the main focal point for most of the tracks on Pop Evil. That previously mentioned song revolves around things such as police brutality, while also discussing a democracy and protecting the hallmarks and liberties that are enjoyed from living in such a society. A couple songs later and “Art of War” seems to touch on the military industrial complex, as well as how regardless of who holds the power in the public offices, war is just perpetuated by them. The track follows in the vein of “Colors Bleed” though deviates sharply, all for its benefit. It’s a blitz. The guitar work is blistering and thrilling, the solo that’s thrown in being an instant classic; the song pure, hard-hitting rock combined with the rap rock style of singing. In this case, alternating more freely between musical styles, they execute it quite well, managing to avoid the pitfalls that hinder “Colors Bleed”. On the other hand, “Ex Machina” (which comes in between those aforementioned songs as the third track on Pop Evil) delves into the world of technology. It views it through more of an apocalyptic lens. Think something out of the Terminator franchise, where machines have risen up. “Are we born to die this way? Are we shallow minded slaves?” Kakaty ponders at the chorus, belting out portions of it with an overwhelming amount of passion and intensity. There may be some sci-fi components to the story, but at its core it explores the dependency that humans have created with their phones, tablets and computers. How unhealthy it is. How some already are “shallow minded slaves” in a sense, having grown too reliant on the devices. The gritty and slightly grungy track provides an interesting perspective on it; and the instrumental breakdown it features is just phenomenal. Bringing the record to a close are some of the most beautiful songs found on it, the first of which is “Birds of Prey”. It’s abounding with hope, as well as an underlying factor that provides it with a hint of somberness. The band doesn’t sacrifice their rock nature to achieve that beauty either. That allows “Birds of Prey” to maintain an anthemic sound, making it every bit as striking as some of Pop Evil’s most revered hits. Hypnotic, serene and in-your-face, it traverses all of those tones, and boasts one of the most impassioned performances of any of the eleven songs that comprise the album. Thus, it creates what is arguably the most sensational track this self-titled release has to offer. That beauty persists for the closing number, the reflective and introspective “Rewind” concluding it in fine fashion. The stereotypical slower song that anyone would expect at the end of a record, “Rewind” utilizes a decent amount of programming, producing something with a subtle electronic feel; the backing vocals that rise to prominence towards the end personifying that beauty as they cultivate something that’s akin to a gospel sound. Potentially their most polished and best produced record yet, Pop Evil finds Kakaty, Grahs, DiRito, Fuelling and Cramer pushing their creativity to new heights. Kakaty expands upon his vocal abilities exponentially, sounding more beautiful or fierce than ever, whatever may be required for the tone of the song. Grahs and Fuelling’s work on the guitar is more striking than usual; while DiRito and Cramer work together to create a dynamic and forceful rhythm section. As individuals as well as a collective they are in exemplary form throughout the record. A powerhouse even. Now, in regards to why Pop Evil is perplexing… Standing alone, each of those songs are great, but when consuming them as part of the larger whole, the listening experience one gets from the start to finish of the album, it strikes one as being a bit too jarring. There are a multitude of musical styles and influences at play during this approximately 45-minute long release, the jumping around that occurs being drastic. There’s nothing to really tie it all together. Nothing to make it feel fluid, nor provide a sense of cohesion. Rather, it just plays out like eleven wide-ranging tracks that were thrown together. It’s not necessarily that it doesn’t even sound like Pop Evil. No matter how different some of these tracks are from the band’s past material, it all comes across as being in their wheelhouse. It simply just sounds as if it’s a hodgepodge of songs strung together. With this latest collection of songs Pop Evil certainly break some of the molds they have previously been cast in, proving themselves versatile enough to pull off the various sonic shifts, while keeping intact some of what fans have come to expect. But all together like this it strikes one as being too much. Too ambitious; giving tastes of a bevy of genres but never delivering heavily on any one in particular. There are a couple of exceptional rock anthems; a few other gems easy to find; and some unexpectedly great songs. There are also plenty more that you’re likely to enjoy in the moment but forget as soon as they finish playing. In the end, Pop Evil is just hit and miss. Some of the statements revolving around the current state of the world are thought provoking, while others seem to dabble in grey areas rather than taking a hardline stance. Some songs are instant masterpieces, while others fail to make much of an impression. It’s an album well worth checking out, though you may want to cherry-pick the songs you purchase from it. 2018 Missouri Legislative Session bills affecting bicycling, walking, and trails: Dogs, texting, Rock Island, Route 66 and more . . .
The 2018 Missouri General Assembly session is underway--and as usual, a large number of bills and legislative proposals affect bicycling, walking, and trails in Missouri. Here is the rundown on bills and issues we are tracking this year:
Transportation funding - several bills introduced, including legislation to implement the 21st Century Missouri Transportation System Task Force recommendations. None have moved towards hearings yet--it will be a hard lift in an election year. Gov. Greitens has proposed increased transportation funding in his budget, but it is unclear what the source of his funding would be.
Join us for Capitol Day on April 9th, 2018--your voice can make a real difference in these issues at the Missouri Capitol
Rep. Korman has introduced a large number of bills with various ideas for transportation funding; rumor has it he may introduce one related to bicycles in some way. Sen. Eigel has introduced SB 617, a bill that reduces state income, increases state fuel tax by six cents per gallon, and makes several other state tax adjustments. The bill had a hearing January 16th.
Distracted driving/texting while driving/hands-free electronic device - Fair Fare act, SB 749, HB 1298, HB 1640, potentially others. The Fair Fair Act passed its House Committee Hearing last week on a 10-0 vote.
Loose dogs, dogs attacking/injuring cyclists (new sponsor, Rep. Don Rone, HB 2254 has now been introduced, bill text is quite simple and a different approach from last year's bill)
Requiring reporting, record keeping for bicycle injuries, collisions ( HB 1393, sponsored by Rep. David Gregory of west St. Louis County)
Unlawful traffic interference (text) - We have a concern this could leak over to inadvertently become an anti bike/ped bill, based on the specific wording in the bill.
Rock Island Trail - Bills requiring Missouri State Parks to provide fencing, and to provide tax relief to landowners adjacent to the trail to be introduced again (Sen. Kehoe, SB 866 & SB 868). It is unclear why these bills are necessary, as landowners receive federal compensation that covers the cost of fencing (among other things). Additionally, Missouri State Parks has an existing policy for dealing with fencing along trails that works well for everyone, including adjoining landowners. Counties don't assess landowners for the value of the land used by the railroad or a railbanked trail. Altogether SB 866 and 868 seem to be additional belt and suspenders to cover situations that are already covered by belt and suspenders.
Prohibiting any new State Parks - Rep. Pietzman has again introduced a bill, HB 1330, prohibiting any new acquisition or donation of state parks lands until all deferred maintenance on existing state parks is up to date. This bill passed the House last year, but with an exception for donated land such as the Rock Island Trail. The introduced version for 2018 has no exceptions, so we'll be looking at that issue again if and when the bill moves forward.
Bill to create a Missouri Route 66 Centennial Commission - HB 2039 is sponsored by Rep. Lyndall Fraker of Marshfield and will probably be handled by Senator Cunningham in the Senate. It is particularly significant because we are working with MoDOT and many local/national partners to get Bicycle Route 66 adopted into the US Bicycle Route system this spring, in time for the BigBAM ride on Missouri Route 66 in June. And of course we are looking for funding to sign the route across the state. The bill had a hearing this week and our lobbyist, Jim Farrell, testified in support.
HCR 76 to add the Butterfield Overland Trail to the National Trails System. Rep. Warren Love of Warsaw is sponsor. This is significant because we are working with a number of communities and RPCs along the proposed US Bicycle Route 51 corridor to finalize that corridor through Missouri and add it to the U.S. Bicycle Route System. The corridor from Fayetteville AR through Springfield, Bolivar, and Warsaw follows the historic Butterfield Overland Trail to a remarkable extent--and further USBR routes follow the historic route through large portions of TX, NM, AZ, and CA, while USBR 50/Lewis & Clark Trail in Missouri completes the Butterfield connection to St. Louis). Also significant because of the local/rural support for an addition to the National Trails System--which is not always welcomed in certain areas of the state.
Bill to add Franklin County to the Bi-State Development Agency, allowing the county to become part of the St Louis regional transit system. HB 1809 (Nate Tate), SB 757 (Dave Schatz), newspaper article with background.
Move to 8 member MoDOT Commission with geographical representation - problem is over 1/2 state's population lives in just 2 MoDOT districts, so 'geographical representation' sounds fair but in reality creates a strong 'lean' on the Commission. Often proposed & hasn't gone anywhere yet.
We will be visiting our Missouri senators and representatives at our annual Capitol Day and Legislators Ride on Monday, April 9th, 2018. Please plan to join us then to talk with our state legislators about these issues and more!

Image by tkksummers The North American B-25 Mitchell was an American twin-engined medium bomber manufactured by North American Aviation. It was used by many Allied air forces, in every theater of World War II, as well as many other air forces after the war ended, and saw service across four decades. The B-25 was named in honor of General Billy Mitchell, a pioneer of U.S. military aviation. The B-25 is the only American military aircraft named after a specific person. By the end of its production, nearly 10,000 B-25s in numerous models had been built. These included a few limited variations, such as the US Navy’s and US Marine Corps’ PBJ-1 patrol bomber and the Army Air Forces’ F-10 photo reconnaissance aircraft.

Millions of aviation fans have seen this popular 64 year old Warbird perform. Built in Kansas City in 1944 -45 as a B-25J, Executive Sweet saw extensive Stateside service throughout the war as a crew trainer. In 1948,it was turned converted into a USAF VB-25J, a VIP transport until the end of her service. In December of 1954 it was upgraded and designated a VB-25N by Hayes Aircraft, Inc. After several more years in military service at the School of Aviation Medicine at Randolph Field, Texas, the Mitchell was sold as surplus ad became a crop sprayer. Acquired by Hollywood’s Filmways Studios in 1968, the B-25 became the lead "on camera" aircraft named Vestal Virgin in the film Catch-22. Placed for sale after completion of filming in 1970, it was purchased by Ed Schnepf (Thank you Ed!!) in 1972 to begin a two-year restorative program back to a wartime J model appearance.
Looking factory – new in its bare metal finish, Executive Sweet once again was armed with thirteen .50 caliber machine guns, a Norden bombsight and operable bomb bay, authentic insignia and interior detailing down to crash axes and crew intercom.
In 1982, Schnepf’s Challenge Publications donated the B-25 to the newly formed American Aeronautical Foundation Museum at Camarillo, California, who has been operating it ever since. Executive Sweet has appeared in a dozen major films and numerous TV shows and commercials. In April 1992, the plane participated in the Doolittle Raid 50th Anniversary reenactment staged at North Island NAS.
Executive Sweet set the pace that soon saw hundreds of other warbirds fully restored to their original wartime pristine condition. As it begins its 37th year of appearances, Executive Sweet enters the season with a great new look (see our new nose art), and multiple shows already scheduled. The pilots and air crew volunteers of the AAF Museum look forward to another season of keeping alive the aviation heritage that millions come to share each year.

Esri Vector Basemap Updates (June 2017)
This latest blog related to the Esri Vector Basemaps reports on a bunch of updates made to the vector tile set published on ArcGIS.com. These changes include dozens of new and updated data for contributed communities and other areas of the map along with improvements to style files for map display. Stay up-to-date on announced changes to the Vector Tile Basemaps through this summary of our blogs.
Recently updated data contributors from Nacogdoches, TX; Lake County, IL; and Hurricane, UT as seen in Vector web map styles: Streets (with Relief), Imagery Hybrid, and Terrain with Labels.
Improvements to Map Styles
We continue to make improvements to the Vector Basemap styles. Some present more of an impact than others, but in general, these changes will provide a better user experience when using the maps. One of the fixes improved two of our Street Map styles (Streets and Streets with Relief). It eliminated “floating” shields at mid-scales (i.e. road shields displaying without any underlying road linework unless you zoomed in another level).
More detail on our style specifications is available in the Esri Vector Basemaps Reference Document.
Recently updated data contributors from Mesa, AZ; Chester County, PA; and Kanton Solothurn, Switzerland as seen in Vector web map styles: Navigation, Streets (Night), and Topographic.
Impact of Style Changes
Because this round of updates makes changes to the map styles, there may be some impact in your use of the maps. These three scenarios will help define what, if any, impact the most recent changes will have.
Are you using one or more of the Esri Web Maps?
Are you using one or more of the Esri vector Tile Layers?
If you are using Tile Layers, did you make any style customization to the root.json file?
Web Maps If you are using any of the web maps from the Esri Vector Basemaps group, you won’t have to do anything differently to be able to use new vector basemap styles. The web maps include the latest tile layers with updated data, features and styles.
Tile Layers If you are using one of the vector Tile Layers in a map you created, your map will continue to work with that tile layer. The new features and style changes will display in your map.
Customized Tile Layers If you are using a tile layer copied from one of the Esri vector Tile Layers, whether or not you made any customization to the root.json, your maps will continue to work and will display the new data updates. The one difference is your copy or customized layer will not take advantage of the updated styles (such as the new coastline feature and others as listed above). We recommend you update any tile layer copies with the latest vector tile layers. Any user customization will need to be reapplied in the root.json style now associated with this style layer.

Contributed Data Additions
We’ve expanded our use of OpenStreetMap data to now include new large-scale content in China, North and South Korea, Laos, and a refresh of OSM data across parts of Africa. This example shows our current (top) and before Street map of Beijing, China. Since we create one single vector tile set used by all the map styles, this additional content is now available in our other vector map styles as well!
In addition to updated OSM data, the following community contributors provided new and updated data that was added to the vector basemaps since we last blogged about vector map updates:

First night reviews from Ft Lauderdale called it “…a full-throttle, devil-may-care performance that thrilled a sold-out BB&T Center” (Sun Sentinel) with Revolver magazine reporting how the band’s legendary mascot Eddie dominated the Maya-themed stage: “From a walking zombie towering over band members during the set, to being featured on a host of back-drops and huge blow-up figures – the quintessential symbol was omnipresent for the entire show” including Eddie having his heart literally ripped out of his chest and hurled into the crowd by singer Bruce Dickinson!

Steve Harris commented; “We are really looking forward to returning to North America for a full tour. We had always planned to go back there and to the UK as last year, due to the global nature of the tour and the period it took, we just didn’t have time to cover them properly and we do still like to get to fans in as many places as possible!
So this year we’re able to reach many more cities in America, including a return to places Maiden haven’t played for many, many years like Lincoln Nebraska, Minneapolis, Oklahoma City and Oakland California. We also welcome playing in Brooklyn for the first time.
We will, of course, be bringing the full production with us including all the Eddies and the Maya-themed stage sets. There’s been a great reaction from everyone to this tour’s theme, people really seem to love it. We’re still deciding on the final set-list and we’ll work that out once we get into rehearsals. Most of our North American fans haven’t seen the show yet so as we want to give them the same Book Of Souls live experience that we took around the world, it’s unlikely we’ll change much. And of course we know our fans appreciate us playing a lot of the older songs too, so we will continue to do that!”
Tickets start going on-sale Friday, January 27 – check www.ironmaiden.com for market specific info. As usual, there will be an exclusive pre-sale for IRON MAIDEN Fan Club members, details of which can also be found on www.ironmaiden.com along with information on how Fan Club members can participate in the draw to be “First To The Barrier.”
IRON MAIDEN are delighted to welcome Ghost http://ghost-official.com/ as their Special Guests for the North American leg of The Book Of Souls World Tour.
*There will also be some further bands added to the show at San Bernardino.
After great feedback to last year’s North American trial of the concept, Maiden fans will again be able to enjoy a TROOPER VIP Upgrade package that will allow them early access to the venue, a pile of TROOPER goodies and MAIDEN swag, TROOPER beers, food and a designated area to meet with other fans, plus the opportunity to win some great prizes. The upgrade packages are available at US$199 from www.troopervip.com. The concert ticket must be purchased separately.
For the 2017 shows Maiden will once again, in conjunction with the Promoters, be implementing a partial paperless ticketing system in as many venues as possible, which they have been successfully doing since 2010 and has worked well in lessening the ticketing scalping and drain of the prime tickets into the Secondary Ticketing sites.
The Book Of Souls is Maiden’s first ever double studio album and their most successful chart-wise to date, debuting at the No. 1 spot in over 40 countries around the world and No. 4 in the U.S.A.

Image by tkksummers The Day I was here they were just putting the finishing touches on this WWII B-25 Bomber. The restoration was finished and it was supposed to fly that day. Unfortunately I did not get to see it fly, but it should have flown by now =)
UPDATE It has flown, see plane history below.
The North American B-25 Mitchell was an American twin-engined medium bomber manufactured by North American Aviation.

What’s new in Esri Vector Basemaps (May 2017)
We kick off the month of May with a bunch of updates to the Esri Vector Basemaps. These changes include new features displaying in many of our map styles, improvements to existing map displays, and new content across dozens of community contributed areas of the map. Stay up-to-date on announced changes to the Vector Tile Basemaps through this summary of our blogs.
-
New Features
One of the biggest changes to many of the vector styles is the addition of a coastline at smaller scales of the map. This subtle change improves the cartographic appearance of the maps from their previous depictions. If you’re using one of the styles in which the coastline is now included, you also have the ability to customize the specs of this and all the other features in the map. This example shows Topographic and Streets web maps with the new coastline feature.
Another addition is spot elevations added to the Terrain with Labels style. By default, the elevations are in feet in the contiguous US and meters across the rest of the world. Through customization of the style, you can change the spot elevation units to display as either all meters or all feet around the globe.
Additional changes to the Terrain with Labels web map is the splitting into a separate base and reference layer. This allows for better map presentations when adding data to this style. For more details on the new Terrain with Labels web map and Terrain Base and Terrain Reference vector tile layers, see this blog.
-
Improvements to Map Styles
We continue to make improvements to the Vector Basemap styles. Some present more of an impact than others (see coastline addition above), but even seemingly minor changes will provide a better user experience when using the maps. A few of the notable changes in this latest round of updates:
Improved display of road classification to emphasize network with additional roads appearing at larger scales. (See Japan sample above for before | after)
Change in label spacing to improve legibility at certain scales .
Expanding the display of Points of Interest out to smaller map scales.
Improved disputed boundary classification to allow for customized map displays.
These and other map specifications are provided in more detail in the Esri Vector Basemaps Reference Document.
-
Impact of Style Changes

Through Esri’s Community Maps Program your organization can contribute its local geographic content to Esri’s Living Atlas of the World. The data will be published and hosted by Esri as part of ArcGIS Online maps and layers. We produce one vector tile set which is then displayed through our 9 core map styles. This allows the contributed content to appear not only in the World Topographic vector basemap, but also all the other styles such as Streets at Night, Dark and Light Gray Canvas, and Navigation.
