Album Review: Pop Evil by Pop Evil (2018)
Pop Evil is back with another album. Itâs been about 2-3 years which is standard for these modern rock bands. My biggest issue with that last release was this lack of oomph. The band seemed flat. Unfortunately this album does not change that for me. Some of the songs are stronger, but it is still overall missing some body. Pop Evil is just a work in progress.
Key Tracks: âWaking Lionsâ, âBe Legendaryâ, âBirds of Preyâ

Michigan hard rockers Pop Evil released their latest self titled album on February 16, and it has to be their very best yet! As a long time fan of the band, I am simply amazed at the evolution of the bandâs new sound, a change I havenât heard since Avenged Sevenfold released The Stage in 2016. This sixth studio release from the band reminds us that rock and roll is revolution, and that we needâŠ

Hayley Cramer is a dynamic force behind the drum kit and in this edition of APTV's Two-Stick Stories, the Pop Evil powerhouse breaks down her approach to her instrument and the challenges of being a female drummer. "I never wanted to be the girl drummer that got the job just because she's a girl. I wanted to get the job with everybody having their eyes closed," said Cramer. Cramer can now be seen headlining shows with Pop Evil across the world and is currently sharing a stage with rock royalty acts Poison and Cheap Trick, but her origins behind the Pop Evil kit come from drumming along to "Rosanna" and anything and everything on the radio. Learn how a mash-up track made in Garage Band landed this English drummer the gig that she was made for in this in-depth APTV interview. Interview with POP EVIL
We had the pleasure of interviewing POP EVIL over Zoom audio!Â
Hard rock titans POP EVIL have set a career milestone as âBreathe Againâ becomes the sixth #1 rock single in their overall history joining previous #1 hits âWaking Lions,â âFootsteps,â âDeal with the Devil,â âTrenchesâ and the gold-certified âTorn to Pieces.â The track is featured on the bandâs upcoming May 21 album VERSATILE via Entertainment One (eOne) alongside previously shared singles âLet The Chaos Reign,â âWorkâ and âSet Me Free.â
If rock is dead, then POP EVIL is definitive proof of the afterlife. The Michigan-formed blue-collar bandâwhich consists of vocalist Leigh Kakaty alongside lead guitarist Nick Fuelling, rhythm guitarist Dave Grahs, bassist Matt DiRito and drummer Hayley Cramerâhave created an unpredictable album, as its name suggests, which presents their most ambitious rebirth yet. VERSATILE highlights the groupâs distinctive sound by zeroing in on their juxtaposition of cinematic melodies, heavy grooves, fist-pumping anthems and timeless power ballads while building on their foundation of showmanship, raw relatability, and timeless hard rock hooks.
VERSATILE is available for pre-order now via the official POP EVIL merch store and all orders will include an autographed postcard from the band: https://ift.tt/3tRaYd2. CDâs will be exclusively sold via Target, which will offer a two-disc deluxe edition version of VERSATILE. The special bonus disc will include the track listing from their 2020 #1âs LP. This consisted of all of their previous #1 singles listed above that were pressed on 180-gram opaque gold vinyl.
POP EVILâs success story extends beyond the charts, the 1 million units of âtotal activityâ across their catalog, and the 600+ million streams of their songs on major platformsâitâs the diverse group of fans the band has captivated with their relatable storytelling and undeniable catchiness on tour after tour with the whoâs who of the modern rock genre.

LIVE REVIEW/PHOTOS - Poison/Cheap Trick/Pop Evil
Nestled in the small town of Gilford, NH, about 40 minutes north of the capital, Concord, and on the shores of Lake Winnipesaukee the Bank of NH Pavilion at Meadowbrook is a newly renovated amphitheater with an 8,000-seat capacity including the lawn. A great place to see a show, enjoy a variety of food and wash it down with one of your favorite beverages, at somewhat reasonable prices (for a venue). Just make sure you have at least $10 in your wallet for the low cost, walking friendly parking or $20 for entrance side parking. After the show retire back to one of the many hotels, motels or cottages and stay a couple days â itâs worth it.
Kicking things off on this evening were Michigan rockers Pop Evil. When I first saw them on the bill with Cheap Trick and Poison I found it to be a bit of an odd pairing. As they hit the stage at 7pm sharp it didnât take long for me to see why they are a part of the tour. They may not fit the bill genre wise but the energy and showmanship they bring make for a great match. Led by Leigh Kakaty, Pop Evil delivered a 9 song setlist to a well-attended pavilion with the highlight coming with their closing song âTrenchesâ. Kakaty would jump from the stage and make his way through the crowd all the way to the back joining the lawn seat spectators. As the crowd swelled around him he would be lifted by the audience and deliver the final verses standing on a stage made of fans. Great way to connect with the crowd and build a following. If you havenât had the opportunity to see this quintet I highly recommend it. Iâve seen them in a variety of venues from small clubs to large festivals and itâs the same every time. They will give you your moneyâs worth!
Next up would be the true veterans on the tour, Cheap Trick. At this point the crowd was at full-force. The house was packed all the way to the back of the lawn. No doubt ticket-holders were there for not just the main event, Poison, there was equal excitement for the four plus decade Illinois rockers. With original members Robin Zander, Rick Nielsen & Tom Petersson, the Hall of Famers would amp up the audience with a 15 song setlist including their hits âI Want You to Want Meâ, âThe Flameâ and âSurrenderâ. I was never a big Cheap Trick fan but thereâs no denying after all these years they put on a heck of a high energy spectacle. Well worth rocking out to.
Closing out the night would be hair metals royalty, Poison. These guys sprang on to the scene in the mid-eighties with their monster debut Look What the Cat Dragged In and there was no looking back. Sure, there was a lull in the nineties just like all the others from the genre but with the turn of the century it wasnât long before bands like Poison and Motley Crue were lighting up arenas once again. Although there have been a few bumps along the way with lead singer Bret Michaels taking more interest in his own personal ventures, the quartet consisting of Bobby Dall on bass, Rikki Rocket on drums, C.C. Deville on guitar and Michaels would show no signs of any possible tension in the band. With the backdrop of a large video screen, plenty of lights flying all over the place and smoke machines they would hit the stage with the energy of a newly signed teenage band playing their first sold-out gig. It was a full-on rock show. These are the shows I grew up with that we were missing in the midst of the grunge movement. Shows you would walk away from with a smile on your face, excited to be alive and wanting to celebrate life. The lights, the videos, the magic of the musicians running all over the stage engaging the crowd. As Bret Michaels stated during one point during the show Poison doesnât cut corners or pack it in for a night, they deliver every single time for the hardworking fans that pay good money for their tickets. And he was dead on. From start to finish the hour and a half set would be non-stop fun. With some moments of seriousness whether it was their monster ballad âEvery Rose Has Itâs Thornâ or taking time to acknowledge the men and women of our military. And the best part there were no political messages or ulterior motives it was just about those that serve and protect all the people of our country. Classy move and no doubt sincere.Â
As the set wound down the vibe in the venue didnât. Although it was short I donât think there was any disappointment by the fans. They would manage to squeeze in all the hits. Michaels & company would close out the evening with a cover of Kissâ âRock and Roll All Niteâ joined onstage by Pop Evilâs Kakaty. And as the masses made their way to their vehicles it was like 1988 all over again, happy fans after a night of fun partying with one of 80âs best. And whether you grew up with Poison posters on your wall or werenât even born by the time their last big hit was released this show is for you. In this world of social media and all too often negativity itâs nice every once in a while, to have Nothinâ But A Good Time! Check them out on tour now while you can.

The Bands of Monster Energy Carolina Rebellion 2018:Â Pop Evil
Entering its eighth year, the Monster Energy Carolina Rebellion festival has transitioned from not just a cool event that is part of Worldâs Loudest Month, but one of the cornerstones of the month long series of festivals. Billed as the Mid-Atlantic's biggest rock festival, it expanded to a three-day event back in 2016 and hasnât looked back. An absolute beast of a festival, it drew more than 105,000 fans and music lovers to the Rock City Campgrounds at Charlotte Motor Speedway in Charlotte, NC last year, reaffirming the fact that event organizers Danny Wimmer Presents and AEG Presents have worked their magic yet again. Set for May 4th, 5th and 6th, expect 2018 to break another record, thanks to the stellar and diverse lineup that will be gracing the four stages over those three days. From rock to metal and a plethora of the subgenres (for those who want to get specific), it will all be represented, and this year Carolina Rebellion will even feature some bands that no one had been expecting. That smorgasbord of talent essentially ensures that 2018 is going to be another record breaking year for the festival; and it will almost certainly sell out in advance, so be quick in purchasing tickets. Interested in more? Then letâs take a look at one of the bands set to perform during that epic weekend⊠Pop Evil will be one of several acts performing some new material during their set at Carolina Rebellion; their self-titled LP due out just a couple of months before Worldâs Loudest Month kicks off.
Because of that, expect a fiercer, more impassioned Pop Evil than ever before. That may be difficult to imagine, though the lead single from Pop Evil, âWaking Lionsâ, sure suggests as much. Not only does it find the quintet back in top from, but also rare form as they do what they do best: churn out hard-hitting anthemic rock songs. Their catalog of songs is teeming with such tracks, and the longer that Pop Evil has been around, the more striking they become. Hence, why their latest material is shaping up to be capable of pushing them to another level. Another factor in that is Hayley Cramer, their newest addition (who has been sitting behind the kit for about a couple of years now) having no trouble filling the shoes of her predecessor, maintaining that ferocious percussion that has long been the backbone of Pop Evilâs music. A staple act of festivals such as Monster Energy Carolina Rebellion, it has been fun to watch Pop Evilâs progression over the past few years, going from a band that could pump up the early bird festival goers with ease, to becoming a key act with prime set times. Theyâve cut their teeth and risen through the ranks, and 2018 is looking like it will be the year that Pop Evil secures their spot as one of the strongest modern rock acts. Event Info: Friday â Sunday, May 4th â 6th, 2018 at Rock City Campgrounds at Charlotte Motor Speedway, Charlotte, NC. All ages. $89.50 for single day tickets | $199 for weekend admission | VIP and other options available.
