I had always been under the impression that the Franky Family planned the Great Trunk Heist well out in advance, but I guess not. Not sure if the fact that it was an impromptu decision is better or worse, to be honest.

So I've been playing The Great Ace Attorney, which is one of the newer games by Capcom that features the appearance of The Great Detective, Sherlock Holmes. (Annoyingly named Herlock Sholmes since this game came out before he was fully copyright free.) And I was trying to figure out what year the game took place in. I heard one character, Mael Strongheart, mention the "Great Exhibition", and immediately it hit me that he was talking about the World's Fair. But, you see, the World's Fair was only hosted in London twice. 1851, and 1862. The first Sherlock Holmes story, A Study In Scarlet, was published in 1887. "Oh, well. Guess they shifted one forward or one back." I figured. Except, hold on. Mael Stronghart mentions that he wants to make "Paris' World's Fair look like a toy shop." So, the World's Fair isn't new, and it's been hosted in France before? The first time France hosted the World's Fair was in 1855, and was the only other host before the UK's last fair. And the timing would still be mis-labeled. Except. Except.
On the Wikipedia page, I went searching for the World's Fair which presented the Eiffel Tower, as I was wondering if it would be this one. The Eiffel Tower was actually presented in 1889. Okay, coolio. Technically after the first Holmes story, but, this Exhibition was hosted in Paris, France. Not London, England. But there's another exception. In the 1889 World's Fair, France had the French Revolution on their minds. And so they themed the Fair around Revolution and Anti-Monarchy ideals. And so, quite a few countries chose to boycott the exhibition instead. And would you be surprised, that one of the groups on that list was the United Kingdom? This would line up quite perfectly with the events of the game. In 1887, Sherlock Holmes comes into existence with the publication of A Study In Scarlet, which in the canon of The Great Ace Attorney, is the first publication of his adventures. In 1889, Paris, France hosts the World's Faire, titled the Exposition Universelle.
The United Kingdom, a monarchy, boycotts this exhibition because it is anti-monarchy. That year or later, they decide, in TGAA, to host their own exhibition, to outshine the exhibition in which Paris dominated with their presentation of the Eiffel Tower, a feat of modern architecture.
Because Holmes is a prominent character in the game, he talks at times about the very stories he appears in, and references them as "Short stories". The very first short story to feature Holmes was A Scandal in Bohemia, published 1891. And within the events of the games, there are cases which strongly resemble: The Red-Headed League,
The Man with the Twisted Lip,
The Adventure of the Speckled Band,
and hints to a few others. The Red-Headed League is the earliest of these to occur, and being published in 1891, makes 1891 the latest possible year the events of TGAA could have occurred. Therefore!
I put it to you, dear reader, That the events of The Great Ace Attorney, published by Capcom Begin and occur throughout the year of 1891! And I probably could've avoided ALL of the World's Fair talk, but WHERE is the fun in that??

Autistic Anime Boys Prelims - Propaganda Division - Group 6
Tumblr media
Propaganda:
Kiriwo -
"Seems innocent at first and he's just a guy with a special interest in magic items, but watch out."
Arjuna -
"MASKING KING!!!!!! ok joke aside one of his biggest things is that he's super scared that if anyone gets too close to him they'll notice he's not perfect/has a 'secret darkness' (that's literally just a guy) and overall a lot of his storyline is a strong parallel for being neurodivergent and becoming more comfortable with accepting it. he's also super strict and hard on himself for any sort of failure that isn't in line with what's socially appropriate but at the same time he doesn't always have a good grasp on what that is which is how you get stuff like him blowing up a forest to try and impress someone. it also runs in his family bc his brother is autistic as hell too."
Sherlock -
"God, where do I start? I mean what Holmes adaptation, even if he's not the main character, would this be if he were not autistic coded? And our combo of autism and ADHD is absolute perfection, all tied up with a pretty, excitable face. Hit him with the crime hyperfixation and do not make him wear socks."
Apollo -
"Not canonically autistic but he has ZERO volume control plus he scripts/repeats stuff (“I’M FINE!!!”), sometimes mimics other people’s speech patterns (like replying “ja” to Klavier), sensitive to loud noises (stayed backstage at a concert cuz it was too loud) and bright lights (complained about the stage lights being too bright at the same concert + screamed when opening the hatch to the bright stage at magic show), and has been really into space since he was a kid, which could definitely be a hyperfixation (not to mention how he read every single one of Phoenix’s old case files back when he admired him). Plus he’s a little TOO normal, to the point where it circles back around to making him the odd one out, which is absolutely what masking feels like for me. Even when he tries to be fun and weird he gets strange looks/made fun of for not being weird in the right way. The list of autism symptoms is just a checklist for him at this point."
Heiji -
"90% of the cast in detective conan is autistic but heiji is the most autistic of them all."
Urara -
"Another alien who is so excited to dance with everyone that he does not understand that his intended purpose of inviting people to dance via water communication is brainwashing them into dancing and is causing extreme chaos. He nearly causes an apocalypse by being so excited about dancing but he apologizes and tries to make friends with Yuki at the end of the story. He is extremely soft spoken and try, finding it difficult to begin conversations and fidgeting."
Shu -
"speaking specifically about the first season but he was the "explains everything so the audience knows whats happening" guy. he was pretty antisocial (not sure if thats just how he was or if he lived alone [which was fucked up cause he was 11]) . im trying to think of more but my brain goes hghghhhggggh im just a big fan of him."
Vash -
"ain’t no way i’m the only one who’s submitted him. go look at the gif of him crawling in the dirt like a bug while he dodges bullets and get back to me."
Hyakkimaru -
"Due to a terrible curse he has lived his whole life without several body parts including his eyes and ears. Because of this he is often overstimulated and awkward in new situations (when he doesn't do what he does best, killing monsters and samurai with his sword arms) He can't say or express much, and often comes off as strange and creepy, but he is actually a cutie patootie full of emotions, has a big heart, a keen brain, endless inner strength and loves the people close to him! This adorable, cursed, demon slaying boy deserves everything!"
Kei -
"He has the tbh face. Also he canonically has sensory issues and gets sensory overload. He constantly wears earbuds. He has an extremely rigid sense of morality and considers himself a savior figure. He has a hard time relating to other people and is a bit awkward in his interactions."

the promised Ryulock/Homumiko essay
So a few days ago, I made this post as a joke about the fact that there's just as much evidence for Ryulock as there is for Homumiko and left it on "In this essay, I will" because I thought it would be funny. I have decided to follow up on that joking comment because I feel like it (but also I'm with everyone who questions how/why Ryulock isn't more popular, you have two games' worth of content. I also mentioned at some point that I wanted to analyze the similarities between Sholmes's dynamic with Ryunosuke and his dynamic with Mikotoba). So, here's a Ryulock and Homumiko essay. Spoilers for both The Great Ace Attorney: Adventures and The Great Ace Attorney 2: Resolve will be present here, you have been warned.
Part 1: Ryunosuke's Role in Sholmes's Life
From their first meeting in The Adventure of the Unbreakable Speckled Band, Ryunosuke has fulfilled a specific role in Sholmes's life. The role of John H. Watson. This isn't as obvious as Mikotoba's dynamic with Sholmes (in fact, I never really acknowledged that Ryunosuke was fulfilling the role of Waston until after I finished the duology, and posted about Sholmes and Mikotoba's dynamic reminding me of Sherlock Holmes and John Watson), but it's still notable enough that The Watson is a trope under Ryunosuke's tropes on the TVTropes page for The Great Ace Attorney's main cast.
We can go even further and compare the third Dance of Deduction in The Adventure of the Unbreakable Speckled Band to the last Dance of Deduction in the duology (the former involving Ryu and Sholmes and the latter involving Sholmes and Mikotoba). In both, Sholmes is taking the situation seriously; he just found out that Kazuma was Ryunosuke's best friend in Speckled Band and so wanted to find the truth about what happened so Ryunosuke couldn't be incriminated anymore, and he was on a time crunch to find Jigoku in The Resolve of Ryunosuke Naruhodo because Jigoku was on his way out of Europe. Both have Sholmes taking the deduction incredibly seriously compared to his other deductions, and they involve Ryunosuke and Mikotoba essentially filling in the blanks for Sholmes, instead of correcting him like the other deductions in the duology.
Ryunouke keeps this role throughout the rest of the duology. Sholmes shows up at the scene of a crime Ryu's client is accused of, they investigate the crime together and do a dance of deduction, and they figure out what happened; this usually (always) seems unrelated to the case, before it gets revealed that it is related to the case. The primary difference between Sholmes's dynamic with Miktoba and his dynamic with Ryunosuke here is that Sholmes's dances of deduction always benefit Ryunosuke in more ways than one, and they're usually important to his case. Basically, Ryunosuke being a lawyer slightly changes his dynamic with Sholmes, because one of the purposes of Ryu and Sholmes's dances of deduction is for Ryu to develop his abductive reasoning skills, which helps him in court.
Ryunosuke and Mikotoba effectively serve the same role in Sholmes's life (that being, they're both his investigative partners at different points in time) but they have different benefits from doing so.
Part 2: Sherlock Holmes and John Watson Dynamics Are Always Gay
This is one of the most iconic parts of Sherlock Holmes. To be clear, I haven't read the original Sherlock Holmes stories. However, I am 100% comfortable saying that, based on the excerpts I have read, Watson and Sholmes have one of the most homoerotic dynamics in fiction. This always carries over into adaptations, and The Great Ace Attorney is no exception with Mikotoba or Ryunosuke (although I would argue that the dynamics are still a little different).
On Mikotoba's end, it's both confirmed in official art and implied in dialogue that between Mikotoba helping deliver Iris and him going back to Japan, Mikotoba and Sholmes were raising Iris together, and he says that he left Iris with Sholmes because he couldn't take her back to Japan. This can be read a few ways, but I thought it was worth mentioning here.
Outside of what's mentioned/referenced, we also have what is seen in real time in the last two cases of Resolve. Sholmes and Mikotoba have kept in contact via telegram for a decade, Sholmes tells Mikotoba that the sight of him is "making his mouth water" (which I'm convinced is a reference to Ryunosuke saying "So you'd eat your friends. I'll remember that." but it also definitely comes off as very gay). Mikotoba also refers to 221B as "our home", referring to himself and Sholmes. I also think it's notable that Mikotoba regains consciousness and is immediately dragged off by Sholmes to do an investigation.
On Ryunosuke's end, dear god there's a lot (to be clear, there's more on Ryunosuke's end because he spends more time with Sholmes on-screen than Mikotoba does, not because one is inherently more canon than the other or anything). Let's go through a non-comprehensive list (because I'm thinking of most of these off the top of my head), in no particular order:
Sholmes claims Ryunosuke not being in handcuffs throws the balance off, because he'll always imagine Ryunosuke with handcuffs (The Adventure of the Unbreakable Speckled Band)
Susato teases Ryunosuke about being excited to dance around with Sholmes during the first dance of deduction, and Ryunosuke looks happy with himself from the beginning of the first dance of deduction (The Adventure of the Unbreakable Speckled Band)
Ryunosuke seems only slightly less excited to be seeing Sholmes again than Susato (The Adventure of the Clouded Kokoro)
This entire conversation that is implied to have happened right after Ryunosuke got out of bed and downstairs (The Memoirs of the Clouded Kokoro)
Sholmes putting all his weight on Ryunosuke in that commemorative photograph that was taken before Susato left England (first shows up in The Adventure of the Unspeakable Story, shows up on Ryunosuke's shelf later)
Sholmes putting his hands on Ryunosuke's neck because "Blood loss has made my hands cold, Mr. Naruhodo! Have a feel!" (The Adventure of the Unspeakable Story)
Ryunosuke calling Sholmes in drag "stunning" (The Adventure of the Unspeakable Story)
Sholmes referring to Ryunosuke as "something of a manservant around here" because he hasn't been doing much other than helping around the flat since being disbarred (The Return of the Great Departed Soul)
Ryunosuke referring to Sholmes being knocked out during a dance of deduction as Sholmes "leaving him alone on the ballroom floor" (Twisted Karma and his Last Bow)
And that's not even all of it, I can guarantee it. Those are just the ones I remember best because they stand out to me. Sholmes's dynamic with both Mikotoba and Ryunosuke are incredibly gay.
Part 3: Sholmes's Relationship to Dances of Deduction
This is an interesting topic to cover, and this topic is going to be more an analysis of Sholmes than statement of canon fact. We know Sholmes is perfectly adept at accurate deductions, and it's indicated as early as The Adventure of the Unbreakable Speckled Band that he's purposely making bad deductions. We see how his deductions usually work when he's not goofing off in The Unbreakable Speckled Band, in fact. So that then begs the question, why is he so adamant about pretending to be bad at deduction, even when Ryu proves his own ability to make accurate deductions? Sure, helping Sholmes allows him to practice those abilities, but the more serious dances of deduction where Sholmes's "dance" partner is filling in the blanks would serve the same purpose, and it's something literally anyone could do.
I'd also like to clarify something here: Susato doesn't get directly involved in a dance of deduction until Sholmes is unavailable, and even then Ryunosuke treats it like a solo act (specifically stating "He's left me alone on the ballroom floor, so I'm going to have to do this next part solo"). Susato assists Ryunosuke during dances of deduction, sure, but her involvement doesn't go beyond that with the exception of when Sholmes gets knocked unconscious.
So back to the question at hand, why does Sholmes do dances of deduction seemingly exclusively with Ryu and Mikotoba? I don't think it's a coincidence. I do think it's because dances of deduction aren't platonic for him. Sholmes and Ryunosuke's especially come off as a couple's dance to me, although part of it does come from Ryunosuke indirectly comparing it to a ballroom dance, the most popular of which for pairs in the Victorian era was the waltz (which is traditionally a couple's dance). So I do think that, for Sholmes and very probably Ryu at the very least, dances of deduction are either romantic, erotic, or both.
This leads back around to the original question. I've already established that Sholmes's dynamics with Ryunosuke and Mikotoba are both incredibly gay. I also just established that Ryunosuke indirectly compares dances of deduction to a ballroom dance, in this case a waltz. Dances of deduction are always a partnered thing, and Sholmes is only ever seen doing them with Mikotoba and Ryunosuke. I don't think it'd be a stretch to claim that Sholmes makes them gay on purpose. For what purpose you ask? Male companionship, obviously.
I'm kidding about that but I do think Sholmes does it to have another companion that isn't Iris, at least in Ryunosuke's case. In Mikotoba's case, it likely came from wanting companionship at all. We know Sholmes is an attention whore, and I feel like being as important a part of someone's life as he was to Mikotoba while Mikotoba was studying in England strooked that a bit. I also wouldn't be surprised if Ryu reminded Sholmes of Mikotoba on some level (both are Japanese students studying in Britain for the time Sholmes lives with them).
Part 4: Conclusion (AKA I'm tired so I'm stopping myself before I pass out on my keyboard)
In conclusion, there are so many similarities between the Ryulock and Homumiko dynamics that I feel go unacknowledged. It is not a coincidence that Sholmes's dynamics with these two specifically is so fucking gay. Like I don't know if it's just me but playing as Mikotoba in the last dance of deduction didn't feel much different than playing as Ryunosuke, besides slight differences in dynamics because Mikotoba's known Sholmes longer than Ryunosuke has. Aside from that detail, if Mikotoba hadn't been clearly who Sholmes was with, I would've absolutely thought he was with Ryunosuke. Sholmes has a type and that type is quirky guys who are fun to tease.

You know, I've been thinking about how great it would be to crossover the Great Ace Attorney and Gravity Falls. There's so many good ideas, I'd be here for hours listing them all, but here are my main things:
You could have Dipper and Mabel getting chased through time by Wax Holmes (somehow, don't question it) and end up in Victorian London. Sherlock Holmes vs Sherlock Holmes is the main idea here
Sherlock ends up stuck in 2012 and immediately realizes Stan is lying about everything
Ryu, Susato, and Sherlock visit the future and Dipper realizes that Sherlock is lying about Kazuma
Sherlock and Mabel as a dynamic. The world is no longer safe
Sherlock and Ford in the same room. Would they be best friends or instantly get into a fist fight? Who knows!
Sherlock realizes that Old Man McGucket is actually suffering and not some crazy old guy
But my favorite?
If there was any mind that Bill would target to build him a portal, it would be Sherlock. No question. He's capable of making holograms, for God's sake.
But just one problem: Sherlock is far too smart to trick. So how do you do it? How do you get a man so clever to do your bidding?
Simple.
Tumblr media
You make him.
Okay I wanted to end it there but I had some ideas for the Bill thing specifically, sooo... yeah. No dramatic cliffhanger, I guess.
Obviously, Sherlock can't defeat Bill forever. He won't be stopped for another hundred years, so how does Bill punish Sherlock for winning?
My idea? Bill erases Sherlock and his friends from all memory. As in, nobody remembers that Sherlock was anything more than a story. He shall not be remembered as a real man with real exploits, just an idea in some crazy guy's head. And his friends suffer the same. No matter how much Iris Watson or Barok van Zieks or Ryuunosuke Naruhodou accomplish, no one will ever know they existed. Their achievements are associated with someone else, and they are forgotten.
Up until 2012, where Bill is defeated once and for all, and the curse is lifted. The world blinks, and names reappear in the history books. Franziska von Karma stares in amazement at the old case record she's studying as information corrects itself on the page. Statues appear at the historic Crown Court building in London. Every copy of Sherlock Holmes fixes the name of the author.
And, well. Gravity Falls is already filled with ghosts. It's not hard for Sherlock and Co. to drop by the Pines family and offer their thanks.

I do love the “herlock sholmes” thing btw. I know in the japanese version he is actually just sherlock holmes and herlock sholmes comes from the weird copyright chokehold the arthur conan doyle estate has in the US but it works out because it’s just so delightfully ace attorney. also it’s going to make searching for this very specific version of the character much easier.

Upcoming Takarazuka/Great Ace Attorney Musical
Takarazuka Revue, a long-standing all-female theater troupe in Japan, was the first to do an adaptation of Ace Attorney in 2009, with their two musicals Ace Attorney: The Truth Reborn (a musical loosely based on Rise from the Ashes) and Ace Attorney 2: The Truth Reborn Again (a musical loosely based on Farewell my Turnabout). This was followed in 2013 by a Miles Edgeworth-centric musical involving time travel.
Now, ten years since Takarazuka’s last attempt to bring Ace Attorney to musical life, they’re returning with a fourth musical (link goes to official Capcom announcement in Japanese), this time based off of the Great Ace Attorney games.
Like the previous three musicals, this will be performed by Takarazuka’s Cosmos Troupe. It will also be directed by Suzuki Kei, who directed the other three Ace Attorney musicals. According to the official Takarazuka page, as of right now, they plan two runs in July and August 2023:
July 19th - July 26th 2023 at the Umeda Arts Theater in Osaka, Japan
August 1st - August 8th 2023 at the KAAT Kanagawa Arts Theater in Yokohama, Japan
So far, cast lists have not been announced, except that the actress Rukaze Hikaru will be playing the lead role of Ryunosuke Naruhodo, and judging by the synopsis, Susato Mikotoba and Herlock Sholmes will also be present.
A (google translated) synopsis from the Takarazuka page (with minor modifications + square bracket notes for clarity):
A stage adaptation of the blockbuster "Great Gyakuten Saiban" [Great Ace Attorney] featuring Ryunosuke Naruhodo, the ancestor of Ryuichi Naruhodo [Phoenix Wright]! Set in a courtroom, the game "Gyakuten Saiban" is a popular series that has sold more than 9.8 million copies in total. The unique characters and intricately crafted storylines have garnered tremendous support, and have been mixed in media such as movies and TV animations, not limited to games. In the Takarazuka Revue, after its first performance in Sora [Cosmos] Troupe in 2009, "Ace Attorney 2" was performed in the same year, and "Ace Attorney 3" was performed in 2013, both of which were very popular works. Ryunosuke Naruhodo, a college student who aspires to become a lawyer, goes from the Empire of Japan in the Meiji era to study abroad in the British Empire with the World Exposition just around the corner, in order to learn about the latest judicial system. Ryunosuke, who is involved in one difficult case after another, stands up for his client with judicial assistant Susato, but the great detective of the century, Sherlock Holmes, appears... From the famous line "There is an objection!"
From this synopsis, there is little information on what specific cases may be loosely adapted, or what other similarities the musical may share with the games.
To clarify for English-speaking AA fans, as I understand it, Takarazuka does not translate their plays, so any fans who are interested will have to either wait for fan subtitles or find a way to watch a recording (possibly dvd release, if they’ll do that for this one) without them.
I’ll try to update this post as new information is released. Please let me know if there is anything that I missed or is incorrect that you would like me to add.

bro can you help me is that manga dad sherlock a real manga i want to read it
I WISH BUT..... I have no idea about that manga specifically but in The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles, Holmes shows an incredibly tender and adorable fatherly side to him for his adopted daughter. There's a lot of content regarding "Herlock Sholmes"! I highly encourage you to play the game if you enjoy ace attorney in any way :] No Watson in it, unfortunately, but it's still incredibly good.

Note
the only holmes/watson I'm down for is herlock sholmes/mikotoba from ace attorney. it's not prominently featured or anything but it's a delight. tgaac1&2 aren't great games imo but I am obsessed with those two specifically. absolutely incredible
this message is literally how i learned ace attorney is a video game and not a show?? and also involves sherlock holmes??? well, to each their own ✌🏽

Note
I have hit Post Limit so I am responding here:
So Lupin the Third:
This is an Adult series written specifically for Adults. It's crude, sexual, and violent. It is also complex and heartwarming and MOST OF ALL: IT'S HILARIOUS
Lupin III has the slapstick flirty hilarity that original Loony Tunes has but for more adult audiences. Lupin definitely has a joy of life and mischievous Buggs Bunny energy to him.
Arsene Lupin III is the third of a line of master thieves. This manga from the 60's (technically ongoing) and anime from the 80's is (very very very very loosely) based off of the french Arsene Lupin stories where Famous detective Herlock Sholmes chases after the titular master theif who bests Herlock on many occasions. (Originally it was Arsene Lupin v Sherlock Holmes but that was a very early and famous case of IP/Copyright and his name was changed).
Lupin's partners Jigen Daisuke (half Italian and half Japanese raised in NY half his life) and Goemon Ishikawa XIII (descended from a Samurai theif from IRL history) work with him to pull off incredible capers.
Goemon is a master swordsman with yakuza history and Jigen is a master marksman with mob history.
Lupin is in love with Fujiko Mine another master theif (imo) who is the femme Fatale of the series. She's sometimes a member of the gang and sometimes not. Lupin will do almost anything to get into her pants and she uses that to her advantage regularly to manipulate him into stealing things for her. She's sort of similar to Nami from One Piece in a lot of ways.
Zenigata is the intrepid Inspector/Detective thats chasing after our titular theif and his gang. He's a lot like Gumshoe from Ace Attorney. He's sweet, and deeply cares about Justice and Lupin is his Arch Rival. His luck is terrible and his pay is low but the people that love him are very loyal. He will chase Lupin to the ends of the earth. He's a major comic relief character even in the more serious entries.
Hayao Miyazaki worked on Lupin III in the second half of the first arch Green Jacket and the movie Castle of Cagliostro was his first big movie break. They're beautiful to watch and very heartwarming and he had a lasting effect on the media canon.
A lot of this information will be repeated in the video essays I'm about to reccomend but honestly she'll do a WAAAAY better job of singing this series praises than I will.
Check out the video essays by @infinitesnowpro (Infinite Snow Productions on youtube).
Her essays -Miyazaki's Lupin- and - The Mystery of Mamo (Will be in the Criterion Collection) - are fantastic and the Miyazaki Lupin video confirmed some of my suspicions about Green Jacket.
She goes over good places to start in the video but if you want a small taste : Lupin the 3rd The First is on Netflix I believe. It'll give you an idea of what the characters are generally like.
Some of the series is on TMJ's official YouTube. They actually put a lot of their stuff on their channel for free. Not just Lupin stuff.
My favorite arch is Red Jacket the second arch but I watched Red Jacket for the first time back in the mid to late 00's so it'll always have a special place in my heart. ❤
If you like funny cops vs robbers type storylines and like a lot of the tropes of detective or heist media I think you'd like it. It's a very fun watch.
It's infinitely memeable and there's a ton of hilarious shorts compilations and soundbites floating around the internet.
The music is fantastic btw. There's compilations on youtube thst are like an hour or more in length under funny names that reference memes and they're nice to listen to while doing housework. -It's a beautiful morning and you're a Terrible Theif- or -A five minute egg cooks in 5 minutes- etc.
Bonus: As a series for adults with adult characters it will appeal to Middle Aged Men Enthusiasts so even if that's all anyone takes out of it I've still done my job promoting it. o7
sounds cool as fuck 👍
