Shutting the fire truck door I ran a hand through my hair that was in a ponytail. Brett closed up the ambulance door coming over to me with a cheerful smile on her face. “So when’s the wedding future Mrs. Halstead?”
“We’ve been tossing around the idea of getting married at city hall and then doing a bigger then if I come back from deployment.”
Brett snapped back at me sharply. “You mean when you come back from deployment. I cannot have one of my closest friends dying on me now.”
“Trust me, Brett. It isn’t the way I’d like to go. “I nervously chuckled clasping my hands in front of my chest hearing my phone vibrating inside my jacket pocket. “Speaking of my soon to be husband, hey Will.”
He switched the phone call to video where I saw he was sitting in the locker room he stored his work bag in at the hospital. “Mal, I just called Jay and he said he can get all our friends together before tonight at Molly’s to tell them the big news.”
“Will, everyone pretty much already knew when I showed up to work wearing your mom’s wedding ring. I think you only have to tell your hospital work friends about the fact that we’re engaged.”
He slightly rolled his eyes at me. “Fine, fine, either way I am super excited for tonight. I only get so many more days with my favorite girl and her dog.”
“Don’t remind me, Halstead!” Brett shouted over my shoulder.
Shaking my head I put my focus back on my fiancés. “Anyway, where we’re we?”
“I just wanted to call you and say I miss and I love you. And I am having Connor come over after work to help move your stuff over into my apartment. I already talked with the landlord, and she said it was no problem that we combined into one apartment if we do not miss our payment.”
Throwing my head back I smirked knowing he had most of this figured out way before we had our last date. “You are the best. Is there something specific you want me to wear tonight at Molly’s?”
“How about that short black and red dress we got at the store the other day.” Will smirked back at me.
My face began to turn red at the thought considering what we had agreed upon when I wore said dress. “I thought that was only to be worn in the apartment when we – you know..”
“No I don’t know. You might have to say it.”
I glared at the ginger head. “No way.”
“Then I guess you won’t get to kiss me until tomorrow morning.” Will teased me with a cheeky smile across his face. He playfully chuckled trying to be all serious.
Brett grinned leaning her body against the side of the ambulance vehicle. “You two are going to make great parents one day.”
“I think we’re far beyond the discussion of babies, Brett.” I glanced back over at her.
She shrugged her shoulders before the call alarm went off meaning we had a case to get tend to. “I wouldn’t be too sure about that.”
“I’m gonna miss you, Mal.” Will smiled seeing me glancing over my shoulder knowing we had a call to answer.
Leaning up on my toes I waved bye, finally climbing up inside the passenger seat of one of the fire trucks. Will watched the trucks pull out before his phone vibrates so he ends the video call. “We need to talk about something important. It may effect your soon to be wife and you. Meet me in the hospital parking lot after your shift.” – from Jay read the text message on his phone.
Two months later – Afghanistan
Running through buildings Maxon ahead of our unit tries leading us away from the firing squad. Bullets fly over our heads with my boots splashing in mud and blood. "Mallory, we're taking up heavy fire!" Luke called out as I fired a shot at an Afghanistan who jumped down from a window trying to kill us.
Maxon barks digging away a hidden room in the bottom of a hideout. I order the rest of my team inside but a bullet gets shot into Luke's leg. "Luke!" I pull him down into the room with Kyle jumping down last. Pulling the door closed with the attached rope between his teeth. Tearing a piece of my shirt off Luke tried to talk.
"Mal go, get the others out of here-" I cut him shacking my head no with my ponytail falling over my left shoulder.
"Stop talking Luke. I'm not leaving you. If I can help you in some way I'm sure as heck going too." Kyle suddenly tugged my shirt when Luke and I are on our feet, dragging us outside with the others. "What is it-" I cut myself off collapsing into the dust hearing rounds of gunfire and an explosion ringing in my ears.
The next time I opened my eyes I felt a cold wet rag being dabbed against my forehead mintues before I was able to realize that it was my former Doctor who treated my leg when I returned home the first time. He placed the rag down on the nearest table picking up the chart that he had been taking notes down on about something. “Ms. Easton, I have been waiting for you to get some more rest. I have news I need to talk to you about.”
“What are we talking about, Dr. Owen’s?” I questioned him still slowly regaining consciousness.
He flipped over another page from his chart. “After the explosion I ran some tests just to make sure you were alright and weren’t injured. And I found something when one of my female nurses suggested a change in the physical appearance of your stomach. I have to ask when was the last time you had your period?”
“Um – I know I had it before I was deployed out here. Why do you need to know?”
Dr. Owen’s lifted his gaze up from the clipboard. “It appears that you are two months pregnant, Ms. Easton. Given the circumstances I have called you Lieutenant and he’s decided that we’re sending you home. So congratulations are in order for you and the babies father.” My mouth hung opened in utter shock where I couldn’t believe what he had just told me. I knew Will and I had slept together but I didn’t think it would only take one time for that to happen. We couldn’t possibly be parents, we weren’t even married yet.

The Fragile Bonds Part 2 || Jay and Will Halstead x Halstead Sister
*re-posting this because I'm stupid and accidentaly erased my blog 🫠

Summary: After their father's death, Becca moved in with Jay. This is the first time the detective brother has to go undercover since his sister has been under his full care, creating a challenging situation for both. Reluctantly, Becca will have to live with Will and his family during those days, even though she doesn't feel very welcome in that household.
Tuesday morning passed by slowly, but Becca preferred it that way. Despite all the things going around her, she was able to concentrate in her classes. Anyway, as the time for school to end approached, a knot was forming in her stomach. She didn’t want to go back to Will’s house, it made her anxious. The exit bell rang and she sat on the entrance stairs until she was left alone.
“I call your brother, but he’s not answering”, one of her teachers said as he invited her to pass to the office.
“I can walk myself”, Becca argued, but Jay had given specific orders on not letting her go alone. If he couldn’t pick her up, the other ones on the list were Will, Hailey and also Sgt. Platt, but she wished they wouldn’t bother anybody from the district.
“I’m so, so sorry!” Will came running into the building, “I totally forgot, I got no excuse”. The principal’s gaze was all over the Halstead brother, observing him with a not so friendly look. “I had to pick Owen from daycare, and this is out of my routine, sorry”, he kept apologizing, which for the girl made it even worse.
“It’s alright, Will. Just let’s get out of here, please”.
Even when she couldn’t admit it, Becca was affected by what had happened earlier. So, as soon as they arrived home, she took a cellphone out of the nightstand. Jay didn’t allow his sister to own a phone, but he had lent her one just as a way of precaution, it had his number saved, but also Hailey’s, Trudy and even Voight, just in case of an emergency. After all, he was an overprotective and paranoic brother. He said he would communicate with her through it, whenever he had time to do so.
But there were no traces of Jay. The girl opened his contact and decided to write a text,
I hope you’re doing well, I miss u
She hesitated to press the send button, but as soon as she did, a message appeared on the screen: not delivered. Becca sighed and threw the phone on the bed.
She started to feel hopeless, as if she didn't belong anywhere. She held Mr. Snuggles while thinking about her detective brother, she wondered where he was and what he was doing at the moment, if he was alright or if he was hurt. Then, she imagined herself at the bullpen, waiting for him to finish his paperwork, as it had happened a few times; it was a warm feeling to be surrounded by Jay’s friends even when it was only in her mind. She continued figuring a normal day in her life, her brother by her side, going home, sleeping in her own bed, and just like that she fell deep asleep.
“Hey! Hey, kiddo!” A voice was heard in the distance, some babbling accompanied it. “Becc, wake up” a touch on her shoulder made her slowly open her eyes. "I'm sorry, I didn't want to scare you", Will was bending right next to the bed carrying Owen in his arms.
She took a quick look around, it was already dark and a chill ran through her body, it was also getting cold. For a few seconds, she felt very confused for not waking up in her room, then she suddenly remembered everything and reality weighed on her chest, she felt like crying, but was able to hold her tears.
"Dinner is ready, come on. I just realized you didn't eat anything when we arrived home", he invited.
"I'm not really hungry, but I'm so tired, I'd rather sleep", the girl went back to the same position.
"Becc", her brother scoffed.
“Ok, I’ll try.”
The table was already set when Becca came into the kitchen, but there were only three plates on it. Will had his back turned to her, working on the stove.
"Where's Natalie?"
"At The Med," Will answered simply, without even looking at her. "She'll be back soon."
"How is it that you're not at the hospital? Actually, how is it that you haven't been at the hospital these days?"
"Well, when Jay told me he was going undercover..." He turned to the table, carrying a pan to serve the food on Becca's plate. "...I asked to change my schedule with some of my partners so I could stay here with you."
"Oh."
"Yeah, we talked about it, and we didn't— I didn't want you to be here all by yourself. I know we are not as close as you and Jay are, but... I'm still your big brother, and you're still my little sister, so I also thought it could be a great opportunity for the two of us to spend some time together, but it seems that I have screwed it all up."
"No—" Becca couldn't find any argument against what he had said.
"It's fine. I know these two days haven't been precisely comfortable for you, and I'm sorry for that." Will sat right in front of his sister, Owen on his side, so he could help him eat.
Becca was pensive, moving her food around with the fork. "I'm sorry if this caused you any problems." She didn't mean at work, but at home, and Will knew it.
"No... not at all." He sighed. "Now, let's eat before this gets cold," he said hurriedly, not wanting to get into the matter.
"I-I don't want to be rude, but I can't eat this, Will."
"Why?" He asked, surprised.
"My throat would close if I did... I'm allergic to fish?"
"Oh, fuu–, I totally forgot!" The red-haired man took his hands to his face. "I'm an idiot, I'm so sorry! I'll prepare something else for you!" He said while standing up.
At the same time, the front door opened, and a voice calling out was heard, "I'm home!"
Becca's heart began to race, a surge of anxiety washing over her when she heard Natalie's voice at the door, "No, it's okay, Will. Really, I'm not hungry."
"Don't be silly, sit down!"
"What's going on?" Natalie came into the scene.
"Nothing," the girl interrupted before her brother could talk. "I was about to go to bed. Good night."
With an empty and growling stomach, she prepared herself for bed. Before attempting to sleep, she picked up her phone, only to discover 8 missed calls from Detective Upton. 'Shit,' she muttered. She immediately called her back. When he answered, a cacophony of background noises filled the line.
“Hey, Beccs” She was close enough to the girl to call her by nicknames, “I called you earlier, but you didn’t answer”.
“Yeah, I didn’t have the phone close to me, sorry”.
“It’s ok. I was with your brother earlier. I met him at a secret spot, and he wanted to talk to you and check how you're doing..."
Becca's heart sank, a wave of regret and sadness washing over her. The urge to cry reappeared, her voice quivering as she replied, "Oh, crap, and I wasn't here..."
“Don’t worry, hunny, there wasn’t enough time, anyway. He ask me to tell you he’s doing fine, and algo wanted me to make sure how you’re doing at Will’s”.
The uncomfortable silence worried Hailey, “Becca?”
“Honestly, I feel like an intruder,” she regretted her words as soon as they came out of her mind, “Oh, but don’t tell that to Jay. I don’t know, I’m fine, I’ll just be better when I go back home”:
“This might end sooner than we thought”. A raspy voice was heard in the background before Hailey had to say goodbye, “Gotta go, girl, but hey, call me whenever you need it, even if it’s just to talk. Anything”.
“Thanks, Hails.”
“I love you.”
“I love you too”. Becca stared at the ceiling.
So many changes were swirling through her life in such a brief span of time. The absence of Jay, the first time they had been apart since it had been just the two of them, was tearing at her heart far more intensely than she had ever anticipated. She had barely begun to acclimate to her new routine, her altered existence, when the clandestine situation had thrust itself upon her.
The weight of missing the chance to talk to Jay pressed heavily on her heart, and it felt like a crushing burden. It made her feel incredibly sensitive, and this time, the tears flowed freely, unable to be contained. She clutched Mr. Snuggles tightly, seeking solace in the familiar stuffed bear's embrace, her stomach rumbling audibly from the gnawing hunger that consumed her.
In this moment of vulnerability, she longed for the comforting embrace of home, a warmth that she found sorely absent here. Hearing Hailey's voice had momentarily rekindled that sense of homecoming. With a deep sigh, she closed her eyes tightly, yearning not to be in her current circumstances, wishing fervently for a return to the normality of the past.
Her mind drifted back in time, to the familiarity of their old house, the echoes of childhood laughter, and even the presence of her once-gruff father, who had passed away just a few months ago. The wave of nostalgia mingled with the ache of longing, and tears welled up in her eyes, as the weight of change and the pangs of homesickness bore down upon her.
The harmful impulses she had experienced in the past surged through her body like a relentless wave. But she wasn't going to succumb, she thought of Jay and Hailey to find strength within herself.
Tomorrow, she would have her dance class, and that would help her forget everything. Besides, it meant spending less time in that house.
The morning flew by quickly, leaving Becca feeling both desperate and excited for her dance lessons. She was practicing extra hours after class with her teacher, who had recognized her potential. Dancing was her sanctuary, the place where she could unshackle the stress that had been building, release the pent-up tension, and untangle the knots in her mind. It was where she felt truly free, blissfully happy, and capable of doing something right. That's why Jay had always made it a point to ensure she never missed a lesson, and he had also made sure to discuss it with Will before leaving his sister under his care.
Things took a slight detour when, at the end of the school day, Becca noticed Natalie's car outside the building. "Where's Will?" she asked after greeting, still standing outside the car.
"He couldn't change his shift today, sorry. I'm taking you home. Come on," Natalie replied with a tender smile. Even though the atmosphere was calm, Owen's babbling was the only thing preventing total silence.
"I have my dance class today," Becca mentioned as they hit the road.
"I know, Will told me. I'm taking you, don't worry." Natalie assured her.
Becca got ready an hour ahead of their scheduled departure time. She dressed in her black leotard, pink tights, and black leggings layered on top. Her ballet slippers and jazz shoes were neatly packed inside her bag. After preparing, she stepped out of her room and waited in the living room.
Natalie noticed her early readiness and asked in a motherly tone that Becca didn't particularly like, "Did you finish your homework?"
"Uh, yes," Becca replied with a small white lie.
Natalie glanced at the clock and said, "It's still early; we can leave in half an hour, and you'll make it in time."
"Yeah, I know. I was just getting everything ready," Becca replied, pretending to check her bag. She then paused and looked at Natalie sincerely. "Thank you, Nat. For letting me stay and driving me today. I'm not your responsibility..."
Natalie shook her head gently and said, "Nonsense. Don't worry about any of that. Oh, by the way, at what time do I pick you up? Will didn't say."
"I have to stay after class; I finish at 9, but usually, I'm free a bit later," Becca explained.
"Uh, Becca, that's too late, I—"
"No, no, no," Becca rushed to respond. "I can talk to my teacher. I'll tell her that I can't stay beyond 9, and she'll be understanding about it."
Natalie's expression revealed pity as she said, "I can't pick you up that late, it's past Owen's bedtime."
"But I can't miss this! Jay told Will how important it is!" Becca's voice quivered with desperation, her eyes welling up with tears as she tried to plead her case.
The girl couldn't find any comfort, as Natalie's tone grew increasingly stern. "I'm sorry, Becca. It's too late, I wouldn't have agreed to this if Will had told me all the information."
Becca's desperation deepened, a sinking feeling in her chest erasing any sense of well-being. She felt trapped, as if her dreams were slipping through her fingers.
"I can take an Uber back home," Becca suggested, her voice trembling with the fear of Jay's reaction.
"Jay would kill me," Natalie scoffed.
"I won't tell Will or Jay; I'll say you drove me back!" Becca's words came out rushed, almost pleading.
"Nothing bad will happen if you miss one of your lessons," Natalie responded, her tone firm.
"I never miss my lessons," Becca protested, tears now freely streaming down her cheeks as she fought to hold back her emotions.
"You see? One time won't hurt anybody. Stop with your tantrums, you are old enough for this." Natalie's words felt like accusations, making Becca feel even worse. She wasn't throwing a tantrum, she was trying desperately to hold on to something that meant everything to her.
"You don't understand. You're minimizing the facts! I need to go! I'm rehearsing a solo, and if I miss a rehearsal..." Becca's voice cracked as she tried to explain the gravity of the situation.
"Becca, please stop yelling!" Natalie's voice grew firmer, and the girl could sense the frustration building in her.
By this point, Becca couldn't avoid showing her anger. "I'm not yelling!"
"You are raising your voice, and you're scaring Owen! I'm sorry. I just can't pick you up."
"But—"
"I said 'no,' Becca. End of discussion!" Natalie's final words cut through the air, leaving Becca feeling defeated and alone.
The feeling of not belonging weighed on her like an unbearable burden, intensifying her sense of hopelessness to the point where it felt suffocating. The unsettling urges clawed at her emotions, making her feel even more isolated and desperate.
With a frustrated groan, she dashed to her room, overwhelmed by the urge to slam the door, but there was no lock on the room she was stayinging. She grabbed her phone and started searching for Hailey's contact, but was this really an emergency? Hailey had offered to be there whenever she needed to talk, but wasn't this too much to burden her with?
Her heart raced, and each breath felt labored. As panic took hold, she heard Natalie's footsteps getting closer, the sound of her voice on the phone speaking to Will adding to her anxiety. Becca sprinted to the bathroom in the hallway, desperation pushing her to lock herself inside. Natalie made a futile attempt to stop her, but she couldn't reach Becca in time, leaving her alone in the confined space with her tumultuous emotions.
She could hear the conversation happening in the hallway outside, “She just locked herself in the bathroom…I couldn’t stop her, what do you want me to do?”
Becca sat on the bathroom floor, her eyes scanning the objects around her, whispering to herself, "...there's a white sink, a small soap..." as she diligently practiced the calming techniques that Jay had taught her to combat the encroaching anxiety. Each item she named grounded her in the present, helping her regain control over her racing thoughts and emotions.
Some knocks on the door were distracting her, “Becca, hunny, please open up. What are you doing there?”
"...there's a green plant in a brown pot, and blue tiles: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5..." Becca continued, meticulously focusing on each detail around her. As she managed to block out the noise from outside, she picked up her phone with her shaky hands once more and composed a text: "I wish you were here." However, when she pressed the send button, the dreaded 'not delivered' message appeared once more, deepening her sense of isolation and despair.
After a few minutes, Becca's breathing gradually returned to normal, and she stood up, washing her face to clear her mind. She felt utterly drained and just wanted to crawl into bed and sleep until the next day. Yet, fear and shame held her back, a sense of embarrassment over her emotional outburst.
As she hesitated, lost in her conflicted thoughts, a familiar voice broke through the silence. Beyond the bathroom door, she could hear two distinct mutterings, piquing her curiosity and momentarily drawing her attention away from her inner turmoil.
"How long has she been there?"
"About half an hour, maybe?"
"Half an hour?" The new voice sounded furious. "And you just let her be all by herself in there!? Is she responding?"
"We took the dangerous objects out of this bathroom before she arrived. I can hear her moving around."
"Ugh, get off, I'm handling this!" The anger in the voice was palpable, and it seemed like someone was taking charge of the situation.
A soft knock on the door was accompanied by a gentle plea, filled with genuine concern.
"Becca, sweetie, would you please open the door for me?"

DON'T BLAME ME || 5 || Jay Halstead x Thea Rhodes

Chapter Synopsis: It's time for the Rhodes monthly family dinner, and time for Jay to get a deeper understanding of his wife's relationship with his in-laws.
Chapter Warnings: Mentions of arson, kidnapping, infanticide; allusion to childhood trauma, suicide, cancer-related death; brief description of a vehicular accident; outright familial/parental pressure; portrayal of misogyny and misandry; Elli's speech still fluctuates. Read ahead at your own risk.
Author's Note: I'm starting specific chapter synopsis and warnings because I think you guys get the gist now.
Thea
With my glasses on the bridge of my nose, I examined the recent resumes my store manager sent up during my shift, as Elli watched TV in the living room. I wasn't entirely sure what Jay was up to, but I didn't want to be in his business when I had my own to mind.
"Mama, are we seeing Ganpa tomorrow?" Elli called through the slightly-open office door.
I checked the calendar on the corner of my desk. "Yes, principessa."
"Is Mr. Jay coming?"
"He is a Rhodes now, Elle."
Jay knocked on the doorframe, catching my attention. "This is the first I'm hearing about seeing your father." He leaned his forearm on the doorway, as I fixed my glasses. "I also didn't know you wear glasses."
"I wear contacts to work, and usually just wear them after work. And we only go to dinner once a month—my sister's idea." I stamped the resume, intending to send it to the store manager so she can call for a interview with a James Smitt. "I usually don't remember about dinner until Elli asks."
I noticed him shift slightly, before I continued. "You don't have to come. I only go to keep the peace with Claire, otherwise I'd rather burn alive than step foot on the property."
"And I thought my relationship with my dad was rough." Jay sat down on the sofa facing my desk.
"Usually he tells me everything I'm doing wrong with my life and that's why Connor left and all that BS. I timed the honeymoon on the last dinner so I had an excuse not to go for a month.
"But Elli sees her aunt every second month, so I have to go. I don't trust my father to not give her the same list of insecurities he gave me." I scoffed, signing off on whatever I was meant to be reading. I'd get a call from the old man if it had to come bite me in the ass.
Jay nodded along with what I was saying. He agreed to come, as long as he didn't pull the usual BS and to properly meet Claire. From what I knew, he and his younger brother weren't close anymore, so I presumed he wanted a good relationship with his sister-in-law.
"Do I get to meet your brother eventually?" I asked, sitting back in my chair. I didn't care if I met his father so much, but if my brother kept ignoring my calls, I at least wanted some sort of communicating relationship with my brother-in-law.
He shrugged. "We can fly to New York to see him if you want. Will and I don't talk much anymore, but I will if you want to get to know him; I won't stop you from knowing him."
"If we have kids, he'll have to be in their lives. My father's an only child and I never met my mother's family, so the kids should have their dad's uncle around."
"I'll introduce you to Mouse sometime then." Jay explained that 'Mouse' was a nickname for his best friend from his Ranger days. He and Mouse were the only ones to get out of their last deployment, and while Jay virtually went straight at it for CPD, Mouse's path wasn't so straight cut.
I wanted to tell him to offer a room for him with us, but I needed to meet him first. Sure, he was Jay's best friend and near-brother, but Elli was a priority and I'd have to clear it with Kelly beforehand too.
"If it's okay with you, I'd want him to be an uncle to our kids too."
I agreed. "I have a couple best friends from middle school I'd want as their aunts, and then 51 would be aunts and uncles and grandfathers to them too, so I think it's fair."
Elli had a village, and any kid born to a 51 firefighter did too. That village was the exact thing that drove me into the career, and I couldn't be prouder of it.
We discussed the Rhodes family dinner in length, before Elli stormed in and begged to go to the nearby park with the puppy. Scout was a more recent addition to the family, left alone in a house with his late owner when patrol officers found him. Jay called during my shift, telling me about this Dalmatian puppy with the biggest and cutest eyes, that Elli adored and was asking to keep.
So I agreed. As long as he wasn't left stationary alone again. It helped that he was a hit at 51.
I dressed Elli into her coat as Jay readying Scout and we walked down to the park for the two babies to play and run around while we talked.
#
Jay
The Rhodes dinner was in an hour, and Thea was in the next room finishing up with Elizabeth's outfit. I hadn't even seen hers yet, but when she said to be dressed up, I assumed she meant with the clothes she'd left on my bed after her shopping spree with Gabby and Shay earlier in the day.
"Mommy said you look nice, Mr. Jay!" Elizabeth waved her hands up at me as she stopped running right before she crashed into me.
"Thank you," I laughed, as I looked from the toddler to her mother.
Thea was in a black turtleneck sweater, topped with a black belt holding up slick, slim-checkered dress pants. At least, that was what she'd called very similar ones a day before.
"You look beautiful."
Thea waved me off bashfully, "it's the Rhodes genes. We naturally pull off our own product line." She picked up Elizabeth in one arm, and her handbag in the other smoothly. Thea hooked her car keys onto her ring finger, which slid down to clink against her wedding ring. I didn't even notice she was wearing it.
You were too busy checking her out. One voice scolded me in my head.
She's your wife, you're legally obligated to. It argued with itself.
It didn't take us too long to arrive at what Thea failed to mention was an entire Rhodes Family Estate, and security was easy enough to get through, so by the time we were in the lobby of the mansion—could I call it that, or was it considered too small to be one to rich people?
"Miss Theodosia," one of the young maids curtsied as she and an older lady stopped at us. "And Mr. Halstead, and young Miss Elizabeth."
"Bridgette, it's Mrs. Theodosia." The older woman corrected sharply.
Bridgette curtsied quickly with an apology. "It's alright, Bridgette," Thea excused quickly, turning to the older maid. "It's fine, Margarethe."
"And Miss Elizabeth is greeted before Mr. Halstead-Rhodes. She is a Rhodes by blood, he isn't." Margarethe continued to scold Bridgette.
"Thea!" Claire didn't look much different to a month ago—granted, it was a month ago—but there was a genuine smile on her face as she hugged her sister. There was a five-year age gap between the sisters, and Thea kept her at arm's length, so they weren't as close as anyone outside close friends and family thought. "Nice to see you again, Jay."
I smiled. "You too, Claire. You look well."
"Oh please, I've done nothing different since the reception of your wedding, but thank you." She scooped Elizabeth into her arms, and headed into one of the rooms before the staircase. Thea nodded to follow, and I followed her instead as she talked with her sister. "It's nice seeing you again, Thea. Its been too long since I saw you; we really need to catch up between these dinners with Dad."
Thea sent me an exasperated glance already. "I've told you my schedule is busy, between the store and my actual job." They continued going back and forth about it as we sat at the dining table. Their father soon joined us.
Dinner was quiet, mostly Claire telling us what she was doing with her store and the plan for renovations in the next year. Mr. Rhodes kept looking at Thea, and she sent stares back at him before she would turn back to her sister.
After some silence, he spoke up. "So, Jason, what do your parents do?"
"My father's a construction manager."
"And your mother?" Mr. Rhodes asked before another mouthful. Thea sent him a quiet scold, probably a warning to lay off with the questions.
I didn't mind answering him so much, it was just the question. It was hard to talk about her, even so long after the fact. "We, uh, lost her a few years ago."
"Oh, I'm sorry—" "'We'? So you have siblings?" Mr. Rhodes cut Claire off.
"A brother."
He nodded, a smile on his face. "Well, I'm sure Theodosia is glad to have a new brother, since her current one doesn't bother to call her."
"Father."
"What? Claire told me you haven't heard anything from him since the wedding, I was only stating a fact." Thea rolled her eyes at his response, as he kept talking. "The least you could do let me say and ask what I want, considering you married a construction manager's son."
"A detective. An especially good one in his own right, too." She snapped, then her demeanour changed. "Or, what, you'd rather I married one of your friends who would likely hit your baby girl if she ever dared to say no?"
Claire and I made eye contact at the tension, before Mr. Rhodes spoke again. "All I'm saying is that you could have at least married a man with an inspiring lineage and strong genes. Though, being able to lift some tons of concrete or knocking suspects to the ground would take some strength."
"Oh my god," Thea laughed, rolling her eyes. "You would've been fine with one of your friends abusing me if it meant I'd have good-looking children. Of course I'm just breeding stock to you, that's all you saw Mom as."
The table fell silent, excluding the show Elizabeth was watching on an iPad beside Claire.
"I loved your mother just fine, Theodosia."
"Clearly not enough to keep it in your pants though, right?"
Damn. What did I marry into?
I thought about Will and I kicking my father into the next decade if he cheated on Mom. And she lived until I was 26, so I could've kicked his ass at any age. Thea would have been under ten years old.
"That's enough," Mr. Rhodes chided.
Thea stood, walking around the table to her daughter. She handed Claire the iPad and picked Elizabeth into her arms. "That's right, it is. We'll be leaving now." She looked down at her sister, "I'll see you next week."
I followed her out to the car, and she buckled Elizabeth into her car seat. She remained silent as she drove down the driveway, glancing occasionally at her daughter in the backseat. "I'm sorry you didn't see Auntie for very long, baby."
"It's okay, Mama."
Thea kept her eyes on the road after that, and I didn't want to press into her family matters any more than she would mine. Brooke already told me enough for me to know that it was a sore subject with her.
"51 is all the family I need." Thea told me after Elizabeth fell asleep and she closed the door to her room. "And you and Elli, of course."
"You don't need to explain anything," I excused. She didn't ask me about my issues with my old man, and I didn't tell her.
She smiled at me briefly. "For all the crap I gave you when we initially met, you're not too bad."
"You're not so bad yourself."
Thea patted my shoulder and disappeared into her room. I stayed on the sofa a little longer, catching up with Brooke about her own dad.
#
I sat in the passenger seat, as Thea got out of the car to pass Elizabeth to her great-grandfather. Even after his father cheated and his parents split, Kelly was still close with his dad's parents and Thea was too.
"It helps that I don't really know my mom's parents. I know they loved her, but that's it." Thea explained, as she drove to the firehouse. She'd leave for work, and I'd drive to the district, and I'd pick her up in the morning after her shift. "Kelly wants Elli to spend as much time with his grandmother as much as we can give them."
His and Brooke's grandmother had dementia, from what Brooke had told me, and it was getting worse. She wouldn't even remember her son eventually, since Benny was barely in Chicago anymore, and when he was, Brooke noted that he didn't see his parents as much as he didn't see her.
Thea shrugged when I told her that. "Benny thinks Kelly was affected more by the cheating and divorce than she was. Kelly thinks Brooke was more affected since she was in her early teens and really looked up to Benny before it all happened."
"What do you think?"
"I think that the Severides have a load of issues that we can't solve," she looked at me pointedly. "As much as we might want to help them because they're our friends, you can't help a Severide. Not unless you're more important to them than breathing. Elli could probably do it, but she's just a kid."
"She doesn't need to solve her family issues so young." Thea gave me a nod of agreement when I understood. I knew she and Kelly were trying to raise her the opposite they were—Kelly, the older son needing to protect everyone, and Thea, the youngest daughter needing to prove herself to be seen. They didn't want their daughter to feel like that, and Thea didn't want her little girl turning out like her.
"I think if she can help it, Teddy will make sure Elle doesn't become a firefighter. Too many health risks and the like."
I admired her determination to protect her daughter. Of course, I didn't understand at the time what it was like to want to protect something so vulnerable from the world you know could destroy them.

One and only
Thank you to the anon for this prompt! It was very fun to write. I know I set a word limit to these things but I'm finding that more often than not they tend to get away from me... I don't think y'all will mind too much though 😅
I know I haven't been uploading the prompt pics often, but I do promise to get to them all. The Challenge me daily is still open but I will be alternating writing that and another multi chapter fic I want to finish soon. (That is a sweet Upstead surprise that I am hoping will be ready for posting soon enough!)
Fandom: One Chicago ]
Pairing: Upstead
Words: 1849

“So, I heard something interesting today,” Hailey started casually. They were doing their thing after finally closing a long and trying case.
Jay looked over at her, “Oh yeah?” he asked casually sipping his beer. The tv was on but they weren’t really watching anything.
Hailey smirked and Jay raised his brows at her, intrigued. “What did you hear?”
“Adam mentioned that you were uhm … married?” Hailey said. Jay almost choked on his beer and Hailey grinned. “Just wondering when we’re gonna meet Mrs Halstead?”
Jay groaned and sat up just a little. He eyed her carefully before asking, “What else did he happen to mention?”
She raised her beer, taking a sip to hide her smile. “He said it was a Vegas wedding,” she mumbled. Jay flushed and Hailey felt a little guilty for teasing him about it. “Look, I’m not one to pry but … you just don’t seem like a Vega kinda guy.”
Jay ran a hand over his face trying to smother his blush and then he looked over at his partner. He didn’t particularly enjoy talking about his past. More specifically anything to do with his time as a ranger. But there was something about Hailey Upton that made him want to open up; to trust her. He took another sip of his beer, gearing himself up for the story.
“Her name was Abby McSweeney and it was honestly a drunken mistake.” He sighed not liking how that sounded. “We were at a funeral – a fellow ranger’s – and we got drunk. Really drunk and then …we got married. I signed the divorce papers shortly after that and a few years ago she showed up.” Hailey’s brows raised in surprise. Jay chuckled, having a good guess of what she might imagine was the reason. “She hadn’t signed them but I knew it would never work.”
“You didn’t love her?” Hailey surprised herself by asking that.
“No, I didn’t.” He answered. Jay looked at her and she smiled. It didn’t feel out of place talking to Hailey about this.
“So, you’re not married now?” she teased a moment later.
He laughed. “No, I am not. And next time I get married, it definitely won’t be a drunken Vegas mistake.”
“Next time?” Hailey asked and Jay shrugged. “You … you want to get married again?”
“I’d like to get married and have it mean something. But only if it’s with the right person,” he added taking a mighty sip of his beer.
Hailey grinned. “Jay Halstead, the closet romantic.”
He jokingly narrowed his eyes and then leaned back once more. “What about you?”
“What about me?”
“You don’t wanna get married, someday?”
“I don’t know,” she answered. Hailey hoped that was enough of an answer but Jay just looked over at her curiously. “Just don’t know if it’s for me,” she relented.
“Not something you can really know unless you try,” Jay said and then a moment later asked, “you never came close?”
Hailey bit her lip knowing Jay must have figured out there was definitely a story to this. She took a sip of her beer, hoping to stall her answer. She wanted to brush it off, but realized her partner had been exceptionally open and answered her questions. Because he trusted her. She could do the same.
“Just once,” she revealed. Hailey looked down at her hands and Jay carefully leaned in, somehow understanding the severity of what she was about to tell him. “His name was Garrett Thompson and he was my partner.”
She gave him a moment to take that in before she continued. “We were partnered for an undercover assignment. We posed as a couple and soon things got very real … and very serious.”
“You loved him,” Jay realised.
Hailey tried to shrug it off. The memory still to painful but Jay did not look convinced. “Yeah, I did,” she finally admitted.
“What happened?”
She smiled sorrowfully. “As all things do when you get personal on the job. It got messy and then …” she picked at the label of the beer bottle, gathering her courage, “he saved me from Booth – that was our target – and then uh… Booth had him killed.”
Jay shook his head slowly, “Hailey, I’m sorry.”
“Yeah, me too.” She finally looked up, meeting his eyes.
“You said you came close…?” Jay gently prompted.
“If he had asked, I would have said yes.” Hailey said it so matter-of-factly but Jay knew it was anything but. “I don’t think I’d want to go through that again, so I guess lesson learned. Loving someone in this line of work just doesn’t work, it’s too difficult.”
“Maybe,” Jay said and Hailey eyed him intently. “It doesn’t have to be. Not if you’re with the right person.”
“How do you know if it’s the right person?”
“I don’t know,” Jay admitted. “But I do know that loving someone shouldn’t be the hardest thing in your life.”
Hailey chuckled humourlessly. “I think a lot of people would disagree with you, Jay. There’s that whole ‘love is worth fighting for’ and ‘if it’s hard then it’s worth it’ nonsense.”
Jay laughed, and Hailey raised a brow at his cheek. “You misunderstand. I don’t mean that life isn’t hard. It is and things are going to be good and bad. But loving someone, enough to want to marry them, that should be the easiest thing you do every day.” He looked a little embarrassed but Hailey didn’t mock him. Not this time.
“You believe that?” She was truly curious and Jay took that as a good sign.
“Yeah, I do. I think it’s all about the right person.”
Hailey nodded, contemplating his words. They fell into a surprisingly easy silence. Jay was pretty sure the topic of past relationships was behind them when Hailey turned and asked with a rather serious expression, “I gotta know… did you have an Elvis impersonator?”
Jay laughed heartily and Hailey grinned.
***
Jay’s fingers absently played with Hailey’s hair. They were delightfully wrapped up in each other as they enjoyed a rare, slow morning. His hand wandered down until it found hers and he brought it up, smiling at the sight of the black band on her finger. He felt her smile against his neck and hum in delight as his fingers traced delicate patterns on her back.
“Where are you going?” he asked when she started moving away.
Hailey grinned. “Just gonna get some coffee. Want some?” he told her no and she leaned in, pressing a chaste kiss to his lips. “Be right back,” she whispered before slipping out from their bed.
She grabbed his discarded shirt off the floor as she went and Jay watched her with nothing short of pure adoration as she left the room. He heard her tinkering around in the kitchen and it was instinctive, the way in which he smiled.
He imagined what she might look like then, standing in their kitchen, dressed only in shirt. She’d have to stand on the very tips of her toes to reach the shelf with the mugs. He had told her to place them on a shelf she could reach but she had insisted.
Jay glanced over to his night stand where a candid shot of Jay and Hailey had been taken by Adam. They weren’t even looking at the camera, totally immersed in each other, jaw breaking grins as they laughed. It had been taken at a Bears game and Jay was pretty sure there were countless other photos of all their friends too. But this one, with just the two of them; this was his favourite.
Hailey came back into his sight then, a cup of coffee in each hand. Jay smiled, sitting up against the headboard a little better. He smirked when Hailey placed both cups down on his night stand.
“You didn’t have to,” he said softly.
“I know. But you’d just end up stealing half of mine, then complain cause its normal coffee like normal people drink it,” she teased.
Jay chuckled and then reached for her, gently tugging her towards him. Hailey came willingly, throwing one leg over his waist as she straddled him. she grinned down at him, her blonde hair a right mess thanks to him.
“Besides, I don’t want you to leave this bed again,” she whispered, leaning in, her lips ghosting over his.
He didn’t mind her teasing, but he had other things in mind. His fingers wove into her hair as he kissed her a second later. Hailey grinned, her hands falling to his shoulders.
“I like the sound of that,” he replied between kisses. “Such a smart idea, Mrs Halstead.”
Hailey giggled and it was a sound he loved to hear – because it was only for him. He fell back against the headboard and Hailey relaxed in his arms. He was looking at her, but she knew his mind was a mile away.
Her fingers brushed his jaw, gently until she caught his attention. “What is it?”
He shook his head, reluctant to say and that worried her. There were very few things they didn’t share with each other. The time for secrets had long passed them by.
“Jay,” she called and he looked up, meeting her beautiful blues.
“I was just thinking … I wished this had been the only time I said ‘I do,’ He admitted. Hailey could see the guilt in his eyes and she frowned. “I guess I wished this was my first and only marriage.”
She pressed a kiss to his lips. “It’s okay that it’s not,” she told him. “Life gets messy. It’s hard and we make mistakes. But there’s nothing wrong with that.”
“I know, but …” he shrugged.
“Hey,” she said softly. “I might not have been the first Mrs Halstead,” she laughed as he wrinkled his nose, “But I wouldn’t change a thing.”
“Really?”
“Of course. I love you, Jay.” She looked at him contemplating for a moment before she continued, “You were right all those years ago.”
“I’m usually right about a lot of things. To which are you referring to?” he sassed.
She swatted his arm. “It’s about the right person. And you dear husband are the only one for me.” He smiled, leaning up to kiss her gently. “Loving you is my favourite part of every day.”
He tucked a blonde curl behind her ear. “You really don’t mind?”
“Yes really. I don’t mind that I wasn’t your first,” she teased and he laughed. “I do intend to be your last.”
“You’re the only one that counts.” He told her. “You’re the one and only I want to call my wife. I love you, Hails.”
“Good! Now drink your questionable coffee before it gets cold,” Hailey laughed, handing him his coffee. Just as he liked, with almond milk.
“Yes ma’am.” He took the steeping cup of coffee from her and they settled into an easy embrace, sipping on their coffee and making idle talk.
It was not his first marriage, but it was the only one that mattered.

Stupid Game (A Halstead brothers + Halstead! sister imagine)
If you've read Someone I Used to Know by Patty Blount, you'll understand where I drew the inspiration from. Warning: includes sexual harassment and threats of sexual assault.
Fifteen days. Fifteen days left of this stupid and terrifying game. You could get through fifteen more days of their stupid game, after all, you were already halfway through. But, seeing as it was halfway done, they'd start to get more desperate. You needed something on you, anything. Pepperspray, mace, a knife, a razor blade--
"Y/N," you were snapped out of your thoughts by your brother, Jay, saying your name. "What are you doing up? I thought you had online first block today?" he asked as he poured himself a cup of coffee and grabbed a box of cereal from the cupboard.
"I do," you answered, stirring the peanut butter into your oatmeal once more. "Just wanted to get up and get some math homework done," you lied.
"You didn't do it last night?" Jay asked, raising an eyebrow at you as he sat down across from you.
"I know, I should've done it. But I was frustrated that I couldn't figure it out and figured maybe looking at it in the morning with fresh eyes would help."
"Fair enough."
"You're not mad I procrastinated?" That was one thing both he and Will agreed on when it came to you and school: procrastinating and not getting your assignments done was unacceptable. They said they didn't care about grades as long as you didn't fail-- and you weren't, you were getting all A's and B's-- but they did care about you trying your absolute best.
Jay shook his head. "No, sounds like you got it all figured out." He looked at his watch. "I gotta go. I'm gonna be late. See you when I get home."
Jay stood up and put his bowl and mug into the dishwasher. "Will you be home for dinner?" you asked...which was really code for if he was going to cook or if you were fending for yourself.
"I don't know. We don't have an ongoing case, so depends on today's case." You opened your mouth to ask if you could order takeout when he stopped you. "And, yes, you can get takeout. I just expect the receipt and change."
"I know, I know. Now, go save Chicago," you said, shooing him out the door.
"It's a team effort," he replied.
"Yeah, yeah. Say hi to Hailey for me."
"Will do!" he yelled to you over his shoulder.
You waited another five minutes until you knew that Jay wasn't coming back before starting your mission. You went into Jay's room and opened his closet. After peering at all the shelves, you had almost given up, when a piece of cardboard on the top shelf caught your eye.
"Gonna need a chair for this," you mumbled and then made your way back into the kitchen and dragged a chair into Jay's room.
After moving a few things, you pulled the box down and set it on the floor. "What are you hiding in here, Jay?" you asked yourself, having never seen this box. You knew it was Jay's though because J. Halstead was written on the side in black permanent marker.
Slowly, you opened the box, as if scared something was going to jump out at you or Jay was miraculously going to appear and tell you not to open it. But, neither of those two things happened.
"Holy shit," you muttered as you opened the box. You thought this stuff was stored away in a storage locker, but it was here all along.
Inside the box was Jay's military uniform, all folded up, along with his dog tags and a few pictures from his time overseas. You felt like you were looking at one of Jay's most intimate secrets, just by looking at this stuff. You wondered who in those pictures came home and who didn't. There was also a small leather journal, and tied to the side of it was a knife.
You picked up the journal and untied the knife from it. You'd be lying if you said that opening the journal and reading it hadn't crossed your mind. But, you viewed your brother as a war hero, and if there was anything in there that would change that view, you didn't want to know. You also knew he had seen some horrific things over there, not that he had ever given you any specific details on the missions, you just knew because of how hard some cases hit him, especially kid cases.
So, you placed everything back into the box just like you found it and put it back on the shelf. Except for the knife, that you kept.
It felt heavy in your hands. The red handle was faded, probably from all the sand that had rubbed against it overseas. You ran a finger over the blade, a little dull from not being sharpened in all these years.
You jumped as your phone alarm went off, alerting you that you had half an hour before you had to leave. You turned it off and placed the knife in your pocket. Then, you dragged the chair back to the kitchen and continued to get ready for school, the extra protection you now had would make you feel more protected for these next fifteen days, that you were sure of.
With the knife safely placed in your backpack half an hour later, you headed off to school.
***
Jay furrowed his eyebrows as he looked at his phone. Your school was calling him, which was odd. The only reason he thought that they'd be calling was that you didn't show up, you weren't a troublemaker like he was when he was in high school. The stakes were higher now, so you couldn't afford to mess up.
"Sarge, I gotta take this. It's Y/N's school," he said and then proceeded to walk to an interrogation room for some privacy in case the call was serious.
"Jay Halstead," Jay said as he answered.
"Mr. Halstead this is Ben White, principal of Central Chicago High School. I have Y/N in my office right now and I would appreciate it if you could come down here."
"Is she in trouble?" Jay asked, knowing if it were anything other than that, he would have told him.
There was a pause on the other end of the line as the principal tried to figure out what to say. "Somewhat. I'll explain more in person."
"Okay, thank you. I'll be there in twenty minutes."
He hung up the phone and exited the interrogation room and went back into the bullpen to grab his keys and coat.
"Everything okay?" Voight asked.
"Not really. Y/N got in trouble at school, so I gotta go talk to her principal."
"What'd she do?" Kevin asked.
"Don't know yet, said he'll explain when I get there."
"Just don't be too hard on her. She's a good kid, Jay."
"I know, which is why I'm shocked that she's in trouble at all."
Hailey placed a hand on his shoulder. "Just call me if you need anything, okay?"
"Okay."
***
When Jay walked into the principal's office, it was just like he remembered it from when he was in trouble in high school. Most of his were for a few fistfights at lunch or just not doing his homework. Hell, when he looked at you, you were in the same position he was always in whenever your guys' mom or dad had to come to pick him up: hands in your lap, head down, and eyes trained on the floor like it was the most interesting thing in the world.
"Mr. Halstead, take a seat," Mr. White motioned for him to sit in the other empty seat facing his desk.
"Please, call me Jay. Mr. Halstead's my father. Now, what's this about?" he asked, looking between you and the principal to see which one of you would be the one to tell him.
"Well, as you know we have a very strict no-weapons policy at the school. And, well, your sister, this fell out of her locker."
At this, you looked up, wanting to gauge Jay's reaction. Something flashed across his eyes for a moment, and then anger took over a few seconds later. "A knife? Really? And my Ranger's knife at that?"
"I'm sorry," you mumbled. But, you couldn't tell him what was going on. After all, it's not like the school would do anything about it, which wasn't for lack of trying because oh people had tried alright.
Jay took a deep breath, not wanting to blow up at you in front of anyone. "Why do you even have it?"
When you didn't answer him, he turned to your principal. "She said that she was snooping through your stuff, and she found the knife, thought it was cool, and wanted to show it to her friends."
Now, snooping, Jay could see. But showing a knife to your friends? Even having a remote interest in any type of weapon? Well, that just wasn't you and you both knew that. But, he knew you wouldn't tell him the real reason unless you were alone, even then it was a long shot.
"I see," Jay nodded. "Let's not beat around the bush here. What kind of trouble is she in?"
"Well, typically we have to call the cops on this type of stuff, but I figured since you were a cop, that this would do. Typically, there's also a three to five day suspension that comes with these things, but seeing everything she's gone through in the past years and that she has outstanding grades and never has even had a detention, I'm going to let her off with a warning. She just has to go home for the rest of the day," Mr. White answered.
"And this won't be on her record?" Jay asked.
"This won't be on her record," Mr. White confirmed.
"What do you say, Y/N?" Jay asked.
"I'm sorry," you apologized, looking up once again.
"And?"
"And it won't happen again." Jay cleared his throat, telling you that you forgot something. "Sir," you added quickly.
It was always something your dad had taught Jay and Will when they got in trouble, that they had to use either sir or ma'am in the apology. Up until today, you never had to use it, but here you were. There's a first time for everything.
"I'm sure it won't," Mr. White said.
"I'm gonna go get my stuff," you said to Jay before leaving the principal's office.
Jay rubbed a hand down his face and sighed. Then, he turned back to Ben White. "I'm really sorry about this. I don't know why she'd do anything like this. This isn't like her--"
"Jay, she's been through a lot," he sympathized. "She's probably just acting out. Every teenager goes through that. We both know you did."
Mr. White was a young teacher back when Jay and Will were in high school, and he got to see some of Jay's fights first hand. He even had to rip him off a kid once in the cafeteria.
"Hey, they were always for good reasons...And, I always won."
"Now that you're not a student anymore, I can agree with that statement." He heard the door to the main office open. "Just, don't be too hard on her, okay?"
Jay nodded and stood up and left the office. Now he had to deal with his sister and try to figure out what was actually the real cause of this.
***
You started to run up the stairs but were stopped quickly by Jay's stern voice. "No, come back down here. We're going to talk about this."
You sighed, knowing you were going to be in deep shit from him since you got nothing from the school. You handed him your phone, but surprisingly, he handed it back to you.
"I get to keep my phone?"
"You do, but that's only because I'm letting you drive to and from school and that's it. You go to school and you come straight home. No stopping for coffee, donuts, fries, nothing. I need you to have your phone on you in case you get in an accident." You nodded, knowing his logic was sound.
"How long?"
"Three weeks."
"Jay! But homecoming's in two and a half! And I'm going dress shopping with Emma this weekend!"
"Should've thought of that before you brought a knife to school, my military knife at that. Why were you looking through my stuff anyway?"
"Just curious, I guess." It was a lie and you both knew it.
"That's not the truth. What's going on? Come on, you know you can tell me."
Not this I can't. But, you didn't say that. "That is the truth, Jay. Now, how am I going to get my homecoming dress?"
"You don't need a dress if you're not going to the dance."
"You can't keep this from me--"
"Yes, yes I can. If it was detention for tardies or a failed test or hell, even a fight, this wouldn't be happening. But you brought a knife to school. Not only is that against school rules, but it's against the law. What you did was illegal, Y/N."
"I know and I'm sorry."
"Sorry doesn't cut it this time, not with this. But, if you want to get a dress and go to the dance, maybe doing some extra chores can get you that."
"So, I don't have to tell Emma I can't come this weekend?" you asked, hopefully.
"Not what I said. You still can't go with Emma. If you earn back that privilege, Hailey can take you."
"But, Jay--"
"No buts. I put the offer on the table and I can just as easily take it off."
"Uh, fine."
"Now, I know you have classwork from the classes you missed today, so get to it. And, don't think I won't be telling Will about this."
***
You jolted awake from your sleep. Must've just been a nightmare, you thought. A really loud nightmare.
"You bastard!" you heard Jay yell.
Okay, so not a nightmare.
"Get away from him!"
Him? Who else was in the house besides you and Jay?
If it was serious, you knew Jay would have come to wake you up to get you out of the house or yelled your name by now. Slowly, you stood up and grabbed your phone. Then, you exited your room and walked across the hall to Jay's.
You heard more yelling and tossing and turning as you stood outside his door. After taking a deep breath, you slowly turned the knob and walked into his room.
When you saw the way Jay looked, you instantly knew what this was. "Let him go and no one gets hurt!" he yelled at the top of his lungs.
Jay turned towards you as if he had heard a noise in his nightmare which caused him to abruptly turn. His eyes were moving rapidly beneath his eyelids and his face was dripping sweat.
Luckily, he started to calm down. His breathing started to slow and he hadn't yelled for over a minute.
"Jay," you whispered, taking a step closer to him. "Jay. Jay Halstead," you repeated, this time a little louder.
Nothing. You took a risk and touched his shoulder. "Bastard!" he yelled, throwing a punch which caused you to jump back, his fist narrowly missing your face.
Now it was his as well as your breathing that was coming out jagged.
You couldn't wake him up. You couldn't risk touching him again.
Jay yelled out again, causing you to jump and run out of his room.
You pulled out your phone and dialed the familiar number, hoping that he hadn't gotten called into work.
"Hmmm, hello?" your oldest brother's voice came through your phone, thick with sleep.
"Will, I need you. Please come over."
"Y/N? What's wrong?" He immediately sat up in bed upon hearing the worry in your voice.
"Jay's he's having a nightmare and I can't wake him up and--"
Yelling could be heard in the background and Will cut you off. "Is that him?"
"Yeah." The next part, you said quieter. You knew it wasn't Jay's fault this was happening, but it didn't make your feelings any less valid. "Will, I'm scared."
You heard a door close on Will's end. "It's okay. I don't think he's ever sleep-walked from a nightmare. Just, whatever you do, do not touch him. Understand?"
"Yes." More screaming. "Please, just hurry."
You don't know how you got through those fifteen minutes without completely breaking down. And, in those fifteen minutes, it had gone from yelling to hearing a few things slam to the ground. You assumed it was just things on Jay's bedside table, like his alarm clock, water bottle, and phone that had fallen from him trying to throw punches every which way, but you were too scared to check. What if he was up and standing and could throw things at you? You couldn't do that.
The sight Will saw when he unlocked the door and walked into the house completely broke his heart. You were sitting on the couch, wrapped in a blanket with your feet tucked under you, and silent tears were streaming down your face. If Will hadn't known any better, he would have thought you were making yourself as small as possible as if to disappear.
Will knelt down in front of you so that he was at eye level with you. "Hey, has it gotten worse?" You didn't look at him and that was all the confirmation Will needed.
You let out a deep shaky sob, finally feeling like it was safe for you to make noise again. Will took that opportunity to envelop you in a hug. "It's okay. It's okay. He can't hurt you. It's not him that's doing this. He doesn't know he's home."
"I know he thinks he's in Afghanistan, but he, Will, he almost, if I didn't..." you trailed off, not knowing how to tell your brother that Jay had almost hit you.
"What did he almost do, Y/N? You know he'll want all the details when he wakes up, so just tell me. I promise I won't be mad at him."
You took a deep breath. "He almost hit me, Will. I touched his shoulder and he just swung and--"
"Did I or did I not tell you not to touch him?"
"This was before I called you."
There was another crash and you whimpered. Will gave you one last squeeze and stood up. "Whatever you do, do not follow me, Y/N. I don't want you to see this."
You nodded and tugged your blanket tighter around you as if that was even possible.
The ice was melting in Will's hands as he walked towards Jay's bedroom. He could hear yelling, well, they were more like loud sobs at this point. The floor next to his bed was covered in things that fell from his bedside table: his alarm clock, water bottle, phone, the lamp...which luckily hadn't been on and the bulb hadn't broken.
"Now or never," Will muttered to himself as he stepped towards his younger brother. Then, he flung the ice out in front of him, causing it to land on Jay, and jumped back as fast as possible.
"You bastard! Fuck!" Jay's eyes shot open, drinking in his surroundings.
"Jay," Will said, quietly alerting his brother of his presence before placing his hand on his shoulder. "You're home, in Chicago, you're safe." Noticing that Jay's breathing hadn't yet slowed, Will overexaggerated his inhales and exhales. "Breathe with me. In...Out...In...Out...Good..." And so they continued that until Jay no longer needed Will to guide him through his breathing.
"What happened?" he asked, looking to where his things were strewn on the floor.
"Y/N called me. You were screaming and she tried to wake you up, but couldn't."
Jay's eyes widened. "Oh, God. I didn't...Please tell me I didn't hurt her, Will."
"No, but you did come close. She said she touched your shoulder and you just swung. She jumped out the way, though."
"Oh, God. I almost hit her, Will. Fuck. I'm a horrible brother."
Will sat done next to his brother, despite his sheets being all sweaty. "You are not a horrible brother, far from it. She knows it wasn't you that was doing this. Your mind was somewhere else. Now, do you wanna tell me what happened?"
"It was, it was all because of that damn knife. I don't know why I even kept it in the first place, Will."
"You kept telling someone to let go of him and called someone a bastard. Who?"
"I- There was this kid. His dad was gonna kill him and put a gun to his head. I tried, but I couldn't, I couldn't..." Jay let out a strangled sob and wiped the tears that ran down his face.
Will started to run a hand up and down his back, something he learned long ago that soothed Jay after nights like these. "And the knife?"
"I used that to kill the boy's father. I should have just gotten rid of it when I had the chance."
"Jay, I'm sorry all of this got dug up."
"Yeah, me too. I'm not proud of the man I was back then. I thought I was over this."
"It's okay to fall apart sometimes."
Jay nodded, even though he hated when it happened because the bigger they are, the harder they fall. He bottles up all his emotions that when he finally falls apart, he explodes.
"I think Y/N would want to know you're okay," Will suggested.
You were still in the same position you had been in when Will left you when you heard footsteps approaching you and looked up. Jay's eyes were bloodshot and it was clear as day that he had been crying. You felt the couch dip as Jay sat next to you.
"I'm sorry," Jay said. Slowly, as if not to scare you, he wrapped an arm around your blanket-covered body.
"You scared me," you whispered.
"I know. Will told me. I'm so sorry." He scanned your face, making sure that Will wasn't lying to him when he had told him that he hadn't hit you. "I just need you to know that what you saw, that wasn't me, Y/N. It was my mind bringing me back to a very dark place. I would never, ever, ever knowingly scream at you like that or lay a hand on you."
"I know. You didn't even yell that bad with everything that happened at school today. But, it's all my fault."
"Y/N, look at me." You looked up, your eyes red-rimmed from all the crying. "None of this is your fault. Yes, seeing that knife triggered me. But, I could've just as easily seen it if the box fell over and the knife fell out."
You knew what he was getting at. He was trying to assure you that you and the knife were not what triggered him. It was the knife and the knife only.
"Can Will spend the night?" you asked, knowing that if it happened again, you wouldn't be alone when dealing with it.
"Of course. Now, go back to bed. You've got school tomorrow."
You nodded and stood up, knowing he was right. It was currently 3:30 in the morning and you had been up for an hour and a half and you needed to be awake by 6:00. And, you knew that you needed your focus to be razor sharp at school now that you didn't have any protection.
"Goodnight. I love you guys."
***
The weekend had come and gone and now it was Monday. As much as you hated Mondays, the ones before homecoming were becoming increasingly worse. Everything was fine until you had walked out of school, keys in hand.
"What the fuck?" you yelled as you were slammed into the side of your car, your cheek hitting the window hard.
Then, you felt a hand squeeze your butt. "Fifty points," he whispered in your ear.
Tears sprung to your eyes as you felt his hand reach for your keys. "Get the fuck away from her, Evans!"
Then, you felt him being ripped off of you, by none other than Jordan Atwater.
"Whatever," Derek Evans grumbled as he shrugged Jordan's hands off him. "I got fifty points and she just went from 200 to 250 for the rest of it." Then, he walked away and Jordan was quickly at your side.
"Are you okay?"
"No," you sniffled.
"Here, let me take you home, and then we can tell Kevin and Jay and they can come get your car."
"No! They can't know about this Jordan and you know that!"
"Y/N, he just did that forcibly and they just increased the point value for..." he trailed off, not wanting to say the disgusting words.
"Jordan, I'm fine. I can handle this."
"Fucking hell, Y/N. Do you know what I heard rumors about in the locker room?" You shook your head, not wanting to know at all, but knowing Jordan would tell you anyway. "He was planning on taking your keys so that you'd have to go with him. Some other guys were planning on following you home tomorrow."
"I can't- I don't know what to do, Jordan. It used to just be a stupid game, but now it's this and- fuck."
"I know, I know. Listen, how about I check on you after practice to make sure no one comes over?"
"Jay grounded me. I'll just get in more trouble if you come over."
"What'd you do?"
"Just something stupid," you answered. You knew that if you told him about the knife, he would most definitely tell Kevin.
He raised an eyebrow at you, but let your lie slide. "You're telling Jay tonight or so help me God, I am telling Kevin tomorrow before school."
"Can I just come over to your house?" you muttered.
Somehow, he heard you. "I thought you said Jay would be mad at you?"
"Then we can tell Kev and if Kev knows first, he can tell Jay because I don't want to be the one to tell him. He'll freak."
"Yeah. Tell you what? I'll pick you up at your house right after practice and then we can go to mine."
"Thanks for having my back, Jordan."
"Hey, that's what friends are for."
***
Jordan sucked in a breath as his phone dinged, alerting him that someone else had posted something on that stupid leaderboard for that stupid game.
"Aren't you gonna get that?" you asked as you sat next to him on the couch, assuming it was a text message notification.
"It's, uh, it's not important."
"If it's a text it's probably important."
Before Jordan even had time to react, you snatched the phone from the table in front of him. But, you quickly regretted your decision as your face paled and tears sprang to your eyes.
"Are they- are they all saying these things about me?" you asked, barely above a whisper as you handed Jordan his phone.
His eyes quickly skimmed the comment on the leaderboard in front of him and he sighed. "I mean, they've said some pretty horrible things, but this is up there with the most disgusting."
"What's most disgusting?" Kevin asked as he walked inside to see you two sitting on the couch, Jordan trying to keep his phone away from you despite you having already seen the comment. "Wait, aren't you grounded, Y/N?"
"Does Jay tell all my business to Intelligence?" you grumbled.
Kevin shrugged as he hung up his jacket. "Pretty much. But really, wat'cha doing here?"
You and Jordan shared a look that didn't go unnoticed by Kevin. "What's going on?"
***
"So you wanted to talk to me first so that I could help you break the news to Jay?" Kevin asked.
"Yeah," you mumbled, shocked by you hadn't broken down yet. It was probably just because you were scared to tell Jay, scared of how he would react to people who were doing this, and scared of how he would react to you not having told him until now.
"Let me call him. I think he still had to finish up some paperwork, so maybe he hasn't noticed that you're gone yet."
Kevin walked away to go talk to Jay in private and Jordan went to the kitchen to grab you both some water. Absentmindedly, you ran your fingers over your cheek, not doubting that there would be a bruise there tomorrow due to how hard Derek shoved you up against your car.
"Need some ice?" Kevin asked, having reentered.
"I'm fine," you quickly said, knowing that Jay and Will would be babying you about your face anyway.
"If you say so."
Jordan returned with the water and slid one to you. "Jay mad?" he asked his older brother.
"I mean, I told him Y/N was over here and that she has something to tell him and to not get mad at her."
"Great, that helps a lot," you replied sarcastically.
"I also told him we might have a case."
"Okay, so he knows it's bad then. I just don't wanna blow this out of proportion--"
"Girl, blow this outta proportion?" Jordan interrupted. "They're planning on assaulting you! I think you can blow this up however much you want!"
"I just don't wanna be the one to start this conversation," you admitted.
"We gotchu, girl, we gotchu," Kevin reassured you.
***
"You better have a good reason why you left the house-- without telling me I might add-- when you're grounded!" That was the first thing Jay yelled as Kevin let him into the house.
"Whoa, calm down, man. She's got a good reason to be here--"
"A good reason? A good reason being that she wanted to hang out with Jordan when I clearly stated that she was to come straight home after school!"
Roughly, he pulled a chair out from under the table to sit down across from you. You stayed staring at the wood of the table, not wanting to look him in the eye. "You have a good reason, Y/N?" he asked smugly. "Then look me in the eye and tell me that reason."
Jordan squeezed your shoulder in reassurance, which gave you the bit of confidence you needed to look your brother in the eyes. "I- there's these points and I was pushed and..." you ran your hands down your face in frustration, trying to stop your tears. "I can't do this."
"Is that a bruise forming on your cheek?" Jay asked as you removed your hands from your face, his eyes immediately softening. You nodded. "Care to elaborate?"
"A football player shoved me up against my car and then he- and then he grabbed my ass."
"Does this football player have a name?" he asked, looking to Jordan because he was on the football team.
"He does, but there's more and I'm gonna tell you that first because I don't think Y/N wants to."
"Thank you," you whispered to Jordan.
"So it's more than just a stupid kid playing grab-ass with my sister?" Jay asked, anger starting to seep out once more.
"There's point values attached to each grab," Jordan started. "Grab a girl, it's usually 50 points. Do some other things with her, there's more depending on what it is. Freshmen are strictly off-limits, so it's Y/N's first year dealing with it."
"How long has it been going on?"
"I think the game started totally five years ago. It happens for a month leading up to homecoming. Anyone on the varsity football team pays $10 to play, and whoever has the most points at the end of the month gets the money.
"And this year, they started a leaderboard online, where you can vote on doing different things. If it gets enough votes, it's up for grabs for points. And well, just take a look."
Jordan slid his open phone to Jay and he scrolled through the website, complete with a leaderboard. He looked at the most recent comments and scrolled to the beginning of the thread.
200 points if you can get the cop's sister to give you oral
Jay swallowed a lump in his throat as he read the title and continued to scroll.
100 for the actual act and another 100 if you get it on video
Deal
Deal
Definitely
Just don't get caught
She's small so it shouldn't be that hard
Think she had a crush on me last year, so this should be a piece of cake. Pay up boys
You're on, Evans
Then, he got to the comments after today's events had occurred.
Grabbed Halstead's ass in the parking lot and was so close to getting her keys, but Atwater stopped me. Buzzkill. It's gettin' close to hoco, so points for her are now up to 250
Eh, I'll just follow her home tomorrow and then get her before her brother gets home
Her lips will probably feel so good wrapped around me
Jay let out a shaky breath as he got to the end of the thread. "You're right, Kev. I think we might have a case on our hands. You wanna go home, Y/N?"
"I'm scared," you said as you looked up at your brother, tears streaming down your face. "What if they come to the house, Jay?"
"Y/N, I promise you that I will never, ever allow that to happen."
***
You were in the shower, but you could still make out the faint sound of Jay's voice. You didn't know who he was talking to, but you assumed it was either Will, Voight, or Hailey.
All the events of the past two weeks came down on you, crushing you like a ton of bricks. You knew this game was going to happen, but what you didn't know was that they going to do that 200, well now 250 points for you. At least, you hadn't known until Jordan told you and begged you to tell someone.
Since the start of this sick, twisted game, you made sure to wear something that always covered your butt, such as a long sweater or hoodie paired with jeans or leggings. But apparently, that didn't stop money-hungry and hormonal teenage boys.
The first time it happened, it was just a quick pinch when you were standing at your locker, nothing too alarming. Hell, you hadn't even known who it was. But then, once the 200 points were on the line, they started getting more and more aggressive, cornering you after lunch or after class, blocking you from exiting the locker bank.
You had heard the whispers of what Derek Evans planned to do, so you took matters into your own hands, hence stealing Jay's knife from the Rangers. People always said to go to the school, that they'd stop if enough people told. But, they never stopped. Girls had tried and tried last year, and nothing happened. Hell, you were so close to talking to the principal but were cornered right before walking into the main office, so you gave up. You figured you could just put up with it until it was over, despite how much anxiety simply going to school was now giving you.
You stepped out of the shower, dried off, and changed into your pajamas. Then, you glanced at yourself in the mirror: puffy and red eyes and cracked lips stared back at you. You hadn't even felt human since this thing started. You felt like a fucking object.
A fucking arcade game that told them that if they tried hard enough they'd win a damn prize.
The gut-wrenching sob that left your lips stopped Jay on his way to the kitchen. Jay made his way to the bathroom and knocked on the door, your sobs still ever-present.
"Y/N, can I come in? Please?" He asked quietly, using the voice he used when he had to talk to children on the job.
"I just wanna be a-alone right now J-Jay," you hiccupped.
Jay sighed and ran a hand through his hair. "You know I can't let you do that. It's not healthy." He didn't get a response, so he just stood outside the bathroom, hoping you'd exit sooner rather than later.
Unfortunately, that didn't happen. And your breathing just got shallower and shallower. "Are you dressed?" he asked.
It took you a moment, but somehow you managed to tell him that you were.
Your vision was starting to go blurry and your feet and fingers were starting to go numb. The sides of your head were pounding so much that you thought it was going to explode.
Jay took a paperclip and unfolded it, then pressed it into the knob until a click was heard. The door was heavier than he had expected, alerting him that you were slumped against it. You felt yourself being pushed forward, but at this point, you didn't even care since you were too focused on not passing out. But, if you did pass out you figured, at least your mind wouldn't wander to all the recent events.
"Y/N, Y/N, open those eyes for me, okay? Just look at me. Focus on me," Jay urged you after he had squeezed himself through the door and was now crouching down in front of you.
"C-Can't-- Open eyes-- hurts," you said through shallow and fast breaths.
"Okay. I'm gonna squeeze your hand. Just focus on the touch and try and follow my breathing."
"What-- if I-- pass-- out?"
"I won't let that happen. Now in, out, in, out. Good. Now I'm gonna add a second. In, out, in, out..."
You continued to focus on Jay's voice as you slowly but surely started to regain feeling in your feet and fingers.
"Can you open your eyes for me?" Jay asked, once your breathing had returned to a semi-normal state for a few cycles. Slowly, you opened your eyes but quickly closed them. "Head still hurt?"
"Yeah."
"That'll happen when not enough oxygen gets to the brain. You can even ask Will to fact check me." You heard the doorbell ring. "Speaking of Will..."
"You didn't."
"But I did. He brought food, too."
"Jay? Y/N? You here?" you heard Will yell from down the hallway after he entered the house.
"Bathroom!" Jay replied, causing you to wince due to how close he was to your ear. "Sorry."
"What the hell happened?" Will asked as he rushed to crouch down in front of you, going into doctor mode when he saw your eyes were clenched shut. There was a pause as Jay mouthed panic attack to his older brother. "Okay, well I'm gonna go get you some water, hopefully that'll make your head stop hurting and then I'll check out that cheek of yours."
"Do you have to?" you whined.
"Kid, one day you'll thank me for this."
"I doubt it," you mumbled.
Will came back with a glass of water and slid it into your hand, making sure that your hand was firmly wrapped around it before letting go. After waiting about a minute after you'd finished the water, you opened your eyes.
"Better?" Will asked.
"Better," you confirmed. "Thanks."
"That's what big brothers are for."
"So that means you don't have to go all doctor on me?"
"Ha, that was funny. Now, sit on the counter so I can take a look."
You pushed yourself off the floor and then onto the counter, Jay standing up after you to stand next to Will. Great, now you had two worried older brothers both looking at the same thing. At least they weren't both doctors.
"Damn, it's already bruising," Jay said as he looked on.
Will hand gently touched your cheek. "Tell me if anywhere hurts." He touched from your jaw up to your cheek bone, but the only place you told him that hurt was between the two and a bit at the bottom of your cheek bone.
"You're lucky," Will started, "You hit it just a bit higher I might have to take you in for x-rays to make sure you didn't bruise or fracture your cheek bone."
"No hospital?" you asked hopefully.
"No hospital," Will confirmed. "Just lots of ice."
"Come on, let's go get that food Will brought before it gets too cold...and the beer for me and him gets warm."
***
You walked into Intelligence with Jay the next morning, trying to think of anything but the worried looks you were getting. "It's okay to be scared," Jay told you, giving your shoulder a squeeze. "And, I'll be there the whole time."
"Do you have to?" you asked him.
"Because you're a minor and I'm your legal guardian, they can't talk to you unless I'm there. So, yes, I have to be with you."
"Hailey," Voight's raspy voice carried through the bullpen. "You go talk to Y/N. Ruzek, go talk to Jordan."
"Jordan's here?" you asked, looking up at Jay.
"Yeah. Kevin wanted him to give a statement, too. Said he can attest to all the stuff that was said in the locker room."
"Oh." You didn't want to think about the things that were said. If you thought what they were posting was bad, what they talked about in the locker room you knew would be ten times worse.
You followed Hailey into the breakroom. Despite being here dozens of times before, it felt odd to you this time, eerie, as it was waiting to gobble up your deepest and darkest secrets and fears and share them with the world.
Hailey sat across from you and Jay sat next to you. "Jay, I need you to read this over and sign it since Y/N's a minor." She slid two pieces of paper over to him and he glanced at them and quickly scribbled his signature.
Hailey gave him a look that said you're not gonna read it? "I've told parents what this says before. I know the drill." Hailey nodded and took the papers from him.
"Start from the beginning, Y/N. What happened with Derek Evans?" Hailey prompted.
"I have a question." Here goes nothing. Hailey nodded at you to continue while Jay furrowed his eyebrows. He had been over how this was going to work with you before you even stepped out of the house this morning to try and ease your nerves. "Does it matter?"
"Does what matter? What he did to you? Of course, it does," Hailey answered.
"No, sorry. That came out wrong. "Does it matter that I had a crush on him last year...and kinda into this year." The crush only lasted two months into this school year though, when you found out he had cheated on his current girlfriend. But last year, oh last year your crush was in full swing and you took every opportunity you could to talk to the then junior, and there was no fooling anyone in that school that you had been head over heels for him.
"I'm sorry. I'm not following," Hailey apologized.
"Since I had a crush on him and he knew it, couldn't he take that as I wanted this?"
"No. It's only consent if both parties agreed to it."
"But maybe me having a crush on him would make him think that."
Now, it was Jay's turn to speak. "Did you take health class yet?"
"No, I take it next semester. Why?"
"The teacher will talk about consent there, but I guess we're doing it now." He looked at Hailey to make sure this was okay and she nodded at him to continue. "What do you think has to happen for someone to not consent?"
"One of them has to say no or stop."
"Is that the only way to be sure?"
"I mean, I guess."
"See, that's where you're wrong. It's not consent if you slap his hand away. It's not consent if you're too drunk to say yes. Same for drugs. It's not consent if you're coerced into it. And, consent can be revoked at any time. Any time. To keep it simple for you to remember right now, it's only consent if you and him both said yes to this. And, I know you didn't say yes to what happened to you and what they were threatening to do to you."
"So, even though I didn't say stop or no right away when he pushed me up against my car and grabbed me, I still wasn't consenting?" you asked.
"No," Hailey answered. "Did he ask to grab your butt?"
"No."
"Therefore, there was no consent involved."
There was a knock on the door and Hailey got up to answer it. "Halstead, a word," Voight ordered, motioning for him to follow.
Jay glanced at you. "Hey, don't worry, kid. Everything will work out one way or another."
Jay followed Voight into his office and closed the door. "What's up, Sarge?"
"The kid who grabbed your sister, well he's 18, Jay. Just turned 18 last month."
"So, we can press more charges?"
"That's what I wanted to talk to you about. Since all we have are threats and Y/N's and Jordan's word against his, most we can do is forcible touching. If he had acted on the threat, then that'd be a different story."
"So, you're saying that she had to be forced to have oral sex with this ass to press more charges? The threats aren't enough? Even though we clearly have proof of the threats from that goddamn leaderboard."
"I know it's not ideal--"
Jay threw his hands up. "Ideal? It's ridiculous!"
Voight was about to say something, but was stopped by a knock on his office door. "Yeah?" he asked.
"Boss, we got a problem," Ruzek said as he entered.
"What type of problem?"
"The Evans kid? Yeah, well his dad's the president of the school board."
"You're kidding."
"Wish I was, Boss."
"Jay, go see if Y/N knew about this. The rest of us are gonna figure out how to proceed with this new information."
Jay was about to enter the breakroom, when his phone buzzed. It was Will.
Any news? the text read.
Other than the fact that the Evans kid's dad is the president of the school board and we only have enough to get him on forcible touching, no nothing new.
Jay didn't even think about the fact that he was sharing information about an open investigation. To him, this was just him talking to his brother about the case that involved his sister.
Jay held down the power button to turn his phone off and then walked back into the breakroom. "Anything?" Hailey asked.
"Uh, yeah. But let's finish interviewing Y/N first. I know we had to stop since I left."
Jay sat back down next to you and Hailey started questioning you once again.
"Did you know that this game was going to happen?" Hailey asked.
"Yeah, that's why I started wearing long sweaters and hoodies, to try and cover up my butt."
"Okay, and when it start to turn into more than grabs?"
"Um, one day Jordan called me after school and he told me that Derek was planning to get me to..." you trailed off, not wanting to say it.
"I know you think it's disgusting to say, Y/N, but I need you to say what he said to you."
You looked up at Jay, feeling like a five-year-old who was about to say a swear word. "It's okay. We won't laugh or get mad."
"He uh, Jordan told me that Derek was going to get me to give him a blowjob...even if he had to force me to do it."
A few tears ran down your face. Even though your brother was a cop, telling the actual cops in an actual statement made it that much more real.
"Do you want a break? Some water maybe?" Hailey asked.
"No, I'm fine. I just wanna get this over with."
"Okay. Did anyone try and tell the principal? Any teachers? Other adults?"
"Girls tried, they really did. They told Mr. White, the principal, but he said that they didn't have any proof. And, he also said that they were football players and that some of them had shots at scholarships for D1 schools. Why would we want to wreck that for them, is what he had asked us. And, Derek's dad is on the school board, so we knew that even if it went further than the principal and to the superintendent or school board, that nothing would happen.
"I was gonna try to tell Mr. White once, but I was cornered before I got into the main office, so I was scared."
You turned to Jay now. "I'm sorry. I should've told you when this all started but I didn't want to get made fun of or have more things happen at school because what if they canceled football and it was all my fault and--"
"You need to remember that you did nothing wrong. Absolutely nothing, you hear me?" you nodded. "And what White did, basically saying that boys will be boys, that makes me sick. And if I had a way to arrest him, I would."
"Thanks, Jay."
A comfortable silence fell over you before you explained everything else, like Derek shoving you against your car and forcibly grabbing your ass. You also explained how Jordan had said that he was planning on taking your keys so you'd have to have oral with him to get them back and how other players were planning on following you home.
After that, you were out in the bullpen, when Trudy Platt came up the stairs. "Hank, Halstead, I need you to go this address."
Platt handed Voight a piece of paper, which you're assuming had the address on it. "Why? This doesn't have to do with our case. Couldn't patrol do it?"
"I don't think Halstead would be pleased if I put his brother in lockup, so I figured I'd have you two go check it out," she answered.
"What did Will do?" you piped up before Jay could.
"Let's just say him and Derek Evans each got a few punches in," Trudy answered. "I thought you two could be the ones to go down and get him."
"Thanks, Trudy," Voight said as he started to walk downstairs. But, he stopped when he noticed that Jay wasn't following.
"Uh, Hailey," Jay called. "Could you maybe take Y/N to Will's house while I do this? I just don't want her at home in case they somehow got our address."
"Yeah, no problem," Hailey answered, taking the spare key Jay handed her.
You four walked down the stairs and then each headed your separate ways. Once Jay and Voight were in the car, Voight turned to him. "Care to tell me how Will found the name and address?"
"Sarge, I have absolutely no idea." And then he remembered the text he sent. "Oh, oh shit. Listen, it was an accident. He asked me if we had any new information, and I told him that Derek was 18 and he must've just went from that. Sorry, I wasn't thinking. To me, this isn't just an investigation, it's an investigation that involves my sister and I was just giving information to my brother without thinking about the legal ramifications."
"I get it, Jay. I did the same thing with Justin."
"Are we really arresting him?"
"No, but we are gonna have a chat with Derek and his father."
***
"I want to press charges!" Derek Evans' dad yelled when Jay and Hank rolled up to the scene. "This man assaulted my son!"
"Yeah? Well, your son assaulted my sister, so I think it's even!" Will spat back.
"Let's just take a moment to talk this out," Voight said, stepping between the two.
"I won't talk until you put this man in handcuffs!"
Voight turned and nodded at Jay. "Sarge, you can't be--"
"I am serious, Jay. Now do it and bring him to the car. Now."
Jay gritted his teeth and put Will's hands behind his back. "You have the right to right to remain silent. If you give up this right, anything you say can and will be held against you in a court of law. If you do not have the money to afford an attorney, one will be provided for you. Do you understand these rights as they have been told to you?" Jay recited as he led Will to the car.
"Yes. Jay, what are you--"
"Just go with it," Jay hissed in his ear, causing his older brother to shut up.
Jay put Will in the back of the car and then got in the passenger seat. "Now, in a second I'm going to take these off and then I'm gonna go inside and talk to them with Voight. Do not, under any circumstances, get out of the car. You understand me?"
"Yeah, now can you get these off me? You put 'em on real tight, Jay."
Jay smirked as he took Will out of the car and undid his cuffs. "Payback for all the times you poked me with a needle." Then, he looked at Will's face. "Looks like the kid got a few good punches on you. There's gonna be a real nice shiner there," he joked.
"Shut up and go finish your job." Will rolled his eyes as Jay put the cuffs back in his pocket and left Will in the car.
When Jay walked into the Evans' residence he saw Derek, Derek's dad, and Hank all sitting down at the kitchen table. "Now, we know that your son has threatened to force himself on a girl at school, so this can go one of two ways," Voight started as Jay stood behind him. "We can either contact the media and tell them all about this little game he and his teammates like to play, but that he took a step too far, which would ensure he doesn't get into a good college. Or, you could transfer him out of his current high school and to a new one and this doesn't get out to the press. Your choice."
"You don't have enough to charge him, so why would I pull my son out of school his senior year?"
"Because, once word gets out, well no college wants a guy with a history of sexual assault on their football team. It sets a bad image."
"It's not like I even did anything!" Derek protested, while still trying to hold the ice pack to his lip that Will had busted open.
"Oh, didn't do anything? Let me enlighten you. You got the pictures, Sarge?" Jay asked.
"Got 'em right here."
Voight laid all the pictures of the leaderboard and the messages about you on the table. "The girl who Derek said he wanted to get oral sex from? That guy in the back of our car right now is her brother. Now, do you understand why the fight broke out, Mr. Evans?"
Derek's dad looked back and forth between the pictures and his son, trying to figure out how his son could do this. "Derek, did you say these things?"
"Oh, he did more than say. He slammed the girl up against her car and forcibly grabbed her backside," Jay said, not wanting to admit he was your brother or else there would be a conflict of interest in this encounter. And, even though Derek knew, Jay was the one with a gun so he figured the best idea would be to not piss him off.
Voight laid the picture of your bruised cheek on the table. "This is what happened because of that. She's lucky she didn't break her cheekbone."
"I'm- I'm sorry," Derek finally spoke up. "It was just supposed to be a fun game that we bet some money on who could get the most points."
"A game? A game is football. This is bordering on assault. We are far from a game," Jay told him.
"So, what's it gonna be? Take Derek out of school and transfer him or do I call the media? You have five seconds," Voight told him, pulling out his phone to silently tell them that he wasn't bluffing.
Derek's eyes widened. "I'll transfer! I'll transfer!"
"Derek, we need time to think about this--"
"No, Dad, I need a shot at a scholarship to go D1."
"Then it's settled. Thank you for your time."
Jay and Voight left the house and went back to the car. "What's the verdict?" Will asked.
"He's transferring schools," Voight answered and handed the folder of evidence photos to Jay.
"Why are you giving these to me?"
Voight shrugged. "Do with them what you want, Halstead. I wouldn't blame you, no one would."
***
"Hailey, can you give me and Y/N a second?" Jay asked as you entered you house and shrugged off your coats.
"Of course."
"You can stay out here. We'll talk in Y/N's room," Jay said.
You walked down the hall and went into your room and sat on your bed. "So, what's up? Did you arrest Derek?"
"Unfortunately, we didn't have enough evidence to do that."
You looked down at your hands. "But then it's just gonna keep happening, Jay. I don't wanna go back there."
"Back where?" he asked, sitting next to you.
"To school, it'll just be worse."
"Hey, no it won't because he's transferring schools."
"But the other boys will just keep doing it, Jay. I'm terrified."
"Hey, hey look at me." You looked up at Jay, trying to stop yourself from crying. "That will not happen, I can promise you that."
"But you don't know that."
"Just trust me on this one."
"Okay," you whispered.
"And one more thing," Jay started. "If it didn't already go without saying, you're ungrounded because I'm assuming you brought that knife to school to use in case anything happened. And, with what happened yesterday, I can't say I blame you."
"Thanks, I figured as much."
"Now, next time you need something for self-defense, we're just gonna get you some pepper spray."
"Good idea."
"Let's go back out to Hailey and you two can look at Pinterest or whatever for dresses or whatever it is girls do with that stuff."
***
The next morning, you woke up to message after message about school. There were links sent you entitled Football Player Assaults Girl Outside of School Because of a Bet and Principal of a Chicago High School Resigns Because of Complaints from Girls about the Football Team Sexually Harassing Them, but He Didn't do Anything about It.
You could not believe it. Just 48 hours ago you were freaking out about having to go to school for fear of a guy grabbing you or doing something worse. And now, you could go to school and feel comfortable. And, those boys wouldn't do anything else and if something did happen, you'd be able to tell the assistant principal--who was now acting principal--about what was happening and have something actually be done about it.
"Jay!" you yelled as you ran into the kitchen, almost bumping into him.
"Whoa, slow down! I almost spilled hot coffee on you!" he laughed as he set his mug down on the table and turned back to you.
"Sorry, sorry. Have you seen this? Someone leaked the leaderboard and now Mr. White resigned! I'll actually be able to focus in class now!" You slid the phone to him and he looked at the titles in the notifications. "I just wonder who did it."
"Told you I'd handle it." Then, he took a sip of his coffee.
"Oh my God, you were the one who leaked it?" Your eyes almost popped out of your head. Couldn't that get him in trouble?
"I never said that."
"You just sipped your coffee like that Kermit and the sips tea meme, so yeah, I think you did," you playfully argued.
"Well, technically, it wasn't me. I just passed on a copy of the pictures to a CI of mine, whose cousin happens to work for the Chicago Sun-Times."
"Bye-bye college football for all these assholes."
"And the city's a safer place because of it."
"Hey, what do I always say: Go save Chicago."
"Team effort. And this time, Y/N, you got to play a part in that team."
A/N: I know it's been almost a month since I've posted an imagine, but school is busy and I'm writing long imagines, which usually take me a week to write, so that's why. Oh, and happy Valentine's Day (bc that's in like 2 days). Go cuddle with your boyfriend/girlfriend if you have one. Or, if you're single (like me) go read some cute fluffy fanfiction and eat all the chocolate!

Spill the Beans
Pairing: Connor Rhodes x Halstead! reader
Summary: Y/N works at the hospital alongside her brother, Will, and her secret boyfriend, Connor, but when she finally wants to spill the truth about her relationship, an obstacle comes up that stops her from doing it the way she planned
Requested: Yes, by anonymous
Warnings: slight swearing, mentions of blood, drugs, and violence
Word Count: 1,475 Words
“It’s going to have to come out at one point, Y/N,” Will told me as him, Jay, and I were having beers together at Molly’s.
“And it will, but when I want it to, and not before,” I clarify and take a sip of my beer, whose bitterness I was well used to by now.
“Um, I’m a detective in the most elite police unit in Chicago. If I wanted to, I could do some digging and find out like that,” Jay pointed out.
“But you won’t because you respect my privacy,” I retort. “Look, guys, I would love to tell you who my boyfriend is. I really would. But now is just not the time.”
“Fine. We’ll back off. But I think it’s better if you tell us sooner rather than later,” Will said.
“Mmm,” I hum and take another sip of beer. After having beers with my brothers, I headed back to my apartment, and when I unlocked the door, I saw Connor lounging on the couch with the TV on in front of him.
“Hey, babe,” he said once he noticed me walk in. “How are your brothers?”
“You know how Will is doing since you see him practically every day, but Jay is doing good. They were asking about you,” I say.
“Oh yeah? What about?” Connor asked.
“Well, not you specifically,” I clarify. “They asked about my boyfriend, but they don’t know it’s you. I was hoping we could talk about that.”
“All right,” Connor spoke and pulled me down into his lap. “What’s up?”
“We’ve been dating for a few months now, and I’ve been really supportive of you wanting to keep our relationship a secret, but I think it’s time we tell everyone about us,” I explain.
Connor smiled. “I guess we could start telling people. I mean, I love you, and I don’t think that’s going to chance anytime soon.”
“Great. After our next shift, we can invite Jay and Will out for drinks, and we can tell them then. Thanks for agreeing to this, Connor,” I murmur and press my lips to his for a brief kiss.
.........................................
Tonight was the night. Tonight I was finally going to tell Will and Jay who I was dating. For some reason, I was a bit nervous. What if they didn’t approve of Connor? I mean, I knew they would, but the thought still nagged at me. I was standing at the nurses station waiting for a new patient to treat, because weirdly, there was almost nobody here. Just as I thought that, the ambulance bay doors opened and two paramedics pushed in a gurney. The odd part was that they were followed by a police officer.
“Y/N, you’re up,” Maggie informed me.
“What do we got?” I ask the paramedic and slip on some gloves before entering the trauma room.
“Peter Maddox. Late 30′s. He’s on some sort of drug,” one of the paramedics answered as Peter began thrashing around in his bed.
“Cocaine? Heroin? MDMA? Can you be more specific?” I question.
“I cannot,” the woman replied.
“Mr. Maddox? Can you hear me?” I ask and shine a light into his eyes, seeing that his pupils were enlarged. Yeah. This guy was definitely on something. That’s when I noticed that he was restrained. “Uh, hey. I’m going to need you to take these bonds off him.”
“Sorry, miss. He’s highly dangerous,” the police officer told me.
“And I understand that, but I can’t fully examine him with the bonds on. Uncuff him. Now,” I demand. The police officer sighed, but followed my order and uncuffed Peter.
“Mr. Maddox, I’m Dr. Halstead. I want to help you feel better. Could you please tell me what you’re on?” I ask. Peter didn’t respond and rocked back and forth on the trauma bed. “Okay, uh, April, order a full tox screen, blood work, and a urine test. I can’t help him until I know what he’s on.” As soon as I said “blood work”, Peter snapped and jumped out of bed.
“No blood work. I don’t want blood work!” Peter shouted.
“Mr. Maddox, please get back into bed. You need to rest so I can run some tests,” I say.
“I said no blood work!” Peter yelled and shoved me roughly right up against the trauma room door. My head hit the glass hard, and I could hear a crack start to span the door. The police officer rushed forward and grabbed Peter, forcing him back onto the bed where he was once again restrained.
“Y/N, are you okay?” April asked me.
“I-I’m fine. Can you ge-” I cut myself off as my vison blurred, and I suddenly fell unconscious.
Connor’s POV
“Help!” April called out from one of the trauma rooms. “I need some help in here!” I set down my tablet and ran into the room to find Y/N unconscious on the floor with a small puddle of blood pooling around her head. I glanced at the glass of the trauma room door, which had a huge crack in it surrounded by a bit of blood, and then towards the patient who was struggling in his restraints, and I knew what had happened. But I didn’t focus on that. I knelt down next to Y/N and pulled my flashlight from my pocket, shining it into her eyes.
“Shit. Her pupils are uneven. Someone page Dr. Abrams now,” I order. Once we had gotten Y/N situated in a bed, Dr. Abrams came by to examine her. The good news was that nothing looked to be wrong. She just had a deep cut on the back of her head and would probably be unconscious for a few hours. I was sitting by her bedside holding her hand when Will and Jay walked into the room. Both of them caught sight of me holding Y/N’s hand, and almost immediately, they pieced two and two together.
“So, you’re the boyfriend,” Will guessed.
“Uh, yeah. I’m the boyfriend,” I restate and stand up, placing Y/N’s hand back on her bed. “I should get back to work. And you guys deserve some time with your sister so...”
“No,” Jay said which interrupted me from leaving. “You should stay. Y/N would want you to be here. And by the looks of it, we’ve got a lot to discuss."
Y/N’s POV
It felt like I was asleep for a long time. I felt groggy and confused, and my head felt like it had been pounded in by a sledgehammer. When I opened my eyes, I was met by a bright light, and I groaned, closing my eyes again.
“Y/N? You awake?” Jay asked. I hummed in response and opened my eyes once more, blinking a few times to get used to the light. When I finally fully opened my eyes, I was met with an odd sight. Both my brothers and my boyfriend were sitting in my room.
“What the hell happened?” I question and rub my eyes. That’s when I felt that my head had a huge piece of gauze wrapped around it, and everything came flowing back to me. “Mr. Maddox did this, right?”
“Yeah,” Connor responded. “He’s being taken care of right now. But don’t worry about him. How are you feeling?”
“Good, except for the fact that my head is pounding. Who the hell is my doctor? They did not give me enough meds,” I note.
Will laughed. “The pain should go away in an hour or two.”
“Okay,” I murmur and glance between, Will, Jay, and Connor. Something was up, and I think I knew what it was. “You guys know, don’t you?”
“Yeah,” Jay said. “We know. What was the reason for not telling us though? Did you think we wouldn’t approve of Connor or something?”
“Actually, it was Connor’s decision to keep it a secret,” I answer. “He’s didn’t want people to find out we were dating until we thought we would be together for awhile. We were going to tell you tonight after shift at Molly’s, but things changed, obviously.”
“So it didn’t have anything to do with our rocky past?” Will asked Connor.
Connor shook his head. “It had nothing to do with you, Will.”
“Cool. So, Y/N, since you’re going to be here for awhile, I think we should catch up a bit. Maybe talk more about you and Connor,” Will suggested.
I groaned. “Could this day get any worse?”
“It could. Because we’re not leaving until you tell us everything,” Jay stated with a small smile.
“You might want to go,” I tell Connor.
Connor chuckled. “I was planning on it. I’ll be by to check up on you later,” he spoke and kissed my head before leaving the room.
“So,” I say and look between my two brothers. “Where should we start?”

I Only Have Eyes For You
Fandom: Chicago Med / One Chicago
Character/s: Connor Rhodes x Reader,
Warning/s: none
Word Count: 3,162
Request: Hi there, can I get an imagine for reader x Connor Rhodes. Lightly based upon 01x03 Fallback where Connor treats on one of his father's employees and his father tried to take him off the case. So like the reader and Connor are married (got married during their residency) and the father flirts with reader who also works at med not knowing that's his son's wife as he didn't think someone like Connor could snag a girl like the reader. The ending is up to you. Thank you x
“Maybe you should talk to him,” you suggested, putting your hand on your husband, Connor’s, shoulder as he stared distantly into his locker, his mind clearly elsewhere.
“I don’t want to talk to him Y/N, I’ve barely spoken to him in years,” Connor sighed, slamming his locker closed and turning to face you. He hadn’t expect to see his dad today, heading into Med behind an ambulance basically demanding to speak to Miss Goodwin and his son at once. Connor had been in surgery at the start of shift so he hadn’t actually come face to face with the man yet, but it was only a matter of time.
“Well now might be your chance, he is in the ED afterall,” you reminded him and he rubbed his face with his hands. It had been a long surgery, starting off the last shift of a very long week, and you knew the last thing your husband wanted was to talk to his father, but maybe he needed to.
“He’s downstairs because one of his employees got hurt on the job and he’s trying to do damage control before a lawsuit is filed, he isn’t here to see me,” Connor all but snapped, his face softening when he realised and squeezing your hand apologetically. There had been some kind of mishap at one of his stores from what you could gather, and one of Cornelius’ workers had found himself practically crushed under a bit of the structure that wasn’t as up to code as it should be.
“I get that, really Connor I do, I’m just saying that while he’s here, maybe you should talk to him, even if it’s just to say your piece,” you tried, knowing that Connor still had a lot of baggage surrounding his father, baggage that had been putting a bit of a strain on your marriage, or more specifically, any discussion of having children. Getting things off of his chest might be the only way for him to move forward, you reasoned.
“I have nothing to say to him, Y/N, he’s the parent, not me, it shouldn’t be on me to be the bigger person,” Connor replied, and he was right, but damn if the Rhodes men weren’t the most stubborn men you’d ever met.
“But you are the bigger person, the better person-” you began, knowing that Connor was ten times the man his father was, and maybe it was about time Cornelius Rhodes saw that for himself, but you were starting to realise that you were crossing a line as Connor interrupted you.
“Y/N, the last time I tried to reach out to my father he decided he’d rather go on a business trip than attend his own son’s wedding,” he said, the bitter undertones very clear as you remembered how crushed he’d been. No matter how bad their relationship was, and even if he wouldn’t admit it, you knew Connor still loved his father, and for him to not show up to his own wedding had broken his heart. “Baby he’s never even met you, and that’s that on him, he’s made his priorities perfecrly clear.” he continued, cupping your face in his hands.
“Okay, okay,” you nodded, realising you weren’t getting anywhere with this conversation, “do you want me to drop it?” It was what you always asked each other when it seemed like you were going to have an argument, or whether you weren’t sure if you’d crossed a line in a conversation, you tried to respect each others boundaries as much as possible.
“Please, I know you’re trying to help but my relationship with my father is basically unsalvageable, and I’m moving forward,” he smiled but it didn’t reach his eyes, he was trying hard to make you believe him but you both knew you really didn’t, this wasn’t the kind of thing you just moved forward from.
“If you’re sure, he won’t be around forever,” you gave it one last try before letting it go for now, telling yourself you’d broach the subject again at a later date.
“I know, and I am,” he said, giving you a quick kiss before pulling away and grabbing his stethescope off of the table next to you, “thank you, though,” he added.
“For what?” You asked finally closing your own locker.
“For being so very you,” he smiled, a genuine smile this time as he looked back to you, “I love you.”
“I love you too,” you replied, kissing his again as your phone vibrated in your pocket. Stepping back you fished it out, seeing a text from Will. “Oh that’s me, Will wants me in three to help with Mr Harris,” you explained to Connor as you both headed out the door towards the ED.
“My father’s guy?” Connor realised, opening the door for you and letting you out first as you checked over the message; apparently Cornelius was demanding a second opinion, clearly not satisfied by Will’s, but you decided not to tell Connor that right now.
“Yeah that’s the one,” you nodded, slipping the phone back into your pocket before he could see the rest of the text as you noticed Maggie signalling for you to hurry it along, that couldn’t be good.
“Good luck, you’re gonna need it,” Connor noted Maggie’s impatient gestures as you picked up the pace.
“You’re all the luck I need,” you joked, winking at him as you parted ways, Dr Latham needed him upstairs in 5 for a consult, a fact which he was more than happy with since he was supposed to be working the ED all day.
“Ooh cheesy, go on get out of here,” Connor laughed as you waved your goodbyes, heading to three.
Maggie met you half way and handed you Mr Harris’ chart, looking irritated.
“Everything okay?” You asked, noting the angry voices you could now hear coming from the room to your right, the curtains not providing much in the way of sound proofing, not that you thought Cornelius cared much.
“How Connor turned out the way he did with a father like that is beyond me,” Maggie told you quietly as you quickly flipped through the chart, “he’s been demanding this, that and the other since he got here, and now he thinks Dr Halstead’s not telling Mr Harris all his option because he just wants to ‘extort him for more money’,” she mimicked in a hushed tone as you rolled you eyes, it’s not like he couldn’t afford it anyway, you thought, but there was something about having more money that made some people think they were so damn entitled...
Putting on your best cordial smile you pulled back the curtain and entered, the men stopping in their heated conversation as you did, frozen on some discussion about cost. Will did his best to hide his relieved look when he saw you and Cornelius grumbled in frustration, completely unaware he was standing face to face with his daughter-in-law for the first time.
“Everything okay in here?” You asked, looking between the two men on their feet and the tired, slightly embarrassed, looking man in the hospital bed.
“Terrific sweetheart,” Cornelius retorted sarcastically and you internally rolled your eyes. Externally, you kept your features schooled and looked to the patient in the bed.
“Hi Mr Harris, my name is Doctor Y/L/N,” you told him, having kept your last name when you’d married Connor, a fact you were pretty glad about right now. You offered your hand and he shook it gratefully.
“Pleasure,” he said as you stepped back, facing Cornelius Rhodes as he rubbed his temple before looking to you, taking you in for the first time as he straightened his posture and cleared his throat.
“Cornelius Rhodes, it’s lovely to meet you,” he offered his hand and you shook it, the way he was looking at you making your skin crawl a little as he finally let go. “I was just discussing with your collegue over here the best treatment for my man here, and we seem to be having a disagreement,” the way his demeanor had changed in your presence was alarming, and Will was clearly taken aback by it too, he’d gone from demanding to charming in the blink of an eye.
“I see, well from reading Mr Harris’ chart it’s clear that there are only two option available, the impact seems to have done some internal damage that, while it might heal on its own over time, will most likely require surgery,” you explained in your perfected doctor voice as Will threw you a grateful glance. Cornelius clenched his jaw as he tried to maintain his own facade, pretending to mull over your words even though you knew Will would have said basically the same thing, and that Cornelius had already made up his mind.
“Surgery really is the best option Mr Harris,” Will told the patient, but instead of replying he looked back to Cornelius, the man who would be paying for either option no doubt. The surgery would be expensive, you knew that, and it grated you to know that the fate of this man’s life possibly rested on the greed of Cornelius Rhodes. Could Connor talk some sense into him? You mused to yourself as he began to answer.
“I understand your concern,” he said finally, addressing you alone, a far cry from the accusations of greed he’d thrown at Will before you arrived, “but that kind of surgery is not only expensive, but the recovery time would put him out of work, and he wouldn’t want that.” You hid your grimace as Mr Harris nodded, clearly feeling like he had to agree.
“I have deadlines coming up,” he spoke up as Cornelius gestured to him as if to say, see, there you have it, settled, as you did your best to maintain your friendly face.
“I understand where you’re coming from Mr Rhodes,” you lied, regreting ever trying to get Connor to patch things up with this vile, self-serving man. He didn’t deserve Connor for a son. “But if we leave it and it gets worse, the surgery will be much more invasive and expensive further down the line, not to mention the high risk and potential complications,” Mr Harris paled a little, but still waited for Cornelius to answer.
Seriously? He could sue this man and yet he was still scared of him, the man probably had no means of paying for the court bills that would require anyway, he needed Cornelius’ paychecks to keep a roof over his head. And he was making decisions about his life like he was a god damn asset and not a person.
“Well, that would be unfortunate,” Cornelius pondered and Will looked like he was close to losing it. It was no secret he prioritised his patients over all else, even their own wishes sometimes, and it was also no secret he’d never liked Cornelius Rhodes.
“Mr Rhodes-” Mr Harris voiced up but he was shushed, the other man still thinking. You didn’t know whether you or Will were closer to punching the man, Mr Harris clearly wanting to have the surgery now in fear of more severe future complications. If Cornelius wasn’t such an arrogant-
“Alright, if you thinking it will save money in the future- and more important of course Joseph’s well-being, then I suppose we could do the surgery,” he decided and Mr Harris sighed in relief. Cornelius smiled smugly, like he’d done something so generous, it made you sick to your stomach.
You consciously twisted the wedding ring on your finger as Will fetched the paperwork and soon Mr Harris was being wheeled off to wait for his surgery in a room upstairs, clearing the bay in the ED for the next patient. Will was more than happy to take the next person through the doors as you finalised the paperwork with Maggie, scheduling in his surgery in the system.
Connor texted you then as Cornelius was practically stalking towards you at the desks. He was letting you know that he was finished with Dr Latham and had thought about what you’d said, and maybe it was a good idea to talk to his father before he left. He’d be coming down any minute, but before you could reply Cornelius had reached you at the desks, a predatory look in his eyes that set off your fight or flight response.
“Dr Y/LN,” he grinned and you returned a polite and professional smile as he invaded your personal space, looking you up and down in a way that was so not okay, even if you weren’t his son’s wife. “Thank you for your help in there, your input was very... refreshing.”
“Of course, I was just doing my job, I’m glad Mr Harris is able to get the treatment he needs,” you replied tightly, realising that this conversation was far from over as he continued talking.
“It was the least I could you,” he said, seeming to take your statement as some kind of thanks or compliment to his ‘generosity’. “Say, how about you and me grab a coffee in the cafeteria so you can explain more about how this procedure works, on me of course. If you’re busy now, maybe after you finish work?” As he finished talking he inched closer to you, eyeing you suggestively.
Was he making a pass at you? Was this actually happening right now? You blinked in shock and it took you a second for your brain to process what was happening before you could answer him.
“Mr Rhodes, I’m flattered” you began and he grinned, like he already had it figured out that you were going to say yes even though you were far from actually flattered, “and while I would be happy to discuss your employee’s treatment with you in a professional manner, I’m... I’m married,” you explained, flashing your ring at him, the ring that his son had put on your finger.
“Well I don’t see him around anywhere,” Cornelius winked at you and you took an instinctive step back, but he either didn’t notice or didn’t care, probably the latter if you were honest. “He’d never know.”
“Oh I’m certain he would,” a voice said from behind you and you turned to see Connor heading towards you both, anger clear on his face as he looked from you to his father.
“And why’s that?” Cornelius asked defiantly, practically looking down his nose at his son, clearly not getting the hint from what he had said about who your husband was.
“Because I am her husband,” Connor said definitely, standing next to your side as you relaxed, feeling instantly better in his presence. Cornelius balked a little, he really had had no idea who you were this entire time. It took him a second to regain his composure but when he did, instead of opting for the apology you’d expect from any normal person, he did the exact opposite, actually defending his slimy actions.
“How was I supposed to know that?” He huffed like he wasn’t invited to your wedding, when he’d made the decision to not come of his own accord. Connor put a protective hand on the small of your back, aware you were drawing a bit of attention as April had paused her typing on the computer.
“Well, dad, maybe if you’d come to our wedding, or our anniversary, or any of my birthdays, you would have known that Y/N’s been my wife for the past three and a half years,” Connor’s voice wasn’t raised but you could tell he was getting more and more aggitated by this encounter. He wouldn’t have liked anyone making a move on his wife, let alone his own father.
Cornelius had the nerve to chuckle at that, “honestly I’m just surprised a boy like you could wrangle a woman like this,” he said as you clenched your jaw, so many parts of that sentence rubbing you the wrong was. You could tell Connor felt the same, his stance very defensive as you replied.
"What is that supposed to mean?” You demanded before Connor could speak, Cornelius’ eyes snapping to you like he’d forgotten you were an actual person and not just an object to fight over. “What about me and Connor is so surprising to you?”
“Honestly, you could do better.” he said matter-of-factly and you rolled your eyes, any appearance of a professional facade gone as you faced your father-in-law.
Now it was Connor’s turn to laugh, but it was a dry laugh as he said: “and what, you think your ‘better’?” Cornelius shrugged, the look on his face telling you that that was in fact what he meant. Connor shook his head in disbelief, the first time he was seeing his father in a long time and all of his reservations and fears were being entirely justified as he stood before the two of you.
It was time to end this, you decided, folding your arms and squaring up to Cornelius. “Better? The man who’d rather save money than a man’s life, who thinks it’s appropriate to not only hit on a woman while she’s at work, but to blatantly tell her to... cheat on her husband when she tries to politely tell you she’s not interested. Connor’s a good man, a much much better man than you, inspite of the fact that your raised him, and he doesn’t owe you another second of his time, neither of us do.” You took a breath as both Rhodes men blinked at you in shock. “Now, Mr Rhodes if you’ll excuse us we actually have jobs to be doing, I’d be happy to have somebody escort you to where you can wait,” you finished, seeing April grin out the corner of you eye as Cornelius got a little flustered, clearly not used to anyone, especially women you reckoned, putting him in his place.
“I’m had enough of trying to reach out to you, I felt like I still had something to prove to you, like it was on me to mend what was broken between us. But you’re not worth it dad, you’re just not worth it. We’re done here, stay away from me, and definitely stay away from my wife,” Connor told his father, gesturing with his head for security to come show him to the waiting room.
“Oh this is far from over,” Cornelius raised his voice, pointing his finger at his son as security reached you. But Connor didn’t waiver, clear for the first time as he just looked at his father, shaking his head before turning to walk away. Everything that needed to be said had been said, and he was finally ready to walk away from his father, quite literally in this case as you went to follow your husband.
This wound would never go away entirely, but now, maybe, you really could move forward.

He’s My Brother (Chicago Med)
Chicago Med
Y/N Rhodes, sister of Conner Rhodes and the girlfriend of Will Halstead, decides to confront Ava Bekker on everything she’s done to her brother which doesn’t go so well.
Warnings: Near death experience, Ava Bekker bashing
Requested = Yes
Okay, so I really love Ava Bekker, or I love Norma Kuhling so much that it influences my perception of Ava...I don’t really know, but whatever it is, I actually had a really hard time writing this and it ended up being pretty bad...
“Hey how was your shift?” You asked Will as he was leaving. You were just going to start yours and had bumped into your boyfriend while you were walking towards the hospital.
“Not bad,” Will replied and gave you a quick peck on the lips. “It would have been better if you were there.”
You smiled, “Don’t worry, I’ll see you tonight.”
“It’s a deal then,” Will gave you another quick kiss before walking off towards his car.
You walked into the ER, immediately greeted by Maggie who had a patient already lined up for you.
“Treatment 2 sounds like a sprained wrist,” She said and handed you the tablet without even saying good-morning. “Fell off a bike or something.”
“Nice to see you too, Maggie,” You joked as you took the tablet from her hand.
Maggie raised an eyebrow, “We can chat later. Right now, the ER is overflowing with people who need to be looked at.”
“Alrighty then,” You said and headed towards Treatment 2.
~~~
“Hey,” You said as you flopped down on the couch next to your brother in the doctor’s lounge. It had been patient after patient all day so far and you hadn’t been able to catch a break since now.
“Hey yourself,” Connor sighed and tiredly rubbed his eyes.
You looked over at him, slightly concerned, “Is everything okay?”
“Yeah, just has been a long day,” Connor replied but you knew your brother too well to accept that as his answer.
“Yeah, that’s complete crap,” You snorted, “Now, cut the crap and tell me what’s really up.”
Connor glanced at you with an amused look, “I really can’t get anything past you, can I?”
“Nope,” You shook your head, “So, what’s wrong?”
“Apparently Ava slept with Dad,” Connor blurted out before groaning and running a hand through his hair.
You’re eyes bulged out of your eye-socket, “WHAT?!”
“Are you really going to make me say that again?” Connor looked over at you with an exasperated expression.
You shook your head, still in shock, “No...no.”
Next to you, Connor sighed but then after that, there was only silence between the two of you.
“Did she really-”
Connor cut you off, “I don’t know.”
Even though neither you or Connor had a very good relationship with your father, that didn’t make the act of Ava sleeping with him any more acceptable.
You two sat in silence a little longer before Connor’s pager went off, signalling that they needed him somewhere.
“I have to go,” Connor told you, even though you already knew what the pager meant.
You nodded, “I’ll see you later.”
Connor got up and left the doctor’s lounge. Surprisingly, your pager didn’t go off which was rather odd considering how busy your day had started.
Deciding to take advantage of this moment, you got up and headed up to the surgical floor where you had a feeling was where you could find a specific person.
Your feeling was right, and you found Ava Bekker in one of the storage rooms where surgical materials ranging from scalpels to gauze were kept.
“What the hell!” You exploded as you shut the door behind you.
Ava turned around and looked at you with a rather blank expression.
“Pardon?”
“I don’t absolutely love my dad but you can’t go sleeping with him!” You said
Ava narrowed her eyes and started approaching you. Determined not to show any kind of weakness, you stood your ground and folded your arms across your chest.
“Who told you? Connor?” She tilted her head slightly and you snorted.
“Who else?”
Ava nodded, “And who told Connor?”
You didn’t reply because you didn’t know who told your brother that Ava slept with your dad.
“Your father was the one spreading the word around that I slept with him,” Ava told you, “If anything, I think you should be talking to him about what his conversation topics are.”
You opened your mouth but when no words came out, you closed it again.
“Connor deserves better than what you’re giving him,” You blurted out.
It was true though.
Throughout your childhood, it was always Connor that was there. Not your father. Not even Claire.
Connor.
It was Connor that taught you how to ride a bike. Who taught you how to tie your shoes. It was Connor that you went to when you were having trouble with homework. It was Connor that you went to when you were having trouble at school.
“What goes on between us doesn’t involve you,” Ava spat back at you, clearly starting to get angry.
“He’s my brother,” You shot back, “So yes, it does involve me.”
Suddenly, you found yourself backed against the wall, the door just to the right of you. However, Ava had somehow gotten her hands on a scalpel and that scalpel was now dangerously close to your neck.
“You stay out of the way and mind your own business,” Ava growled, “Got it?”
You remained silent, not quite comprehending what was happening.
“Got it?”
The scalpel inched closer and you could now feel the cold blade against your skin.
“He’s my brother,” You whispered before quickly opening the door and ducking out of the room, stumbling into the bright safety of the hallway.
You didn’t look back once as you made your way back to the ER.
“There you are Y/N!” Maggie waved you over, “Where have you been? I’ve been looking all over for you!”
“It’s a long story that I don’t quite know,” You replied numbly, still in some sort of a daze.
Maggie nodded, not really paying attention, her focus mainly on the tablet and the long list of patients that still needed to be seen.
“There’s a girl in Treatment 1 with a nasty cold and a man in Treatment 4 with a suspected broken leg,” Maggie handed you a tablet and you were whisked back into the busy ER.
~~~
“Hey, how was your shift?” Will asked as you walked into your shared apartment.
The more you thought, the more you wondered if Ava was actually prepared to kill you earlier. You weren’t able to catch Connor again since the incident and was so exhausted you decided just to go home.
You flopped down on the couch next to Will and furrowed your eyebrows, still trying to comprehend today’s activities.
“I think someone tried to kill me today,” You said, rather casually actually.
Will chuckled, thinking you were just joking around but when he saw that you weren’t laughing, or smiling even, his eyes went wide.
“What? Who?” He asked, his voice laced with concern.
You swallowed hard, “Dr. Bekker.”
“What happened?” Will asked and scooched closer towards you before wrapping a strong arm around your shoulders.
“Connor told me she slept with my dad and so I went to confront her about it,” You explained shakily, “And then she told me to stay out of her and Connor’s business and...”
Will didn’t push you to go on. Instead, he waited for you to talk on your own accord.
“And she held a scalpel to my neck,” You breathed out after a moment.
You had held it together the entire day, your mind was too busy to really think about it but now...it had plenty of time. You let out a small whimper and Will pulled you closer towards his warm body.
“You’re okay now,” He whispered before planting a kiss on your forehead. “You’re safe.”
You nodded and let him hold you.
“We should probably get the police involved,” Will told you.
“NO!” You exclaimed, your voice no longer shaky, “Absolutely not.”
Will looked at you, confused, “She tried to kill you!”
You shook your head, adamant about your decision, “No, I’ll tell Mrs. Goodwin tomorrow morning. I just want to go to bed and snuggle with you for the rest of tonight.”
Will nodded, “Then that’s what we’ll do.”

❄ six ❄
Standing in the kitchen of the Ruzek's home early the next morning, Hailey was standing over a pot of oil as she cooked for the picnic she was set to go on with Jay in just a few hours. She had originally planned to make the greek dessert with her mother — after all, she had been the one to teach Hailey — but after the events of the previous afternoon and having the knowledge that her father was probably about to start drinking again once he got home, she had decided that going over to her best friend's house early was her best bet.
"Piss off, Adam," Hailey barked at her best friend, half joking as he tried to pinch one of the piping hot loukoumades. "You're like a seagull, I swear."
"They just look so good, Hailey! I can't help myself!"
"If your impatient ass would wait ten more minutes, they'll be ready with the nutella drizzle and everything."
"But that's so long!"
Hailey rolled her eyes, pulling the bowl away from the boy slightly to make a point. "Sometimes I forget that you possess the mental age of a toddler."
Adam only scrunched his face up cheekily before swiping yet another one of the round, golden donuts, ducking in an attempt to narrowly avoid Hailey's frustrated swat. Secretly, she didn't mind as much as she let on — after all, she had made the dessert enough times to know this would happen — though it wouldn't stop her from scolding the boy regardless.
It was earlier than Hailey would normally be up and out of bed on a Saturday morning , but with her plans being to bring loukoumades to the picnic she was going on later that morning, she knew she was going to have to make them fresh for them to taste their best. Adam wasn't one to be up any earlier than midday either; apparently the smell had been a great motivator as he fell into the chair across on the other side of the kitchen island. With it being only 8:30am, it was no surprise to either of the teenagers when the sound of Adam's father coming home from yet another night shift echoed through the otherwise (relatively) quiet home.
"Ooh!" Bob's voice could be heard from the front foyer as the his keys jingled against the door at being hung up. "Hailey, are you cooking?"
Hailey couldn't help but giggle slightly at the fact that he knew that it was her right away.
"Yeah, I'm making loukoumades!"
"She's making loukoumades and won't let me have any!"
"Excuse me!? I told you I was making extras for you, but Mr Impatient over here decided he couldn't wait a few minutes and was just going to start stealing them instead!"
"I did not steal them! It's only stealing if you see me do it!"
"First of all, that's not how that works and second of all? I fucking did see you!"
"No you didn't."
"Yes, I did!"
"Nah. I couldn't see you, so you couldn't see me. That's the rules."
"Remind me how you couldn't see me? I'm right in front of you!"
"I closed my eyes."
Hailey rolled her eyes in playful annoyance as Bob finally entered her view, the man baring a small smirk as he listened to the two teenagers bicker lightly.
The man shrugged off his Chicago Police Department jacket, draping it over the arm of the couch (something he would definitely be hearing about later from his wife) before making his way over to the kitchen island and standing beside his son.
"What's the special occasion, Hails?" Bob asked, gesturing towards the mini mountain of donuts she had made. "Not that you need one, but — still."
Before the girl even got the chance to respond, Adam's mouth had opened and spewed out a response almost instantaneously.
"Hailey's going on a date."
"I am not going on a date," the girl huffed, quietly flipping off Adam as she pulled her attention to the man who had originally posed the question.
"My friend Jay asked me if I would go with him on a picnic that he's only being dragged on because his brother wanted to go on a date with his girlfriend, and he didn't want to third wheel. Their mom would only let Will go if Jay went too, so he figured that if he asked me we could enjoy some nice food as well as work on our Lit assignment."
"In other words, it's a date." Adam yet again had to duck to avoid Hailey's backhand as he grinned mischievously.
"Shut up and call Kim or something, make more kissy faces and heart eyes at each other — I don't care."
The boy quickly pursed his lips shut as his face reddened, shooting Hailey a glare over at her. However, he didn't stay quiet for long; as soon as Hailey dumped out the last of the loukoumades that had finished frying into the bowl, the boy immediately reaching for one and subsequently earning himself a nice burn on two of his fingers. Dropping it back into the bowl, Hailey watched with a half-amused-half-concerned expression as she sighed deeply before grabbing a cup, filling it with ice from the fridge and wordlessly handing it to the boy who dipped his fingers into it.
"I don't want to say karma, but — it's a bitch, isn't it?"
Adam only flipped Hailey off with his non-burnt middle finger as the girl glanced up at Bob with a mischievous yet exasperated smirk, the man making his way around the kitchen island to be on the same side as Hailey. While Hailey readied the syrups, she watched the man's every movement, carefully examining his facial expression as she tried to quietly read him. He had his serious face on; Hailey wasn't sure she liked it too much.
"He give you or your mother any trouble this morning?" Bob asked the blonde haired girl gently, his eyes scanning Hailey's blue ones on the off chance that she was about to lie.
"I left before he got home."
Bob only nodded lightly; he had expected as much. "I made sure he was sober before he went home, Hailey. He could have driven had he had a car that wasn't in the impound lot currently. He'll get it back this afternoon, but for now — he can taxi his way around."
Hailey didn't say anything, instead opting to sigh lightly to herself as she glanced down at her feet. She knew it wasn't his fault, that he was only looking out for her, but she hated that her relatively good mood had been dampened by the mention of her pathetic excuse for a father. She missed the days when she could somehow separate the times she'd climb on his back while he pretended to be whatever she wanted him to be from the man that would terrorise the whole family to the point where Hailey would hide in her closet, sobbing. Now as she got older, all she could see was a manipulative monster.
"You need a ride, Hails?" Bob could see the drop in Hailey's mood, guilt bubbling up inside of him as he tried to rectify the situation. "I can take you to your friend's house if you need. Or you can take the car if you want."
"No thanks —" Hailey bought her eyes up to meet Bob's once more. "They're going to swing by here and pick me up on the way."
Bob nodded with a smile, glancing between her and Adam before gesturing towards the staircase around the corner as he bid goodnight to the two teenagers. Yes, the sun had barely come up, but working a double night shift often had the ability to tire out even the greatest insomniacs. Finishing off the last touches of her loukoumades before packing them into two separate containers — one to take with her and one for the Ruzek's (cough, Adam) to devour — Hailey headed around the other side of the kitchen island and took a seat beside her friend with a small smirk playing at her lips. She couldn't help but stifle a laugh at the fingers still dunked in a cup of ice, much to Adam's dismay to tried (and failed) to childishly kick her foot without slipping off of his own seat.
"You know, this morning has taught me a valuable lesson, Ruz."
Adam arched an eyebrow challengingly. "Is it that you're a coldhearted sadist?"
"No, but good job for using such big words!"
"I hate you."
"Fine, no loukoumades for you—"
"Wait, no! I take it back!"
"That's what I thought," Hailey smirked even more this time. "Anyway, what I was saying before I was so rudely interrupted — I've learned that if I want you up before midday, all I have to do is cook and you'll come running."
"And I learnt that all it takes to get you to cook my favourite food ever is to have you go on a date."
"It's not a date!"
"Is so!"
"Is not!"
"Uh huh!"
"Shut up before I tell Kim you like her."
In one swift movement, Adam reached into his cup of ice and pulled out a handful of the tiny ice cubes, dropping the cold blocks down the back of Hailey's shirt looking all too smug as the girl let out a disgruntled half-groan-half-squeal. Before anything else could be said, the sound of Hailey's phone buzzing indicated Jay's arrival as the girl slid off of her seat and flicked the back of Adam's head teasingly before calling out a goodbye and heading out the door.
❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄❄
Hailey wasn't exactly sure where Jay's brother had taken them, but wherever it was, she didn't care. The view was gorgeous and Natalie, Will's girlfriend, had bought along an entire picnic blanket and an assortment of sandwiches which neither Hailey or Jay could say they were mad about.
"Oh my god, these are amazing!" Natalie grinned over at Hailey as she placed a golden greek donut into her mouth. "Did you make them?"
Hailey nodded bashfully. "Yeah, just this morning. Lucky there's any left — Adam was helping himself to his body weight in loukoumades."
Will and Jay laughed heartily, knowing exactly what Adam was like while Natalie only chuckled with a smile.
"What's the glaze you've got over it?"
"These ones are a pretty simple honey glaze —" Hailey gestured to the container on her left before moving to the one on her right. "And these one's are a nutella glaze. They're the only ones I know how to make. My mom knows how to make a bunch more — she’s like magic."
After the group had a bite to eat, it wasn't long before Will and Natalie left Hailey and Jay alone, the older couple giggling in a way that Hailey knew all too well as they headed down to the water's edge. Jay couldn't help but snort lightly to himself as his brother walked in the opposite direction; he seemed greatly amused by the whole situation.
"The fact he hasn't found a way to fuck this up yet is baffling, honestly," Jay started, piquing Hailey's interest. "He's a walking disaster, Hailey. I'm telling you."
"I'm sure he's not that bad. I mean, he seems like a nice guy." Hailey's defence landed upon deaf ears as Jay quickly unraveled her words.
"He's only got the best intensions, but — god — he's such an idiot." Jay sighed lightly, causing the blonde to chuckle as she reached for a sandwich.
On the few outings that Jay had taken her on, Hailey couldn't help but notice that Jay had impeccable taste in setting. Her quietly-chaotic nature paired well with his calm and secluded plans; she felt warm every time that she was near him. Though Adam was (and always would be) her best friend, she would be lying if she said she hadn't been enjoying her time with her literature partner.
"How do you find these places, Jay?" Hailey asked, one knee tucked comfortably into her chest as she glanced over at the dark haired boy. "They're almost — I don't know — ethereal? It feels like nobody can find us for miles, but not in the 'holy shit we're going to die' way. More like the 'this moment feels infinite' way."
Jay considered her words for a moment, his face screwed up in thought as he dissected each sound and syllable in a split second. For a second, Hailey had second guessed herself — had everything she had just said come out ineligibly?
"Sorry. Sometimes the words in my head don't translate to my mouth and everything comes out weird and —"
"No, it made sense." Jay held a finger up to shush Hailey, the boy still in thought. "It actually made perfect sense. But, answer me this, Miss Upton — why do places like this appeal to you so much? Is it the quiet, or the stillness, or. . .?"
To Hailey, the answer was simple.
"The escapism."
This piqued Jay's interest, the man tilting his head with curiosity. A small smile caused his lips to curl up simultaneously as he gestured for the girl to continue.
"There aren't a lot of things I can control. I can't control the people around me or what they do, and even though it's hard to accept sometimes, the only thing that makes it easier is escaping. Being somewhere where the world just — stops — for a minute or two . . . it tricks me into thinking I have more control than I actually do, and god knows I need that sometimes."
"I never took you to be the control freak type, you know," Jay joked lightheartedly. "Perfectionist, maybe. But not controlling."
Hailey sighed a little, her teeth sinking into her bottom lip. "Sometimes to keep your sanity you need to at least pretend the ground isn't crumbling around you."
Silence fell upon the two teenagers for a few seconds before Jay spoke up.
"For the record, if you ever need an escape in the form of a human being — I'm here."
"You know, I think I'd like that." Hailey smiled warmly at Jay, their eyes locked together. "I think I'd like that a lot."
By the time Will and Natalie came back, Hailey and Jay had their respective notebooks filled with little things about each other. After weeks of getting to know the brown haired boy, Hailey was finally ready to write her poem.

After a tough case, the team had gone to Molly’s for drinks. Y/n, Kim, and Hailey had drank a little more than usual and suggested that they all go dancing at a club down the road. The guys all agreed to go along, some more eagerly than others. Adam and Kevin were keeping up with the girls drink wise and were game right away while Jay mostly just went to keep an eye on their friends. He’d be lying if he said he wasn’t specifically keeping an eye on Y/N.
Y/n and Jay had an unspoken flirtation-ship going on ever since she was brought up to intelligence a few months after Hailey. Any time things started to get a little too close or beyond just flirting, Jay would back away. Y/N realized this was probably a result of everything she had heard about him and Erin. However it still drove her insane. Early on she understood that he was probably just hurt and having commitment issues, but after over a year of the constant hot and cold she was over it.
Honestly, she was far from over it, and it was probably the reason she had let go a bit more than usual tonight. She was trying to be over it though. However the past week had been extraordinarily annoying. Jay and Y/N had gone out for coffee after a tough day earlier in the case, they had started to talk about how glad they were that they had gotten to know each other. Jay had touched her hand and started to lean in to kiss her, suddenly he caught him self and pulled away. He told her he was sorry but he had to go, insisting on awkwardly walking her home first. He then proceeded to barely talk to her for the rest of the case.
That was 2 days ago and she felt completely lost not knowing how to talk to him, and completely broken from being basically rejected. She had spent the whole night at Molly’s laughing and joking around with Kim and Kevin. To be honest Jay only noticed how much she’d been laughing with Kevin. Jay had been a mess the past few days too, not knowing what to do anytime he was around Y/N. Of Course he had wanted to kiss her, he wanted to never stop kissing her. Hell he wanted to call her his, but he was terrified she didn’t want the same thing or that it would ruin their friendship. However he couldn’t think of any of that now as he walked down the street to the club watching Y/N hanging on Kevin’s arm as she walked. He was realizing that maybe it was time to stop ignoring his feelings, but now it seemed like it could be too late.
Jay was obviously not as covert in his anger as he thought, because Adam bumped his arm as they walked. “Yo man, I’m not trying to break up a brawl tonight. Put the fight face away, she’s just having fun with her FRIEND.” He said trying to calm him down. “Yeah, ‘friends’. Sure.” Jay scoffed, eyes narrowed at Y/N and Kevin. Adam laughed, “Well is there any reason they couldn’t be more than friends? Have you actually made a move?” he asked pointedly “Don’t go there man” Jay answered through gritted teeth. “Why not dude? You’ve obviously fallen for this girl, and its not a new thing. So when are you gonna stop screwing around and tell her how you feel? You know she feels the same way.” Adam says, hoping his friend will finally listen. “Yeah, cause that looks like a girl who has feelings for me.” Jay scoffs again as he motions towards you laughing with Kevin. “Dude, There is no reasoning with you!” Adam says, giving up for the moment.
Y/N enters the club with the group, glad she has Kevin to help distract her tonight so she isn’t sulking about Jay. Kevin and Kim know her whole situation very well and promised to make her forget about it for the night. So far they’ve done a great job and she hasn’t noticed Jay’s angry glares, but Kevin has.
Once they get drinks the whole group goes right to the dance floor, everyone except for Jay. Y/N was dancing her heart out, enjoying finally having time to relax with her friends. She was mostly dancing with Kim, but when she stepped off the dance floor to sip her drink Y/N took Kevin’s hand goofily and started dancing with him.
Everyone could see it was merely friendly, except for Jay of course. Kevin caught his eye as Y/N spun around in front of laughing. Kevin was starting to worry that this was going to cause some trouble. He didn’t want to bring her attention to Jay, but he also didn’t want Jay trying fight him. “Hey Y/N/N not to piss ya off, but your boy is looking mighty grumpy over there girl” Kevin laughs out. “Yeah, well if he wants to dance with me then he can come ask me, but we all know that won’t happen.” Y/N said glancing over to see a fuming Halstead. “Alright alright, I’m just sayin’”. He says putting his hands up defensively.
Y/N looks over again and sees him angrily taking a swig of his beer. Her heart tightens seeing his anger. She wished he’d just suck it up and either admit he has feelings or cut her loose, because this was driving her crazy. She huffs, realizing she needs to just go at least try to talk to him. She walks over to the bar and sits down on the stool next to him. “Hey there Mr. Grumpy, Why aren’t you over there dancing with us?” she says trying her best to sound upbeat. “Nah, I’m good here. Your having an awful lot of fun over there with out me anyway.” He bites out. Y/N takes a deep breath deciding it couldn’t get much more awkward so she might as well make her move. She feels mostly sobered up by now, having only drank water for the past hour and a half, but the liquid courage is definitely still helping her. “Jay, “she said putting her hand on his forearm getting his attention “I’ve been settling for them all night waiting for you to ask me to dance. Sooooooo when you’re ready to finally make your move… you know where I’ll be.” She said trying her best to seem confident. Turning to walk away before she could see his shocked reaction. She hoped that was enough to finally get him to make a choice, and now she was going to go dance and pretend her heart wasn’t beating out of her chest.
Y/N was back on the dance floor, facing away from the bar where she left Jay. She had her eyes closed, dancing like a fool with Hailey and Kim when she felt a hand gently land on her hip. She swung her head around hoping not to have to deck a stranger. She came face to face with a smirking Jay. He offered his other hand out for her to take. “Consider this my move Y/L/N. Dance with me?” he said in a low voice. She couldn’t help but smirk as she took his hand. “I thought you’d never ask Halstead.” she said with a giant smile. He spun her away and back into his chest “Yeah, well it’s about time I stop acting like an idiot and be honest with you.” He confesses “Well then be honest with me Jay. What is this?” she asks, trying her best to continue looking into his eyes. Her heart, beating record speed. “This is me asking you to forgive me Y/N, and to give me a chance.” He breathes out as he reaches out to tuck a strand of hair behind her ear, letting his hand linger on the side of her face.
She nods as she leans into his touch. “Yeah?” he asks smiling, as she nods again. “So will you go on a date with me then? Jay officially asks. Not able to hold back his smile. “Hell yes!” She laughs not hiding her happiness. “but I have a request!” she says with a smirk. “And what’s that beautiful?” He says, loving the way his compliment makes her blush. “We call this our first date so I don’t have to wait to kiss that handsome face of yours anymore!” she says as she reaches up to touch his cheek. “Deal sweetheart, I think we’ve waited long enough” he agrees with a chuckle as Y/N bites her bottom lip nodding.
With that Jay leans in, closing the distance between them. Y/N sighs, finally feeling his lips on hers as she lets him pull her closer with a hand on her hip. She moves her hands to tangle in the short hair at the nape of his neck. The kiss is sweet and perfect but passionate, tasting like beer and Jay. He pulls away reluctantly but keeps her close, leaning his forehead against hers. “I really, really like you Y/N, I’m sorry I’ve been such an ass lately.” He whispers “I really, really like you too Jay. I think I can forgive you, but I might need another kiss to be sure.” She says with a smirk. “That I can do!” he says leaning back in for a shorter kiss this time. Interrupted by their cheering friends who couldn’t keep their excitement quiet any longer. The girls run to hug her, pulling her away from Jay. Adam pats his friend on the back and Kevin shakes his hand and says “Thanks for not killing me man, I’d never get in your way with her.” Jay laughs and pats his friend on the back telling him not to worry about it as he catches y/n’s eye while she dances with her friends. She sends him a wink that he returns. Both loving the feeling of knowing they finally have each other.

Queen Elsa: It changes depending on the week.
no-ah: so she’s mysterious
Nat: Uh hey guys guess who I just ran into
[Nat has sent an image to the chat]
Ethan Choi: Where is this?
Nat: The gas station by the hospital. He’s arguing with the cashier about the price of discount vodka.
Ethan Choi: I’m on my way to pick him up.
-
FreeWilly: so that’s alarming
Ethan Choi: He’s not drunk, just really upset.
April: Praying for you both <3
-
Dr. Lanik: Mandatory substance abuse presentation in the projection room today.
Queen Elsa: Isn’t that dramatic?
Dr. Lanik: The last doctor of ours before who had a drinking problem jumped off the roof of the hospital. Given that Dr. Marcel is also struggling, the execs want a presentation about substance abuse and treatment and rehab options covered by our insurance.
Ethan Choi: Yeah I’m gonna be at home with Crockett actually so I won’t be going
Dr. Lanik: This is mandatory.
connor: ok boomer
Dr. Lanik: Number one, we’re the same age. I’m actually pretty sure you’re older than me. Number two, this isn’t a joke.
connor: does he have… a heart?
Dr. Lanik: Very funny.
Maggie<3: I actually do think we should all go, that way if somebody on staff (other than Crockett) is struggling, they can get the support they need
Nat: ^
April: ^^
Dr. Lanik: Half of you will be paged before lunch, the other half afterward. Thank you.
-
Crockett: jsyk im not mad at you
Dr. Bekker (Blonde): Are you okay?
Crockett: i will be.

Yuletide Letter 2017
Fandoms Selected:
Call the Midwife ( Phyllis Crane)
Chicago Med ( Sarah Reese, Will Halstead)
Dawson’s Creek ( Joey/Pacey)
Twister ( Jo Harding, Bill Harding)
Jurassic Park ( Ian Malcolm)
Doctor Who RPF ( Billie Piper, David Tennant)
Dear Yuletide Writer,
Thank you for writing for me! This is my second year participating and I am excited for what the year will bring.
Below you will find general requests and fandom specific suggestions. Please don’t feel like you have to write one of my ideas.
General Likes/Kinks/Tropes: Sticking to canon is great but I enjoy a well written AU. Pretend/Fake relationships, sharing a bed, stuck in a confined space, end of the world scenarios, UST, slow burn, What-If also have a strange obsession with medical fiction and natural disaster movies.
General DNW: Established relationships, hard NC-17, character death, BDSM, mpreg, incest, bestiality, hard kink, non-con/dub-con, poly/threesome/orgies, a/b/o
Call the Midwife ( Phyllis Crane)
I LOVE Call the Midwife. It combines my love of all things British with my medical obsession. I do enjoy all the characters but there is something about Nurse Crane that intrigues me.
Anything to do with Nurse Crane in her younger years
Nurse Crane going for one of her drives and coming across an interesting medical situation
Nurse Crane finally meeting someone where it actually works out
DNW: Anything involving miscarriage, infant loss, terminal illness of child, death of child
Chicago Med ( Sarah Reese, Will Halstead )
This is my guilty pleasure show. I have a huge thing for medical drama/comedy/books etc. I love Sarah and Will has grown on me a ton this past season as well!
Ideas:
Contagious CDC level disease comes into the ED ( I am a little obsessed with epidemics)
Sarah develops a very inappropriate crush on patient or other doctor and is awkward about it
Sarah goes on different specialty rotations and finds out there are a lot of things she would not enjoy
Sarah decided to put herself on an online dating site and ends up on some hilarious dates
Will and Sarah keep running into each other in the strangest places.
Ships: I don’t ship Sarah or Will with anyone in particular. If you want to write a shippy fic about the two of them that is fine but not necessary.
Dawson’s Creek ( Joey/Pacey)
Disclaimer: This request has not changed much from my request last year. Why? I will always want MORE.
Pacey. Pacey. Pacey. I love me some Pacey. This show has been over for a long time but it will always be a part of me. Joey and Pacey are my jam. I loved how Pacey fell in love with Joey first and god some of his lines just turn me into goo.
Ideas:
More Pacey pining after Joey.
A missing scene perhaps?
Any fun trope: Camping, fake relationship, stuck in a confined space, a hurricane comes and they must hunker down.
Really any AU scenario: he’s a doctor - she’s a patient, she runs a bed and breakfast the electricity goes out and they are stuck there all night
DNW: Joey having feelings for Dawson.
Twister ( Jo Harding, Bill Harding)
Why? This was my gateway into my natural disaster movie addiction. Really anything with the two of them storm chasing. Prequel or Sequel.
DNW: Character death.
Jurassic Park ( Ian Malcolm)
I have a pin that says ,“ Future Ex-Mrs. Malcolm Club”.
Seriously though, I love Jurassic Park and I can’t get enough of Ian Malcolm.
DNW: Character death
Doctor Who RPF ( Billie Piper, David Tennant)
I have barely started dipping my toes into the world that is RPF. I am not sure yet how I feel about shipping fic between these two. Honestly, I would love to read about them just hanging out and having fun together. Other actors in the fandom are welcome as well. A little UST is fine and welcome/
IDEAS:
Pranking each other
It’s one of those days where no one can get their lines out right
Some sort of natural disaster or medical quarantine hits the set ( see how I snuck that obsession in here too)
DNW: Shippy fic beyond some UST or pining, nothing too dark or depressing
I hope this helps some! Thank you!
