I pulled all my writing off g docs a while back during one of the many privacy violation updates they had and the only thing I'm actually bothered by is how I can't pull up a fic and start writing on my phone while I'm out and about or don't have time for my computer. I want to get some bits down for an Unposted Middle-school Fanfic Overhaul but I also have to leave for work soon.

Considering Virgilius and Battler went to high school together in the ‘A Fate Outside the Catbox’ fic, what would yourethoughts be on an AU where, in the forgeries/gameboard, Erika is not being introduced as a stranger to Battler, but as his upperclassman’s sister?

Let's see... I think it would be really interesting because Erika is meant to be a total outsider to the board, and how much of her is the real-life dead girl and how much of her is Bernkastel's OC/self insert is vague. Giving her a connection to Battler not only confirms her connection to the real-life Furudo Erika, but also means that, as much as she's an outsider to October 4th, she isn't a completely new character.

It would also mean that Battler might have a different reaction to her: in End, he's very hostile to her in the meta, and he's also often working against her on the board as well. But in this AU, both the meta and board Battlers would be connected to her through Virgilius, giving her an "in" with Battler and the Ushiromiya family as a whole. Being an acquaintance one knew beforehand is very different from being a complete stranger, even if it's a distant connection depending on the specifics (for example, if he's only ever heard about her and never actually met her).

So for gameboard Battler, I think it means he would be nicer to Erika, and Erika's piece might be kinder to him (or maybe overall) as well. As much as meta and piece Erika seem less fluid than with other characters, there still has to be some separation, and I think it would show the most there.

Erika is a very distrustful person, so I'm not sure if she would confide in Battler about Bernkastel's treatment of her and her feelings about it - she's often in denial about it even to herself. It might mean that she hesitates more when it comes to actions directly against him, such as the logic error plot of Episode 6 and the wedding. I've always thought that Erika and Virgilius are close siblings, and that Virgilius and Battler would be good friends, so Erika might hesitate more or not be as overt in her sexual assault undertones when it comes to marrying Battler, treating it more like a symbolic marriage to obtain power over the gameboard. In the first place, her desire to torment Battler seems to come from a desire to torment Beatrice and to please her master by doing so. So she might focus more of her attentions towards what she'll do with Beatrice after marrying Battler instead of being overly cruel to him.

I do think that it means that in Episode 8, there would be less outright hostility towards Erika and more appealing to her on the basis of Virgilius. She and Ange would be inverses of each other, where Erika is the sister lost to a brother and Ange is the sister who lost a brother. It would probably come up between Ange and Erika as well in their discussions.

I don't think it would be a change that would entirely upend the plot, but it would change some aspects of it and add new things to explore.

Summary:

“No! Logan look,” she said. “He likes you and you like him. You don’t need a list or a plan or schematics for this. Just walk up to him and ask him out before you hesitate so much that he thinks you don’t like him anymore.”

Logan’s eyes widened. “Is that something that can happen.”

“Oh god, this is hopeless.”

How is Logan so good at, but simultaneously so bad at this?

This is a one-shot dealing with events set before my story Sometimes Labels Fail set a few months after The Things We Never Mentioned.

Notes: Superhero AU (doesn’t matter for this one... again), Logan being dumb but it the sweetest way possible.

This was supposed to come out later this week, but the mini fic I was writing to release today ended up... not being a mini fic. So, I shuffled around my release plans a bit and you get this now!

It was almost 3am and Logan was still in his office. He really should just go home. There was no way he and Lia were going to be able to solve this problem tonight. Lia wasn’t even looking at the problem on the chalkboard anymore, instead she had pressed the chalk against the board longways and was turning it slowly to make a fan shape on the board.

Logan took a drink of his room temperature coffee. “We could try integrating it.”

“No.”

“You’re probably right.” Logan tilted his head back and closed his eyes pretending to be deep in thought, but really he just let his brain drift. “Lia,” he said.

“Hmm?”

“Can I ask your advice on something not related to math.”

“Fucking please do.”

“It’s about Patton.”

She didn’t even pause. “My advice is, ask him out.”

Logan paused and opened his eyes to look at her. “Er well… Yes.”

She suddenly looked more awake than she had in hours. “No really? Yes! It’s about time!”

Logan rolled his eyes. “Your enthusiasm about my romantic interests is absurd… but useful in this specific case.”

She sat up straight and folded her hands in her lap like a particularly interested school child during story time. “Please continue.”

“I have decided that I would like to pursue a romantic relationship with Patton, and I am currently researching the best strategy to convince him of my adequacy as a prospective partner.”

“Research?” Lia asked. “Oh god, please tell me you didn’t made a list.”

“I am simply inquiring after your advice concerning rather you believe Patton would be more inclined to understand love language in poetry or flowers.”

“Logan you don’t need to prove your ‘adequacy’ or whatever. Just ask him out.”

“Certainly,” Logan said. “Flowers or poetry.”

“Logan you’re not listening,” Lia complained.

“I assure you I am. I’m even taking notes.” He turned the paper around for her to see.

“‘Lia does not seem to have an opinion on flowers or poetry. Seems to suggest a bold approach,’ Logan you’ve got to be kidding me.”

He sat back and flipped back a few pages in the notebook. “I have interviewed many people on the topic but seeing as you have actually met Patton in person, I thought your perspective would be useful despite the certain ridicule that would come from the question.”

“Logan please, please tell me you didn’t make a list.”

Logan didn’t reply. He had. He had made a list. He’d done more than just make a list. He’d created a whole new file designation specifically for Patton and Patton related things. He now had a light blue binder which contained the list as well as the drafts and research notes on matching light blue paper as well as a picture Patton had doodled on a napkin to give to him. What else was he supposed to do?

Over the past couple of months, he’d done research in the form of interviews as well as non-fiction and fiction reading, drafted the list, done more research, and edited the list. It still wasn’t good enough. He was missing something. He knew he was missing something, but he couldn’t figure it out. He was hoping Lia would be more helpful.

Clearly, he was mistaken as she just groaned. “Logan…”

“Never mind.”

“No! Logan look,” she said. “He likes you and you like him. You don’t need a list or a plan or schematics for this. Just walk up to him and ask him out before you hesitate so much that he thinks you don’t like him anymore.”

Logan’s eyes widened. “Is that something that can happen.”

“Oh god, this is hopeless.”

“I was unaware of the possibility of a time limit on this assignment.”

“That’s not. No. That’s not what I’m saying Logan. Please don’t freak out. This isn’t homework!”

“I’m not freaking out Lia,” he said calmly even though his mind was racing.

“Logan, I know that look,” Lia said, “that’s the Logan’s pretending he’s okay, but he’s actually about to go and break down in a closet look.”

Logan waved her off and gathered up his bag. “Thank you for your input; you have given me a lot to think about.”

“No, please stop thinking!”

“I must go.”

 Logan had meant to finish editing his list the night before but had fallen asleep almost immediately after getting home from the office. He woke at around 10am with a sore neck. He looked at the list. He should switch task 7 and 8 he decided. He wrote out one more copy of the list with the edit and then stared at the list again. There were 25 list items the last one being to ask Patton on a date. It wasn’t perfect, but… perhaps it was good enough. He bit his lip. Some of the tasks would take more effort, but luckily Logan had already started working on preparations for the third step which was to express interests in things the subject found important. The first two steps were to express a desire to spend time with the subject and demonstrate an ability to notice the subject’s likes and dislikes. With the preparation he had done, he was certain he could get through the first three steps today.

Decided, he jumped to his feet. Patton often came to ‘The Hideout’ at around 11:30am for lunch on these days. If he moved fast, he might be able to catch him before-hand and ask him if he’d like to have lunch with him.

…

He should go take a shower and brush his teeth first.

After cleaning himself up and picking out one of his nicer casual outfits, he headed to the hospital. He wasn’t sure where to go, so he just headed to the admission area for the hospital emergency room. “Hello,” Logan said to the receptionist. “I was wondering if Patton Sanders has left for lunch yet.” The man behind the counter blinked at him. “He’s a surgeon here.”

“I know who he is,” he replied slowly. “I’ll um, go get someone to check.”

Logan nodded and stepped away from the counter. The receptionist walked away and then returned after a moment.

A few minutes later, Patton walked up to the reception desk from the other side looking rather confused. He spoke briefly to the receptionist who gestured to him. Patton turned, lighting up a bit when his eyes fell on him, though he still looked a bit confused. “Logan,” he said. “What are you doing here?”

Logan stepped back up to the reception desk. “I was wondering if you would like to have lunch. I know you usually go to ‘The Hideout’ and we end up eating together anyway, but you don’t always, and I wanted to intentionally make plans with you. It doesn’t have to be at ‘The Hideout’ either. Of course, only if you aren’t busy and you want to.”

“I do,” Patton said. “I do want to, uh, but,” he glanced behind himself back into the ER. “We’ve been pretty busy, and I don’t think I’ll be able to take a long enough lunch to go out. I was just going to grab a sandwich in the cafeteria.”

“That’s fine,” Logan said. “We can make plans for another day.”

Patton bit his lip. “You can join me in the cafeteria if you want,” he offered. “I’ll um, only have 15 minutes though and the food isn’t great.”

“15 minutes is fine,” Logan replied.

He smiled brightly at that. “Give me five minutes,” he requested.

“Of course,” Logan said. “I’ll just sit over there.” Patton dashed off. It was closer to 10 minutes, but Logan didn’t mind even when the receptionist kept giving him looks he couldn’t understand or when a few nurses stopped by to peer at him curiously from over the counter.

Patton was still wearing the doctor’s coat when he came back to the waiting room area. He smiled when he saw Logan and grabbed his arm to guide him to the elevator. The cafeteria was on the top floor of the hospital. Patton warned him off of getting the spaghetti and he ended up with a grilled cheese sandwich and soup while Patton just purchased a premade cold cut sandwich from one of the refrigerators.

The cafeteria was crowded at this time of day, but Patton directed him to a more secluded part of it. His eyes kept flashing at the clock, but he still smiled at Logan.

“It bought you a brownie,” Logan said pushing it at him. “I’m not sure of its quality compared to the ones at “The Hideout,” but I know it is your favorite dessert so hopefully it suffices.

He took the saran wrapped dessert with an almost startled expression. “Thank you,” he said and then looked back up at Logan. “It’s good to see you. I-I’ve had a stressful morning and was sad I wouldn’t be able to go out for lunch today. Thanks for being willing to eat down here with me.”

“I’m glad I decided to come today then. Thanks, are not necessary. I enjoy talking with you no matter the environment.”

A bit of a blush bloomed on Patton’s cheeks and he cleared his throat. “What would you like to talk about then?” he asked.

“How about,” Logan began, “antibody diversity and histocompatibility systems.”

A strange look crossed Patton’s face. “Did... Logan did you look up my research papers?”

“I,” he didn’t know why he felt compelled to blush. “Yes, I did. You don’t have a background in mathematics or physics so I thought I would investigate your interests so we could have something to talk about. They were very well written.”

A pause. “You read my research papers.”

“Yes,” he said. “There was a lot of terminology I had to look up, but I believe I have enough of a working knowledge to hold a conversation.”

“You,” he stopped and looked at Logan with an intense but achingly tender expression that figuratively stole Logan’s breath. It lasted for a long moment and Logan felt trapped by his gaze in the best way possible. “Would you like to go on a date with me?”

“Yes,” Logan replied breathlessly without even a thought. Patton gave him a dazzling smile and bit his lip, looking away slightly. Logan’s brain restarted once he wasn’t held captive by that strange look in Patton’s eye. Wait, wait, he’d had a plan! He’d just ruined the plan!

“So then,” Patton said somewhat bashful, “what would you want to do on the date.”

Logan scrambled to mentally scratch off 22 list items until he found the ideas he’d come up with for once he’d procured a date. It wasn’t an edited list yet, but at least it was something. He was glad he planned so far in advance. “Midtown park perhaps,” Logan suggested. “There is a small place that serves pasta and an ice cream shop nearby. We could have dinner and then walk through the park. You’ve mentioned that you enjoy ravioli and the restaurant I’m suggesting is well known for the dish according to three articles in two different newspapers in the last 18 months.”

Patton titled his head with a small smile. “You’ve put some thought into this haven’t you?” he asked.

“I…” Logan said, “tend to be a planner.”

Patton reached over to place his hand on Logan’s. “I’m glad,” he said. Logan turned his hand over so their fingers could lace together. They only had 7 minutes to eat once they remembered their food and it was quite bland, but Logan would surely never regret it.

What expectations do you hold towards your plotting partner: I like to have either a specific relationship we are trying to cultivate, a specific goal we are working towards, or a vague plot outline. (I do not mind if any of this diverges once we actually start writing.) We can take some time to work this out! But please be honest with me. We’re working together towards a common goal, and if you can’t tell me what you want, I can’t help you.

How do you usually plot with others, do you give input or leave most work towards your partner?: Hmmm usually I just fling a whole bunch of idea at someone till we find one we like. (I’m a bit disorganized). I want it to be a 50/50 split on ideas. Sometimes i just want to do some small ic chatter too to see how our muses interact, sometimes I find that this is the best place to start!

When a partner drops the thread, do you wish to know?:   YES / NO / DEPENDS. - And why?: RP is a fun hobby! I don’t care if we drop a thread but I like to know so I’m not waiting around wasting time coming up with more material for you if that thread isn’t going anywhere.

If you drop threads of ours without telling me, I will block you. It’s non-negotiable. If you don’t respect me and my time enough to tell me you want to drop a thread then we won’t be getting along. It’s never a PROBLEM if my partner wants to drop, just the fact that they’re not able to communicate with me. - Will you tell your partner?:   YES / NO / DEPENDS.

Is communication in the rpc important to you?  YES / NO. - And why?: I believe its THE MOST important part of RP. I want to get to know the muns behind the muse. This is a hobby and something I do in my downtime. So I want to know that my partners are having as much fun as I am. It also makes it much easier to work through any issues, as well as generate new ideas and plot and content! I feel like the better the muns get along, the easier it is to write!

Also, the more we chat and get comfortable with each other, the better the experience is. The more we can write creatively without fear of judgement and the more we can explore not just our own and each others muses.

If there’s ever a problem, let me know. I’d much rather have a chat the deal with drama and childish attempts at public humiliation. Most of the time the problem is a misunderstanding that can be realized with a talk :D!

- Are you okay with absolute honesty, even if it may means hearing something negative about you and/or portrayal?: As long as you’re respectful and not needlessly mean you can tell me anything. Just know that depending on the criticism (ie if its about how I portray my muse) it’s ultimately up to me how or if I implement changes. I believe everyone is constantly learning, and I love to hear feed back.

- Do you think you can handle such a situation in a mature way?  YES / NO.

Why do you rp again, is there a goal?: For me, my biggest reason for doing this is to explore my muse. I want to develop relationships, both good and bad, explore how they came to be the way they are, and see what happens when I put them in new situations.

Shinigami are harder to write with ngl. I need a reason for Grimmjow to be interacting with them beyond ‘well... is he ever in the SS?’ I need motivations!

What Type of Starters do you prefer?: Either something with a good dialogue or an emotional hook. I needs something to play with that can be taken in a few directions. If I’m being railroaded I tend to get annoyed and frustrated.

If it’s just a one liner, its hard to go wrong (unless you provide me 0 context). If its a longer pre-plotted starter, you gotta give me more and actually start telling the story.

What Type of Starters do you dislike, or can’t work with?: I don’t like being railroaded (coincidentally neither do my muses) if you try to set the genre without approaching me first (particularly if its a romance or smut kinda vibe) i will almost certainly do the opposite of what you want and then neither of us will be happy. If my partner doesn’t cooperate WITH ME and it feels like every reply is a battle, then I’m not going to be happy about it.

Sometimes stuff falls flat even if there is multiple paragraphs or replies. Not anyone fault! But I try to kill it early if there’s no movement.

What type of characters catch your interest the most?: I’ll be honest with you. I’m more interested in the mun behind the muse then the muse themselves. A Great story can come from any characters, the mun and the brain behind it that breaths life and depth into their characters is more important and interesting for me. Not only do the characters need to have an interesting dynamic, we need to get along as muns too!

As for interesting characters specifically..... I like characters with depth that are driven my muns who *want* to explore that depth. Help me create moments of vulnerability! Muses who are more capable of calling my muses on their bullshit is also something I look for. Backbone! Fire! Passion! Ambition! Fear! Growth! Vulnerability! Bring it ON!

What type of characters catch your interest the least?: Romance only characters. I know shipping is fun. But if that is all your character has to offer.... I don’t really vibe with super cutsie characters in general. I try to give everyone a chance but if we have a few threads and there’s nothing new happening I get bored. If a character lacks visible depth I struggle. Make the muse your own and let me see that!

I also struggle with really asocial characters and really guarded characters (I know, this is a little hypocritical of me, but I do try to force Grimmjow into positions of vulnerability). It interacting with your muse is too much of an uphill battle, I’m out! Same with any characters who don’t grow and develop. The point is to deepen relationships, and if there’s no continuity then the plot stagnates and I don’t feel there is much more to explore.

What are your strong aspects as rp partner?:  I love angst. I love it. I also love redemption arcs and facilitating friendships and relationships. (Not necessarily romantic). I write generally pretty well and I like to think i have a lot of ideas I can shower you in!

I’m also very open and comfortable with writing more mature or darker themes. My muse is antagonistic by nature, and hollows all collectively have dealt with SOME SHIT. I’m very willing to explore that.

I like writing longer more complex threads with deep plots and emotional depth. If you want some examples, check out my grimmichi pieces on AO3 (this is a grimm and ichi thread that we edited into a fic).

What are your weak aspects as rp partner?: Sometimes I forget to write starters (especially if we discuss and idea and then don’t specify who should do the starter piece). I have some weeks were i have a lot of time to rp and some where I don’t. I can get overwhelmed easily if there’s too much happening at once.

I love shipping, but I am very picky which who I ship with.

I am also not great with fighting scenes. I (like my muse) hate being the weaker character in the situation and it can really get my hackles up. I need this to be somewhat plotted in advance.

Do you rp smut?:  YES / NO / UNKNOWN. Do you prefer to go into detail?:  YES / NO / DEPENDS. Are you okay with black curtain?:  YES / NO. - When do you rp smut? More out of fun or character development?: Usually more for character or plot development. Sometimes for fun! (Sometimes just because I want to torture/tease my muse).

- Anything you would not want to rp there?: Anything particularly taboo. I’d probs take non-con (unless it was consensual non-con) to a different platform. serious degradation or humiliation. Anything detailing specifically and intentionally unsafe sexual practices.

Are ships important to you?:  YES / NO. I don’t need to ship, but I have fun with it!

- What do you love to explore the most in your ships?: I love plot lines focused on personal growth.  A ship should allow both muses to grow and develop individually and as a pair. I also love the “enemies to lovers” trope. I want to explore new depths and create vulnerability. Sometimes I like exploring really horrible unhealthy, abusive, and co-dependent relationships. Sometimes I like exploring fluff and safety and mutual love and respect! I’m a mixed bag.

- What could possibly make your Muse interesting towards others, why should they rp with this particular character of yours now, what possible plots do they offer?:

Grimmjow is the second artificial arrancar created (meaning he has been in Las Noches throughout the entirety of Aizen building his army), involved himself in two wars, and has brushed up against quite a large number of factions - from the other Espada, to the Vizard, Humans, Shoten, and quite a few shinigami.

His angst potential is off the charts considering all his fraccion/family are dead, his boss is in prison, and he’s going to die alone and unloved in a desert with no friends, no home, and in total obscurity! For a guy who fashions himself something like a king, he has an awful lot of self esteem, and personal significance issues.

Engaging and fascinating arcs exploring Grimmjow’s non-human emotions, behaviours, and tendencies: including the conditioning of being a hollow and learning to fear and hate the titular 'good guy' shinigami because being 'cleansed' will destroy everything you are. This leading to coloured perceptions of shinigami characters and humans in general for both being lesser 'food' and having something he doesn't: a 'heart'. This can lead to wildly complex interactions and trust issues with other muses. If this is the kind of content you like, come rp with him!

If you want more fluff content, Grimmjow is actually a very cute person when you get your C4 out and blow through all of his defensive walls. Grimmjow wants to be important to other people, and once he has decided that your muse is worth the effort, he will go through great lengths to prove his worth to them. If your looking to build long lasting relationships in a variety of flavours (from familial to romantic) in which you get to slowly but surly earn the trust and loyalty of a guy who literally purrs, then you should also rp with him!

- With what type of Muses do you usually struggle to rp with?: Quiet types or doormats. He gets bored. He thrives off of dysfunction and chaos.

- With what type of Muses do they usually work well with?: Powerful characters. People he wants to overcome or there’s friction or conflict with. People he relates to. There’s not many, but he’s generally at a point (post canon) where he is trying to reach out and form connections with people.

- What interests your Muse(s) in general: He finds the human world fascinating. He finds power fascinating. If someone triggers any of his shriveled empathy, he’s invested automatically.

- What do they desire, what is their goal?: Grimmjow craves companionship and security and respect. Everything else is secondary. He believes he can have these things if he is powerful.

- What catches their interest first when meeting someone new?: Passion/power and confidence are both key. He is interested in people who function with purpose.

- What do they value in a person?:  Integrity. Strength. Loyalty. Compassion. Confidence.

- What themes do they like talking about?: He’s a curious guy, so he likes to learn what motivates other people. He has a lot of questions about everything. Las Noches. Tentatively, I say Aizen.

- Which themes bore them?: Hypocrisy in any form. Good and evil ethics. Talking about himself. History. Any situation where he is made to feel like an idiot.

- Did they ever go through something traumatic?:  Yes.

- What could possibly trigger them?: Oh. God. So much stuff.

- What could set them off, enrage them?: Condescending to him or perceiving oneself as superior. Hostility.

- Is there someone /-thing they hate?: Yes, but they are dead.

- Is there someone /-thing they love?: No. “Hollows don’t love.”

Is your Muse easy to approach?: YES / NO? - Best ways to approach them?: Like approaching a wild animal who’ll either bite or run. It’s very easy to actually approach him, but its difficult to get anything of value out of him and he’s prone to both violence and retreating if the conversation gets too pointed or confusing for him. - Where are they usually to be found?: Stalking Las Noches, Karakura (Near both the shoten and the Kurosaki clinic), various parks with large trees that he can sit in. I do have him crop up in the SS from time to time tooo if thats the only option for interaction.

Something you may still want to point out about your muse?: Grimmjow is an excellent actor. In 80% of his canon interactions with other characters, he is acting. His hot-head personality type is a direct product of this, as he is actually rather emotionally flat.  Being perceptive is key when dealing with him.
